Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

....just kidding.

Violet Palmer will become coordinator of women's basketball officials for the West Coast Conference and continue to officiate in the NBA, where she has worked for 12 seasons.

Earlier, The Associated Press incorrectly reported that Palmer would no longer officiate NBA games.

I saw this too.

I was excited until they corrected it to say that she will still ref. Too bad, does she really need more on her mind?

My favorite teams are the Blazers and any team that is playing the Lakers.

I've heard this, but I've never really seen it

Anyone got reasons (i.e. youtube clips) to show me why she’s so hated?

This one is decent

Here you go As you can see the rocket player CLEARLY had a foot inside the restricted area, not even by a close margin. Next time you hear a game is being reffed by Violet Palmer watch closely.

hmm

Yeah, that’s not good, but far from the worst call I’ve seen. I’ll be watching closely when I hear she’s one of the refs, though, that’s for sure.

seriously

every game has a “clearly” crap call, if not seven.

I watched Violet pretty closely when she came to town this year, and all I saw was her attempt to adhere to the letter of the rules. Can’t really complain about that.

Must really really stink to be her a lot of the time.

That's what I was thinking

I will be the last guy on earth to blame a bad call on being a woman. I garauntee it. Unless my girlfriend is calling a game with Rasheed Wallace in it.

I know less than half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

by haildablazer on May 28, 2009 7:21 PM PDT up reply actions

I've alway thought that she was alright.

I’ve seen her miss calls, but I wouldn’t call her bad.

I even saw a close call this year from her and screamed to my brother about it at a game. Then I saw the replay. I was dead wrong.

Well, at least you're man enough to admit it.

I wonder how much of a sexist downplay she gets – even unintentionaly.

Oh man, sooo many examples

but here is one good one: Blazers at home vs. Philadelphia, towards end of season. She just stunk it up, so many bad calls on blocking/charges, and post-up, but those are subjective, so, whatever; BUT oh my god did she screw up like 6 very clear possession calls, where the big screen replay showed her to be 100% wrong. That game was brutal to watch.

She’s better then alot of stern implented refs. I actually saw her in her first game against the jail blazers she was allright

I try to help with everything," Fernandez said. "If the coach says go rebound, I go rebound. I work for the team.

""If I'm playing this game to get media and attention, I shouldn't be here," Aldridge said. "I'm here to play basketball, and do what I can do to help this team win."

His stare became blank. It was apparent he was back in that place, on the Rose Garden's logo, picking up Aaron Brooks as the crowd nervously roared.

In my opionion, Violet Palmer is nowhere near as bad as Joey Crawford, Jack Nies, Steve Javie or Ron Garretson

I maintain that, while she certainly isn’t a great official, her gender leads people to notice her missed calls much more than those of her colleagues.

i hate javie...but i don't think hes that bad

i’d put bennette salvadore on your list tho…and tony brothers?

lol`

I view Palmer as a slightly below average ref, but I certainly haven’t studied this nearly enough to say with any type of certainty.

by jksnake99 on May 29, 2009 12:49 AM PDT up reply actions

lol

considering the average ref sucks…for palmer to be below average says a lot. simmons’ piece about reffing raised some good questions. such as planting refs based on situations…or having a “good” ref be under the basket on one end of the floor, but on the half court line on the other making the officiating unequal and hard to guage.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
