Hardwood Paroxysm player selfishness rating
Nice idea, still needs some refinement e.g. according to usage and possessions since in the current version it's calculated like this:
"First, I divided a player’s total field goal attempts by their number of assists. I then found their ranking among players of their position. Finally, I translated this ranking to a stat on a 0-10 scale."
But one gets the concept and some tendencies. Article as linked above featuring some select players, whole spreadsheet here.
Blazers:
Aldridge: 5.29
Batum: 3.69
Bayless: 6.37
Blake: 2.89
Fernandez: 9.13
Frye: 8.52
Oden: 8.62
Outlaw: 9.53
Przybilla: 7.75
Rodriguez: 0.57
Roy: 2.65

ZBo is 6.47.
Hmmm, interesting. Just barely above Jay Bay and well under Rudy, Frye, Oden, Trout, and Thrilla.
This stat is biased against big men.
Scoring bigs will look crazy selfish. The problem with that is they’re typically the recipients of if passes that are setting them up to score.

Welp, I should have read more.
It’s adjusted by position, with the median at each position being a “5”. So nevermind.

It's biased against finishers
Joel & Greg usually get the ball under the rim so they just have to dunk it
All Frye’s shots during the season were long 2’s after kick outs 2on2’s with Sergio
Rudy’s been used as a spot up shooter all season
The guys who worry me are Outlaw, Bayless and Aldrige.
Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!
Seeing as how Aldridge is just barely above the average, I wouldn't worry too much about that.

I'll stick with Usage Percentage.
100 X {(FGA + 0.44) X (Free-Throw Attempts + Tournovers) X (Team Minutes Played / 5)} / {(Minutes Played) X (Team Field-Goal Attempts + 0.44) X (Team Free-Throw Attempts + Team Turnovers)}.

For the 2008-2009 season, Dwyane Wade, LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Tony Parker, and Carmelo Anthony were the top-five qualified players regarding Usage Percentage.

Regarding the Portland Trail Blazers, Brandon Roy, Shavlik Randolph, LaMarcus Aldridge, and Travis Outlaw led the team in Usage Percentage — although Randolph’s numbers should be taken with a grain of salt due to him playing garbage minutes — so take that for whatever it’s worth to y’all.
Ugh, I incorrectly typed out the formula for Usage Percentage. It should read like this down here.
100 X {(Field-Goal Attempts + 0.44 X Free-Throw Attempts + Tournovers) X (Team Minutes Played / 5)} / {(Minutes Played) X (Team Field-Goal Attempts + 0.44 X Team Free-Throw Attempts + Team Turnovers)}.
For example, here’s Brandon Roy’s line: 100 X {(1,318 + 0.44 X 505 + 152) X (19,830 / 5)} / {(2,903) X (6,494 + 0.44 X 1,988 + 1,055)} = 100 X (1,692.2 X 3,966) / (2,903 X 8,423.72) = 100 X 6,711,265.2 / 24,454,059.16 = 27.44 …

Okay, that’s enough math by me for one night.
a little surprised at how high rudy registered
but is anyone surprised about Outlaw?
The Blazers as a whole are far more like my wife than like me in the sense of their physicality on defense.

Bayless CANNOT be that high in the future
This exposes exactly what was wrong with his game. While he was driving the lane, the rest of the team completely shut down. That includes Brandon. Not a recipe for success.
Very interesting post.
Sticking up for Travis Outlaw since 2008 and Steve Blake since last week..
This is a largely meaningless stat
that only seems bad because of negative connotations with the word “selfish”. Just like we have people arguing about the worthless “PG Purity” scale because pure things are generally better than impure things.
Some guys’ role is to shoot and finish, some guys don’t do that. It’s not a bad thing that Rudy is one of the most “selfish” guys in the league, just like it’s not necessarily a great thing that Sergio is one of the least selfish. It merely describes guys’ games. It’s pretty worthless in terms of ranking players against each other.
