Around SBN: NFL Players Ready To Welcome Gay Teammate

I don't care if they do it in Europe, MLS, or WNBA. I'll never buy a Blazers jersey with this kind of crap on it.

Can't wait for them to paste some company's logo on the court, too...

First WNBA team gets a jersey sponsor – NBA next?

An identity theft protection company now sponsors the front of the jerseys of the Phoenix Mercury for a nice $1 million. And signage on the court. David Stern apparently approved the move.

It has long been very common in European leagues, first in soccer and then in about all other pro leagues. It is a major source of revenue for the teams, usually the most important one after league TV contracts. In some basketball leagues even the team name gets branded by the main jersey sponsor (e.g. Rudy’s DKV Joventut → DKV is an insurance company).

I would assume that is a point that will be discussed for the next CBA between the NBA team owners and players, and in the current economic situation it’s more likely they introduce it than not. Buy your own Portland XBox Blazers jersey in 2011-12.

Story with photo how it will look on Bright Side of the Sun. Here is Kevin Pelton’s take on it.

Though with soccer

There isn’t the breaks in the game to run TV commercials, and the WNBA loses money. So, I understand why they do it, but the NBA with all of it’s commercial breaks would be stupid to do it. If anything, pay the players less. Where are they going to go, Europe?

I shouldn't say that

It would be annoying to see the Blazers with sponsors on their jerseys, but I’d get over it pretty quickly since I’m under no illusions that the NBA is anything but a business.

I agree

wouldn’t bother me that much, as long as it was a decent sponsor, not someone like Coors (yummy), Joe’s Bar, or something like that.

aren't they already advertising adidas on all jerseys?

"There are a few teams you have to watch out for in the fourth quarter."
"Yeah, but Portland definitely is not one of them."

-New Orleans Hornets broadcasters at the end of the third quarter with the Hornets leading 74-59. Portland later ends up winning 97-89.

"They don't mind him shooting that shot at all. Rudy Fernandez is not that great of a 3pt shooter."

-New Orleans Hornets broadcasters right after a Rudy Fernandez missed 3pter. Rudy Fernandez finished the game with three 3pters on six attempts.

My 2 cents

Wouldn’t worry me if it happened.

Already a common practice here in Australia that most sporting teams have sponorship on the front of their uniforms.

Only thing that can really annoying is if they change the sponser alot, then you don’t have the current jersey.

Another form of revenue for teams so will be interesting to see if this gets up in the NBA.

It's all about makin that cash

We are lucky Paul Allen is so rich or we would be playing at the Nike Rose Garden. Im ok with advertising more money in Paul Allen’s pocket the better chance of buying a great player

ALLLL Rudy Then!!!!!

European take on this:

Here in Spain we’re totally used to it, even most amateur teams do it, they name their teams after the (usually local) business who pays for their jerseys and buys the team a dinner after the season.

Among pro sports its a little different, and small teams usually do it. There is no salary cap in sports here, so smaller teams need to make as much money as they can to try to compete against big powerhouses, and big powerhouses can make enough money to pay 2-3 superstars salaries.

My favorite one is Barça’s soccer one:

Instead of getting money out of it, they donate the 0,7% of their income (1.5 Million €) to UNICEF

Nobody expects a Spanish Acquisition!

that's a pretty cool idea

the donation….

Funny thought about shirt sponsors

It was abundantly obvious to me who was going to win UEFA Champions League this year by seeing what sponsor was on their shirt…

Barca – Unicef
Man U – AIG

Total no brainer!

At least European teams don't have brands in their stadiums' name

like Campe Nou or Twickenham, although a few stadiums have brands in their names like Emirates stadium or Alianz arena. But it hurts to hear Staples center all the time, or AT&T center, or Pepsi center. Almost as much as seeing brand names on jerzeys, but I find it more disturbing.

Quicken Loans Areana

is by FAR the worst. Like a parody of product placement. Glad I don’t have to hear that one anymore

You won't have to.

The money they didn’t get from you buying the jersey, they already made from the sponsor. This type of thing is probably closer to reality than people think. What’s easier, bail-out for the Hornets or simply a corp. sponsor patch?
