"Man, seriously..." (KP quote) - updated
if you only knew who I was talking about," said Pritchard to Canzano after hanging up his phone. (Does one "hang up" a cell phone? "ring off"? turn off?. End call?) Anyway, to continue...
Maybe I'm reading more into that than is warranted, but it came across to me that KP was a little excited. Now maybe he was talking about someone and the other end of the line was "no no no", but let's say the conversation was productive and he really was excited.
WHO would get Pritchard exited?
Doubtful a draft pick because it would be hard to talk about a specific one unless you were talking to the GM with one of the top three picks.
A free agent? (Would he be talking with the FA's agent now?)
A non-FA player? Talking trade?
Many of you have already said who would excite you if we added him, but think outside your fan box. Ignoring logic and logistics, just knowing the player might be available - who would get KP excited?
The first name that came into my head was Chris Paul.
Now it's your turn.
EDIT: OK OK. I can see from the first few posted comments that what I intended did not come across well at all.
I am not asking if you believe what Canzano wrote is indeed the BFT. I am not asking if you think KP's quote was a cover-up, spin, or red herring. Just suspend all judgment and PRETEND that KP is actually excited about a player he just learned might be available. Don't use logic (would this player fit - if KP is excited it means he figures he can MAKE him fit - maybe by trading someone we love); don't use logistics - if KP wants someone he gets him.
And to repeat myself - not who would excite you - who would excite KP?
(Maybe this was a stupid question to ask of a mostly-guy fanbase?)

of course
but I was just using that as a lead-in. Suspend belief – forget the quote, the source – pretend KP IS excited about someone he is talking about. Who would that player be?

it was fun… and I imagined Chris Paul.

Its possible KP was talking about Chris Paul...
… but if he was, he was not talking about any sort of an imminent trade because without Chris Paul, New Orleans is barely even an NBA team and nobody would go to their games.
Most likely, he was just toying with Canzano.

A distinct possibility
And either Canzano is too dense to notice the sarcasm or intentionally avoided reporting it.
KP was probably talking to his mom.

If you're trying to move a team, you don't want anyone coming to your games
The only way to get people to stop coming is to dump Paul for little in return. That’d make them give up for sure. And the only way to move a team is to make sure people stop coming. The problem for NO is that it’s barely an NBA market. If they decided they won’t make it there long-term, they’d be financially wise to do whatever it takes to get out.
That’s the only scenario under which Paul gets dealt. There’re signs point to the possibility. I wouldn’t call them good signs, but…. let a little wonder live.

Excited?
I’d get excited by Deron Williams, Devin Harris or Tony Parker, Of the three I list, I think Devin is the most available but would be surprised if any of them are traded. I like CP3 but don’t think he’d be a good match in the back court with Brandon. Jose Calderon would be a nice fit though, a definite upgrade, and could probably be obtained.
As for BFT, Pritchard very well may have been talking with another GM about a marquee player. However, as Pritchard has said over the years, GMs talk all the time and it mostly is just that. Talk.

Jose Calderon is really, really terrible at defense.

Paul and Roy looked INSANE in the backcourt together during the ASG
Maybe there’d be a little ego problem, but those two would crush teams together. Seriously, Roy would up his average to 27 ppg with Paul, and Paul would up his assists by three a game. It’d be dynamite.

Roy is awesome, but Paul is even better… and better at getting big men involved.

They would rather kick Peja in his back again to force him into retirement than give up CP3
(Which is a possibility. Not the back-kicking, but that he retires this offseason for chronic back problems. Which would get them out of cap purgatory in 2010.)

You say that like it’s a “bad” thing. Here are my favorite movie lines expressing the same basic theme
I foresee two possibilities. One, coming face to face with herself 30 years older would put her into shock and she’d simply pass out. Or two, the encounter could create a time paradox, the results of which could cause a chain reaction that would unravel the very fabric of the space time continuum, and destroy the entire universe! Granted, that’s a worse case scenario. The destruction might in fact be very localized, limited to merely our own galaxy.

I'll play along
Sounds like fun today.
There are a few ways he may have meant it, if it wasn’t sarcasm.
Let’s say he meant it in the “If you knew, you’d be really excited” way, aka the “I’m trying to get CP3” concept. This is basically a list of players who are very good, but due to unusual circumstances, might be available.
- Chris Paul (financial concerns)
- Kobe Bryant (opt-out)
- Hedo Turkoglu
- Steve Nash
- Chris Bosh
- Amare Stoudamire
- Shane Battier
- Caron Butler
- Tayshawn Prince
Maybe he meant “This is a young player who has potential but may be moved for the right pieces”:
- Mike Conley Jr
- Gerald Wallace
- Ramon Sessions
Or maybe he was talking about controversial players (ie. if Canzano only knew, he could babble on for weeks to create controversy and ratings)
- Baron Davis
- Kobe Bryant (he belongs here too)
- Chris Anderson
Feel free to join in. :)

Would probably be excited to talk with/about him:
- Ricky Rubio/his agent
- Tony Parker
- Danny Granger
- Gilbert Arenas
- Kirk Hinrich
Maybe not enough to get KP really excited:
- Trevor Ariza
- Antawn Jamison
- Richard Jefferson
Odd:
- Rasheed Wallace
- Mark Cuban
- Obama :)

Men have a higher tendency to take a more rational/logical approach to speculation
IE: A lot more responses in the “This could never happen anyway, so why waste time on the conjecture?” vein. That’s not to say all, but a greater tendency. We’re more black and white, whereas women tend to be able to see a range of possibilities all being “correct”.

As good as Paul is, his flopping is embarrasing.
For that reason I’d rather have Deron. Championships either way…
Plus I prefer Deron’s D over Paul’s steal gambles.

No
I was talking about that particular scenario, trading for the number 1 pick would already cost us a lot, then trading it back for Durant would probably cost us even more, and for what ? For another scorer at SF ?
And about Paul, seriously, what can he POSSIBLY bring to this team if you trade away one of our young promising big men ? I would never trade him for Roy either. And rudy ? I would wait a year and see how he develops, but I admire Rudy’s game.. from his offball movement to his scoring versatility. What does Paul bring to this team other than defense and passing…he’s not that good of a scorer if you think about it, roy’s better… and at the cost of what? Trade away all our team for a superstar so we could duplicate what he did in NO ? A PG’s not worth all this trouble.
Think back for a while, and tell me how often do teams revolving around a dynamic backcourt win a championship ? Not the spurs.. nor the pistons.. sure as hell not Boston. The Lakers had Shaq.

Could be Durant
KP might have been talking about Durant. Seeing his name mentioned in this post made me think of their semi-problem of having two talented small forwards (Jeff Green the other). OKC was looking to make a move last season in acquiring Chandler, and maybe they are interested in Pryzbilla now at the center spot. Perhaps OKC thinks Green can carry them at SF for the long term and wants to improve the team through trade. I looked at their roster and they don’t have a true shooting guard. Durant and Sefolosha are the only candidates. So, maybe OKC is interested in Pryzbilla, Rudy, and whatever else it would take outside of Roy, Aldridge, and Oden. If they want too much for Durant maybe we could acquire Green by giving away less. He would fit our team great with his hustle, shooting, and length. The guy is obviously still getting better, and he’s good now.

Oye vey
That IS a naught thing to think.
You’d get a guy who hardly scores more, has more turnovers than assists, plays NO defense, and while younger doesn’t really stand to improve much in the areas of playmaking and defense?
Oye vey, my friend!
Your main perimeter dude has to be able to get others involved, or you ain’t gonna be a good team. Or have a killer playmaker with him— but if your main dude has to have the ball to do his thang, and he doesn’t help anyone else on the team, you got Durant or Kevin Martin.
Good offensive stats; doesn’t help anyone else.

Already posted this on the fanshot talking about this very issue, but here it is again, why I think there is a chance KP may have been talking about Deron Williams.
A good friend of mine is best friends with a big time blazer insider that we all see on TV on a regular basis, and he called my friend crazy excited that Deron Williams was at the blazers facility a few weeks back, when all the staff was already done clearing their lockers / desks for the offseason, walking around with KP who was giving him a tour of the empty faciity. Evidently he was late to clear his stuff out and wasn’t supposed to be there.
Could be nothing I suppose, could be that Deron was just visiting Portland talking with NIKE or someone and wanted to say hi to friendly division rivals….or maybe not. Maybe there is serious stuff going on behind the scenes in Utah with the regime change and their late season / playoff tail spin. Maybe with Boozer leaving, and a new owner, and a crappy economy, and an uncertain future with their HOF coach they’re looking to shed salary and rebuild now. My gut says probably not, but it’s fun to speculate.
Williams, Roy, whoever at SF, LMA, and Oden would equal a nightmare for the NBA for years to come.

do you want to justify those statements?
Williams’ game is much more similar to Roy’s (while Paul’s is quite different from Roy’s). Further, Paul is statistically better than Williams (once you pace-adjust) at literally every part of offensive basketball.
by jksnake99 on May 29, 2009 2:46 PM PDT up reply actions 1 recs
at literally every part
It’s almost comical. Twice the rebounder, better passer, better shooter, better scorer, ETC.
Williams is a Royish type player. he doesn’t shoot as well as Paul, so defense would clog the middle. Paul would spread the court and provide contrast to Brandon.
Fearthesword.com: "There is no doubt that the long layoff, combined with the ease of the first two rounds had the Cavaliers a bit tired in the 4th quarter."

Williams is enough for this team
Why go over the top and get Paul for a higher cost ? Especially one that might surely come at the cost of one of our big men ? And I consider Roy’s game superior on the offensive end to Paul’s… if Williams’s game is similar to Roy’s, then thats one hell of a compliment.

Say trade LMA to Memphis for the #2 pick then #2 pick plus Outlaw and Rudy for Paul?
I’m not saying that will happen just saying I think LMA is tradeable when it comes to Paul. Oden/Roy/Paul is championship next year. Oden would also be an allstar think Tyson Chandler lobs but with a way better game…

You aren't the least bit concerned with Roy and Pauls game overlapping????
Bottom line is I don’t know if it is worth losing a big that can score like Aldridge to get a playmaker when we already have Brandon freakin Roy making the plays for us. LMA was really breaking out late last season, I admit that talent wise its a no brainer. It it was my 2k9 team, I would pull the trigger in a second. But the bottom line is that unless you have Michael Jordan on your team, you need a dominate big to win championships and LMA is far and away the closest thing we have to that right now.
Besides, you never trade big for small, geeeezzz snake…

talent wins in the NBA. That trade is extremely lopsided in the Blazers favor.

Scoring wise, both of them were at the top of the league at that time.
Im just saying… talent does not equal championships in the NBA. Especially at the cost of more talent at more important positions.
If it was Howard, I would trade LMA, Greg, Trout and more, because we have a top 10 player in Roy and getting Howard would seal our fate in the NBA finals. But Paul ? Im not sure if it even seals us a 2nd round series. Its just not meant to be for the Blazers.

And this isnt the draft either. We know what CP3 does, how good he is. And in contrast, we know how good our team is, 54 wins is nothing to laugh at, so why is everybody so anxious to trade half our team away, selling our chemistry and depth at 2,3,4 and 5 just to add one player at 1 ?
We will have several opportunities to acquire major talent in the next couple of years, why rush it ? Why not wait and see how good our team actually is ?
by jbm01 on May 31, 2009 1:57 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Opportunites come and go
To answer your original question, yes. The Blazers could use another playmaker, besides Roy. Even a great player like Drexler had a Terry Porter, and Terry took a lot of big shots and penetrated and made a lot of clutch FTs. Brandon doesn’t have that sidekick, yet. Maybe it’s Bayless. But a Paul/Roy backcourt would be as good as any tandem in NBA history
No, 54 wins is nothing to laugh at. It was great, especially the last month of the season. But I’ve been around to see a lot of Blazer teams get bounced in the playoffs. You don’t want to let opportunities slide by, then regret them 10 years later. I’m not even saying that CP3 is available, but if he was and the Hornets would deal him for LMA and/or Rudy? I’m sorry, but that’s a no-brainer.
Selling chemistry/depth at the 2,3,4,5? Well, Roy/Rudy are gonna be bumping heads for PT at the 2 as early as next October. Outlaw is a ‘tweener 3/4 and I’m not suggesting that Greg/Joel be part of the CP3 deal (maybe someone else did?) My proposal was to get David West back to play the 4, I realize that’s a step-down from LMA, but West has a contract that NOLA might want to shed and clearly he and LMA can’t both be on the same team. So the starting PF position would be “covered” in my scenario. Help would be needed at the backup 2,4 but those reserves can be found fairly easily in the draft or with a MLE.
The opportunites to acquire “major” talent in coming years may quickly dry up after Roy and LMA are signed to their extensions. Once the Blazers are back over the cap, KP will still be able to swing trades, but he’ll have to match salaries, which makes things a lot tougher. The time to “acquire major talent” will be a small window in late June and early July. But once that decision is made (Hinrich, etc) the window closes and then the roster will be more static.
Let’s hope we have a real winner when the smoke clears, and not a team that will lose to L*A (etc) for the next 5 years while everyone wishes that KP had made better use of his resources back in ’09
by two4larue on May 31, 2009 7:47 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I guess I'm defining talent differently
looking at advanced stats like PER and adjusted plus minus, those two guys have never even approached the elite players.
Chris Paul is statistically ahead of basically every PG of all time at his age. Passing up on the chance to get him (purely hypothetical of course) to keep a guy who might become a borderline allstar like LaMarcus Aldridge is madness.

it dwarfs the gap between Aldridge and Frye. Absolutely dwarfs it.
by jksnake99 on May 30, 2009 12:51 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
And I dont think you realize what it simply takes to defeat this team
A simple inside presence would kill us… Joel is not the guru of low post defense, Houston Rockets would still take dominate us with Yao, Lakers would dominate us with Pau and Bynum, Dallas would murder us with Frye on Nowitzky, even Denver’s trio of Nene, Birdman and Martin would kill us.
by jbm01 on May 30, 2009 1:01 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Suffice it to say that I completely disagree
PF defense would be a concern, to be sure, but the overall Blazer D would be improved due to the giant upgrade at the PG position.
Offensively, losing Aldridge would hurt some but Paul would turn Oden into a monster and make Frye look pretty dang good.
I’m not going to debate this anymore. Chris Paul is one of the top 3 players in basketball and LaMarcus Aldridge is a pretty good player.
I’d trade Roy for Chris Paul in a second, so I’d trade Aldridge for him in a fraction of a nanosecond.
by jksnake99 on May 30, 2009 1:07 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
How would Paul turn Oden into a monster?
I think only Oden can turn Oden into a monster, its not open looks and alley oops that are going to make him better, its feeding him the ball and letting him create for us which would qualify him as a monster
by jbm01 on May 30, 2009 1:16 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Easy dunks and wide open shots and oops won't help him?
Paul would be amazing, I don’t get why that isn’t in common agreeance— plus that we won’t likely get him.
He would get our bigs involved more, be even more of a playmaker than Roy.
Chris Paul is Chris Paul! He is absolutely amazing, taking a 20 win team without him and leading them to respectability.
If we had a PG who knew how to get the ball into a big man and make him look good… and every big man needs a PG to give him the ball. But just giving it to Greg and letting him ‘create’ isn’t gonna cut it for a while, we should be using his size and athleticism and have a PG who can get him the ball for easy hoops.
I think Oden will get there one day but not NEXT season, and if you can have a guy who gets EVERYONE easier buckets, why wouldn’t that be a good thing?

Think about it New Orleans is losing money the only way they stay afloat is to dump anyone that will cost them a significant amount and get young, real young, almost and OKC style roster. Chris Paul wants to play for a contender. If we can save New Orleans money and pick up and unhappy Paul at the same time it is a win win for both parties.
