Would you trade the whole team for a championship?
Sorry, I don’t post much here (I'm more of a lurker), but I've been reading a lot of posts/threads lately and I found myself pondering the following...
It seems like for some fans there is an allegiance to the team – a championship-or-bust attitude - which allows for a level of interchangeability that is uncomfortable to me. I have been struggling with this lately because I am first and foremost a Blazer fan, but I have developed such a strong bond with the current team that when I read posts that talk about swapping Roy for Paul or Aldridge for Bosh (arguably upgrades in both cases – please let’s not debate whether this is true or not as that’s not the intent of this post…) I am left feeling like that is not MY team. For me, I’d prefer taking my chances with the core of the team, as constructed with some minor tweaking, to lead us forward.
So, I guess the philosophical question to all of you is whether you would rather have the POSSIBILITY of winning a championship with our current team (assuming some tweaks - new PG, better back PF's, etc.) or would you be willing to trade our entire team for a GUARANTEE of winning a championship. Would you trade Roy to get Paul, Aldridge to get Bosh, Oden to get Howard...essentially swapping our current team for upgrades if it meant winning a championship or many championships?
For me the answer is no. I am a Blazer fan, but I also have strong loyalty to this incarnation of the Blazer team. I might be in the minority here and would be interested in hearing everyone’s take on this.

Interesting question.
I like the San Antonio model, myself. Define your one or two or three core players and build around them. Those players are pretty well indisputably Roy, Aldridge and Oden, with Fernandez pulling up quickly on the outside. I would be very hesitant to trade any of them.
Which is a roundabout way of saying I would not swap the entire team. I would swap any pieces that needed to be swapped, though. I simply can’t put the issue into black and white.
If this is how you are going to post you need to post more often. Nicely thought provoking.

That pretty much sums it up
KP has assembled some very nice players. There’s not a bad apple in the bunch. They played at a surprisingly high level this year. They can be compared to the Drexler, Porter, Kersey young core of players from the late ’80s. They need time to come together. All of these things are true.
There will always be room for improvement. Sometimes that wil come with time. From players “buying in” to tighten up the team defense. The more they play together, the more synergy they’ll develop (knowing where each other will be in game situations, etc) But (and there will always be a “but”) not all of the players will remain on the team as it builds towards the ultimate goal.
Sometimes this is due to playing-time issues. Sometimes it’s the opponents. Sometimes certain matchups that prevent the Blazers from beating another team (like Kareem, back in the ‘80s) The roster constantly needs to be tweaked to take the next step. It’s not usually “personal” re: the players who are dealt, it’s all about having the right “personnel” to not only accomplish a winning season, but to have a team of world-beaters that can win three consecutive playoff series and a ring. That is the goal. Reaching the playoffs 20+ years in a row is nice, but never satisfactory.
Every player on the team is “touchable” if the right deal comes along. Obviously, there are layers of complexity to this. That’s what we discuss, here. We Bedgers don’t mean to “hate” on current players by suggesting they be a part of a deal. We should always want what’s best for the future of the ballclub. To win it all. To create a dynasty. To smash L*A into the dirt and give David Stern sleepless nights as he considers lost league revenue because that small market team in the NW is back on top, again.
The role of the GM/coach is to assemble a roster. Coach ‘em up and see how they do. Identify the keepers and acquire the necessary pieces to improve the team’s chances of winning. Then continue the evaluation process. This process never stops, not even after the team wins a trophy.

I don't like the idea of basically swapping out an entire team for a 1 and done sort of deal.
Yeah, I’d be glad that we win a championship but I’d much prefer that the guys we’ve built up and have been Blazers for the majority of their careers win.
Personally I have a hard time understanding the people who don’t care about who’s on the team as long as we win. I won’t say they’re less of a fan, but definitely are not the same kind of fan I am. I want a team I like and that will win. And so far we’re heading in that direction with this team. Some players have to leave, some join, but for the most part I prefer winning with a core you built yourself (“you” being the organization).

The Celtics pretty much did that last year.
The thing is I think this team will have an opportunity to win several titles. The C’s are going to have to look at rebuilding soon as there big three are now the old three!
Great post yo. I didn't recognize your name, so I had to click your profile and got to re-read your JJack thread you made a while ago--which was an epic win.
Anyway, I’ve often thought about this topic myself. Would I trade this whole team if it meant being the Celtics and getting a ring (even if it was guaransheed)?
For me, it’s know. I love Brandon Roy. I love LaMarcus Alridge. I would HATE HATE HATE to see them playing for any other team. In fact, I might jump off the Blazer bandwagon if all of a sudden we had Bosh/Granger/Chris Paul instead of Roy and Aldridge. I mean, I’d still root for the team, but right now I want to see Roy and LMA win a ring. Period. They mean more to me than any other players in the association right now. And it’s so fun when you have guys like Rudy, Batum, etc. added to the mix.
So, I voted no. I guess I won’t jump off the bandwagon if we do make some crazy trades, but I am forever going to root for this group of guys we have now. I was going to add “assuming they don’t turn into Darius Miles” at the end of that last sentence, but then I realized that’s part of what I like so much about this team—you know that they never will. They’re the one of (if not the) classiest group of guys in the association. And that’s a team that’s fun to root for.

Don't you think
Chris Paul is a good guy and a gentleman who just happens to be extremely confident and hates to lose? One of the things I like about CP3 is his off court behavior sounds great.

agreed, but even though they are awesome off court, i still am a roy fan 4 life.
i’m sure i might grow to like those guys, but right now i’m all about roy, LMA, etc.
You and I will share all that we know--so close your eyes and just let yourself go.
In a couple of years you would grow to love CP
And by that time we might have a couple of rings too build your love too.
The thing for me on this issue is I would love to win a ring and if all that took was Roy for CP I would be down because I love CP and think he would be great for our team and community.
If we changed our ethics to win and we had a bunch of bad apples I wouldn’t do the trade. Different Blazers fans have different favorite players for me the team has to have enough players I like to watch to keep me interested. As for trading the whole team that seems a little too extreme because I do like story line that we have been building and the team is going to be scary good in a few years as all these young players develop, if we can keep this team together I feel we will win more then one championship in the coming years. Which would be better then a one and done year.

This current team is not "destined" to win a championship
No team is.
There is no such thing as being “owed” as a fan. That is the mentality that I hate with Yankees or Raiders or Lakers fans.
I enjoyed rooting for everyone on this last year’s team. I can’t say that for teams in the past; even the great ones from the early 90s. If they never win it all, I won’t start to dislike Roy or La. If they turn into floppers, whiners, thugs, or disreputable off the court, then that is when I will tune out.
I feel like Chris Paul is one of the top 5 players in the NBA. I also hate the way he plays and don’t enjoy watching him at all. I don’t want to watch him play for the Blazers, even if it meant they would win it all next year. Same with Kobe, same with A’m’a’r’e, same with McGrady.
I’m not against trading, just against trader bob style trading.
dinasour type of guys choir boys
You hate the way
Chris Paul plays!?!?!? Whaaaaa? What do you mean???? Frankly, what CAN you mean? Paul has one of the most exciting styles and fun to watch games that I can think of in the league. To each their own but I’m curious what you don’t like about CP3’s game?
"Death is not final," Gita says. "If any man thinks that he slays, and if another thinks that he is slain, neither knows the truth. The Eternal in man cannot kill: the Eternal in man cannot die. The soul in man is neither born nor does it die. Weapons cannot cut it; fire cannot burn it; water cannot drown it.
The Bhagavad Gita
He did give him credit as one of the top 5 players....
I am willing to bet its Paul’s whiny attitude/demeanor that rubs him the wrong way. He is a good guy, but he does whine a lot and talk trash and what have you. His skills are undeniable though….
RUDY > MJ
How is Paul's
whining any worse then Roy’s constant AAaaarghssss! Everytime he goes to the hole? I’ve also seen Roy give up on defense to contest a call. Don’t get me wrong I love Roy with all of my Blazer heart but his yelling every time he goes to the hole is fairly whiny in my opinion. I think Paul is just frustrated with his team mates the coach and the entire NOH organization for a variety of reasons and frankly I don’t blame him. I think Paul is a class act when compared to most of the other elite players in the league much like Roy. They both are just extreme competitors that hate to lose.
I don't have anything against CP3.
He does whine a bit, but so do a lot of players and I certainly can’t hold that against him. It is annoying, but it’s amplified because he’s on the other team. I’ve always been a Duncan fan, but when they play the Blazers and he does that thing where his eyes are about to pop out of his head after a questionable call I want to kick my TV. I’d probably want to strangle Rudy if I were a fan of another team, but I’m not so he gets a pass.
I didn’t want to pose the question asking if the team that replaced our team were likable or not – that would further complicate things and move us away from what I was trying to ask.

I don’t enjoy his method of just running into whoever he can find on the fast break, then throwing up his hands. Yes he’s fast, yes he has great vision, yes that teardrop is wonderful. I just find his style of exaggerating any and all contact very boring.
There was also an ESPN the mag article about him that was totally written in gushing praise, but it turned me off. Sort of like those old stories about how awesome Jordan would be when he belittled people or cheated at cards because he was such a great competitor.

yeah I’m not a fan of forcing fouls that way. Really it’s almost as bad as flopping, worse in some instances. Should be a no call most of the time, but it isn’t because a Superstar is involved.

LA if he had stayed 4 yrs of school would just have finished his rook yr. Look out this guy is just getting started. No way do I want to do another Jermaine thing
Bosh is a year older than LaMarcus
he’s not exactly Dale Davis here.
I'm pretty sure the Blazers ARE destined to win a championship.
Otherwise, why would I keep performing the ritual sacrifices?
"Just kidding"
I want to turn your question around
Would you be content to see Aldridge for instance retire a Blazer and lose in the playoffs every year only to have KP admit after retiring that an Aldridge, Outlaw, Rudy and Bayless for CP3 trade was on the table?
I am loyal to the team first and second to Roy and Oden after that I see guys I like, like Rudy and guys I strongly question like LMA/Outlaw/Blake. Roy or Oden I would be crushed if they were traded (Ala Drexler in 1994 or whenever that was), LMA though? I would definitely trade him if it mean Paul or someone who would put us over the top.
I hear what you are saying, it’s the old Seinfeld “We don’t route for the players we route for the Jersey’s” thing. You have a valid point but if trading LMA nets Paul I do it and I don’t look back and I think KP is far less sentimental then I am.
"Death is not final," Gita says. "If any man thinks that he slays, and if another thinks that he is slain, neither knows the truth. The Eternal in man cannot kill: the Eternal in man cannot die. The Bhagavad Gita
Let's turn around your turn around...
Would you like to see those guys traded for CP3 and years later after the Blazers didn’t win any championships and each of those guys had two rings….
Speculating is fun but somewhat fruitless, no?
So he said in himself: "O vilest of those wherefor was made the byword: 'The pilgrimage is not perfected save by copulation with the camel!"' Richard Burton, Arabian Nights
Speculating
is pretty much what we do on this board as far as I can tell. He asked a speculative question, e.g. would you trade the team away for a ring. I answered that I would be willing to trade alot of the team basically anyone outside of Roy/Oden for a ring. I would NOT trade Roy and Oden and LMA for Bosh/Paul/Howard just because that to me would be too much. I would however, have zero problem trading LMA as I’m not a fan of his game and I’ve yet to see it work with Oden as advertised. Perhaps it will in the future but…that’s just speculation.
"Death is not final," Gita says. "If any man thinks that he slays, and if another thinks that he is slain, neither knows the truth. The Eternal in man cannot kill: the Eternal in man cannot die. The Bhagavad Gita
Well, with all due respect that's a different question, though I believe I understand what you're getting at...
I’m asking you to make the call now before you have the advantage of knowing the outcome. I think a lot of people think that the team as presently constructed (assuming tweaks outside of the core) has a CHANCE to win a title. Nothing is certain or even probable, but we certainly have better than a puncher’s chance. The hope and excitement I have for this team and the desire to see the story unfold is more important to me than being guaranteed a championship if it means doing so with a different cast of characters. I will be sad if 5-10 years from now we haven’t secured at least one championship, but at this moment I’d take my chances – even if it meant failing – rather than securing it with a different team.
by ThereGoDaGame on May 31, 2009 11:49 AM PDT up reply actions
I don't agree
we have to upgrade and quite a bit at PG to win a ring. Once LA wins this year they will be MUCH tougher because they will have the confidence of champions. If Bynum comes back strong it will be extremely difficult for us to get past LA.
Then undoubtedly in years to come LeBron and the Knicks or whatever team he is on with a max contract buddy (Bosh etc.) will be waiting for us. We need to do what Orlando did. That is we must absolutely destroy LA or LBJ in order to have a prayer against the superstar weighted referee’s. They don’t throw games but they undoubtedly give an edge to the big market teams/players and you have to beat them by a large margin to have a chance in a close game the edge is to LBJ/Kobe and not just due to their skill.
In my mind the only way to have a nearly certain shot at a ring is to get a huge upgrade at PG that changes the dynamic of the team.
I think Conley (or Rubio) MIGHT give us that upgrade – as Oden I believe would be worlds better with Mike Conley Jr. running the point – but I KNOW CP3 would put us over the top if we could keep Oden and Roy and one of Batum/Rudy.
I’m not against keeping LMA I’m just saying if you have a shot at arguably the greatest PG of all time (CP3) in exchange for a potential All-star forward and some role players you take that shot and you put sentimentalism aside.
To me, Roy and Aldridge are the Portland Trailblazers.
It is an interesting topic, and I can definitely understand why people could and would answer this question yes. A championship is the ultimate goal. And to get one for sure? When nothing is ever guaranteed with what you’ve got? I’m surprised that more people haven’t answered yes.
But for me, it’s about knowing the players, and the story they make on their own. Coming from the ground up to the top is a great story. They haven’t made it yet, and maybe they never do, but it is a fun story to watch unfold before my very eyes. Boston’s story is a lot less interesting to me, and I wouldn’t want to see that happen here, from that standpoint. It’d be like Superman without Kryptonite. Where’s the plot?
Of all the things that can be expressed in the printed word – love, hate, fear, joy – true humor is the one that is the most difficult of all. Sarcasm, for example, is an art of delicate subtlety. Yet too many people wield it as a bulldozer – loud, smelly, ugly, and destructive – and think they are being funny.
Journey V. Destination
That’s it in a nutshell.

I hear what you are saying
but we aren’t talking about a one and done championship ala Boston. We are talking about trading one core player (LMA) for CP3. Some folks are proposing these totally team gutting trades that look like NBA Live trades. Most folks are just speculating that trading LMA opens up the possibility of getting CP3 where as anything less does not.
For me Roy and Oden are the Blazers and I also really like Batum and Rudy. We are really just arguing about where to draw the arbitrary demarcation lines of which players ARE the Blazers. I don’t see many people proposing the Michael Ruffin MUST stay on the Blazers or we are just repeating the sins of Whittsit. So really it’s a matter of personal opinion / emotional attachment. LMA just doesn’t do it for me and never has. I wanted to trade him last summer for Derek Rose so I’m being consistent. I just don’t think LMA is a championship type guy he reminds me of a Clifford Robinson type guy. Oden and Roy feel different to me. I hear what you are saying though and I respect it.
"Death is not final," Gita says. "If any man thinks that he slays, and if another thinks that he is slain, neither knows the truth. The Eternal in man cannot kill: the Eternal in man cannot die. The Bhagavad Gita
This post has nothing to do with trading LMA for CP3.
I took it as an all or nothing proposition. Do you dump the entire team for a guaransheed championship, or do you stay with Roy and company? I had to ponder for a minute personally, but I decided I would rather cheer on this current team even if it never climbs the mountain. I am just too in love with Brandon Roy, I love his game, I love his personalitly, I love his swag. I would rather ride with him and lose than sell out and win. But that’s just me….
RUDY > MJ
He referenced
the trade proposals floating around and seemed to put the most absurd ones in the same bucket as LMA for CP3. I was responding to that part of the post. Perhaps, it was my mistaken reading of things. Wasn’t trying to hijack the post so sorry about that.

The Bhagavad Gita
Maybe I can ask another way...
I realize my original post was somewhat ambiguous….Would you trade Roy and Oden for LeBron and Howard? We would be a better team, but it wouldn’t work for me. It’s not MY team. It’s an arguably BETTER team, but I’d pass.
No
that trade I would not do. But that’s because my arbitrary demarcation line of player loyalty happens to encircle Roy and Oden. See it’s really just what you see as the core of the team. It’s different for different people. That question though is crystal clear for me. Trading Roy and Oden to me is just wrong. Arbitrary? Yes, but it’s MY arbitrary ;)

I totally agree with you, Idog
But, under my original question I was asking if you’d trade the entire team, which includes the core of Roy/Oden and everybody else for that matter. I didn’t want to make any demarcations, which is why I included everyone because I know everyone has a different core. I was trying to find out if fans would trade in their core – their favorite players – for a guaranteed ring. It sounds like you wouldn’t – neither would I.

Good question.
I say no.
Even though the Drexler/Porter teams got awfully close, I don’t have regrets about that era. I liked the team and I liked to root for them. I wish we would have won, but I wouldn’t rewrite history now and dismantle the roster for an “all or nothing” shot.
One of the things I couldn’t stand about the Whittsit era was the laundry list of players we went through. I suppose that’s easy to say now when we have young talent that is likely to stick around, but without even getting into the Jailblazers thing, I think I could have supported the team better during the “dark days” if we at least had a consistent roster, or some sort of core group.

I agree 100%
And voted no as well. This current incarnation of the Blazers is growing on me very quickly, in the same way the Drexler/Porter/Kersey/Buck/Duck team did for those few years in the early 90’s. When I think of the fondest moments as a Blazer fan, the majority of them revolve around that team. They battled the Pistons in the finals and lost. They battled the Bulls and lost. Yet in spite of getting so close to a championship and falling short, I was absolutely in love with that team. And love, for me, means taking the disappointments with the triumphs. The three campaigns from 89-90 to 91-92 epitomize what I loved most about Blazer basketball, and cemented my fan status for life. To trade away the players that made me a fan for life for one (or even a few) championships… it just doesn’t have the same triumphant effect for me. Same goes for this current team. Would you trade away your true love for a one night stand? Some people might, I absolutely would not.
The core of this team is making a mercurial rise to challenge for the top spot of my favorite Blazer teams. When I think about fond memories, Drexler and Co. constitute many of those memories, but Roy/LMA and Co. are building a nice little collection of memories as well. Everything in between is largely forgettable for me (I never came close to the same kind of adoration for the 1999-2001 teams) and everything pre-Drexler was before my time.
I guess I’m pretty much echoing what Lukey is saying. I value the people on the team way more than having a bunch of banners to hang in the rafters. Sure there are high expectations with such a talented group of players, but no one will say that winning a championship is easy and even if these guys make the WCF or Finals and never win it all, I can foresee myself being left with plenty of fond memories of a great team all the same.

Its a no for me. Roy is so far and away my favorite player in the league I just couldn’t stand seeing him in another uni, even if it means we never win a ring. Its not only Roy either, I like every damn rotation player on this team(but that doesnt mean trading one here or there to balance the roster is out of the question).
PS, ThereGoDaGame – thats a great screen name. I might have put an “Oh My” in front of it though….

quite alot Rudy and Batum. I kind of have a Meh attitude about our rotation other then those guys and Roy/Oden. I also am a non-closeted Bayless’ potential fan.

Wouldn't do it at all.
Who my team is, how they grow, and the story they make are the reasons I am a fan.
My team goes all the way to Ruffin and it IS continually changing. But these slow subtle changes (like JB for JJ, or maybe a Outlaw+Sergio for ?) are jarring to me. I miss JJ. But it makes sense. We are still the Blazers, these are our guys, but the different parties were better off in a different situation.
Outlaw would be hard on me. He’s been a Blazer awhile, and his personality is part of who the Blazers are. It disappears and part of my fandom does with it. Hopefully I will learn to love the new guys who come in.
Life comes with changes though, so I shouldn’t grieve them when they come, right?
However, if you are talking about our whole team, or even a large part of it, there is no continuity. It isn’t even the same story any more.
We did this a few years ago, like a do over after the Wallace era sunk into oblivion – a do over to take us back and try to connect the story to something that was going on in the early ’90’s. Try to trace the Blazers story back to four or five years ago, and it really only flows for me in terms of contracts and transactions. That story was not the beginning of who the Blazers are now. That story was purged and removed, and a new one began.
A story that I have followed like no Blazer story before it. This team – it’s individual players and what they stand for – is why I am here on BEdge today.
I’m a journey > destination type of guys as you can tell. Championships are wonderful, but in the long run, see how they are treated. The main point of them is to give adolescent Californian trolls something to repeat like a parrot, dragging the glory of their team’s past through the dirt. They must be earned the right way or they are empty.
Pretty simple...
Fun question to ponder ThereGoDaGame. And one I talk to my Laker fan friends about a lot down here in Socal.
Of any Fan’s in the league…we probably have more perspective on this question given the “dark years” of the Jailblazer era. I have ZERO interest in rooting for a team that doesn’t play with some class and appreciation for their team, the Organization and for us …the Fans who indirectly pay the bills. Would I trade this team as a whole for a championship?..no way. Will I be disappointed if Roy, Aldridge, and Oden/Przybilla retire without a ring …of course. But I will cheer with heart and pride as they go on their way. Win OR lose.
I am having a BLAST right now as a Trailblazer fan.

I'm usually not big on hypotheticals
But this topic is especially pertinent. Somebody else brought up last year’s Boston team, and I’d say that is the best available model for an “insta-championship” (just add Garnett) that we have, and I can say as a one-time Celtics fan that it was not that satisfying. I think the whole philosophy around the re-building of Portland has (arguably) been an equal emphasis on talent and chemistry, and I think having a team that the fans have gotten to know as a unit and vice-versa means a lot more to a city than players doing it for their own glory of winning a ring (ala Garnett). People are starting to talk about our “championship window” opening, and as much as that in itself is nice, I think it says a lot more about the organization that they have been able to open it with such a likable squad.
KP has created a situation in which the Blazers have amazing flexibility
The only player under contract for the season after the next one (2010-11) is actually Martell Webster. EVERYONE else is expired or under option until then. I don’t think more than a handful of teams have that situation, most are burdened either by big contracts for veterans or even by dumb long contracts for players that just turned out to be not deserving of them.
That said, it’s only theoretical since the team will extend Roy and LaMarcus this year or latest next summer, and after that one after another needs to be re-signed or let go (Travis + Steve, then Oden + Joel in 2011, then Rudy, Nic and Bayless, …).
I would love to keep most of the team together, but since I don’t believe they already have all the pieces for a championship in place and there will be open spots in the future no matter what (likely 3+ already now) some turnover will happen.
I would guess when the Blazers win a championship at least 3 to 7 players from this roster are still with the team.
This is why I hate the Yankees
It seemed to me that every year they would go out and buy the best talent around and win a championship. I have been around long enough to remember pre free agency and I could name all of the players on my favorite team because they were the same ones that were there last year and the year before that. Only drafted players were added and the team grew on you as they grew better. I really prefer dreaming of a championship with players I have had the opportunity to watch develop, and was able to cheer for them when they stunk, and then later the victory parade was all that much sweeter.
just because there is a mouse in the cookie jar, that doesn't make him a cookie.
Good example...
Since I’ve recently moved back to near my hometown of Houston, I’ve begun following the Astros again. Yeah, my timing sucks. Anyway, they keep talking about the records that the catcher, Pudge Rodriguez, is piling up… 300 Home runs, most games caught, etc…
All of this is great except that most of it was done with other teams, he’s new to the Astros. Even though I haven’t been following the team for a while I still feel a weird disconnect when they talk about his stats. They just aren’t Astro stats… you know?

The reason I voted no was because
if I already knew we were going to win one, assuming I was all powerful and was able to make this decision is because the journey would be lost. All the exciting wins, heartbraking losses of a season would become boring, which would demean the whole reason I watch the game.
What's a team to you?
To me, this comes down to a question of what the team means to an individual fan or observer. Is it the colors and the name, or is it the guys on the roster?
This question has changed quite a bit with the changing landscape of free agency. Players do come and go much more frequently, so it can be harder to form attachments and relationships with them. Meanwhile, the team as an organization remains mostly a constant (moving cities, new ownership, and wholesale management changes aside).
I watch basketball because I love the sport and the players who play it, especially “my” players. The Blazers are my team, but not just because I’m an Oregonian. They earned my fandom with their fantastic rebuilding effort that has resulted in the great team we now have. And it’s the players that really spurred that, although with plenty of credit given to Kevin Pritchard and Paul Allen, too. But it really boils down to how much I like all of the guys on the roster. And not just as players, but as people.
If the complete team trade that ThereGoDaGame proposed came about, I would most certainly not be happy, but I’d grow to accept it because I am a Blazer fan. I’d be really happy for the players if they won a championship elsewhere, but I don’t think I’d change my allegiance to follow them on another team. I also would feel pretty cheap about a championship that I hadn’t been able to see developing for years. I’d be happy, but it would be muted, and I certainly wouldn’t journey to Portland to take part in a championship parade.
As others have said, I think it’s more about the journey than the destination. It’s about the relationship I have to the players and how it’s changed with them. I’d rather rise and fall with guys I like and know, even if it doesn’t end with a trophy.
I like the faces more than the colors.

Well said, Diesel
I think that captures my sentiment as well.

Werd...
“I like the faces more than the colors.” Amen.
Our guys represent our city. I love the group that we have right now, and hope that we can feel the same about the groups of the future. I would like to see Roy, LA, Greg and their supporting cast get it done because they rep us so well.
I don't think so. I really like this team, and they really grew on me from the beginning. I can't say I
felt this way about the Sebastian Telfair and Ruben Patterson Blazers. I would really like to see this team play for the next 10 years.
Easy to say no in comparison to the Jail Blazers
I would much rather root for this team, even if they fall short, than root for a championship winning Jail Blazer squad.
This isn’t the only set of players I could root for, though. If other quality guys replaced core players on the team, I could get behind them … with time. You couldn’t just slap Blazer jerseys on the Cavs and sweep me away overnight.
An interesting twist to your poll question..
I wonder how people would answer if the poll has an addendum that if we chose to stay with “our” guys, the cost would be that they would not win the championship. That might be a less lopsided poll…
That said, I identify with this group as much or more than I did with the Drexler era teams, and feel filthy talking about disbanding.
Do you mean the actual players or the entire franchise?
The players don’t mean anything to me, it’s the winning I’m after. A lot of people say that, but then they want to keep Travis Outlaw and draft a bunch of intriguing new rookies. So give me one title and I would be willing to kick them all out on the street. I’m not a “OMG Superstar pee myself” kind of guy.
On the other hand I would not trade the entire franchise for one title.

Err, that said...win a bunch and come really close for awhile and even that's enough to earn you my everlasting love
