Asking Blazer Fans
How do we feel about Oden going to Ohio State this summer and evidently not being interested in playing in Vegas or attending a big mans camp? Is this OK with most of you or do most of you feel this is indicative of a potential problem? Without applying my opinion just wondered how many of you felt about Odens Summer Plans.

I'll reserve judgement
If he puts in a lot of time with Bobby Medina and/or Bill Bayno, it might be fine. It is a concern though. This is a crucial summer for Oden and he needs to put the work in.

It just shows that Oden doesn't love basketball
and will sign with a midwestern team when his rookie contract is done.
No big deal really…

I think the break will do him good.
also being a kid for a little while too. He’s only 21. How many of us can honestly say we’d rather have worked than goofed off all summer when we were 21? As long as he doesn’t gain a bunch of weight, I’m ok with it. But by training camp, he better be ready to work long and hard with a big man coach. Got to develop the footwork and the little jump hook.

Of course I'd rather see him working on his game, but
it’s his time off and he can do what he pleases. Getting an education is honorable and it’s going to make him a better person. I’ll gladly welcome him back when he is ready.

It's also honorable to do your utmost to earn the millions of dollars a team is paying you
This may be one of the few cases where it’s somewhat selfish to pursue and education.

Selfish how?
Because he wants to fulfill his educational commitments? Please.
I, too, want him to get better this offseason but just because he’s making big money doesn’t mean he has to put aside his education. Especially not for fans. We are taking away his lively hood by making him one dimensional. He is a human being that deserves to experience all facets of what life has to offer. Come on, be reasonable here.

No big deal
I don’t think taking a class or two conflicts with his development. I’m certain he’ll be working with Blazer staff/big man consultants for periods this summer, and I don’t care where that takes place. In fact, getting away from the scrutiny of the Portland media is a good idea.

my bad man
I think this is the big man’s most pivotal off season and needs to make sure its a productive one. He needs to break out this season and throw off that bust title the league has given him. 2010 needs to be the year of oden, for his sake

I know the NBA will focus on all things basketball but
this is out of hand. Let him go to school. When his career ends he’ll need a degree to fall back on. Let him go to school and stop scrutinizing him.

Anyone who has issues with Oden going to summer school
Obviously has never gone to summer school, heck they’re probably never been to college. I bet he could take 40 hours a week of classes and still have time to work out and he’s probably taking 3 hours a week. It’s freaking summer school.
TBFO – Typical Blazers Fan Overreaction
I don’t want him in Summer League getting injured and I have not read or heard anything about him not attending a big man camp. I think it is best to save our reactions to his off season conditioning after the off season.

Can we find out what classes he is taking...
so we can scrutinize that also? I mean, if he is taking some sort of economics class, that means he wants out of his contract.
A geography class would mean he is looking for a new team.
A psychology class means he questions whether or not he should even be playing basketball, and he hates his father.
A literature class means he spends too much time daydreaming and also that he regrets playing basketball.
Any sort of anatomy class means he fears reinjuring his knee and is scared to play.
Computer class? He’s a loner. And hates basketball.
Science class? He will abandon basketball for dentistry.
Math class…hates basketball.
Welding class…hates basketball.
Foreign language? Yep, hates basketball.

+1
Creative AND sarcastic. Well done sir, well done.
Can I get a headband? One for my peeps, one for the fans in the really cheap seats, one for my momma, one for the mayor, and if you wanna get down with the players, YOU GOTTA GET A HEADBAND!

I'm willing to give a +1 to sarcasm done well.
Thank you for giving my signature line some work.
Of all the things that can be expressed in the printed word – love, hate, fear, joy – true humor is the one that is the most difficult of all. Sarcasm, for example, is an art of delicate subtlety. Yet too many people wield it as a bulldozer – loud, smelly, ugly, and destructive – and think they are being funny.

mildly concerned, if at all
Let’s see how he looks come fall. If he worked on his game and conditioning and comes into camp improved and ready to play, I don’t care what the heck he does in the summer.
But if he doesn’t, look out…
How did you guys win that?

hmmm similar question was asked last year about Sergio
And he game back with his shot rebuilt. He may not have become are starting PG, but he definitely improved in the off-season despite being in the canaries.

What Greg needs to learn he can do anywhere.
He could even watch TV all summer and still practice raising his arms straight up instead of forward over his imaginary opponent.

It really depends
if he is going to get an education and spend time with family and friends, cool…even better if he works on his game.
If he’s just goin’ to party then there’s a prob. I would think that is NOT the case, so I’m not too worried about it.

The "reserve judgement" crowd
scares me. It’s a step up from the doomsday bunch but dude, he’s getting a little learnin’ done over the off-season. If he went to the beach every day for 6 weeks nobody would be the wiser. Or if he wanted to spend time with the family, like most of the team is doing. “As long as he works on his conditioning/game” is moot. You think the team hasn’t put any thought into that one?
If anyone deserves criticism it’s how Coach Nate handled the question. He could have nipped it in the bud by throwing all his support behind the big man.

I'm reserving judgment
because I remember going through similar things with Walton years 1 and 2. He was a champion year 3.

Anyone that can condemn him
without knowing the specifics is a bit off track.
Look, the kid is 21 (yes…he is still a kid) and appeared a bit overwhelmed at times during the season. He has always said he truly enjoyed his time in college, and if he needs this to recharge his batteries, more power to him.
I seriously doubt he will avoid the gym while he is there. It is also likely that various Blazer coaches will be spending time with him in Ohio.
Let’s cut the big fella some slack and let him develop.
Now if he shows up in September out of shape and with no improvement in any aspect of his game, I imagine Brandon Roy will kill him.

I’m pretty sure that although he can get in some quality work done at Ohio State, the place where he could improve the most would be here, in Portland. I think he’s cutting himself short. If we get another year of the flat, slow, “don’t let pryzbilla touch his butt to the bench” Oden I will be sorely disapointed.
