Jerryd Bayless vs. Jarrett Jack

So does anyone miss Jarrett Jack?  I always liked that guy a lot, I liked his toughness…  I like to imagine pairing him on the court with Joel Pryzbilla to give the attitude that I would love to see from the bench of the Trail Blazers.  And I said BENCH, but… what if Jarrett Jack were the PG to get away?  I doubt it. Regardless, Jarrett Jack flat out won the starting PG duties in Indiana midway through this past season, beating out TJ Ford hands down in both play and team leadership.  Jarrett had good stats 13.1 points per game, 4.1 assists, 5.6 rebounds per game, shot 45%FG, 35%3’s, had 1+ steals per game, a Hollinger PER of 13.10 (not as good as Steve Blake at 14.49, Blake turns the ball over way less).  Jarrett Jack has incredible leadership skills, even if some Blazer fans didn’t believe in Jack’s intangibles, that well chronicled position battle between Jarrett Jack and TJ Ford was won by Jack.  Jarrett was the best option for the Pacers to play consistently and win games, because of the respect that his team mates have for him and Jack’s willingness to trust his consistent effort to come through for him he did an admirable job helping the Pacers to within 1 spot out of the Eastern Conference Playoffs.  Indiana finished 36 – 46, Three wins shy of the playoffs.

So why all this chatter about Jarrett Jack?  Simply, I started to realize that Jerryd Bayless was reminding me of Jarrett Jack.  The ability to get to the rim, albeit Bayless has much more flare here than Jack.  The reputation of a training fiend and hoops-a-holic mentality, though many fans and media types might be thinking this type of “news” is an attempt to create a feel-good story or something, but intangibles are very important to teams as Jack proved this season in Indiana.  Jack was Portland’s off-season “Captain”, was a leader in the weight room, conditioning and keeping enthusiastic about training; that is whole-heartedly what I believe Jerryd Bayless needs to be if he even wants a SNIFF at the starting point guard role.  Jay Bay should fly out to live with Oden in Ohio and get that dude in the gym two times per day.  That is the kind of leadership the next point guard of the Blazers should be.  So is Jerryd Bayless going to be better than Jarrett Jack by the time he is 4 years into the league?

Here is what ESPN’s Hollinger wrote about Jerryd Bayless, age 20, 1 year exp.:

http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/players/hollinger?playerId=3417

2008-09 outlook: Portland picked up the shoot-first point guard in a draft-day trade with Indiana, and it looks like he might play fairly substantial minutes immediately. Bayless only played one season at Arizona, but his college stats were impressive, and at 6-foot-3 he has enough size to move up to the 2 when Portland wants to play small. Bayless shot 40.7 percent on 3s and 83.9 percent from the line in his one college season, so once he adapts to the pro 3-point line he should be a force from long range. But his instincts are as a driver off the dribble, and he has a good first step to the basket.

Here is what ESPN’s Hollinger wrote about Jarrett Jack, age 25, 4 years exp.:

http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/players/hollinger?playerId=2768

Scouting report: A strong pick-and-roll driver who has excellent size and strength for a point guard, Jack is comfortable going to the rim and absorbing contact. He's also become a passable outside shooter, so opponents can't just go under the screen and lay in wait.

Additionally, Jack's size and strength make him an excellent rebounder and defender for a point guard ... except that he's not a point guard. Jack is turnover-prone, has a shoot-first mentality, doesn't push the ball in transition and doesn't see the floor well, so he's really more of a combo guard or even a pure shooting guard. Though he's an inch short for that spot he can defend the position because he's quick and strong, and it may end up being his best spot long-term.

2008-09 outlook: Jack was traded in the offseason to Indiana, where he'll either be in a combo guard role or a pure shooting guard slot coming off the bench -- something he's better suited for than the point. The Pacers need players who can get to the basket, so he fills a need there as well. All told, it's a helpful move for him, not to mention a timely one -- he'll be restricted free agent after the season if the Pacers don't extend him by opening day.

I dunno?  Personally I believe that Jerryd Bayless has more upside than where Jarrett Jack is right now. I feel that a lot of people around here need to be reminded of what type of prospect Jerryd Bayless was when Portland landed him.  KP’s work to get a player that was slated to be a #3 to #6 pick who slid and Portland was able to maneuver for him… and it cost us Jarrett Jack to do it.  Here is a draft bio from collegehoopsnet.com: http://www.collegehoopsnet.com/story/jerryd_bayless_nba_draft_profile41877

Jerryd Bayless

 Outlook: Consistent NBA Starter

College: Arizona

Class: Freshman

Position: PG

Height: 6’3”

Weight: 193lbs

Accolades:  Gatorade Player of the Year – Arizona – high school (06 & 07), First Team All-Arizona – high school (04, 05, 06, 07), McDonald’s All-American – high school (07), First Team Parade All-American – high school (07), USA U-18 Team (06).

Scouting Report:  A lightning quick scoring point guard.

Strengths:  Blow-by quickness – leaves defenders in the dust.  Great slasher – gets to the hoop and finishes.  Great at drawing fouls and a superb free throw shooter.  Solid, quick defender.  An explosive scorer – had three straight 30-plus point games in Pac-10 competition this year.  Three-point range on his jumper.  Versatile – can play both guard spots.  Can elevate and hit his jumper over defenders.  Can be unstoppable off the dribble – very good at getting by and/or eluding defenders.  Decent assist man.  Shoots for a high percentage for a guard.

Weaknesses:  Inexperienced – only one year of college.  Is not really a true point guard – more of a combo guard.  More of a scorer than a passer.  Turns the ball over too much.  Will need time to learn to run an NBA offense and learn the pro point guard game.  A little undersized for the NBA if he plays shooting guard.

Projected 2008 Draft Range:  Between number three and number six overall.

Consensus:  Bayless’ draft stock has exploded as the season has gone on and he continues to pile the points on the board.  His offensive skills are NBA ready, but in order to really excel he will have to become more of a point guard or risk becoming a dreaded “tweener”.

So what do we all think about how this “transaction” by KP has worked so far.  The weakest part of the Blazers in the playoffs was perimeter defense, which is one spot that Jarrett Jack was more than solid on… not to mention 6’6” Kareem Rush who was also part of that trade is very athletic perimeter defender as well.  Maybe Portland would have been better this year in playoffs with Jack and Rush?

I am still excited about Bayless because of his athleticism which is better than either Jack or Rush.  I also believe that Bayless’s competitiveness is going to make a very solid on-ball perimeter defender, JBay has got too much pride to get beat all night long!  I also believe that this season’s “The Coach Nate Experience” didn’t give Bayless much opportunity to get his shot rolling.  Bayless will be at least a 40% 3-point shooter, and 45+% FG shooter, not to mention his ability to get to the free-line AND, more importantly, draw those costly fouls on opponents post players.  I agree with collegehoopsnet.com’s draft bio rating Bayless’s prospect level to being a “consistent NBA starter”.   Since he is on Portland, Bayless has the potential to become a Consistent NBA starter on a Championship Team.

My Bottom Line:  Jerryd Bayless was hyped to have been this great move by KP, but Nate McMillan is going to have to give Jerryd Bayless faith and consistent minutes if Bayless is to have any chance at working out on this roster.  Portland has a strong cast of players to be play surrounding Jerryd, if Jerryd is to ever be the pg in Portland, Nate will need to play Jerryd consistently next to Brandon Roy so they can work together and get to know eachother’s game nightly.  Even though I am lobbying for Nate to simply hand the keys over to Bayless as the starting PG for half a season no ifs ands or buts, I still unconditionally believe Jerryd Bayless needs to be filling that “off-season” captain void that left when Jarrett Jack was traded.  If Bayless establishes himself as a leader THIS offseason, he undoubtedly deserves the starting gig day 1 through all-star break next season.

Another question to discuss here... Would trading Bayless now make KP look bad?

Last season’s Draft magic hype was all about getting Bayless and much less about grabbing Nic Batum. But if Bayless is traded this off-season without really even getting a shot to play PG here, could that be chaulked up to KP’s first tranasctional error>

KP has already made several transactions that have not worked

He drafted Sergio, McRoberts, Koponen (too early to give up but Italian League numbers are hideous), Green, etc. Who cares if he would look bad? Bayless should be traded if and when we have a chance to include him in a deal that improves our team.

by jksnake99 on May 26, 2009 3:10 PM PDT up reply actions

Sergio wasn't a bad move

He was at least the 26th best player in that draft, and I’d argue better than that. Were there better players to be had? There almost always is, but it wasn’t a bad pick.

by as11osu on May 26, 2009 3:38 PM PDT up reply actions

fair enough

The mistake was not realizing that he didn’t mesh well with Nate and trading him following his rookie year, when he had more value.

by jksnake99 on May 26, 2009 4:11 PM PDT up reply actions

At some point doesn't the some of this stuff fall on Nate?

If he’s incapable of getting the most out of his players, isn’t that a coaching issue and not a GM issue? I think like it did with Jack, it might take KP getting rid of Nate’s security blanket (Blake) for this team to reach its potential.

by as11osu on May 26, 2009 4:22 PM PDT up reply actions

Nate does deserve some criticism for poor PG development

but neither Jack nor Sergio is nearly talented enough (in my opinion) to justify asking Nate to change his system for their benefit.

by jksnake99 on May 26, 2009 4:24 PM PDT up reply actions

Nate's inability to switch things up

transcends positions and situations. He’s been inept when even the slightest bit out of his comfort zone. In the playoffs that simply can’t be the case because other coaches will throw everything they can at him. Not being able to properly use point guards is a basic and significant flaw.

54 wins

with 3 rookies in the heavy rotation.

Exactly what adjustments do you want Nate to make?

Put Sergio in more? HAH!
Bayless? green
Frye/Shav/Ruffin? no
Batum more Outlaw less? well, they bring different things to the table.
More Greg? Fouls.

Look man, Martell Webster wasn’t limping through that door. Channing Frye and Sergio Rodriguez were both trying to dash through the door at the same time, to comedic and predictable results.

We did pretty darn good against Houston for a team of our inexperience. You don’t make changes to your rotation willynilly, that can kill a players confidence and make the situation even worse.

Looking back

at the draft picks…I never would have guessed that this team plays at the slowest or among the slowest offensive paces in the league. With our athleticism from the first player to the last player in the rotation, I’m surprised we aren’t more towards the middle of the pack or the top end in terms of pace. LMA is incredibly fast, Batum, Trout, and Martell all seem destined to do well on the break. Sergio was someone who liked to push the pace.

I always assumed for awhile that KP and Nate didn’t see eye to eye on offensive philosophies.

Why trade Bayless?

The guy has had 1 year in the NBA, he had to go through adjusting to a differant style of game, and being the low man on the totem poll in the Blazers PG line up. Now that he has his rookie year done and over with, lets see what he can do, I am in no way ready to throw in the towell on bayless yet and none of you should be either, think positive remember summer league

It seems that everyone's real problem is they just don't drink enough coffee. They lose their edge, lose track of their priorities, and end up sleeping a third of their life away.

Well....

A point guard who, although he had a great showing at Summer League, cannot move out of the 3rd string PG role as a rookie, clearly will never get better.

How one does in one’s rookie season, seldom is indicative of anything.

Also consider Channing Frye. Did quite well as a rookie, has pretty much stunk ever since.

I agree

I just get tired of seeing these comparisons trotted out that make it seem as if every PG who struggles their rookie year turns out to be a great player, when it’s really a 50-50 proposition at best.

It’s obviously to early to make any conclusions about Jerryd, but to say he’s untouchable because we don’t “know yet” is ridiculous. I don’t think the Lakers are regretting trading Crittendon for Gasol, and I don’t think we would either if we have a shot at some young stud PG if it meant moving Bayless.

Trade Bayless

We have enough depth at shooting guard without him, and he’s going to have multiple frustrating years here like Sergio has if the Blazers keep him. Nate just doesn’t develop point guards. He hasn’t developed Blake, Sergio, or Bayless. Sergio is arguably worse than when he got here, though he’s a slightly better shooter and defender, those weren’t the most important areas of his game.

by baduk on May 26, 2009 2:14 PM PDT reply actions

He isn't going to be our shooting guard.

It was his first year, a bit early to say he’s going to have frustrating years ahead of him.

And how can you say shooting and defending aren’t important areas of Sergio’s game? That’s why he doesn’t get much playing time-because he isn’t good in those areas. Those are things that we need from the point guard position. Things that Bayless has shown signs of being able to provide.

Bayless isn't a point guard

I think Blazers management has already figured this out, though it’s still up for debate here.

The draft and free agency will determine whether Bayless sees more minutes as a point guard, and whether he remains a Blazers. My thinking is no and no, but hey, I could be wrong.

As many young PG’s he is cursed with over dribbling in the half court, better fit in an uptempo system(Suns, return him to his home state of Arizona). Needs to learn how defend the pick & roll(again, many young PG’s suffer from this. My main problem:

Just like at Arizona, Jerryd has no clue when to pass & when he needs to score. Its either one or the other, not very good at mixing them at all.

Ok how bout this one
There is a caveat, though, as considering his size, he’d almost certainly be better off guarding point guards than shooting guards

CHECK

which again brings up the fact that he’ll need to be drafted by the right team (with the right guard next to him) to really reach his full potential. He won’t be a perfect fit for everyone, but if he finds the right situation, Bayless has 20 point per game plus potential in the NBA if he continues to progress.

I think his floor, is Derek Fisher. With a ceiling, somewhere around Chauncey Billups.

I just think his development would be infinitely quicker if he was playing in a fast paced offense, with a point forward or a SG who takes the ball up. Somewhere where he does not have to worry about distribution.

It was a good deal. Short term in favor of Indiana, long term in favor of the Blazers.

Bayless is not a SG, he is a point guard who will score a lot a la Tony Parker and Gilbert Arenas. And even if he doesn’t develop the court vision and rather tends towards the 2 spot, I don’t hear that many Bulls fans eager to trade away Ben Gordon and Warriors fans eager to trade away Monta Ellis and Grizzlies fans eager to trade away O.J. Mayo and TTTSNBN fans eager to trade away Westbrook. None of which is and ever will be a pure point guard. The role definition is changing.

Bulls, Warriors, Grizzlies, and Thunder fans

also don’t have one of the top 6-7 players in the league starting at shooting guard with another stud behind him, and no Bulls fan would ever want to rely on Gordon starting at the point, and the Warriors are still desperately looking for a PG, if reports are to be believed (between Baron and the draft). The latter two examples are both rookies, so hard to make any conclusions based on them (especially when Mayo spent the year at the two).

The role definition may be changing, but there haven’t been many guys who start out as these undersized SGs who make a smooth transition to playing point on a successful team. Monta and Gordon have tried it, with not much success, Jason Terry has gone the other way (going from being a PG to an SG), and Nate Rob hasn’t exactly been a revelation at anything but playing SG.

I think Bayless has a solid chance at becoming a good PG, Gilbert Arenas being the best example of a guy who made it work, but if those 4 guys are the ones we have to trot out as “success” stories, I’m not super optimistic.

by Royster on May 26, 2009 5:11 PM PDT up reply actions

Nellie is saying Monta is their point guard of the future. He even said it while Baron was still on the team.

Fire Nellie, or Monta is going to run the point for them. And I believe Bayless has more point guard and defensive skills than Monta, who is the better mid-range shooter and has developed his scoring instincts already.

And look how great that team is doing now!

You just listed 3 terrible teams and 1 mediocre team. What they do and what their fans think doesn’t seem like it should hold much weight.

Also, the fans like those guys because they are fun to watch… this doesn’t mean that they win games.

If Bayless will turn out to be “fun to watch” but not win the Blazers many games, he will still have more trade value than he has now. Too soon to tell how Bayless will develop. And the Blazers will wait to see how it turns out.

Gilbert Arenas is a pretty good comparison...

I think Bayless could ultimately be a good fit next to Brandon Roy. If Bayless is gonna provide a little better stats than JJacks 13ppg, 4apg, 5rpg… and with somewhat better shooting percentage and lower turnovers. I doubt that Bayless will really put up the scoring that Arena’s has had, but I definitely could see Mo Williams numbers out of Bayless.

This may be blasphemy around these parts, but isn’t if possible that winning 54 games this year with Blake as the starting point guard and Sergio mostly backing him up, actually set us back at least a year?

This is, of course, assumes that Bayless does eventually become the starting point guard. It will be even harder now for Nate to start Bayless and live through his growing pains and mistakes, and risk not topping last year’s win total and playoff appearance.

Oden was given plenty of slack regarding turnovers and fouls, but Bayless wasn’t. Might this be because Nate was a guard, and thus judges that position more harshly than he does the big man?

To extend that notion further—does Nate have the disposition (especially now that expectations are raised), to let ANY rookie point guard succeed here, or will he always keep a short leash on him, thereby retarding our young poing guards’ abilities to grow and develop? (Let’s face it, not all young guys are going to be like ‘The Natural’—many will need much more time and development before they can reach their potential.)

Obviously, the Jerryd vs. Jarrett question won’t truly be answered for a few years yet, but I believe Jerryd will be a great player one day. The potential is certainly there. It’s a question of whether he can realize that potential, and whether Nate will allow him to.

Sorry for the grammatical blunders above.

Blasphemy!!!!!!

You could have a good point if Bayless does become a decent ie better than Blake point guard but not necessarily even in that case. Bayless could be good in a few years without necessarily being anywhere near ready or deserving of playing time this year.

Here’s the key question whenever Nate is blamed for not playing a pet player or retarding a players development. Since when in **** HAS POTENTIAL EVER EARNED PLAYING TIME OVER PLAYERS THAT ARE ALREADY BETTER AND ALSO STILL DEVELOPING? Only when Portland went to a ‘youth movement’ and had already decided to move the more developed veterans did players play soley based on potential of the future. Thank god that is not still the case. Players earn playing time by being better then the competitors at the same position. This is their incentive to improve. This is the sense of fairness that all players, rookies and not rookies need to perceive from their team.

Oden is expected to be keystone of a championship caliber team. Bayless is not. Even with the Oden’s flaws as you mentiond his PER for starting centers was above average, and he only averaged about 18 minutes per game. Bayless’s PER was not even average for a backup player. It’s simple. Bayless has no point guard skills, did not play well, could not beat out Blake or Sergio and therefore did not earn or deserve playing time. It has nothing to do with Nate hating rookie point guards. And there is no reason that Nate has to play the worst performing point guard on the team to give them a chance to develop.

Bayless will get a chance to run a team from the pg position this Summer. They won’t want him to score. The know he can do that. They’ll want to see him; run the team, set up plays and players, his court vision.

Hmmm...

Not sure where I said Bayless was the future of the franchise, he was simply the example I was using to illustrate a possible problem with the team’s development from this point forward.

Personally, I think Nate is a good coach, and obviously what he’s done with this young team is amazing.

My point was, does continuing to start Blake at the point in the short term slow the team’s development for the future? I will infer from your response, that your answer to the question would be an unqualified “No”.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
