Junk Drawer 5-31: Junk Drawer Edition

We call these things Junk Drawers everyday, but do we ever give a second thought or pay proper homage to that all important receptacle of the home?  The original clutter.  The junk drawer.

So what's in your junk drawer?  You know, that drawer in which all the little necessities of life abide that otherwise have no home?  Ok, do you even have a junk drawer?  More than one?  Maybe you do and you don't even know it.  I don't think anybody ever creates a junk drawer on purpose:  They just come to exist.

Through various homes and situations in life, my junk drawers seem to have had a few items in common.  Screwdrivers and tape.  I've also noticed that when any drawer gets about half way full with stuff (which would be low for a junk drawer) the prescence of either a screwdriver or a roll of tape will cause the drawer to jam every time you try to open it.

I just went and opened our junk drawer to view the contents.  It did jam, but this time it was some old cell phone cradle that probably doesn't fit any current phone we have.  Or maybe it does.  See that's the problem.  Maybe you need it, maybe you don't.  Until the answer is clear, it will reside in the junk drawer.

Aside from the cell phone parts (and of course tape and screwdrivers) there was some candles, some extra cables from stereo equipment, a few stray batteries (are they still good?  I don't know.  Put them in the junk drawer.), some crayons, marbles, scissors, a deck of cards (no doubt missing a card), and other various and sundry items.

We had a junk drawer at home when I was a kid.  It was a good junk drawer.  The one I really remember was at my grandparents house.  It must have had 50 pounds (that's 426 hectares for our metric friends) of stuff in it.  I used to open it just to look through all the neat stuff.  There was probably enough trinkets from years gone by to reconstruct a reasonable history of my grandparents lives.  It had a distinct sound and a distinct smell and I miss it terribly.

So fess up.  Tell all about your junk or lack thereof.

Best topic for a JD ever

And well researched. I have all that stuff in my JD, except gum and a whoopee cushion.

All of the above

if it were in the poll

I try to help with everything," Fernandez said. "If the coach says go rebound, I go rebound. I work for the team.

""If I'm playing this game to get media and attention, I shouldn't be here," Aldridge said. "I'm here to play basketball, and do what I can do to help this team win."

His stare became blank. It was apparent he was back in that place, on the Rose Garden's logo, picking up Aaron Brooks as the crowd nervously roared.

Saw Pixars new movie Up yesterday.

Another success for them and a great movie. I doubt it winds up anywhere on their list of big money makers, as it isn’t necessarily a little kids movie. We took our 3 year old son. There were a few parts when he said he was scared, but he stuck it out and said he liked it (he had popcorn…he would have said he liked 1 1/2 hours of previews).

We saw the 3D version. I debated whether or not to do this, because I really wanted to enjoy the movie and not be distracted by 3D. It was definitely the right choice. I haven’t seen a lot of the new generation of 3D stuff, but they always seem to be packed with stuff jumping out at you, screaming “HEY THIS IS 3D!!!! THREEEEEEDEEEEEEEE!!!”. Up, on the other hand, uses it beautifully. Many big, breathtaking panoramas. Nothing is done just for the sake of proving the 3D technology…it’s just there, subtly.

As far as the story goes, it is simpler than some from Pixar. I will admit I had to dash out during the crux of the story, because when the 3 year old announces to everybody in the theatre that he has to pee, well you darn well better take him.

It has the feel of a movie that you really need to see in the theatre to appreciate. Definitely do the 3D version. I won’t bother with ratings or comparisons or anything. I’ll just say you won’t leave thinking “I spent how much on that??”. Good stuff.

Hey!

i saw that with my wife yesterday! It was definitely a good movie. Both of us enjoyed it thoroughly. I prefer Ratatouillie(there is a hard word to spell) over this movie. But is for sure one that i will buy when it comes out.

I did not see it in 3D. Were those glasses that they gave you colored? Maybe i will try it out in 3D later on…

I just saw Dreamworks Kung Fu Panda on DVD

Funny movie, nice message, and great character animation. Last week I watched Monsters vs. Aliens. I love animated films.

I saw Monster vs. Aliens in 3-D

It was pretty cool when they are in SF because Pixar is in Emeryville so the animators you could tell probably had fun replicating all the diff. neighborhoods in SF.

Wait.

Which movie were you speaking of when talking about replicating SF neighborhoods? If you’re speaking of Monsters vs Aliens, Dreamworks Animation did that one, not Pixar.

I saw Up yesterday too, also in 3D.

Thought the movie was great, but I disagree with you about the 3D. It didn’t really add anything to the movie for me and I would often take off the 3D glasses just to see the difference. Without the glasses, the colors on the screen were brighter. Not as clear, obviously, because of how the film was made for 3D. But in animated movies, one of the things I like most is the color pallette and I found the 3D dulled the colors in the movie. Personal preference I guess, but if anyone is thinking about seeing this and wants another opinion on 3D, I’d recommend avoiding it. You’ll save a few bucks and see a prettier picture.

I think I pieced it all together.

It was during the escape from the dirigible and the boy heading off alone to look for Kevin.

BTW I asked my wife what happened and she started describing a totally different scene from earlier in the movie. I’m convinced she fell asleep and won’t admit it.

I also managed to do the whole “walked down the wrong row after returning to the theater and probably creeped out another family because I couldn’t see in the dark” move.

I used to have a junk drawer

but then we moved (5 years ago) and now I have a junk box. I don’t know what’s in it, I’m too scared to open it…

I voted batteries: they are all around my house and in all sorts of places. They’re also all dead.

My batteries are so old

they may very well be dead. Now i have mostly rechargeable… which i haven’t been using… which means i need to get out and take more photos.

My house is a junk drawer with windows and doors

keys that fit nothing are always a fitting component…

by LetsBlaze on May 31, 2009 7:41 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Keys....

yep that’s a good one. When we moved into our current house, there was a container of keys left in it. It is an old house, and was obviously many, many years of key accumulation. The sad thing is I think I still have them all. I’m worried I’ll throw out a good key. The house has two doors…front door, back door…pretty darn typical. None of the keys fit those doors, and yet I still have them. It’s like I’m worried I’ll suddenly discover a new door in the house and won’t have the key that fits it.

I have had the same keyring since I was probably 16, I look at that thing and just shake my head, there must be 40 keys on it not counting masterlock keys for which I no longer own. I know I should throw alot of them away but just maybe I find the lock and have nothing to open it with.

my junk drawer

cant live without it, and I frequently rummage though it to toss out anything that’s just never going to be used. I’ve got firecrackers in there that must be at least 5 years old. I found 4 different tubes of glue I thought stood out. The Elmers always has the dried on and mysteriously mangled cap, like the last person to open it used a pair of pliers. A wood glue (also Elmers) that amazingly wasn’t dried close, and two glues I cant identify. One of those is hard and crusty because the cap was put on crooked and unsealed so into the garbage it went. Yes glue… very important Junk Drawer item.

My Junk drawer/box has...

and old stereo that works but I don’t have use for since I have an i-pod and no longer use CD’s, Scissors, a large roll of pointe shoe elastic, pointe shoe ribbons, some old files, instructions for something that I don’t have, hair ties, an old TIME magazine and finally a semi-recent Blazers program. I could throw away most of these things, but ever since I accidently threw away my SAT scores I am a bit paranoid.

It is NOT a good idea to try to use your old 42 inch plasma TV as a computer monitor, even if it is semi HD. Just ten minutes yesterday trying to look at that screen from 25 inches away gave me a headache from Hades.

You get a cable, plug from computer to TV, set your TV to the correct imput mine is called RGB (vizio)…..and then you just right click on your desktop (assuming a PC…i haven’t tried with mac)……go to properties, click on the number 2 monitor, hit “extend my desktop”….and then BOOM. your TV is now a second monitor. You can then drag your NBALP BB screen over to your TV and watch it on there. Beautiful.

also many newer computers have an HDMI output on their video cards

All running Media Center, one of which can record HD channels off cable (which is actually a real pain to do)

by prezofdeath on May 31, 2009 2:27 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

If you need tips, let me know.

Our TV’s are basically just used as monitors over here, the computer controls everything. We have a centralized source for all our music, pictures and videos, so they can be accessed anytime throughout the network.

That includes recordings. If you record a tv show in one room, you can watch it in another room.

It works with both analog TV and extended cable. Digital cable is more painful, as are satellite solutions. They can be worked out though, to differing degrees of success.

My wife basically swears by the setup. Within a week of setting it up the first time (in 2004 or so), she basically forbid me from taking it down.

Any computer with a DVI connection can use a DVI to HDMI connector too

You just lose audio, but the video is still bit-for-bit perfect.

by Timmay! on May 31, 2009 2:11 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

True

DVI and HDMI are different versions of the same thing. When the consumer electronics industry decided to improve DVI they just added multi-channel audio and reconfigured the plug. That is why a DVI/HDMI adaptor is possible

Probably. And the most dangerous animals in Africa are elephants and hippos.

I’m still not scared of coconuts. And more scared of crocodiles and sharks. I could have done a project catching and measuring Okavango crocodiles, and said no thanks. Lions and rhinos and elephants were big enough. I saw a crocodile, but from 100 feet away.

I have seen hammerhead sharks, tiger sharks and barracudas. I wanted long to maybe do white shark cage diving in South Africa, but I probably would still be scared afterwards.

Brian Windhorst reports

LeBron said a few minutes ago that the loss will not affect how he feels about the team. Said team got better this season & closer to title. LBJ said he has not decided on extension. Though I believe he probably will not just like most of the 2010 FA class.

Ben Wallace seems to be mulling retirement. He would be an expiring contract anyway

Ilgauskas is also expiring. Wally comes off now. The Cavs are in a pretty unique situation that they can sign 2 maximum salary free agents in 2010 and still have room for a few nice role players. They can also offer LeBron one more year than any other team. Assuming he is one of those 2 free agents, that can become a very scary team and likely his best option to win one or multiple championships.

There will be a few other teams with cap space (but not more than 2-3 with so much), and the Knicks are looking at a roster with worse role players in place. Orlando also painted itself in a corner with that dumb Rashard Lewis mega monster contract. So LeBron’s chances to dominate the East for years to come if he stays in Cleveland after testing the market is very very good.

Going all timbo, I actually think Wade might be mature enough with the success he already has and recognizing his body won’t hold up with the stress he has in Miami forever to take the second fiddle behind LeBron. Imagine that team. Who do you guard? You put Mo Williams or Gibson at point guard, and add Varejao/J.J. Hickson and any given center, and that team gives any team problems.

All players have annoying habits

Roger: he tucks hair behind ears ALL THE TIME, twirls the racket, fiddles with the racket strings frequently
Roddick, picks his shirt over his shoulders, puts his cap on and off all the time
Etc.

Nadal has no rival mentality wise, or in the hard working department. I love that. He fough for every single one of his titles when no one thought he could do it. Agassi said recently that when Nadal won RG for the first time and said that his dream was to win Wimby, he laughed. Well no one’s laughing now…

Pixar's "Up" blows away the competition

Pixar’s new movie made $68 million this weekend, despite lots of kid-priced tickets being sold. That’s an outstanding opening weekend, and only a little short of the massively-successful Star Trek opening weekend.

Only The Incredibles and Finding Nemo (Pixar’s biggest hit) beat out Up’s opening weekend numbers.

Sam Raimi’s horror movie, despite a rare PG-13 rating, made around 1/4 of Up’s gross.

Star Trek has already passed the $200 million mark, and is far and away the highest grossing movie in franchise history. However, the original Star Trek (“The Motion Picture”) will likely still have sold more tickets overall. The new ST is already the top-grossing movie of the year.

I've seen basically every episode of the original series

And I own all the Trek movies except 5, 9, and 10… I still thought the movie was outstanding. I don’t take the Trek universe too seriously though. I think that might be the fine line for some trek fans for preventing their enjoyment of the new movie.

Paramount had driven the franchise against the wall, definitely commercially and maybe creatively

Now Abrams has given the bosses new financial flexibility, and the creative heads a blank canvas on which to rebuild. While still keeping a connection to many beloved memes from the series that Trekkies can appreciate and delivering a strong “origin story” for the Kirk crew.

As discussed there are some minor things you could or could not like with the characters, animations, story, but all in all they did a phenomenal job. Every Star Wars fan should wish Lucas had delivered such an origin story for his characters.

Hear, hear.

It would have required Lucas to allow others to say “boo” to him, and tell him when he’s doing it wrong.

Funny story: Abrams specifically used actual sets, and as few blue-screen situations as possible. He felt it made the film look more “organic”. Someone learned something from Lucas’s mistakes.

I have met one of the main creators/screenwriters, a dude that colored his hair blue. Can’t remember which one of those 2 or 3 he was. He talked about his work and said he hated the clean look of the Picard TNG Enterprise stories, and went on to create the Deep Space 9 franchise (and even without being a Trekkie I liked some of the storylines, but the captain and others were lame). As a counter-reaction that in turn created the very technical dialogues and stories in Voyager that some fans liked and others hated. They were basically rescued by writing Seven of Nine into the story – Borg and sex sells ;)

They were basically rescued by writing Seven of Nine into the story – Borg and sex sells ;)

My wife and I actually liked Voyager, funny enough. (I like every series but Enterprise… she likes all but the Original Series).

The last time we were watching Voyager in syndication, we both noticed that when they moved from Kes to 7, we swore they also got a writer upgrade. Either everyone got into a groove, or they made some changes. The scripts tightened up a bit (even though they still relied on the reset button), and they did episodes like the one where the Doc had to choose which patient to save.

Jeri Ryan really did give that show an extra 2 seasons or so, but I also think the writing kept people watching, despite the complaints.

According to Robert Picardo (the Voyager doc), the writers on Voyager helped create each character’s personality around the actors’ real-life characteristics (which made it easier for the character to feel “real”). The problem was that Jennifer Lien, who played Kes, was shy and not talkative behind the scenes… which left her on-screen character unfortunately bland. (She was also allergic to the stage makeup)

by Timmay! on May 31, 2009 5:11 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

They found a got exit for the Kes character. I also liked Voyager, both the premise and most of the characters and the episodes (I think I have seen about 80% of them). The sets and animations were pretty good too. But still the very technical dialogues are not easy for everyone (and I assume also not easy for the actors), and what threw me off a bit after I noticed it was constantly using some blur/depth of field to switch from who was talking especially on the bridge.

I think I’m actually one of the few people who also likes the premise to Enterprise that space travel was all new and exciting, and the intro. The first season was pretty good, then they somehow drifted off into no budget and dumb xenophobic ideas that didn’t fit well with the original idea of the series.

But well, now they are back and might even greenlight a new series.

Huh, someone else who liked the intro. I liked the intro but didn’t enjoy the series (I’m giving it another shot though)… the wife likes the series but not the intro.

But well, now they are back and might even greenlight a new series.

That was my biggest reason for hoping the movie would succeed. A new series would be great. Perhaps another generation in the future.

Just don’t put it on the Sci-Fi network. They always cancel shows too soon.

by Timmay! on May 31, 2009 5:25 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I really liked the premise of Enterprise as well

But I think they found that trying to look futuristic and dated at the same time was too difficult. I am glad that the new movie didn’t fall into that same trap

TNG had the worst start of any of the Treks.

It sucked plasma right off the warp core for the first 2.5 seasons. It took the writers that long to stop having the characters pontificate and congratulate themselves endlessly about how evolved mankind had become in the 24th century. That was less an issue in the Treks that followed, though other missteps like Terry Farrell on DS9 and Kes and Neelix on Voyager always made me want to shoot a photon torpedo through my TV.

I loved it. And I dragged my wife to it, and she had a great time too

She’s a sci-fi fan, but not a Spock-and-Kirk fan. But we both loved it. We plan to buy it on DVD.

It references the original ST series and movies, so long-time fans will enjoy references, but they still made it accessible to everyone. It’s also heavy on the action, lighter on the dialogue, which worked well with the story. JJ Abrams did a great job.

Personally, I’d say it’s worth a theater trip. But some Trek fans really didn’t like it, so there’s no accounting for taste… everyone likes different stuff.

It has been common in soccer and European basketball for a long long time (I think one of the first was Jaegermeister in Germany). But it would still be a big change. Honestly I never really understood why through and through commercialized US pro leagues and TV networks didn’t do it. Maybe in the next CBA.

hey all u fantasy baseballers out there

i just got a trade offer of jay bruce for jake peavy(i have peavy). What should i do?
On just this season i would say no, but the thing is this is a keeper league and getting a young talented player like bruce would be a good move for the future. Also, my pitching staff is pretty stacked(josh johnson, gallardo, matt cain, adam wainright and currently peavy). My team is one of the better teams in my league and i could probably have a shot at a league title this season. bruce’s point total is a little less then peavy, but he has a lot more seasons to go then him.
So i guess the question is, should i take the long term route(bruce) or go for the gold this season with peavy?

“CP3” nickname comes from family tradition & the combination of his initials & jersey number is strictly a coincidence. His father (Charles Paul) and older brother (C.J. Paul) are nicknamed CP1 and CP2, respectively. Paul also notes that all three men’s initials are CEP."19

Contrary to popular US belief the guy is no longer popular in Europe

"You are too dumb to live, so we show you how to" is a popular genre right now

And those call-in “quiz” shows are a pest. Invented by a former director of MTV Europe, then spreading to the UK and even to Africa because it’s dirt cheap to produce and there are enough gullible people to call those at night or when the kids are in school.

The Wolves do not have a single perimeter player with a whole defensive win share and with a full win above a replacement level player. Let that one sink in for a moment.

Their back court usage leader and point shooting guard of the future allows his opponents to average an entire 15% more production per possession than average.

I think they get us next year

There were close 3 times this year. Jefferson gives us fits.

by jksnake99 on May 31, 2009 11:03 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

The only way I see it happening is if we sleepwalk through a February-March game when the season gets monotonous. We are a terrible matchup for them, especially Love. He struggled all year against our lengthy frontcourt.

proud hinrichsheeple

by Cablinasian on May 31, 2009 11:05 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

3 of the 4 matchups were down to the final minute this year

we were very, very close to splitting the series with them. The games were very close the previous year also.

by jksnake99 on May 31, 2009 11:06 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I see the Blazers being much better next year, especially if we acquire a new point guard in the “star role player” category. Plus, we’ll have four players no longer in their sophomore year.

Good point, though. A lot depends on how Oden improves this summer.

proud hinrichsheeple

by Cablinasian on May 31, 2009 11:08 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs
