Weekly Podcast
Here''s your weekly dose of podcasting goodness with Gavin Dawson of the Morning Sports Page on 95.5 The Game, Casey Holdahl of the Center Court Blog, and me, Dave from Blazersedge.
This week we debate trading up, out, or staying pat in the draft, the relative importance of the draft, and the trade value of various Blazers. We also talk about Ramon Sessions, Ricky Rubio, and the real reason Casey Holdahl wasn't invited to my wedding.

Love the Walmart analogy
and I couldn’t agree more about the road wins. I don’t care so much about the percentage, as just wanting to actually stay competitive in most of them, though. I’d be perfectly happy going 5-10 or 4-12 or whatever on the road against WC teams as long as we’re not down double digits early in every single one. Even in the two games we “won” we were down double digits by the end of the first quarter.
I love a good comeback as much as the next guy, but the best teams don’t repeatedly put themselves in a position to need one.
Sweet!
Thanks, Dave!
I know less than half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.
Declining Trade Values
Listening to this podcast made me think of a couple of players besides Outlaw whose trade values may have decreased over the past couple of years….namely Frye and Rodriguez. Remember there was a buzz around Sergio after his rookie season, and Frye’s value was definitely higher before last season than afterwards. As with any asset the M.O. is to buy low and sell high; and while I agree that players should be given a window of opportunity during which to prove themselves, I can’t help but think that KP may have missed the boat on a few of these guys. That being said I am not down on the team as a whole and expect big things from them for many years to come.
I think trade value is a myth
Sergio only has trade value to teams that want a point guard it’s pretty much the same for all the other guys. It’s not like the draft where you can take the best player available because it’s the best deal. You see it on Craigslist all the time, if someone is trading his Harley for a boat, he’s not going to go for your snowmobile, and he’s even less likely to trade for your snowmobile and then trade it for something else.
Sergio and Outlaw are who they were. They’re a little better than they were last year but maybe they have less potential now. The potential doesn’t matter because I doubt after last year anyone was going to trade them based on untapped potential. Their trade value based on play is the same, the only value that changes is their contract status.
Te corto tu cara!
There are several factors to consider
First, you have to find a buyer. Someone has to be interested in Sergio, Frye, Outlaw, etc
Do you have multiple parties interested in your player? Great, the more leverage, the better
Health is important. Right now, Blake and Webster’s perceived trade value is definitely affected, until they return to the court and show they’re healthy (no summer league for Marty? That means it’s extremely unlikely that he’ll be going anywhere in a deal, this offseason)
If you have teams who’ve shown interest in the past, they’re probably still going to like Sergio/Outlaw/Frye, even if those guys “struggled” in 2009. Coaches will think that given the right situation, they can develop these players to reach their full potential
But if a player of his agent starts asking to be dealt (like Sergio) it could affect their reputation around the league. Opposing GMs will lowball KP because they think he’s got to move Rodriguez. KP will always deny this is the case, to save face and try to get as much value as possible for his asset. But once the genie is out of the bottle it’s tough to act like everything’s all warm and fuzzy, again. Opposing GMs know that Sergio probably won’t be back at Portland’s training camp next fall, so they’ll “wait KP out” and hope to pick up Rodriguez on the cheap. That’s how players go from being the centerpiece of a deal to becoming a throw-in. Just like stocks, you’ve got to kow when to flip ’em
Good job gentlemen
I love that Casey doesn’t say, “I agree with Dave,” as much as he used too. I can hear the true colors of his heart in the podcast and think he actually still agrees with Dave quite often. I think getting three different angles is a nice touch.

"Thanks for coming to the game." - Kevin Pritchard
Why does everyone think Hansbrough is going to go so late? Are you kidding me, this is a 4 year
NC player and Portland needs a hard working back up power forward. I’d love to have him come in the game over Frye. He is a good free throw shooter and will hustle. Portland should draft him.
