Cazano writes about bumping into Pritchard at the grocery store. Pritchard is on the phone. He says to Cazano, "Man, seriously, if you only knew who I was talking about."

This seemed like a perfect fan shot. Let's speculate on who Pritchard was talking about.

Maybe your best serious and funny answers.

Headline on SI.com's rumor page

listing us going for CP3. I’d guess that’s who he might be referring to.

by Royster on May 29, 2009 7:01 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

that rumor

on cnnsi.com is from Canzano’s article.

by usmcr3049 on May 29, 2009 7:12 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

That paragraph is missing from the print version

Cazano’s article online contains the following paragraph:

“Could Pritchard be after what he’s coveted for years - New Orleans’ point guard Chris Paul? Or Memphis’ Michael Conley? Or is Pritchard simply trying to work his way into the top five of the draft again?”

That paragraph is deleted from the print version.

That’s all just idle speculation. It’s a shame CNNSI took that to the rumors page.

I think KP was TOTALLY jerking Canzano around.

He was probably thinking, “I’m going to say a vague comment and see if he writes an article about it”.

Parker

Is my no.1 offseason target, I think it would cost Batum and one of our other point guards probably Bayless and a draft pick or three but it would be worth it.

I try to help with everything," Fernandez said. "If the coach says go rebound, I go rebound. I work for the team.

""If I'm playing this game to get media and attention, I shouldn't be here," Aldridge said. "I'm here to play basketball, and do what I can do to help this team win."

His stare became blank. It was apparent he was back in that place, on the Rose Garden's logo, picking up Aaron Brooks as the crowd nervously roared.

Why would they trade LMA for Paul???

Who would be the PF than??? LMA is going to be a great PF someday. Paul is the leader of the Hornets and Roy is the leader of the Blazers. I don’t think that trade would bode well for either one.

by jenstcy on May 30, 2009 7:58 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

If the Hornets would consider Paul for LMA

You’d have to extend the deal out to the point where David West was coming back to Portland

Or, get a 3rd team involved (Utah, Millsap? Dallas, Bass? Mlwaukee, Villanueva?)

Just throwing out suggestions. But if CP3 is available and he’s KP’s #1 target, you’ve gotta think outside the box

Paul and Roy would be Goodrich and West. Isiah and Dumars. Cousy and Sharman. Potentially as good as any NBA backcourt you can think of

CP3 deal

Here’s my proposal

Blazers get CP3, David West

Hornets get LMA, Rudy, Outlaw, Sergio, $3mil from the cracks between Paul Allen’s coach cushions and a multiple draft choices

by two4larue on May 29, 2009 8:53 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Why would the Hornets do this?

Unless you think that LMA >>> West, you’re giving up arguably one of the top 3 players in the league for Rudy, Travis, and Sergio.

by CatMan2 on May 29, 2009 9:06 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Because they're desperate for cash?

And KP has the cap-space saving deal that will save their proverbial bacon

I’m doing something here that few have dared…I’m making a proposal that includes one of the Blazer’s “big 3” AND Rudy. I am offering value for value. I’m not overvaluing the Portland players. LMA and Rudy ARE darn good players with reasonable contract that other teams would love to have. NOLA will not get a better offer than this from any other GM

So, they can either dump Peja’s contract for nothing, or they can add young players with star power to their roster.

KP is thinking big, so why can’t we?

Not the final deal of the offseason

CP3 is a better perimeter defender than the current PG options.

There would still be a need for a veteran backup PF to West. I would think FAs would be tripping over themselves for a chance to play with the Roy/Paul show. The MLE or trade exception would remain to put a deal together for one or more of these pieces

by two4larue on May 29, 2009 10:10 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'd say CP3 is known for both toughness/defense.

He’s a good rebounding guard
leads the league in steals
in the top 20 in the entire NBA in overall defensive rating (points allowed per 100 posessions)
not to mention 8th in the entire NBA in Defensive Win Shares.

Plus its widely accepted as fearless when going in the lane. He takes a ton of hits and continues to attack (See their dismal series against Denver for evidence).

As for West…well, I’d rather not defend him.

by Arby on May 29, 2009 10:18 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

He drives the lane alot cuz he has too.

No one else on that team can. And by no means at all am saying he’s over rated or bad, because hes a spectacular player. But his stats are a little inflated ,because he has to do absolutely everything on that team. He shouldn’t be averaging such high points and assists, its nice that he has the ability to do that , but it means his team mates are totally letting him down. The blazers are a TEAM . The Hornets are a bunch of scrubs, with a superstar in chris paul. He has never played on a team other than the olympic team.

Im not talking about percentages.

Im talking about actual points scored. He would automatically get less points and assists because BRoy can actually play. The big reason his stats are so high is because he does all the work. that wouldn’t be the situation in portland.

New Orleans might decline Roy for Paul. Let’s assume LMA is roughly equal to West. Is Rudy + Outlaw even near enough to get Chris Paul? No.

CP3 would probably take two of the big three.

Unfortunately, I agree

Though I think LA is better than West. I think LA is more likely to be on next february’s all-star team, for instance.

But unless the Hornets absolutely want to play Clipper-ball, their not going to dump Chris Freaking Paul for anything less than one of the best 3-6 players in the league. If I heard something about Paul and the Hornets’ management being at serious odds, this might be possible. Of course, no such news exists.

Let’s face it, every team wants Chris Paul. He’s one of a few players who could transform [your fav team] from also-rans to contender.

But the way we feel about B-Roy is how NO feels about CP3.

by sagcat on May 30, 2009 6:24 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

It'd probably involve a third team

From Portland
To NO: Outlaw, Rudy, Bayless
To Indiana: LMA, Sergio, 24th pick

From Indiana
To NO: Danny Granger

From NO
To Portland: Chris Paul

Now I doubt Granger works in terms of money, skill, or positions that Indiana needs, but you get the general idea. The only problem that arises here is that we now lack a power forward. The rest of the team would be insane though.

CP3/Blake
Roy/Webster
Batum/Webster (This also clears up the whole minutes issue since Roy/Batum/Webs could go 36/30/30)
Ruh Roh
Oden/Przybilla

What we’d have to do is find a banger PF as our starter, not our backup. He wouldn’t need to score a ton because a team with Roy/Paul and hopefully Oden would be just fine offensively. Wouldn’t be the hardest thing in the world to find a serviceable PF. We’d also have a top 2 PG in the NBA, top 3 SG, and hopefully a top 3 center in a year or two.

by Zaig on Jun 1, 2009 2:41 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Wouldn’t be the hardest thing in the world to find a serviceable PF

I think it could actually be easier to get a PF to come to Portland after your hypothetical deal. A FA like Bass (etc) would see a starting PF job wide open for the taking and the allure of playing with Paul/Roy would instantly make Portland a FA “destination”

Just getting a “banger” to start at PF might be a problem, especially if Przy starts and Oden doesn’t develop into a dependable scoring option (you wouldn’t want the 5 opposing defenders to be able to “lock in” on the Blazer’s star backcourt, etc) OTOH, I suspect Greg’s offensive skills will be much improved next fall, and playing with Paul would just accelerate his progress

Parting thought: the Blazers moved Randolph to make room for Aldridge to get more touches on the offense…is it possible that LMA would someday be considered as being “in Oden’s way” for the same reason? Hmmmmm

by two4larue on Jun 1, 2009 3:34 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

why would you trade LaMarcus?

He is a cooler, calmer, sexier DWest, cept without the ‘tude and stupid fouling, plus cheaper right now and a higher ceiling IMO. I don’t really like CP3’s attitude either, he is good friends with lebron, huge egos. If you want the blazers to develop as a team, i wouldn’t trade for two of the most selfish all stars in the L.

Because to get CP3

You have to be willing to deal one of the big 3. That could be Oden, I suppose. But LMA is more proven than Greg, and West has a long-term contract that NOLA might like to move

If you don’t want CP3, then LMA stays. But to get the best, you’ve got to swallow hard and give up one of your best

but

they would be trading West’s long-term contract for Aldridge’s (they would want to extend him obviusly – otherwise, why do the deal?), so there is no benefit for New Orleans there.

Getting CP3 is a pipe dream I belive. BUT if somehow New Orleans was desperate to shed cash, I think you would have to give them guys that are much earlier in their rookie deals, but who can play – guys like Rudy, Batum, Bayless for example. And you would probably have to take back Peja or Chandler as well.

So, something like Chandler and CP3 for Bayless, Rudy, Joel, Travis (salaries don’t match, but start from there)

How did you guys win that?

That makes sense for NOLA

because they don’t have to resign Aldridge to a big deal. If they move Paul, it’s only because they’re trying to suck, cheapen their payroll. It may not even take Aldridge to get him if that’s the case. Their payroll is high, way too high for their performance. It sounds like they’d like to move as well. You simply can’t move a playoff team with a Superstar. You can move one that’s going broke.

Yes, in the short run it’d cost them dearly. In a better market, they’d recoup and then some. Moving makes a ton of sense. NOLA is not a big enough, caring enough market for BBall team.

That'd be the start

Probably something like Chandler, CP3, and Posey for Blake, Bayless, Trout, Rudy, Joel, and Lamarcus. That should work once CP’s poison pill expires on July 1st and we get some cap space. They get one budding star they’ll have to extend, a couple decent players on expiring contracts, and a couple young prospects along with dumping two out of their three worst contracts.

Obviously that’s a lot to give up, but it is Chris Paul we’re talking about here, you don’t give up superstars for peanuts.

by Royster on May 29, 2009 11:04 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Everything is negotiable

They’ve already tried to dump Chandler to OKC for expiring contracts, so we know NOLA is in panic mode

They’ve thrown bad contracts at Peja, Mo Pete and Posey, so the Hornets have shown that they aren’t fiscally responsible

I’m trying to make a proposal that “works for both sides” without knowing the depths of their desperation. If taking on a bad contract is part of the deal, I’d rather have Posey than Peja, for example. I’d rather keep Przy than acquire Chandler. But if they want LMA and he’s the deal-breaker than I’ve gotta get West, because the Blazers have no other starting PF options. Could KP have a deal for another PF lined up from a 3rd team in a triangle trade (Millsap, etc) Possibly. But right now I’m focsuing on CP3 and what it “might” take to snag him

Shinn is so frugal

If we did trade LA for cp3 Shinn would lose him next summer. Shinn would be more apt to want all of Portlands draft picks those second rounders are cash cows to Shinn. Expiring contracts like Fryes and maybe Bayless to not totally lose his fan base, Its going to be a crazy summer. This economic crunch may land Portland a bigtime player for next to nothing.

I try to help with everything," Fernandez said. "If the coach says go rebound, I go rebound. I work for the team.

by Dragonage on May 29, 2009 11:48 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

that's a real possibility

but it’s going to take serious extenuating circumstances to make a team part with a Chris Paul level player, especially one whom they just signed for a long, lucrative deal.

by sagcat on May 30, 2009 6:29 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'd love to see Chris Paul in a Blazer uniform,

however, I’m not willing to torpedo the core of our current team in what would amount to the equivalent of a rebuild all for one player, when we already have a superstar shooting guard.

I know its fun to drool over the what-ifs, especially when we think about having all-stars at every position in the starting five, but realistically its impossible and unnecessary.

Roy is just as much of an impact player as Paul is, LMA is equal to or better than West. Oden will progress and be better than Chandler, especially when Pryz is arguably in the range of Chandler now. I don’t see anything on the Hornet’s roster I’d be really excited about to be totally honest.

I think that KP has been pretty straight forward when he’s repeatedly said he doesn’t plan on doing any drastic overhauls of the team, but rather is going to go for role players to compliment the guys they’ve worked so hard at getting up until now.

To me that means that he’s not going to be unloading stars or trying to remake the face of multiple NBA rosters, but rather simply go for guys he knows can really take it to the next level of intensity in the playoffs. That one ingredient, whether you call it poise, determination, focus or just plain grit is what I think KP is going to be looking for in this off-season.

The New Orleans Hornets would never do that in a trillion years.

Now, if I were in Jeff Bower’s shoes, here’s what I’d do to save George Shinn some money.

“After taking another glance at the cap figures for Cleveland Cavaliers and New Orleans Hornets, it appears that the trade could be expanded just slightly to save even more money for the struggling franchise down on the Bayou. It’d have to take place after the July moratorium, however, because the NBA’s new fiscal year begins on 7/1/2009 — while Jawad Williams, who recently signed a two-year contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers on 4/9/2009, can’t be traded for 90 days (i.e., 7/9/2009) — and there’s a grace period from then until 7/8/2009.

FROM CLEVELAND & TO NEW ORLEANS

PF J.J. Hickson ($1,429,200)
SG Tarence Kinsey ($855,189) {Non-Guaranteed Next Season}
PF Darnell Jackson ($736,420) {Non-Guaranteed Next Season}
SF Jawad Williams ($736,420) {Unsure Of Guaranteed Status Next Season}

Total Outgoing Salaries: $22,507,229 X 125% = $28,134,036

FROM NEW ORLEANS & TO CLEVELAND
PF David West ($9,075,000)
PG Antonio Daniels ($6,600,000)
SF James Posey ($6,031,800)
SG Morris Peterson ($6,006,480)

Total Outgoing Salaries: $27,713,280*

*Any trade kickers included in the contracts of Hornets involved in the proposal — such as James Posey and Morris Peterson — would have to be waived to seal the deal. Yet, if that can’t be hashed out, then Wally Szczerbiak could possibly be re-signed using his Bird rights and added to the trade to balance out salaries.

After consummating this trade sometime between the 2009 NBA Draft and the July moratorium, the New Orleans Hornets would save money by waiving Aleksander Pavlovic, Tarence Kinsey, and Darnell Jackson — with only Pavlovic being partially guaranteed any salary next season (i.e., $1,500,000) — while Ben Wallace’s expiring contract of $14,000,000 for the 2009-2010 season will bring some financial relief to the Hornets in the future. J.J. Hickson would become the Hornets power forward of the future, too.

For the Cleveland Cavaliers, this is the kind of move that’d shore up a few spots. James Posey and Morris Peterson would be satisfactory replacements for Wally Szczerbiak — who’ll probably leave via free agency this off-season — and the aforementioned Pavlovic. David West would solidify the Cavaliers power forward spot for years, even though there are questions regarding his inefficiency on offense and suspect defense. Yes, West is a lot like LaMarcus Aldridge in those ways.

If George Shinn wants to save a lot money and simultaneously hold onto Chris Paul as the face of his franchise, then that’s one way to do it.

Even if the stingy George Shinn is in full cost-cutting mode, he’d be stupid to instruct GM Jeff Bower to put Paul the market. Regardless of whether or not Shinn wants to keep the Hornets in New Orleans, relocate the franchise to a mid-level market with that has a state-of-the-art multi-pupose facility — such as Kansas City’s Sprint Center — or sell the team to an out-of-town billionaire (e.g., Oracle CEO Larry Ellison of San Jose), he’d be foolish to devalue the franchise by trading Paul."

http://www.blazersedge.com/2009/5/22/883793/bill-simmons-says-cp3-is-available#16069385

That’d save the Hornets roughly $10 million in salary obligations for next season, as well as a boatload of money during the next few years. Again, there are ways for Shinn to scrimp without doltishly dealing Paul.

are we really still talking about Chris Paul?

Folks, if New Orleans trades him, their gym will be absolutely empty. That would not be a good cost saving move. There is a 0.00000001% chance Chris Paul gets traded anywhere, let alone to Portland.

If I'm Oracle CEO Larry Ellison and haved decided to put up a bid to purchase the New Orleans ...

Hornets — with the intent to move the team to San Jose and play at the HP Pavilion — I’d immediately pull my bid if George Shinn was mentally deranged enough to force Jeff Bower into trading Chris Paul elsewhere. In all seriousness, that’s how much the franchise would be devalued as both an on-court and off-court product without Paul as its centerpiece.

by AK1984 on May 31, 2009 2:12 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Even if Larry Ellison never owns a NBA franchise, I'm sure he can recruit some of the, uh, ...

finest AND1 players or something to play basketball on his luxury yacht (i.e., the Rising Sun).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rising_Sun_(yacht)

Heck, screw the AND1 streetballers, for Ellison should instead try to buy a relatively financially weak basketball club somewhere in Europe — such as, um, Colossus Rhodes of the Greek League — and have the team play its home games on the Rising Sun out in the local harbor.

Yes, I recognize that the idea of a Greek basketball team playing on a luxury yacht owned by an American multi-billionaire is complete balderdash; yet, it’s an interesting thought nonetheless.

The ONLY way I can see it, maybe, if I squint my eyes a lil'

Is if Shinn truly wants to move the team to a bigger city.

So, he’d ruin the team to sever it’s relationship with New Orleans.

I doubt the NBA would allow it, or that it is even possible.

So, CP3 ain’t really possible.

It would require Shinn being crazy, being a combo of dead broke OR dead desperate to move, and some kind of souring between CP3 and the ownership/management.

I don’t think that has happened.

BUT COULD YOU IMAGINE? CP3 IN THE RED AND BLACK AND WHITE AND SILVER.

So what you're saying

Is that if you ran the Hornets, you wouldn’t deal CP3. I have no problem with that

But KP is dealing with at least some of the folks who signed Peja, Mo Pete, Posey (etc) to really bad LTCs. They tried to dump Chandler at teh deadline. Don’t give them more credit than they deserve for being giants of the industry re: the NBA salary cap.

If you were to tell me that Kupchack could get Pau for Kwame? Impossible!

Or that Dumars would deal Billups for Iverson? No way!

We have KP. Nola may have the equivalent of Isiah. Dare to dream big, that’s all I’m asking

by two4larue on May 29, 2009 12:06 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

ok

First of all, its true that they tried to dump Chandler at the deadline to save money. People aren’t paying money to see Tyson Chandler— they are paying to see Chris Paul. Paul is not being traded.

You completely misrepresented the Pau trade— in addition to the capspace they got with Kwame’s expiring deal, they got a very good young Center in Marc Gasol and three first round picks.

The Billups for Iverson trade was a salary dump. Detroit is kind of starting over. However, by getting the marketable Iverson in said salary dump, Dumars was able to keep butts in the seats and not tell everyone that he was punting on the season.

Can you think of a Chris Paul trade where NO would dump salary and keep butts in the seats? Me neither. Its not happening.

by jksnake99 on May 29, 2009 12:12 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

of course

this is mostly a pipe dream type of thread/scenario, obviously.

IF indeed KP was talking about a player, it almost certainly wasn’t CP3. It could have been some other big name that would get our attention, but not like Paul

Or it could have been Paul. “Talking about” and “serious negotiations to obtain” are two VERY different thing. Maybe KP was indeed talking about Paul to New Orleans, as in “Hey, we could take the Chris Paul contract off your hands”, and the response would have been a laugh, a click, or some version of “Yeah, nice try”. It would most definately be truthful and accurate for KP to say he was talking about Paul, but it doesn’t mean it was any kind of serious negotiation.

How did you guys win that?

"There goes Brandon Roy... the best there ever was in this game"

by two buck chuck on May 29, 2009 1:15 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

There's only one scenario that would make sense

and it’s more likely than the odds you just gave. If Shinn and Co. must move the team to keep money (it makes financial sense sometimes to dump money in order to make more in the long run), then trading Paul is the best and quickest way to alienate his fanbase and prove to the NBA that NO cannot support an NBA team.

It’s one thing to see why this wouldn’t happen for basketball reasons. It’s another to completely ignore the possibility of deeper strategic planning on the part of a business. Loosen your world up a little past strict basketball analysis and see if there’s not more out there that might affect the situation. It’s not likely, but you’re not arguing the scenario, you’re merely asserting that it won’t happen. I’ve seen you repeatedly ask people to justify their assertions. I’d like you to justify your assertion that there’s a " 0.00000001% chance Chris Paul gets traded anywhere" Money > than maintaining a moderate playoff team and losing money year after year.

And just as a disclaimer

I’m not sure I’d rate the chances of Paul being moved as much higher, but to ignore a possibility is to ignore the world’s nuanced and interesting points. It’s a significant improbability, but asserting it won’t happen is too far, especially when we’re considering it as such an improbability. Basically, it takes the conversation in a different direction. We’re not stupid. We know how unlikely it is. That’s something inherent in the conversation that you either seem to be missing or can’t get past. Break through, man, it’s fun over here.

I believe it may be Deron Williams. I know, why would the Jazz give up Williams, right?

A good friend of mine is best friends with a big time blazer insider that we all see on TV on a regular basis, and he called my friend crazy excited that Deron Williams was at the blazers facility a few weeks back, when all the staff was already done clearing their lockers / desks for the offseason, walking around with KP who was giving him a tour of the empty faciity. Evidently he was late to clear his stuff out and wasn’t supposed to be there.

Could be nothing I suppose, could be that Deron was just visiting Portland talking with NIKE or someone and wanted to say hi to friendly division rivals….or maybe not. Maybe there is serious stuff going on behind the scenes in Utah with the regime change and their late season / playoff tail spin. Maybe with Boozer leaving, and a new owner, and a crappy economy, and an uncertain future with their HOF coach they’re looking to shed salary and rebuild now. My gut says probably not, but it’s fun to speculate.

Williams, Roy, whoever at SF, LMA, and Oden would equal a nightmare for the NBA for years to come.

Webster to Utah in a deal for Williams?

Would be a perfect ending to the travesty that was the 2005 draft

It would be like KP playing the role of Luke Skywalker, redeeming the evil perpetrated by his father (John Nash) and bringing unity to “the force” (Blazer-nation)

by two4larue on May 29, 2009 3:33 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

you know

Darth Vader was the one that brought balance to the force. Everyone seems to miss this. He not only slayed the overly powered jedi left and right (remember the sith were weak and beaten down this balances the force) Then when evil reigned supreme he chucks the emperor down the shaft.

It was Vader what brought balance to the force Luke just goaded him into it.

"Death is not final," Gita says. "If any man thinks that he slays, and if another thinks that he is slain, neither knows the truth. The Eternal in man cannot kill: the Eternal in man cannot die. It was the father son combo

Neither could do it by themselves. And together they showed the balance.

I never thought about how Darth slayed the Jedi and them being too powerful before. I always understood Darth was integral and sine qua non, but good point about the former.

I don't know why people always miss this

Anakin WAS the chosen one. He DID bring balance to the force. The Light side simply misunderstood what kind of balance the light side was bringing.
This is the force pre Vader
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++-

This is the force post Vader
+ + – -

Yes, Yoda and ObiWan survived, as did Vader/Palpatine. You effectively had 2 super good Jedis and 2 superbad jedis. Yoda and Palpatine fought to a standstill and despite Anakin being so much stronge than Obi, Obi still manage to beat him in a fight.

++— is balance. +*87 vs – is not!

With the jazz, they have to have a certain type of guy to be their stars. NRA commercial makin-guys. Guys who vote Republican and stay out of trouble. Guys who they can picture showing up at Temple. (even if they don’t.)

I prefer to speculate about aging vets

Cp3 and Deron Williams not so much. You just don’t get rid of the best young players at their position. Rather teams may be willing to rebuild by trading out of older superstar vets while they still have high value. Boston, San Antonio, Phoenix and Detroit have what I would like to add. All of those teams have players that would fall into the “you wouldn’t believe” catagory. We could use a Clyde on the decline type of player to make the next step. We give up cheap young talent and get back an overpriced rent a player to win a championship.
