Junk Drawer, in the 21st-and-a-half century!!!
With Duck Bedgers (and Beaver Bedgers if you're from OSU)....
I had some random thoughts, and saw there was no Junk drawer yet, so...
I like Anthony Carter, and if we were looking for a competent PG while also wanting to develop Bayless and move Blake, he might be a good option for a year.
I don't know if Alston wants to be a back-up in Orlando, and I don't see him working out here, but is there a third team you could see getting involved in a trade that sends Blake to Orlando as a back-up, Alston to team X, and either a PG or back-up PF to us? Any other scenarios where we can get a third team involved for an intriguing trade?
I miss Mitch Hedberg. Maybe he could have been the answer at point guard.
I'm torn between the Lakers losing, and the team that beat us losing. Also, I would like to see a Cleveland-LA finals. It would be a passing of the torch, except instead of to MJ from Magic, it would be from an MJ-like player to a Magic-like player.
I miss Mr. Show (kind of; I didn't see it until well after it was cancelled). Search for Pre-Taped Call In Show on youtube. Hilarious.

I am a season ticket holder, all renewed for my third year (next year). It blows my mind that I am guaranteed Finals tickets (assuming we make it). After all those years watching from my living room (18, going on 19).
I’m also thinking of marking progress by framing/tacking up the leftover home game tickets from each year. 13 tickets and three rounds left this year, who knows what will be left at the end of next year.
Dave (or someone) asked for ring prophecies last year (beginning of this year?), and I’m holding to my orginal prediction of winning a title next year. The year after was what first popped up, but since Portland has consistently progressed quickly, I made it for next year. Though I guess that means we need to do better than Anthony Carter as our experienced PG for me to be right.

Blazer dream last night.
Immediately after beating the Lakers, the Rockets began playing game 7 of their series against Portland. I couldn’t figure out why they had already started playing their second round opponent while still finishing up the first round. I didn’t see the conclusion of the game.
After the fact, it made me realize that the league needs to play some basketball double headers…no, not like the TNT double header, but baseball style. Play a game, then play another. Same teams for 96 minutes of basketball.
Also that “roll the ball up the court and almost get it stolen” play by Rondo had to be embarrassing. He did the same thing on the previous play and I was thinking, somebody just needs to dive for that thing…

Back to backs seem too tough to me as it is
I think if they scheduled double headers, we probably would just see a lot more backup minutes played. That usually doesn’t make for good entertainment.

I wouldn't go with Kirk at the point.
I think Sulu would dominate with his quickness. Spock would be a natural at center, and paired with Worf, would make a powerful front court. While Picard might seem like the natural for coach, I would have to go with Khan. His mere presence would intimidate the refs and other team. And who do you want on the line when you’re down by one with no time left? That’s right…Data. Like ice.

I'm stepping on my own post here, but would people be interested to see something like this for almost all our players and some comparisons to others?

Or is that worthless in your opinion since it doesn’t show how good a player is at something, just how often he does it (tendencies/player DNA). The NBA/ESPN provides this information for video games. I know teams also use it. I have started to collect screenshots and such and I think I found a few interesting differences. It’s just a bit of work and the images take space/loading time so I would probably have to break it down into starters and bench (or later even player by player if we want to compare with external guys).
Opinions? Useful? Now or later in the offseason?
by Norsktroll on May 5, 2009 8:59 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
This analysis is actually really interesting.
I know some teams do use this information. The offensive tendencies would probably show that Portland might be doing too much isolation and spot up shooting. It’s probably close to 75% of Portland’s possessions. These statistics would prove it.
I’d also like to see how Roy compares to the game’s greats with these kind of tendencies.

So what summer movie is everybody looking forward to most?
Star Trek? Terminator? Public Enemies? Land of the Lost? GI Joe? Harry Potter? Some other one I’m forgetting?
The film buff in me says Public Enemies, but the little kid in me says GI Joe. GI Joe looks like it’ll be really stupid and really fun. Hopefully it doesn’t take itself too seriously.
by DrivetheLane on May 5, 2009 9:01 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Terminator
T2 was a fixture of my childhood, and I’ll pumped about them taking the franchise in a new direction. Love Bale in that role. I hope Arnold still has at least a cameo.
by T$ 225 on May 5, 2009 9:19 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I heard they scanned his face. I fear the worst CGI coming, like an army of Arnolds :)
The CGI in the GI Joe trailer also looked pretty bad in the road scenes. It’s always difficult to combine real environments with extremely unnatural rendered images.

I think they'll use Ahnold...
at the end…to tie it all in with the original and complete the circle. There will probably add some ridiculous explanation like time travel makes you 30 years younger to explain why he is old an wrinkly before they send him back.
Between Terminator and The Matrix, it is hard to say which trilogy stunk worse when it was all said and done. Hopefully they can revive it.

I think 1 was the best, but 2 is a lot better than people give it credit for.
People don’t seem to remember that the second movie was a really good set up movie for the third. I think it had BETTER action scenes than the first movie too. Everyone remembers the horrible third movie and the cop-out ending and lumps the second movie in with it.

Number two was entertaining, but I would not go as far to say that it was as good as the first. The fighting scenes in the second one are really cool though, particularly the freeway scene. That is such an amazing scene.

The second movie was better than the first in some ways
and not as good in others. The first one was original and fresh. The second had better action, especially the freeway action scene.
Notice in movies that whenever there’s a problem on the freeway no one stops? It’s exactly like real life.
The second movie would have been better if it had stuck to impressing us with special effects and avoided all the intellectual posturing.
I haven’t seen the third movie. It’s bad, huh?

(The original Matrix was as revolutionary as sci-fi had been in years. Number two wasn’t close, and gets negative points for the cliche, 50’s serial cliffhanger ending with the dum-dum-DUM music. Good action scenes though. I’d rather there was never any sequels in retrospect.)

Well, compared to the first it was, but it’s still fun.
Plus it features one of the most iconic shots of the series, with Indy running across the bridge, closer, closer, closer, until his eyes fill the entire screen. I don’t know if we thank a director, cinematographer, editor or gaffer for that one, but that is what film should be about. Cool.

yeah. that scene was cool.
but Kate Capshaw pretty much ruined the entire thing for me. Calling that bad acting would be a complement. And this is an action movie we’re talking about. It’s not like good acting is mandatory for enjoying the movie (i.e. Commando) But Capshaw really was THAT bad. Other than the entire “escape from the slavers” sequence (everthing from in the fight in the caves, to the cart chase, to the bridge and the alligators) that movie wasn’t good and was barely entertaining.
by DrivetheLane on May 5, 2009 1:56 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
The banquet scene was purely gratuitous
and Indy smacking a kid (I don’t care that he was under mind control) doesn’t sit well with me. And the bad guy ripping another guy’s heart out of his chest… ugh. Movie critic Dave Kehr said it well: “The film betrays no human impulse higher than that of a ten-year-old boy trying to gross out his baby sister by dangling a dead worm in her face.”

No, but they definitely seem willing to deal him.
I suppose having Derrick Rose makes Hinrich expendable, but some of them seem to be willing to take as little as a 2nd round pick and Bayless with other filler thrown in to even it out.
Personally, I love Hinrich’s defense, but he seems just as much an offensive liability as Blake. I think he’s a good backup PG, but I just don’t see him as the starting point guard of a title contender.

I would do it for Blake and their #2 in 2010 (that we currently have) and another pick
Not a big friend of having two players who duplicate each other’s skill set except worse. That’s what we had with LMA and Frye.

On BaB, you can find someone willing to give away pretty much anyone
Derrick would be the one definite exception, and Joakim Noah probably got there during the playoffs. Beyond that, you can find a group that hates every single player we’ve got.
Add in the fact that there’s not enough money to resign Ben Gordon and stay under the tax without dumping someone for little to no salary taken back in return, and you have a critical mass of people in “dump Hinrich” mode. It has less to do with his play (which was great this year) than with seeing Ben as more essential to the team, given Derrick is the PG now.

What makes you think he's an offensive liability?
Kirk has his flaws, certainly, and is better defensively than offensively. I’d say he’s more average to perhaps slightly above average than a liability – he’s played a big role in the offense in past seasons, but this year he was the 4th option at best because of the team makeup and coming off the bench. If you’re looking for someone to carry the offense or be the second option, Kirk’s definitely not your guy. If he can be your 4th option he’s great – reasonably good shooter, has a solid 3 – and he’s a steady PG when he gets to play most of his minutes there. As a third option, it probably depends on the makeup of the team. Not the most creative guy, but very good in a set offense and at running a team.
I’m a Kirk fan, so take it with a grain of salt if you wish, but I definitely see him as a starting PG – he’s just not the kind of starting PG that is going to carry the team.

He's definitely not an offensive liability
shoots well, has some decent passing ability, more of a midrange game than Blake has (though that isn’t saying much).
It’s the defense that is so attractive, though. Portland needs defense in the worst way.

Well, I think this is more of a verbage issue.
Liability may be a harsh word. But Kirk’s offense is really nothing special from what I’ve seen. He shoots the 3 well, which is nice. But he’s not very good off the dribble and I don’t think his court vision is very good. He can make the simple pass but he’s not very good at breaing pressure. If he’s taking set shots without a hand in his face, he can make them. But he shot a pretty poor 43% from the floor this season, which was actually up from his 41.5% career average. This might be something that’s just from personal viewing, but it also seems like he’s a streak player. He’ll have a couple good games in a row, and then he’ll disappear for a long time. This is something I noticed even when he wasn’t having his injury problems.
If it wasn’t for his three point shooting and relatively decent ability to run an offense, he really wouldn’t have anything going for him on offense. He’s not consistent and he’s injury prone. I really do like his defense, but in my opinion you have to bring more to the table than Kirk does to be a starting point guard for an NBA title contending team.
Yes! Yes! In the face!

Look at the point guards left
Derek Fisher, Aaron Brooks, Mo Williams/Delonte West, Mike Bibby, Rajon Rondo, Rafer Alston, Chauncey Billups, and Jason Kidd. Not exactly CP3 and Parker.
At this point, I’d take Hinrich (who is top 15 in the league in +/-) over Fisher, Brooks, Williams (nice offense, doesn’t play good defense), Bibby, Alston, and Kidd.
He actually has a lot more passing skill than Steve.
He’s also not injury prone… at all. Career stats He’s played 76, 77, 81, 80, 75, and 51 games in his career. He’s had one bad injury, the fluky hand tendon issue that cost him 31 games this year. Other than that, he’s been remarkably healthy.

by Cablinasian on May 5, 2009 6:34 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
But if that's all that's left....
…..why even move Steve Blake?
Everyone else here has said that Hinrich is essentially Blake with better defense. So why commit that much more money for a player that isn’t that big of an improvement? You’re better off using that space to work on getting a better back-up power forward.
I guess we’ll just have to disagree about his passing. I’ve never seen anything that would lead me to believe it’s anything better than average for a point guard.
And I also disagree about who you take Hinrich over that is still in the playoffs. I take Brooks (higher potential), Williams (not as good defensively but better overall), Bibby, Rondo and Billups over Hinrich. I think Kidd’s better too, but he’s gonna be done soon so Hinrich’s a better value.
Yes! Yes! In the face!
by LeafHawk on May 5, 2009 7:01 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
we're talking about today's value
because you referenced a point guard that is able to take his team to the championship. Aaron Brooks will improve, but in his current state, his team is still contending.
He is not Steve Blake. Look at these on-court/off-court stats. That is absolutely ridiculous. He rates as a top 5 point guard by +/- statistics.
You have to consider that Hinrich’s defense is fantastic. Mo Williams is a great offensive player, but Hinrich is just as good at defense as Williams is at offense. Same with Bibby. He doesn’t play any defense, and is pretty much a spot-up shooter on offense, though he penetrates occasionally.
He is a huge, huge upgrade when you take into account defense. Does Portland need a huge offensive upgrade? We led the league in offensive efficiency. Our issue is perimeter defense. Kirk can provide that.
Also, a point that Bill Simmons brought up recently intrigued me. Certain players have their 3pt%s skyrocket once they enter a new offense. Steve Blake is the textbook example of this, as he shoots nearly all open threes. I expect Kirk’s three point marksmanship to improve as he enters an offense with legitimate low-post presence and Brandon Roy drawing double-teams.
Hinrich is not Steve. He plays defense, runs the pick and roll somewhat, and has more of a midrange game.

The thumb tendon thing was a pretty fluke injury
And just to add, he rehabbed and came back a month early.
I’d agree with LeafHawk in the sense that if you’re looking for a PG to come in and be something of a star, Kirk’s not going to be the first choice. I love him for his flexibility and willingness to blend into the team game. You guys already have big time options that either are or you’re hoping turn into the faces of the team, right? So a guy who’s willing to facilitate but still hit shots when needed seems like a good fit. I don’t think the 43% is all that bad when you consider he’s mainly a jump shooter and nearly 38% of his shots were 3s. That’s just me, though. But obviously, the big selling point for Kirk is on defense.
I’m far from an expert on Blake. I do like his game, and he is much cheaper. I’d take Kirk over him, but I’m much more familiar with Kirk and it’s not my money.

I was unaware of this, as I didn’t get to watch as many Bulls games as I wanted to. Blake not being able to run the pick and roll has really hurt our offense… if Hinrich can, that’s a huge plus.
thanks for coming over and discussing this. Do you personally think Hinrich will be moved?
draft dejuan blair
by Cablinasian on May 5, 2009 7:17 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
We haven't had a really solid offensive big in a while
I think he runs it really well, and I’ve heard others say the same thing so I don’t think it’s all just me being a fan. Of course, this year he didn’t run the point as much as in the past.
I really don’t know if he’ll stay or go. The assumption all year has been they wouldn’t resign Ben, but lately the media are suggesting that the Bulls might consider the tax. Obviously, if Ben’s back the odds of Kirk moving go up. But I have really no sense right now of whether Ben really wants to be back or not, nor what it would take to keep him. Kirk has said publicly he’d like to stay, but I have to think he’d prefer a bigger role than what will be available if Ben resigns and he’s fighting for minutes with Derrick, Ben and John Salmons.
I’m torn. I think he makes the Bulls a better team, but they don’t have the type of role open for him that I’d like for him to get. And I think Kirk does better in a more set offense, where the Bulls have been a little chaotic at times and very one-on-one, your turn my turn this season. So while I was very happy with how he played for the Bulls this season, I think he could play even better in a different system. And since the Blazers are my second favorite team and the one I grew up watching, I’d love to see him with you guys. But like I said, I’m not really qualified to judge how much of an upgrade he is over Blake, because I’m just not that familiar with his game.

Przybilla and Oden both set good picks… Oden has shown the ability to finish the pick and roll efficiently.
I really want Hinrich as a Blazer… he does what Portland needs at the point… runs the pick and roll, hits the three, plays tenacious defense. Portland’s slow pace is a great fit… he would play so well alongside Roy… it just makes way, way too much sense.
If Portland doesn’t end up with him, I’ll be a bit disappointed.
I’m curious as to his teaching ability and influence with young players. Jerryd Bayless is dedicated to defense, and possesses great strength and lateral quickness, but doesn’t understand how to play defense correctly. Is Kirk a guy that could mentor him?

I think he's exceptional there
Derrick has said multiple times that Kirk has worked with him a lot, including texting him suggestions and encouragement while Kirk was out rehabbing the thumb. They had a story out not long ago in the papers about Kirk diagramming plays for Derrick at half-time, trying to help him with the nuances of the pick and roll. (Vinny’s idea was to use the analogy of shifting gears on a 10-speed.) And some of the guys who do podcasts have mentioned that their sources with the team have said Kirk has been really dedicated to helping Derrick, which everyone has found kind of amazing considering Derrick’s taking his job. I know there’s been at least one other player that mentioned Kirk by name as really going out of his way to help, so I don’t think it’s just Derrick and Kirk hitting it off.
Every report I’ve ever heard of him has been that he’s a hard worker and team guy above all else.

I swear there used to be a site that reviewed Vegas pools though, funny enough. I think the Sports Guy noted it at one point.
Any of the hotels on the strip near UNLV would be ok (I just popped open a map). Bellagio is probably the nicest of the “close” hotels, though MGM Grand probably would have a shorter walk, as would the Paris. Never stayed in either.
I did stay in the Flamingo in a previous trip. It’s in the same area, and is an older hotel (so it should be cheaper), but was ok, if you’re watching your wallet closely. If you’re looking for something a bit more luxurious, it’s not the best choice.

We liked some of the regular shows. We did stand up comics, music, magic, etc… Just a little variety to check out (we were both sad that we never saw Danny Gans… he was supposed to be outstanding). We hit V (the variety show… surprisingly fun) and George Wallace, who was great.

Neither of us gamble, but we always walk through the casinos. It’s almost like an anthropological dig, a visit into a different culture outside of my normal world.

Most of the time online pricing for shows are better than the prices you can get in vegas. Also…with the recession the way it is…you might be able to find discounted tix at the box office. The discount brokers may seem like a good deal, but their savings reflect the full price (many shows have lowered their pricing). How long is he going to be in summer school?
Summer school is pretty flexible in how long courses last. Oregon State has some summer classes that go through a quarters worth of material in a week or two. Some courses take a month.
Greg could easily take a couple of courses (say 3), and be done with school by the end of July. This would give him plenty of time to give his body a break from the grind of the season and still have time to show up to camp in the best shape of his life. Also summer school isn’t full of the most stressful courses either, so he should have time to work on his game as well.

Get a Mac - Time Traveller: Will Windows PCs ever be stable?
by Norsktroll on May 5, 2009 4:18 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I know we've got back and forth before on this one but...
Windows is pretty much as stable as Mac these days. And keep in mind I really dislike Vista when I say that. I know you’ve had bad luck though. (I’ve had a Mac crash while writing a term paper before, so I can’t trust Apple either)
The NT core behind XP, Vista, Windows 7 is much more stable. And they’re doing a better job of making sure device drivers don’t hurt the system (That’s Apple’s real advantage: They know the exact devices they need to support because they lock the hardware).
Time Traveller is very nice btw. Not discounting it at all.
by Timmay! on May 5, 2009 4:25 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I have Vista on one of my Macs in a virtual machine. And it really sucks. I have good hope for Windows 7 though.
I heard quite a few corporations polled said they are willing to skip Windows 7. I wonder what they run. XP? I liked XP when it came out, but that is a really long time ago.
by Norsktroll on May 5, 2009 4:29 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
It's definitely XP
XP is the gold standard for corporations.
It’s old… but it works. It’s stable. Every piece of computer hardware has a driver for it. Every piece of Windows software (minus a few games) will run on it.
Every Windows tech support person knows it well. There’s no upgrade costs to worry about. It works beautifully on old hardware. Old images can still be used for new employees, as long as the new updates are installed.
Microsoft cursed themselves when they released XP. It’s going to be in the corporate ecosystem for a long time. Even if they gave the latest Windows version for free, many corps wouldn’t change.
I still run XP on my primary desktop, a quad-core machine. (I’ll be using it to try out Windows 7 though).
I also run Ubuntu now though. The new Ubuntu Netbook Remix is amazing so far, even my wife wants to try it.

Being an expert on legacy systems is a great way to make steady money. Those folks are always in high demand.
I was lucky (?) enough to work long-term at a company with no legacy services. However, we did had a tri-os environment (Win, Mac, Linux)… they have so much trouble cooperating in a corporate environment that it’s just about the same as dealing with legacy systems.
by Timmay! on May 5, 2009 4:51 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
The applications running on those were comical, but so customized you could never replace them
I did some assessments, and one system that was initially selected by their own management for deletion/replacement was a fault tracking and correction system. There are very nice bug report and ticket handling systems on the market, but this one was specially adapted to many products. I figured out the responsible guys and asked them how much development effort was in that system: 1000 man years. You won’t find any manager who will sign off on replacing that ever, unless there is a catastrophic system failure. And since it’s quasi “in house”, support for that OS will never end :)
I also have sources that tell me their CRT/MRT medical technology is understood in its entirety by less than five people alive. Sounds like the NASA program. The knowledge to build an Apollo rocket was lost and is now either buried or walking around on a golf course in Florida.

It's an brand new ubuntu release, completely linux-based
It’s meant to run only on netbooks, and has drivers built in for some of the more popular ones.
It has a completely different interface and installed software set, so it’s ready for use immediately. It can even be run off bootable flash (for testing purposes or otherwise). It still has full ubuntu underneath (command line and everything)… but it’s ready for someone who’s not linux-saavy to use it.
I was very happy with it. The wife was surprised at how nice it was and gave it a “wow”… she’s not a linux fan. The only thing I change is that I improve the font used on it.

i dont know anything about linux…but will MS office, Photoshop, and Firefox work on linux? I know it probably wont work on a netbook.
I got 6 years of playoff blue balls going on, and I'm ready to release. GO BLAZERS. ~Mortimer
by Philthyanimal on May 5, 2009 7:44 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Firefox is the default browser on most linux installs (Ubuntu included)
All the add-ons work and everything.
Since Ubuntu’s not a Microsoft product, Office and Photoshop don’t work on it. (There are ways to make it work, but not a way you’d want to deal with).
Linux has alternatives to both of those though. (Typically OpenOffice and Gimp). They’re not as full-featured, and you’d miss the real thing if they’re important to you. But they work fine for basic functionality in a pinch. Plus there’s online versions of Office like Google Docs.
BTW Office would run ok on a netbook with Windows XP. You’d be frustrated by the lack of screen real-estate, and it would be a bit slow but you could use them well enough.
Photoshop would struggle badly. The new dual-cores would help, but still. I have a dual-core notebook. It can handle running most videos, but I wouldn’t do anything more cpu-intensive than that.

Looks like Clear has a USB modem that works anywhere in their service area
Assuming that’s the case, I don’t see any reason it wouldn’t work with a netbook using XP, with the modem plugged into the USB port. I wouldn’t expect it to easily work in Ubuntu yet btw.
There are netbooks listed as coming out this year that have built-in WiMAX modems (which is what Clear uses). There’s none on the market yet though, and dates change regularly. If you’re not in a hurry, you might watch for them.
You wouldn’t need this thing, but this is so, so, so cool. It basically creates a local wifi spot based off the Clear signal. Just wanted to note it for my own amusement. I know that Burgerville well too… I recognize the view out of that window. :)

You know, re-reading your question
I guess the thing I talk about at the end is exactly what you were wondering about, so I guess you might need it. :)
You should be able to plug a usb modem directly into the laptop too though. At least I presume, I’m not fully up on how Clear works, though I look forward to checking it out later.
by Timmay! on May 5, 2009 8:08 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
If you used it with the Wifi device, it would work like a charm inside Ubuntu btw.
Just not with the USB connected directly into the computer.

Looks like a Mobile + Home internet package through clear is $60/m with no activation fee also. I presume a contract is involved. That’s actually pretty reasonable.
I wonder if it’ll work across all Clear networks as they expand, so you can use it when you travel to places like Vegas.

by Timmay! on May 5, 2009 8:30 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'm pretty sure you plug in the usb modem to the laptop, then
Install the software in Windows, then log in and it should be done. The laptop connects directly to the Internet through the USB device to Clear. No wifi involved.
If you’d specifically want the ability to use the Clear service over Wifi while you’re out of the house, you’d want get that device I linked. That’ll stream the Clear signal to your wifi card. Probably costs more, and relies on battery power.
BTW it looks like this only works if you have the Home + Mobile package from Clear (I’m reading up on their site to make sure I understand their services fully)

looks like they changed their pricing tiers
i coulda sworn they used to have a 1.5 mb capped connection speed with 2 gb download per month for 20 bucks. they used to have a bunch of pricing tiers if i remember correctly. still if i could get mobile internet for 50 bucks that can emit wifi for other devices than i’m sold.
play online console games, wifi for phone, and using internet on the go for my laptop would be well worth the price.

We were more than a little surprised at the percentage.

The funniest rating system I have seen was a gaming website that just gave 1 star (good) or 2 star (very good) ratings if they liked a game
That helped them to a lot of traffic, since about all other reviewers have other systems and people are used to something like 5 stars. “How can you give that game just 2 stars!!!”

Tech Question:
I have some home videos that were converted from VHS to DVD. My goal is to splice some parts to put on Youtube for some high school friends. When I pulled everything off the DVD to my hard drive, it converted to a number of “VOB” files. YouTube couldn’t convert that to their site. What do I need to do be able to edit these or upload them?

You need to convert the .vob files to .avi. I don’t personally use a program that does this, but a google search shows this site to do the necessary conversion.

yeah, you just need a VOB to AVI or MPEG converter. Cablin's should work..if it doesn't just go to download.com and search for one
they claim they test everything for viruses and spyware so your stuff from them is safe, so i usually go there rather than just googling.

it looks like the program from download.com might work,
but i’ve now discovered that when I pulled the entire contents of the DVD onto the harddrive, it split it up into 5 pieces, but each piece is only about 12 seconds long. I have no idea how that happened.

In honor of Shavlik Randolph appearing in the music video for a really lame song, here is some insider information that isn’t really insider information: the boy appearing at about 0:18 in this LeBron/Kobe Vitamin Water commercial is originally from Portland. His family moved down to Los Angeles so he could pursue acting, and apparently he’s got the chops. He was rejected from a children’s show for being too advanced, so maybe you all will know who he is soon. We used to have the same barber is how I know these things, just for the record.
P.S. Since Shavlik was in a rap video, he is now officially part of a hip-hop posse. Treat him accordingly. I say trade him for culture reasons. We don’t need posses here in Portland. Culture.

Word to that. I see I’ve already somewhat opened the floodgates for a “rap sucks” conversation, which is always nice.
Just out of curiosity, if I say “rock music sucks” and give my proof by naming bands such as Nickelback, Good Charlotte, Sum 41, Avenged Sevenfold, Everclear, MxPx, etc. yet I have never listened to Velvet Underground, Rolling Stones, Sonic Youth, The Clash, Pixies, etc. does that make much sense? Because I would put my mother’s head and my family jewels on the chopping block to wager that most people that think rap sucks have never listened to Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, Paid in Full, illmatic, Reasonable Doubt, Road to the Riches, Critical Beatdown, Dah Shinin’, etc. Just sayin’, that don’t make no kinda sense to me. Why can’t we all just get along, Sabonis4Ever? Why can’t we?

by southern oregon on May 5, 2009 9:43 PM PDT up reply actions 1 recs
I completely understand, myself being a bad-to-turrible trumpet player. I’ve tried playing a good number of instruments, but it never stuck because I didn’t have the money/resources growing up to stick with any of them, which is why I appreciate a lot of hip-hop. Generally speaking, hip-hop artists are of similar ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds to me so I naturally gravitated toward it as a kid. I know plenty of people that never got the opportunity to pick up an instrument, that isn’t really the fault of the people. Beyond that, instrumental skill doesn’t necessarily translate into being a great artist. Flavor Flav is a classically trained pianist after all. Also, it isn’t exactly easy to produce, which is what gets me about many criticisms. (That and the ignoring of complicated rhyme pattern and incredible wit displayed by great rappers that just isn’t seen in other genres.) People haven’t always been able to make beats on laptops and whatnot, and old beat machines are quite complicated. At the end of the day though, to each their own. I still love you, southern oregon.
P.S. Letsblaze is from Jersey, if my memory is correct. Dude can probably rap.

I see your point
anything played on the radio these days is generally garbage, up and down the musical spectrum.
Still think it takes more skill and creativity to make a good rock song then to rhyme over some beats
by Peteyhasnohead on May 5, 2009 9:45 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Agreed to the first point, but saying it takes more skill to make a “good rock song” than to simply “rhyme over some beats” seems a little iffy from the get go, know what I mean? We’re on the same page though. TRUST ME.

(nods head in agreement)
There are just as crappy popular rock songs as there are popular rap songs. The thing that pisses me off the most about rap today is that all the garbage is popular. Soldier Boy is the prime example. I can’t believe he is a millionaire.

I don’t like his music, but I can’t take too much away from Souljah Boy. He’s just a teenager, and it’s not like he said he was reinventing the wheel or anything. People just hate him far too much and it’s kind of funny to me. Like I said, I’m not a fan, I just hope he manages money well is all. You’re right though, I hate that the garbage is popular. It just makes me look like an idiot when I say I like hip-hop, and while you can argue against that and be right, you have to see where the other person is coming from due to all the bam-bam. What gets my blood a-boilin’ almost more than the garbage though is the lame-mediocre music people hail as amazing just because it is marginally better than other stuff. Kanye West and Coldplay stand atop that pile. Then again, I really hate complaining so I’ll stop here.

Nickelback has been growing on me too
Kind of like Green Day did. I prolly won’t buy any of their songs. When I was visiting Alabama there was a rock station from either Mobile, Pascagoula, or Biloxi that played all the best rock from the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s, and they mixed in some new stuff. It was the best radio station I’ve heard in 10 years. Eugene, Portland, and Seattle (too much grunge these days) all have crappy rock stations.

You know we Southerners rock it out daily, Tom. That should not have surprised you. I don’t listen to radio period, and am surprised grunge is still alive and kicking around here. I’ll listen to satellite radio sometimes if that counts though. Maybe I don’t like Nickelback because I just want to know one thing: what the hell is that on Joey’s head?

I don't even have a radio in my car
I still listened to a whole lot of crap and Nickelback has some crap. It was just nice to listen to the radio and have a lot of songs that I liked. They played good Def Leppard, Pink Floyd, and Sinedown. It was educational and nostalgic all at once. Never heard of Shinedown, but loved to hear Hysteria, because I haven’t heard it in years.
I think Joey has a scar from that night he got drunk with Concrete Blonde.
