Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

Greg Oden and Jerryd Bayless are working out with Bobby Medina in Columbus. Yes, my "players rooming together" prayers have been heard. Though probably at the moment it's only strength training, those two working together could be hugely important for both of them.

Update: According to the latest Wheels At Work it was a brief time, and Jerryd is now working in Arizona with Medina and Kanales. See FanShot by Cablinasian. Still good to see that they invest time in both players.

It's smarty pants both ways

Get Jerryd chemistry with the big man (and whoever gets chemistry with him out of our PGs, will be The One), and Bayless is prolly an intense lil’ motivator to get the big man moving.

It is smart for Jerryd, smart of KP and Friends to group them together, and smart of Oden to say “Yes sir”.

It’s a total perfect fit.

But while Bayless and Oden are in the gym, Conley is busy trimming his pervy pencil thin mustache.

Oden will see he needs new, gooder, less creepily covered in wiggety whack facial hair friends.

It was totally 60’s/70’s. He can pull the patchiness off.

The finely groomed pencil thin pedo-stache is not my cup of tea… the John Waters mustache. I like it on John Waters, but not on my starting PGs.

That would be freaking awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If the T-rex head butts an alley-oop to Oden, it will be the single greatest play since vince carter jumped over a center to dunk.

That said, Bayless is the future point. He should get to know Oden very well. Bayless to Oden P&R as a part of our offense will make things much easier on brandon and LA because we can get the defense so out of position in only a few seconds.

Sorry, linked the wrong day

Was today in hour one, “gameball” segment to Jerryd Bayless for following Oden to Ohio.

In hour 3 they also had an interesting talk with scout Chad Buchanan attending a group workout in Minneapolis organized by the T-Wolves, where he could look at some players that wouldn’t work out individually for Portland (agent thinks Blazers pick too low, bad fit, whatever). He also said he, Mike Born and KP will attend the Reebok Eurocamp next weekend.

by Norsktroll on Jun 1, 2009 6:53 PM PDT up reply actions

And as Sean Meagher and Ben linked today, Oden talked on his own blog about his first squad training in the last years and his intention to stay at one place in Columbus longer this summer instead of moving around so much (last year Ohio, Portland, Hawaii, LA, …).

by Norsktroll on Jun 1, 2009 6:57 PM PDT up reply actions

I hope he considers Hawaii

Pete Newells bigman camp is the first part of aug. in Hawaii. It would not hurt Oden to get all the tutoring he can on his footwork.

I try to help with everything," Fernandez said. "If the coach says go rebound, I go rebound. I work for the team.

""If I'm playing this game to get media and attention, I shouldn't be here," Aldridge said. "I'm here to play basketball, and do what I can do to help this team win."

His stare became blank. It was apparent he was back in that place, on the Rose Garden's logo, picking up Aaron Brooks as the crowd nervously roared.

Yes, I immediately thought of Bayless' work ethic rubbing off on Oden

Even more so than thinking about potential chemistry they might develop (which others have already discussed above), my first thought was that Bayless’ tremendous work ethic can only help Oden to work harder this summer.

This is some of the best news I’ve heard in weeks.

from what I have seen, it looks like Conley and Oden are both low-key, chill, laid back guys, which is probably why they are friends as they have a lot in common in that respect. But as we have all probably experienced, sometimes working with your best friend is not the greatest thing, especially if you are both laid back.

Sometimes you need an coworker who fills in where you lack and pairing Odens laid back-i-ness(??) with Bayless’ aggressiveness will complement each other PERFECTLY.

If you are working out with someone who takes it very seriously, it’s kinda hard not to try to match it unless you’re a man with no ego or cajones. Oden is a Real Man, so he’ll respond to it.

One thing that stood out to me from Oden’s blog, was him saying he hadn’t done squats in over two years. That shows how limited he was in his lower body workouts because of the knee rehab, if he couldn’t do a basic and regular strength exercise like squats. Being free to do stuff like that should work wonders on his mobility and lift.

Like I always say, even if he doesn’t regain anymo’ athleticism, just simply being in shape will make it appear he is a lot more athletic.

Morty

by Mortimer on Jun 1, 2009 7:39 PM PDT up reply actions

proud hinrichsheeple

by Cablinasian on Jun 1, 2009 7:59 PM PDT up reply actions

And he could STILL jump really high on some plays

Just not consistently at all…

…ya know, this lil’ tidbit makes it all the more encouraging that Oden will regain much of his athleticism. Being off his legs for most of a year and then not being able to effectively strength train it… man.

It’s nice he was able to do what he could do when he could do it!

BEING IN SHAPE IS THE KEY. If he is in shape, all other problems go away. And then he stays on the court, and an Oden on the court is an Oden helping us win games.

Morty

by Mortimer on Jun 1, 2009 8:06 PM PDT up reply actions

Amare reportedly started much earlier with training for his legs again to regain his explosiveness

I always thought the Blazers were extra cautious there, and Oden a bit frustrated put all his effort into building his torso and especially his arms and in the process got a little too heavy. If they could build 10 pounds of muscle on his legs and strengthen the knees and ankles while bringing him down to 275 in total, he would be perfect to battle any center in the league.

by Norsktroll on Jun 1, 2009 8:11 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't think he wants him bigger than he is

Just that, he doesn’t need weigh what Howard weighs to be in shape, since Oden is taller and longer and has a bigger frame… so his ideal weight isn’t necessarily 250/265 or whatever.

I agree, getting Oden in shape is the biggest thing we need to deal with. His weight will settle at it’s ideal poundage once he is in shape.

He SHOULD weigh more than Howard though, because of his frame. And that’s fine.

Mortimer

by Mortimer on Jun 2, 2009 4:17 PM PDT up reply actions

Oden measured 6'11.5

and Howard is listed as 6’11 (probably in shoes) so maybe there’s an inch difference in height. Doesn’t seem like enough difference in height to justify Oden weighing 20 pounds more.

by MiledAnimal on Jun 3, 2009 11:46 AM PDT up reply actions

Greg is 6’11’’ w/o shoes, Dwight is 6’9’’ w/o…. That’s probably 10 pounds difference, and people carry weight in different ways. Dwight has big shoulders, but pretty skinny legs. If Greg is 20 pounds heavier due to being a few inches taller and having stronger legs, I’m fine with that.

proud hinrichsheeple

by Cablinasian on Jun 3, 2009 12:31 PM PDT up reply actions

Its not just height though

Oden has a pretty substantially bigger frame and body, naturally. It can hold more weight.

Coming into the NBA, Howard was 6’9" without shoes. Oden was 6’11". Two inches isn’t much, but combine that with the bigger frame and overall size, and twenty pounds spreads out pretty easily.

I also wouldn’t think whatever weight Howard is listed at is accurate. It could be a lot higher or lower. I’m less worried about what Oden weighs specifically, just that he is in shape and settles into the right weight for him. I think we all agree he wasn’t at the right weight this past season.

I think that being able to work on his lower body and get out and run will be pretty much all he needs to do to get in shape finally.

Roy outweighs many other SGs the same height as him by 20lbs or so, because of his big frame. Bayless, the same. I mean, I know Rudy is a beanpole, but Roy outweighs him by THIRTY-FIVE pounds. He’s only an inch taller.

I get my numbers here, in case it doesn’t jibe with what you’re looking at—

But he’s certainly bigger than Hakeem.

I’m not sure where I said they were differently sized though…?

I’m also not saying Oden’s weight is fine— it isn’t. He needs to get lighter. But his ideal weight probably isn’t the same as other centers, because he has a bigger frame and is taller. Everyone is different.

Being in shape means everything. Having better conditioning will bring his weight down to a more natural, maintainable level.

They can develop some chemistry on the court and push each other in the weight room. Plus, Bayless will be feeding the big man all day, something the wings/guards failed to do consistently last year. I hope this gives Greg another outlet on the roster, between the injuries and the expectations, it seemed like his naturally introverted nature was even more pronounced early in the year. Personally I would like to see Conley-Bayless 1on1

With an explosion of PG greatness.

He’d never eve bother putting the ball on the ground.

Conley isn't nearly as explosive as Bayless.

Bayless isn’t meant for the occasional iso. Look at him in summer league. If he wanted to go 1v1 and score, he can.

Conley has a legit 5 inch advantage arms wise

And he is quicker then Bayless too.

Offseason:
(T)Mike Conley Jr
(T)Reggie Evans
(D)Taj Gibson
(D)Kevin Seraphin
(D)Jerel McNeal/Lester Hudson

2.25 inches on each side

Yeah, it ADDS UP to 4.5 inches, but saying it’s a 5 inch advantage makes one think his arms are 5 inches longer each way.

He has half a finger of extra length on Bayless. Yeah, it matters, but Bayless has the size/quickness/strength advantage. If Bayless needs to reach for something on a high shelf, he just has to stand on his tiptoes to compensate.

ACTUALLY, Bayless has over about 3 inches of standing reach on Mike Conley, so it will be Mike Conley who has to ask BAYLESS to reach stuff high on a shelf for him! Hmm, this changes things!

Conley’s arms are barely longer than Bayless, and he can’t reach as high, but they look longer because he is skinny, which is one thing I do worry about Conley come playoff time (or, one on one vs Bayless time)… he is so tiny. His frame itself is small; his height isn’t ideal but it’s okay. Same for his wingspan. He’s just a tiny dude, though.

So, because of where their arms are on their bodies and whatnot, Bayless actually has a better standing reach, but Conley has a better wingspan.

Conley also has more NBA experience. But I can’t wait to see what these two are doing in 5 years & what teams they are on.

Quick, I want you to think of the 1 or 2 guys on the blazers you would want Greg working out with this summer...

…then tell me Bayless isn’t in that top two?

This is AWESOME news!!!! Plus when you add in that Bayless now gets workout this summer against Conley…..oh man how great is that for Jerryd? I’m betting money right now that Greg and Jerryd come in next year looking awesome, anyone want to take that bet?

What will really happy

Bayless will learn from Greg’s work ethic
Bayless will push Greg too hard and cause Greg to get injured
Greg and Bayless won’t get along and kill team chemistry

I figured I had to throw out some negatives since we’re all being unrealistic here and assuming that they will just magically bring out the best in one another.

by Zaig on Jun 3, 2009 10:35 AM PDT reply actions

What???? You don't believe that they will merge into one unstoppable basketball gladiator/player?

Honestly there is nothing bad that can some out of this. Having a workout partner is huge as even the most motivated person performs better when someone is pushing them.

by ppilot on Jun 3, 2009 1:51 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah

I had two friends who decided to start lifting together. One started lagging behind the other so he opted for roids, which messed him up. Obviously this is an extreme example, but “working out together” or “having a mentor” doesn’t instantly mean you will rise to the next level of awesomeness. This isn’t a movie where 2 people can always push each other to the top.

Do I think this is a good thing? Yes. But people are blowing it way out of control.

by Zaig on Jun 3, 2009 2:16 PM PDT up reply actions

I think a lot of people are having fun with the Bayless = Fire and Oden = Ice differences

Chemistry is a huge aspect of this team and GO and B-Rex spending a lot of time together will only increase their effectiveness when that tandem is on the court. Nobody is expecting miracles.

Hopefully Bayless doesn't underwhelm next year...just kidding.

This is awesome news. I think this, with the addition of Greg finally being able to properly strength train his lower body will make them a force next year. And Nic playing all summer for France getting better, this team is so freaking exciting to watch grow up!

Reading between the lines

I doubt the team would have arranged this if they were planning to trade Bayless. To me this is just one more indication that the team is high on Bayless. Color me happy.

Bayless

What do they think of his role on this team? It depends what moves they make on the PG situation.

Offseason:
PG Options: Mike Conley(T)/Jason Kidd(FA)/Tyreke Evans(D) - Pick one
SG Options: Terrence Williams(D) - If we lose Rudy
Forward Options: Reggie Evans(T) - Taj Gibson(D), Damion James(D), Kevin Seraphin(D)

by TheGreatDane17 on Jun 5, 2009 11:32 PM PDT up reply actions

Not sure I understand your point

My point was that arranging for Bayless to work out with GO is an indication that they are not planning to trade him away. If they are not planning to trade him away then I would say they have some level of confidence in his future development. After the Houston series, KP singled out Bayless and Webster as the two guys he expected to make a big leap this summer.

I suspect that Bayless is penciled in as the back-up. He clearly is not ready to leap from the bench to starting in the NBA. Where he goes from back-up depends on his performance and improvement.

They may still harbor hopes of bringing in a better starter, someone who is a short term answer like Miller, or someone who is a medium term guy like Hinrich. Maybe they are hoping to see Bayless up against Conley, that would be interesting.

All I’m saying is that these are little bits of information that suggest that Bayless is in their plans.

by upper left corner on Jun 6, 2009 7:09 AM PDT up reply actions

I don't think Bayless will be traded

For anything less then the likes of Tony Parker & I assume he will be a part of the future. What I meant by role is…

How quick do they think he will be a quality NBA starting PG? If we are talking 3+ years, I think Hinrich would be a nice move as our starter till Bayless is ready, who can defend PG’s much better then Blake & Bayless can be a scoring option off the bench. Less then 3 years, I would say make a move for Jason Kidd as a mentor. He could really learn a lot from him & Kidd is still the best rebounding PG in the NBA, one of the best at passing too. Better defender then Blake at this point(a bit sad but true). Is McMillan uncompatable with someone he literally can’t see “eye to eye” with? If thats the case then we should go after a 6’5" PG like Tyreke Evans in the draft, who compares favorably to Rodney Stuckey(Who I bet Nate would love to have). If he can get over his affinity of small PG’s(He obviously saw what CP3 did in the Olympics) & thinks Bayless would be better as a part of a duo, I say go after Mike Conley Jr. Conley/Bayless would be one of the most potent PG tandems since Isiah Thomas/Vinnie “Microwave” Johnson & actually compare quite well to those two.

Offseason:
PG Options: Mike Conley(T)/Tyreke Evans(D)
SG Options: Terrence Williams(D)
Forward Options: Reggie Evans(T) - Taj Gibson(D), Damion James(D), Kevin Seraphin(D)

If thats the case then we should go after a 6’5" PG like Tyreke Evans in the draft
The problem is that he’s an incredibly ball-dominant point guard, often looking like a fish out of water when he’s forced to give up the rock for more than a few seconds. Memphis’ offense often looks quite stagnant, with Evans over-dribbling the ball at the top of the key as his four teammates stand around and twiddle their thumbs. He can be pretty sloppy with the ball at times, displaying questionable decision-making skills and incredibly poor shot-selection, which wouldn’t be as much of an issue if he was able to make shots at a respectable rate from the perimeter.

With his poor shooting mechanics (he fades away unnecessarily on every attempt) Evans is very streaky with his feet set in catch and shoot situations, and downright dreadful shooting the ball off the dribble. He only converts a dismal 25% of his jump-shots according to Synergy Sports Technology, but the problem is that he settles for them on a regular basis—they make up about 40% of his possessions, often with a hand in his face and early in the shot clock no less. While his skill-set may develop in time, Evans’ mentality looks extremely questionable—it’s hard not to come away with the impression that he’s a pretty selfish player. He’s likely going to have to revamp his shooting stroke entirely if he’s to ever become even a decent threat from the NBA 3-point line, something he’s been unwilling to do up until this point.
