Understandable

A lot of people counted Denver out with AI. That one move made a complete turn around for both Denver and Detroit.

KP makes small moves that the media just isn't interested in really.

He chose to turn this franchise around without any blockbuster deals or major free agent signings. That is just in his nature. I would be surprised if we ever saw KP win executive of the year.

Can I get a headband? One for my peeps, one for the fans in the really cheap seats, one for my momma, one for the mayor, and if you wanna get down with the players, YOU GOTTA GET A HEADBAND!

Oh, haha, goes to show what I know.

Please make sure that my last comment is stricken from the record for lack of knowledge.

And a good deal for Renaldo Balkman to round out their rotation

And they realized giving Nene more time would be worth it, plus sending Camby away saved a lot of money.

JR wasn't exactly a scrap heap pick up

way more about Birdman, Dahntay and AC than re-signing JR to a reasonable deal, and of course the obvious Chauncey trade

by Royster on May 3, 2009 9:53 PM PDT up reply actions

That Chauncey move was huge.

Not to mention they took a chance on Birdman and it paid off in big ways.

KP didn't get a single vote.
DENVER — Nuggets vice president of basketball operations Mark Warkentien has been named the NBA’s executive of the year.

Warkentien was the architect of the biggest deal in the NBA this season, trading Allen Iverson for Chauncey Billups. The move sparked Denver’s franchise-tying 54-win regular season and the Nuggets’ first playoff series win in 15 years.

He received nine of 30 votes from a panel of NBA executives in results announced Sunday.

Cleveland’s Danny Ferry finished second with seven votes, Orlando’s Otis Smith finished third with six votes, the Los Angeles Lakers’ Mitch Kupchak and Chicago’s John Paxson were tied for fourth with two votes apiece, and Denver’s Rex Chapman, Houston’s Darryl Morey, Utah’s Kevin O’Connor, Oklahoma City’s Sam Presti each received one vote.

I guess when you consider what KP did just this year…

I still stick with the idea that "the e-mail" caused this

This was basically the other general managers making a point to Portland for sending the mail.

I mean…. Wow, the Nuggets went from 50 to 54 wins this year. I know their GM did some good stuff (the Billups trade was great), but come on.

And if you’re just voting based on this year’s GM activity… the Lakers?

by Timmay! on May 3, 2009 12:42 PM PDT up reply actions

he got four rookies

sorry, but it doesn’t translate to awards this year. His work in the Roy/aldridge/sergio draft really couldn’t make a splash till this year, three years after. Mark Warkentien made moves that made Denver a contender overnight

by svlittle on May 3, 2009 5:33 PM PDT up reply actions

KP didn't really do anything this year

Ferry stole Mo Williams, Smith salvaged his season with the Rafer pickup, Kupchak stole Shannon Brown while simultaneously dumping Radman’s contract, and Paxson somehow managed to turn Hughes and Gooden into two solid contributors. The only guy who I don’t really understand getting votes on there is O’Connor.

by Royster on May 3, 2009 9:56 PM PDT up reply actions

I knew Denver Nuggets GM Mark Warkentien would win the 2008-2009 NBA Executive of the Year Award.

It was undeniably the right choice, too. I even said this way back on 12/7/2008.

Mark Warkentien has done an excellent job these past several months. With regards to the Marcus Camby trade, I’m shocked that people didn’t understand how amazing of a salary dump that was from the onset. Camby, who’s hugely overrated by unbalanced statistical metrics such as Wages of Wins, exemplifies how gobbling up numerous rebounds and tallying up eye-popping blocks via weakside help doesn’t make someone a great defender.

Warkentien, by the way, is currently on pace to win this season’s NBA Executive of the Year Award."

http://www.blazersedge.com/2008/12/7/684119/postgame-geek-out-thread#10526801

On a side note, anyone who believes that Kevin Pritchard should’ve won that award this season is a nutjob.

by AK1984 on May 3, 2009 1:02 PM PDT reply actions

Was there a better trade this year than Billups/Iverson?

No. Denver cashed in on that move, big time. If there’s a worst GM award, it goes to Detroit, for the same reason.

KP’s best move for us this year was probably Batum, which doesn’t even come close. We picked up Rudy last year, which was quite wily and turned out great, but the fact that a lot of the national media sees Greg as a bust cancels that out. Besides, the award is for this year. I think KP has done a great job, but giving him that award this year wouldn’t seem right.

The worst NBA front office executive this season is Mike Dunleavy, Sr. of the Los Angeles Clippers.

1. On 7/10/2008, he signed Baron Davis to a five-year, $65,000,000 contract.

2. On 7/16/2008, he traded a 2010 second-round draft pick to the Denver Nuggets for Marcus Camby.

3. On 7/28/2009, he signed Ricky Davis to a two-year, $4,700,000 contract.

4. On 10/7/2009, he screwed over Elgin Baylor.

5. On 11/16/2008, he traded Cuttino Mobley and Tim Thomas to the New York Knicks for Zach Randolph and Mardy Collins.

Yeah, Dunleavy, Sr. runs away with this dishonorable mention.

by AK1984 on May 3, 2009 7:54 PM PDT up reply actions

On 7/15/2008, I made the following comments.

This is a solid trade for both teams.

The Denver Nuggets needed to cut salary from its payroll, while the Los Angeles Clippers needed a guy such as Marcus Camby — who’s a top-notch weakside help defender, but awful regarding man-to-man interior defense — to replace Elton Brand. It’s one of those deals that, all things considered, makes sense for all parties involved in it.

Also, Camby is a serviceable face-to-the-basket scorer around the high-post; thus, he’s the right type of player to pair in the frontline with a traditional pivotman in Chris Kaman, who’s a dominant banger down on the low block. Kaman is decent regarding one-on-one low-post defense, too, so that’ll compensate for Camby’s weaknesses in that department."

http://www.blazersedge.com/2008/7/15/572360/camby-to-the-clippers#7424405

At the time of the trade, I liked it for both teams. Yet, once the Los Angeles Clippers traded for Zach Randolph — which was a mammoth blunder — it retroactively made the Marcus Camby deal look like a foolish, haphazard move.

by AK1984 on May 3, 2009 11:21 PM PDT up reply actions

i wouldnt say the trade was unjustified

they gambled hoping some change would revitalize this team…sadly they went from a borderline contending team to a borderline playoff team. oh well…hopefully we can get some of their scraps in a firesale.

Doesn't bother me too much

I’d rather we win championships first before receiving any awards.

Meh

i think the same reason Nate didn’t win coach of the year is the reason why KP didn’t win. The billups trade was a blackbuster and had a huge impact on the nuggets, but it was just one move. While a lot would agree KP is one of, if not the best GM in the league, the award is the GM of the year. Just like nate, KP’s accomplishments should be seen in the long run, not in the span of one year.

1) Billups
2) That weird front office letter to Memphis
3) The term “Pritchslapped”

no surprises here

I love the title

of JC’s report. Often the author doesn’t get to pick the title, but I wonder who approved a “?!?!” for the heading. First time I’ve seen that in a newspaper.

I don't understand Canzano being so incredulous

If KP ever deserved the award, it was for landing Roy. KP wasn’t remotely deserving of it this year.

by jksnake99 on May 3, 2009 9:27 PM PDT up reply actions

the pick for Roy

if you could do a retroactive exec of the year…kp would have won it that year. no one knew brandon would have been this good this fast a few years ago.

He updated the Blake error :)
You should get your years in order John. Blake was brought back as a free agent on July 13th 2007. KP should get votes for executive of the year, but he can’t get credit for that move for the 2008-09 season. – Norsktroll

(REPLY FROM JC: Good catch. Fixed. Updated with trades that brought Batum and Bayless. And the posters are right on Miles.)

by Norsktroll on May 3, 2009 11:07 PM PDT up reply actions

not surprised

Greg and Jerryd both did not have great years. Plus a lot of people wanted to see Portland make a trade at the deadline using RLEC and KP didn’t make the move (which I agreed with).

lol KP didn't deserve it this year

He had a chance to improve the roster, he gambled and lost. I mean really…tell me what great moves he made this season.

Beaten by a lower seed because you decided to stand pat = lose

This is an Executive of the Year award. The key words being of the Year. And the Blazers were favored going into the playoffs THIS YEAR except that the players KP decided to stand pat with – namely Sergio and Outlaw – were horrible and were big reasons for the early exit.

That’s lose. You can make the argument that decision will pay off in the long run but as far as THIS YEAR (and all the awards that go along with it), that’s lose.
