Around SBN: Nevin Shapiro Vows To Bring Down Miami

Shane Battier

This is my first post in the Blazer's Edge and English is not my first language, so please bear with me......Anyway, I have seen you guys talking about we should get a legit 1 and a backup 4 over the summer via trade or draft. I truly believe they are necessary, but I am just wondering if we can slide B.Roy as 1 and put Rudy as 2. Basically, we have a legit 1 and B.Roy always handle the ball @ 4th quarter. B-Roy can basically post up any point guard while having a 3-pt threat from Rudy in the beginning. Of course, that means we have to get rid of Sergio (who I dont really like anyway as he told Bayless minute away), but we can trade him to BOS for L.Powe or DET for J. Maxiell or Min for C.Smith.

Actually, I just want to see if there is any chance that Portland can trade or sign Shane Battier for our starting 3. It is weird that he is the best current defender in the NBA (I think). If you see how he defend Kobe in the playoff, that is basically the textbook defence plus more. When Yao goes down, he is the one who fire up the whole team. For me, There is nothing but respect to him. Since I dont know anything about his contract, so I dont know if he is going to be in free agent or trade market. However, I really think he can help the whole team in general. He has the veterian leadership, knows defence (duh!), can shoot 3 in the corner, be mentor to Batum, can assist. I think he is the best SF in the NBA (defence-wise), but it probably is difficult to get him. I think that he is better than Ron Artest, let's hope Shane has respect to B.Roy like Ron did.

My proposal lineup:

PG- B.Roy/S.Blake/Bayless

SG-Rudy/Webster/

SF-Battier/Batum

PF-L.A./Powe or Hayes or C.Smith

C-Oden/ Joel

Out: Sergio, Fyre, Outlaw,

If there was a chance, I'm sure the Blazers would jump on it.

But I think Daryl Morey, Rockets GM, is going to keep Battier around. He’s very good for Houston. Unless we’re willing to give up someone like Aldridge, I doubt the phone call would last very long.

I’d love to see Battier on our team, as would just about any other team in the league. He is indeed a very good basketball player.

All True

but….would you trade LMA for Scola and Battier? This is not anything but a value question (not a legit trade post). What do you all think?

No

Separate and apart from not wanting to “unconsolidate” talent, age alone is enough to keep me from making that deal. Aldridge is 23. Scola is 29. Battier is 30.

Aldridge will be starting in the All-Star game after those two are retired.

Sadly...

Battier won’t be a free agent this year or the next and I really don’t see Adelman letting him go without Aldridge sized compensation. Before Adelman took over in Houston we might have had a chance to steal him, but not now. He’s their on and off court leadership, defensive coordinator and lock down defender and thanks to the teams marketing him as the “no-stats allstar”, the fans know it.

“The Rockets currently oblige him in that regard by making him the team’s only player with access to a huge amount of highly sophisticated statistical data that they compile on all opposing players.” – Wikipedia entry on Battier

There’s more reasons than just performance to keep Battier out of a trade.

Battier is locked down and defended by Houston...

It would cost more to get him than he’s worth — let alone the fact that there is a logjam at the 3, which you have solved by moving not 1 but 2 players out of their natural positions (Marty is a 3, not a 2; Brandon is a 2, not a 1).

Heck, if you want to get an actual defensive specialist 3, the Free Agent on the market this year isn’t Battier, it’s Trevor Ariza.

Of course, it’d cost money to get him. And the Blazers still don’t have room for him. But at least he’s actually on the market, unlike Battier.

The Blazers already have their perimeter defender in the person of Nic Batum. Have patience!

I agree and think Nic Batum will be a better all around player than Battier. Once he gets a reliable jump shot watch out.

Welcome to bedge

I would love to have Battier. However, despite handling the ball a lot in the 4th, Roy is not actually a very good point guard. You can see the statistical breakdown here:

http://www.82games.com/0809/08POR5.HTM

I think if the Blazers are looking to get Fernandez more minutes, then they need to slide Roy over to the 3. Well, on the depth chart it would read ‘SF’, but in the Blazers offense, Rudy would probably play 3 as it suits his skills more; camping at the corner 3 point line with a green light to drive to the basket if the defender over commits.

But Rudy is way too small to guard small forwards. In fact, Roy is too small to guard big ones like LeBron and Carmelo Anthony.

I'm fan of Battier's too

Nothing but respect for him after the play-offs this year. Rock solid veteran. He would be this generations Buck Williams. Getting him would require naked pictures and dead horse heads.

Love Battier, too, but wouldn't give up what Houston wants....

I think that your lineups would be great...

it is going to be very hard to pry Battier from the Rockets, expecially now that they have lost Artest. I have my fingers crossed for this to happen but I am not going to hold my breath! :-)

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.

OK, that should just about wrap up the goaltending discussion.
