Steve Blake to Undergo Surgery

This from the Trail Blazers:

STEVE BLAKE TO UNDERGO ARTHROSCOPIC SHOULDER SURGERY

PORTLAND, Ore. - Trail Blazers guard Steve Blake will undergo arthroscopic shoulder surgery on Friday, May 29, General Manager Kevin Pritchard announced today.

"Steve continues to experience some shoulder discomfort," said Pritchard.  "We need to go in, clean a few things up and get it stabilized.  He should be good to go in about 6-8 weeks."

The injury originally occurred when Blake separated his right shoulder trying to fight through a screen in the second quarter of Portland 's game at Philadelphia on January 14.  The injury sidelined Blake for five games.  He returned to action on January 26 at the Los Angeles Clippers and re-aggravated the injury in the second quarter, forcing him to miss an additional eight games.

The surgery will be performed by Dr. Neal S. ElAttrache at the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic in Los Angeles.

Maybe this is why he was having so much trouble in the playoffs?

Maybe not. I dunno. I’m just throwing it out there.

Of all the things that can be expressed in the printed word – love, hate, fear, joy – true humor is the one that is the most difficult of all. Sarcasm, for example, is an art of delicate subtlety. Yet too many people wield it as a bulldozer – loud, smelly, ugly, and destructive – and think they are being funny.

And trade Bayless and Sergio

And get Conley or Sessions!

Gives us a starter the same age as the rets of our starters with a “veteran” backup in Blake! Boo yah!

by Zaig on May 28, 2009 1:10 PM PDT up reply actions

Sounds good

We only need to blackmail Wallace first somehow.

Sessions is out to get paid, I suspect, and the Blazers are saving their money for someone who brings more to the table.

by baduk on May 28, 2009 1:19 PM PDT up reply actions

Pfft

Anybody who pays Sessions more than 5-6 million is insane.

by Zaig on May 28, 2009 1:45 PM PDT up reply actions

Two unprovens.

Both had iffy years on bad teams. Sessions scored 44 in a game last year. You know who else scored a bunch of points one time (45) and got paid for it? Darius Miles.

All the best to Steve, we need you buddy!.

That's why we keep Steve

If Sessions/Conley don’t turn out to be starter caliber we’d still have
Steve/Session or Steve/Conley. That is STILL a lot better than what we had this year.

by Zaig on May 28, 2009 1:45 PM PDT up reply actions

that's the first thing I thought of

This increases the likelihood that we keep Steve as the backup if we trade for a new starting PG. I see this as potentially bad news for Bayless.

by jksnake99 on May 28, 2009 1:23 PM PDT up reply actions

Or good news for Bayless

If it means he gets traded to a team that he gets to play for.

by Zaig on May 28, 2009 1:46 PM PDT up reply actions

Agreed

Steve’s rehab stretches through the draft and FA period.

This news should put to bed the “Blake (etc) for Hinrich (etc)” speculation

Bad news for Bayless re: lack of PT is still good news for Blazer fans. You want 3 PGs in case Blake (or whovever the new #1 PG is) goes down with an injury for a stretch of games

by two4larue on May 28, 2009 1:49 PM PDT up reply actions

Awful thing to say...

But if we got a new PG and moved Blake to the bench, I’d rather just trade Bayless and draft a 3rd string PG so that I wouldn’t have to hear people saying “we’d have won if Bayless would have played” every time we lose a game.

by Zaig on May 28, 2009 1:51 PM PDT up reply actions

instead

now you’ll hear “we’d have won if (2009 1st round draft pick) would have played” every time the Blazers lose in ‘09-’10

by pdxlifer on May 28, 2009 3:53 PM PDT up reply actions

Heh possible...

But I dunno, Bayless seems to be getting more hype than any of our previous PGs got. And even when people were hyping Telfair and Sergio, they weren’t outright blaming losses on those guys not getting enough playing time. This year we saw people complaining about too little Bayless after every loss in which he lacked “energy.” I also can’t go to the casino in a Rudy jersey anymore because it makes anyone I sit with say “Sergio sucks, we’d have won last night with Bayless.”

Besides, we don’t have any good picks so I doubt we will expect crap from this year’s rookies.

by Zaig on May 28, 2009 4:07 PM PDT up reply actions

possibly

because his talent was top 3 to 5 in that draft, and he fell to us.

Acquire Reggie Evans as a good enforcer (and he would have been a good hockey goon)

New Blazers policy: Every player gets x-rayed, CTed, MRIed, and scoped at the beginning of each offseason, with a special focus on veterans and players that experienced injuries or extensive pain/discomfort during the season. This way there are no more late surprises, and everybody is fixed up for training camp.

In this regard I like that they are doing it early this time with Steve and not putting it off any longer (a la Roy and Frye last summer).

by Norsktroll on May 28, 2009 1:23 PM PDT reply actions

agreed....

I think some of that was Roy’s fault last year. The guy wants to be tough and I dig that but you have to disclose everything to the medical staff. Although maybe he did I am not exactly in the know.

i a long time ago said something about evans, but also wondered

if maybe nate, having coached him in seattle, knew his limitations (and by this i don’t mean just his game but his coachability).

back to blake: i haven’t been the site much recently, im busy doing other things, but has anyone else been noticing orlando’s success using dwight howard + 3pt shooters? that’s pretty close to what portland could soon perhaps replicate with greg oden + rudy, brandon, blake and ??? (outlaw martell or batum?) with lamarcus aldridge both inside and out.

maybe this has been beaten to death. i’m really occupied and unable to hang around to check.,

how much does this hurt our chances of getting Hinrich or someone comprable in people's opinions?

Does this squash the possibility? Was there a possibility in the first place? Will Bayless be traded now?

by jksnake99 on May 28, 2009 1:55 PM PDT reply actions

wouldn’t teams be trading for Blake’s nonguaranteed deal more than his talent?

Fearthesword.com: "There is no doubt that the long layoff, combined with the ease of the first two rounds had the Cavaliers a bit tired in the 4th quarter."

both his talent and contract are assets. depends on the team and their personnel.

by Ben Golliver on May 28, 2009 2:12 PM PDT up reply actions

Chicago would have been as a cheap replacement for Hinrich

The owner doesn’t want to pay luxury tax, but the income situation is good which is not the case on all teams. On a team that is even more penny-pinching it could have been for his unguaranteed contract, though there are likely more attractive deals for that purpose (e.g. Stackhouse).

by Norsktroll on May 28, 2009 2:14 PM PDT up reply actions

bummer

Do you think KP will still target a PG? If so, who? and which players will he part with?

by jksnake99 on May 28, 2009 2:03 PM PDT up reply actions

kp’s in a tough spot. he now has two point guards with very, very limited trade value. unfortunately for us, both players provide reasonable production for their price so kp has even more of an incentive to hang on to them.

well, we can still hope Greg Oden becomes Dwight Howard

If that happens, I think we’re a title contender with Steve as our starting PG. Its a longshot, but not impossible I guess.

by jksnake99 on May 28, 2009 2:20 PM PDT up reply actions

if you’re looking for another hope, hope that bayless has an amazing summer (which he will, that’s what he does best) and then takes the PG reins in training camp.

bayless absolutely would be a top 4 pick if he was in this year’s draft. so that’s something.

by Ben Golliver on May 28, 2009 2:22 PM PDT up reply actions

Agreed

Check out this article: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/scott_howard-cooper/05/28/westbrook.draft/index.html

Basically, the authors main point is that college 2s with the potential to be converted to the 1 in the NBA (a la Westbrook) are a hot commodity this year. I still say with PT, Bayless would have matched Westbrook’s offensive production, and I take Bayless any day over Jrue Holliday (Tyreke Evans has the potential to be elite, imo, so that’s a closer call). Regardless, we need to see what Bayless can do with consistent minutes before I’d feel comfortable saying the PG of the future is not on the curent roster.

I believe in Greg Oden. To all the haters - get down with the program or stay off the wagon for all time. #52

by blazeraddict on May 28, 2009 8:29 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree.

He has such bankable skills in the NBA. If he made all his points off sooting jumpers I would be disappointed, but he drove to the rim like a champ and finished with contact. That is easily repeatable. Once he learns how to drive and kick effectively he will be incredibly effective, especially when he’s surrounded by shooters.

Here’s a question, has someone with Jerryd’s skill set ever been a bust? The potential and desire to be a lock down defender, incredible ability to draw fouls, good form on his jumper, great work ethic.

Guys like that are rare.

Roy is the best player in the world with the exception of Incarcerated Mike from Queensbridge .

If a team requests access to the medical records and is convinced he will be completely healthy again it doesn't change anything

A physical can be waived, or limited to what they want to see. I didn’t think it was terribly likely that the Blazers would trade him anyway but keep him as a backup even though that demotion might not sit perfectly well with him. Trading him for Hinrich is the most likely case, in pretty much all others he would not be the centerpiece (acquiring Miller in free agency, Conley, Sessions). Oh well, maybe something still happens. Otherwise his contract runs out next year and they have the possibility to trade him at the deadline or decide then if they want to keep Steve as a backup on a similar deal.

by Norsktroll on May 28, 2009 2:04 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree with Norsktroll

I am glad they are doing this right away and not after waiting too long for him to be ready to go for training camp.

If anything

This pretty much guarantees an upgrade at PG. There is the possibility that a team takes Blake in a trade just to void his contract to save salary cap. Same thing could happen with Travis. They are both on team options this year. Both of Blake’s and Martell’s injuries are of the nature of becoming chronic. We are 9 months out on Martell and he can still only do pool work! Shoulders are also tricky, I doubt that KP will BANK on Both of them being ready to go.
Think 9 million in cap space and two contracts that can be ended by the team that total another 9 million will get left on the table in this firesale market?
     I wouldn’t bet on it.
