May 6, 2009 Junk D. (snicker) Im Sorry Edition
I have finally come to terms with this season. After wandering this:
for days and days, looking for any sign of light to break up my misery over our untimely exit from the first round. In the process I cut off several close inter-friends :).... so here goes..Im sorry for alienating you <3. I wont do it again.
I would like to ASK for an apology from Greg and Steve and Sergio and Travis and Nate... and KP for not moving RLEC....
I would like to apologize in advance for all the fights i will pick about politics during the off season :(
<3 everyone

Does anyone know what Oden is up to this summer?

Is it okay if we talk about our own summer school experiences? A la Band Camp?
And prove once and for all, it is a good thing for Oden.

I took some classes at Oregon State one summer
It was awesome. Summer school is really flexible in that some classes start in July, and some start in August. So I took 4 classes over the course of the summer, but never had more than 2 classes going on at a time. Thus I had plenty of time to hang out with my buddies at night and to goof around during the day when I wasn’t in class. And the best part was that I was done with school by the end of August so I still had a month break before Oregon State started back up again at the end of September.
I am a huge fan of summer school.

My wife (chick I was shacked up with at the time) went to U of O for summer school
She had a bunch of classes with football players and she invited them over to teach them how to make sushi. They came over a few times for dinner, we went to their place once and one fellow from Compton and his girlfriend went camping with us.

TIH: You stand accused of Aggravated Gullibility. How do you plead?
ULC: I, um, I plead Guilty But Ignorant, Your Honor.
TIH: Ignorant? That is obvious, but why is it relevant?
ULC: I was busy posting brilliant observations in the LMA front page thread. I hadn’t even looked at the sidebar…….
TIH: I doubt the brilliance of your observations but fine. I pronounce you Guilty AND Ignorant…..
ULC: But, but, but…..
TIH: Now for my favorite part: your sentence. I sentence you to public humiliation and 24 hrs of You Tube tapes of Bayless making TOs, missing shots, and strutting like a peacock.

I'll admit to it. I made a tomindrag screename to post a response to someone
Who made a snide remark about you by calling you tomindrag. It was a one and done name steal.
by staylost on May 6, 2009 1:14 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
tom, I admit it was intentional
but when I made this name, you had switched to Dragline. Thus, I didn’t foresee the confusion.
Here’s a deal for you: I will stop using this if you give me the password to Dragline. I thought TiH was gone forever when I made this. Then TiH came back (which is great, everybody loves it and you for that matter). But right now I’m stuck with TiR.
I don’t want to continue to piss you off and confuse the heck out of people (like, it took annthefan 2 months to figure out I’m not you… and that’s why she hates me to this day).
This may not be the solution, but I truly want to work in earnest on finding one. Once possibility would be for me to take over Dragline (and accompany it with a JD that explains who is who now). What other ideas do you have?
I seriously think the world of you Tom and want to be your friend and friends with all Bedgers. I’m completely open to negotiations. Let’s work together and see if we can sort this out. This is a good time to do this, since it’s the off-season and all.

Not trying to be mean, but you could just make your own name you thought up by yourself.
If you really are worried about tominoahu’s feelings. It wouldn’t be that hard. Plus, annthefan COULDN’T be pissed off at you anymore because you’d be someone else. You had a run with tominrehab. Your best move now appears to be stepping out of that role. It could be a move with the new offseason. A bigger better (and in the case of Oden, smarter) Blazer team, and a bigger and better tominrehab great the upcoming season of Blazer domination.

Sorry I made a joke about suicide. I can find humor in just about anything, and realize that some things I find humorous, other find offensive. I shouldn’t have made that joke, just like I shouldn’t joke about cancer (and don’t) on Blazers Edge.
The last thing I want to do is offend people on Blazers Edge. I apologize for that. This is not the proper forum. I do not know if I can really say anything beyond that without sounding snarky.

Neither
I’ve called out folks when they use “retard.” If someone is offensive, they deserve to be called on it. It just needs to be done in an educating manner and not a condescending or jerkly manner. I should have known better, and sometimes folks do not know better. Either way, as long as it is explained why it is offensive, instead of just being offended, more power to them.

Think about a person who knowingly tries to take on anothers identity
and for months gets away with it. Isn’t that called identity theft? This has been going on for close to 6 months now and Rehab still has people mistaking him for Tom and he still never disabuses the person he’s duped of their mistake. Anyone see a pattern? How would people feel if their online persona were co-opted by someone who makes the kind of comments that Rehab makes? That kind of behavior is less than balanced. And now he wants Tom to give him the password for Dragline, bribing Tom with the prospect of no more confusion between tominhawaii/tominrehab? What? I asked Rehab, as free of profanity as I possibly could, to make a pact to never respond directly or indirectly to each others comments, and that I was giving him the last word. The next day, he’s commenting in one of the threads that our “relationship” is on the mend and reciting little psuedosychobabble pep talks on how hate is damaging. Rehab has a lot more problems going on than just identity theft. Now that I recognize it I would spot the ugly mind behind his comments no matter what Rehab calls himself.

"Kentucky Fried Movie." A comedy classic.
Airplane was the movie that made Jim Abrahams and Jerry and David Zucker famous. KFM was the movie they did before Airplane. It’s a series of vignettes that spoof TV, movies, and popular culture in the 1970s. The longest vignette was a 45-minute send-up of Bruce Lee’s martial-arts classic, Enter the Dragon. That’s where the Take him to Detroit! reference comes from.
I saw KFM four times before I finally saw Enter the Dragon. The other patrons must have thought I was on drugs, because every other scene I was cracking-up remembering how it was lampooned in KFM.

I love how some people (not you rehab, the folks writing the linked article) ...
… want to make personal choices into a societal problem. Oh my, obesity is a problem for all of us because tax payer dollars get used to treat some of the people with obesity related health problems.
In a free society, people are allowed to make personal choices, even if they are poor ones. If people want to eat poorly, get fat and die at an early age, that is their right. Perhaps the problem is the people who want the rest of us footing the bill to take of people who won’t take care of themselves. Rather than moving toward a nanny state that tells you what you can eat, when you can drive your car or light a fire in your fireplace, how about we just say no to people who come to the hospital with high blood pressure and diabetes. If they drop dead in the parking lot, that’s their problem.
Some might find this cold hearted. But last year my doctor informed me I had developed Type II diabetes. I could have done what most people apparently do – nothing. Instead I did what was recommended. Cut calories, limited carbs and started working out. (I was already eating pretty healthy, but am a bread, pasta, potato and rice lover.) And guess what, blood sugar numbers are good, I’ve dropped 20 lbs and as a bonus both my cholestorol and BP is in the excellent range. According to my doc, I’m only the 2nd patient she’s ever seen do this. This is not to pat myself on the back – but to point out that it usually comes down to a matter of choice. And I don’t believe in government being the one to be making choices for us.
Sorry for the mini rant and now back to our regular programing.

How about this arguement:
The government is the people of the nation. The people of the nation subsidize healthcare through taxation. The government pays for part of citizen’s healthcare. The people of the nation, having decided to subsidize healhcare, must move to prevent abuse or costs will become unreasonable. They cannot deny healthcare subsidies to certain groups as it will reflect poorly on then. So instead they must force all to act within one ‘healthy’ mode.

Using that logic, there is nothing that can’t be decided by the government. The key word in your paragraph is in the last sentence – force. Since when in a free society does the gobvernment have the right to force people to do something against their will when it does not threaten or harm another? My eating a cheeseburger threatens no one other than perhaps my self.

Are you referring to physical harm or a greater harm.
Because clearly, if the people of the nation pay some percent of everyone’s healthcare, than their is monetary harm when any poor health related choice is made by an individual.
If a smoker and a thief both harm you by taking money from your pocket, is there a difference other than the disassociation in our minds?
This is coming from the point of view of the social contract.

Should I continue with what I am saying?
For the record I feel the same way you do, but I see the only way of it being fitting into our society is to allow government to do no more than regulate in anything healthcare related.

Not pissing me off at all.
I’m not against regulation. But how about regulations that grant health care providers to make judgement calls, rather than regulate what people can eat?
Actually, I know the answer to that one. Litigation. Someone will sue.

Interesting take on this.......
but it assumes absolutely no role of genetics. As in one of the leading causes of high cholesterol is genetics.
So do we with hold treatment of everyone who makes bad choices? And just who gets to make that decision? Would treatment for STDs stop? Because getting one means that you may have made a bad decision. Where is the line drawn?
I’m all for personal responsibility. there is far too little of it today. But it is difficult, if not impossible, to define rules that fit all situations.
by antediluvian on May 6, 2009 1:27 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
you've described the real problem.
There isn’t an easy way to draw lines that are perfect. That’s why I identified my little comment as a rant.
Personally, this is one problem I have with universal health care. It doesn’t require any personal responsibility. If I had to come up with a suggestion, I would do something in the vein of Oregon’s health plan, where a list of health care treatments and checkups are covered, with others not. The list should be heavily weighted to preventive medicine and regular checkups and focus on the young. I am all for free health care to people up to the age of, say 18.
hakkaa päälle !
by timg56 on May 6, 2009 1:44 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
That is so awesome.
I have come to the conclusion that free health care should be up to the age of 18 as well, and nothing past that age (preventative complicates things obviously: is water quality a part of preventative healthcare?). I came to that view through reasoning out a healthcare system to reinforce personal health responsibilty. Since 18 and unders are recognized by our society as unable to make their own decisions, they are clearly not responsible for their health choices (which would have largely been made by their parents up to this point).
Another complication is high risk activities like, for example, rock climbing. If the government were to set up a fair healthcare system would such activities be synonomous with the Atkins diet?
by staylost on May 6, 2009 1:56 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Or we could pay for all the health care anyone needs with no problem
by legalizing all drugs. I mean all drugs. Even cancer and aids and std drugs. Tax em. Save on prison cost.
And cut the military in half. Replace it with a moon base, from which we throw giant boulders on our enemies. If we have to. Which I would prefer we didn’t.
That might work.
by twggyy on May 6, 2009 3:15 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I guess that's what I like about universal health care....
in that, at least as I envision it, it does require personal responsibility. There won’t be enough money for the hugely expensive, marginally effective treatments which seem almost mandatory today. For example, why does every hospital and many clinics have MRI facilities? Having that many isn’t necessary.
To me, a universal plan that fully funds preventive medicine and the most medically effective treatments would encourage individual responsibility.
But hey….the most important health care decisions involve the health of Webster’s foot and Oden’s entire body. ;-)

All I'm saying is
If I or my girlfriend are lucky enough to be offered a job, that is the highest position in our career, in one of the best markets in the world it would be an ending point if they refused to come.
To be offered such a great chance, only to have your loved one refuse to come is rediculous. For a smaller scale job it may be understandable, but this is a general manager, not a mechanic. If you refuse to move when your partner gets the chance to do something truly amazing, I’m suspicious.

I don’t think Hinrich is that much of an upgrade at point… If we’re going to make a “Championship” move, odds are it’s for a younger up and coming guard like Sessions. I don’t think a PG puts us over the hump for a couple of years as our core matures, and by that time most of the available quality guards are on the downswing of their careers.

Perhaps your brightness/contrast is set too high?
Or your viewing angle is weird? Is this an LCD?
by Timmay! on May 6, 2009 4:58 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
yeh, i like my brightness/contrast really high
so that’s probably it. It’s a hi-def LCD screen on my laptop…everything looks BRILLIANT through it.

My new netbook has a bright-as-the-sun LCD screen
And it’s really hard to see that the comments are in yellow. That’s why it was my first guess.
You’re right about it looking brilliant though. :)
by Timmay! on May 6, 2009 5:00 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
yeah, I love it.
it makes the colors look really nice. everything is so drab on most LCDs….i’d say 90% of the ones I use that aren’t mine seem extremely dim and could use a brightness/contrast adjustment.

I like Macs
I paid at least $400 more than I wanted too and my screen is too small, yet it has been the least stressful computer I have ever owned, and I’ve owned a few. I’m only utilizing about 20% of it’s capabilities because of my ignorance and I don’t mind. It’s never just sitting there running, scanning, or downloading. It just works whenever I turn it on or open it. And when I spilled iced tea on it, they replaced the keyboard and chastised me for free.

it only has 1.67 ghz and 1.5gb of ram and a 80gb hard drive, but that’s plenty for a backup computer. Has like 3-3.5 hours of battery life too, which is nice

Cavs
Does anyone else share my view that the Cavs are gonna take it all this year in convincing fashion?
LBJ is on a mission..
Denver is lookin’ good too. How ’bout a Denver/Cavs finals matchup?
Much like Jordan was the obstacle to the Blazers winning the championship in the early 90s, I’m hoping LBJ isn’t our obstacle in the years ahead.

Oh yeah I got a Andrei Kirilenko story
I done had some drinks with this dude yesterday who said he was playing poker with Kirilenko’s wife in Vegas not long after he got his big contract and days after the Jazz got knocked out of the playoffs. He said she had a huge stack of black chips and other chips he could not afford then Andrei walked up and said he wanted to go to dinner so she bet half her chips, lost them, bet the other half, lost them, then left with Andrei for dinner.

His name is Jeff Ma
He’s the stats geek that has helped the Blazers at draft time. His numbers heavily favored Durant a couple of years ago.

i still remember the good old days when Tom got Timbo banned from BlogaBull
I assumed TiH was a Bulls homer and the time and would have liked Sam Smith. How I was wrong…
But those were the good old days, in the sense that we knew who the good guys were and who the bad guys were. Back then things were black and white in a sense and there was no gray area of misunderstanding and hurt feelings.

Well, Timbo getting banned from BaB was what I was talking about
But I tend to think that Prez has a great point about what constitutes the “good ol days”. I wasn’t here when they were giving out UID. I’m guessing you weren’t there either Corvid. So it’s a little presumptuous for us to argue about what happened then. Therefore, I retract my statement about what happened then. And I also apologize for that. Hopefully you can also own up to your failings and apologize for calling my comments “a load of crap”.
That said, let’s get over this and move on in life.

basically anyone who joined before april 15, 2008 (when we upgraded to sbnation 2.0) had a unique ID number, which marks what person you were to join (i.e. the 1237th to join or w/e).
Back then we had diaries, not fanposts. I don’t even think the fanshots existed. There was a perma-linked “auto-fanshotter” that read RSS feeds from various blogs, but there wasn’t anything a poster like me or you could do other than post a “diary.”
