Borderline Blasphemy, Bad idea, or good idea?
I'v been reading all the side bar posts talking about who we should be picking up and they are all pretty good ideas. Then i was reading The small line-up and as11osu wrote a post with a list of free agents he personally would look at and as i read the list i saw Lamar Odom's name on there and i got to thinking...... Imagine this if you will, (totally hypothetical) we sign Odom as a FA then trade away Trout, Martell, and Blake for Hinrich + 1st rd in '09 or '10.(doesnt matter) Now i know some will say Martell, Trout and Blake is too much to give up but hear me out.
If by some stroke of fortune this actually happened we would have a rotaion of:(by depth)
PG 1.Hinrich 2.Bayless 3. Random Filler
SG 1.Roy 2.Rudy 3. Random filler
SF 1.Batum 2.Odom(he plays the 3 for L.A. at times) 3. Random Filler
PF 1. LMA 2. Odom 3. Random Filler
C 1. Oden 2. Pryz 3. Random filler
Random Filler= Draft pick, FA, Etc.
I see a few issues with this, first to come to mind is he is a L*ker (yuck) and is not likely to leave L.A. for portland, second i honestly have no idea if this is financially possable even if he did want to play here. Im not sure how much he would be asking per year and we dont have alot to spend in Free Agency from my understanding. Third i would think Chicago would pull the trigger on the Hinrich deal but one could never truely know.
The pluses as i see it are that Nic gets more playing time and stays a starter. Bayless steps firmly into the #2 PG spot. Rudy and Odom become our sixth men. Pryz keeps on keepin on. On paper i would love to see this happen in reality i am not sure if it is even possable but that would be my dream scenario. Let me know what you guys think, is this possable? Is this Blasphemy to say we should sign a L*ker? Is it a bad idea? Or a good idea? Poll located below

He's my least favorite Laker.
By far.
Roy is the best player in the world with the exception of Incarcerated Mike from Queensbridge .

i dont think odom would sign here
he already said he wants to play on a beach and he doesn’t really like coming off the bench, i think he goes for big money and playing time somewhere warm

Where could he possibly go other than LA then?
Miami can’t afford him, right?
Houston couldn’t start him.
I don’t think Orlando can afford anything.
GS or the Clippers? He doesn’t really fit their timelines for his price.
New Orleans? Could they do it?
I’m running out of beaches.
I think the Lakers work out a way to keep him. Maybe sign him and then trade him for Marc Gasol?

I don't get the point of signing Odom
if we still have LA, Oden and Przy. Where would we play him? Why would we get him if it’s only a 15 minute back up role

I'm actually curious as to when the last trade was made between LA and us was
it seems as if we just don’t do business with them. all that aside though, Lamar Odom is actually FAMOUS for being one of the most inconsistent players in the NBA. He’s the poster child for wasted talent. He could be an amazing point forward, capable of handling the ball, running an offense, rebounding, scoring, and isn’t even that bad a shooter. Too bad he just can’t do any of this stuff consistently. Put it this way, Lamar Odom is to laker fan, as Travis Outlaw is to blazer fan.
The Blazers as a whole are far more like my wife than like me in the sense of their physicality on defense.

Just for technicalities sake
Then i was reading The small line-up and as11osu wrote a post with a list of free agents he personally would look at.
Those weren’t all the FA’s I’d look at. Those weren’t even ones I’d really want. That particular list was of the players (UFA’s, RFA’s and Potential Draftees) that could play small ball PF if Trout were to be traded. I in no way advocate getting Lamar Odom.
My top FA’s would include:
(The Full 8.5 Million) in the order I’d want them
Paul Millsap
Trevor Ariza
Brandon Bass
Ramon Sessions
Jason Kidd
Hedo Turkoglu
Ron Artest
Anderson Varejao
(Or 2 of these guys at 4.25 Million) in the order I’d want them *essentially
Leon Powe
Antonio McDyess
Eddie House
Anthony Johnson
Chris Anderson
Linas Kleiza
Jamario Moon
Charlie Villanueva
Donyell Marshall

agreed
millsap will not likely be available for that money, and i personally do not think bass is worth 8.5, but ariza is very intriguing, to me he is the ceiling for batum, or at least the ceiling for batum in the next 3 years. Ariza would bring another good defender who can hit a three, and is not afraid of anyone, but he also has a more extensive game offensively than batum without commanding too many shots. The best part about him though is what he has done with the steals at the end of the games, those plays were amazing and clutch, and personally i doubt anyone (even broy) could make that play in the playoffs under that much pressure.

i wouldn't take odom if he promised to kiss roy's feet every morning and night and say 10 hail waltons a day.

Only since you actually presented the option...
Blasphemy. Seriously, that made my face hurt. I do not like Odom.
Aside from that, though, I have one other concern with that scenario. I don’t think we can give up both Trout and Webster. We should have two real SFs on the team. It could get awkward always trying to squeeze a SG or a PF into that position.

No Odom
Lamar Odom would completely ruin the chemistry on the team.

odom
way more money than outlaw, but just as inconsistent, only upside, better rebounder, ball handler (not that that’s saying much). see my sig.

ODOM DOESNT SHOW UP!
we already have some unpredictable players
by HurricaneDayne on May 29, 2009 11:27 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I've learned to appreciate Odom's game this year. Now here are the big BUTS...
BUT the dude makes $14,000,000 a year — which is starter money, not backup money.
BUT the dude loves LA and really wouldn’t have an interest coming to Oregon.
BUT with the Lakers he is one of 3 rotating bigs (Gasol, Bynum, Odom) and if he came here he would be one of 4 rotating bigs (Oden, Pryz, LMA, Odom).
BUT we would have to replace Mike Rice because he would have a nervous breakdown having to deal with Oden/Odom on a nightly basis. That would be cruel.

Is this an arguement for or against the trade?

I voted "good idea"
I think that could work really well for us. Obviously he’d start over Batum … no way he actually wants to come here though.

"bad idea"
My favorite thing about Odom is that any team he is on has to deal with the fact that he has choked and/or disappeared with big games on the line. Maybe he’ll find redemption this year, but that will only increase his price tag.
If the L.kers get stuck unable to sign both him and Ariza, that will make me happy. But I’d much rather attack the Ariza front if I’m going to get a L.ker on the Blazers.
