Trade & FA Drawer - Pass the Turkey-Glue
So how about that Hidayet Turkoglu guy? right? As most of us know, he has an early termination option this coming off-season (or would make 7,354,500), and it feels entirely certain that (unlike most guys with ETO) he could opt out and get a lot more money.
Or can he? Who is going to pay him this money? Can the Magic keep him for less than a max contract after giving the same thing to Rashard?
So what is it worth to do to get this guy? Nothing, everything, a particular minimum amount (i have a hard time wanting to give anyone more than 12mil guaranteed for 3 years)... we are going to be limited by our cap space for outright free agency, but I imagine that the magic would want to get something back even if they know that they cannot keep this guy (or can they? it would seem that howard, lewis, nelson, and turkoglu all demand some dough)
or is Hidayet just too darn ugly for you to want him to be a Blazer? or do you even have some legit basketball reason (slow, lacking defense, we don't need another small forward tweener, etc) other than money as to why you don't want Hedo?
Or would you like to talk about someone else? Lindsay Hunter, Tyronn Lue, and Brevin Knight will all be unrestricted free agents, that's something exciting to talk about.

id want him
He isnt that great at defending but he is clutch and can hit 3. Movie Batum to the bench and starting him would make us better. I wish.. But i dont think he would come here as his first choice.

I feel the need to fufill Tom's duty
of suggesting a trade to get rid of Batum. My ideal trade would be Batum, Sergio, and a second round pick for Kwame Brown. Sure you don’t trade big for small but come on. Kwame Freakin Brown.
That way we can have two number one draft pick busts.

Trade Sergio and Bayless and Blake
Along with Martell and Outlaw and Batum
And Rudy
And Joel
Then we have nothing to argue about anymore. Life is good.

Hedo
just turned 30, and you can already tell he’s going to be one of those players that falls off the cliff. His points assists and rebounds all went downt his year. Also, his FG%, 3P% and FT% all went down which killed his value as a high efficiency scorer. His ability to control the ball is nice, but its a lot easier and cheaper to find in a point guard. Also, because Hedo isn’t going to age gracefully, pretty soon the only position left for him to play defensively will be that of power forward, and he’s already pretty close to inept there as it is. Without Howard sitting back playing safety, his defensive problems would be even more magnified. Just because we think we have the next Howard doesn’t make it so, and won’t for some time. By that time I’d bet Hedo is washed up.
At the beginning of this year I thought he’d be an easy pick up for us, as he’d just come off of a career season, but as Hollinger predicted, he came crashing down to earth.

that he will get a big contract just based on postseason play?

I think he'll be the test case
for how NBA teams have changed their outlook on financial responsibility. If he gets 4 years 50 million dollars, things haven’t changed. If he gets 20-30 million dollars for that same time period, PA’s money bags have even more value than we thought they did.

Regarding your poll
I think it’s two things, some folks don’t know about this trade post and some don’t read any of the other posts before they post theirs. Probably a few others just don’t care or they think their idea is so earth shattering that they don’t want to have it buried in another post.

My Memphis Notes
Memphis is becoming my second team. Here are my notes:
Ricky Rubio: Obviously, the headliner is the Grizz landed the 2nd pick in the draft. Putting them in prime position for the uber talented & young Spanish PG, Ricky Rubio. Olympic team mate of Marc & Pau Gasol, as well as Rudy Fernandez. Has a knack for always making the right play. Insanely high basketball IQ for his age, I think I speak for most Memphis fans in saying the draft will be a disappointment if you don’t land him.

Chris “The Birdman” Anderson. If I was Chris Wallace, I would be extremely interested in acquiring Andersen. He is a literally one of the best weak side defenders of the last decade. He has phenomenal leaping ability & finishes at the rim with authority. Would be a perfect option for Alley Oops from Ricky Rubio. He is an unselfish player, he has a great story & I think he would be a perfect compliment to Gasol’s offensive game.

Hedo Turkoglu: Getting some great playoff experience in Orlando, will be looking for his last big contract. Better defender then Gay(not saying much), excellent passer(Great at throwing lobs), high basketball IQ. Can play the Point Forward very well, great dribbling skills for someone 6’10". Good 3pt shooter(.356%)

Pau Gasol: … Oof, eh Memphis fans? He is looking great in LA. I wonder what it would take to bring him back to Memphis? If you signed Turkoglu, Gay could become trade bait. You could also send Milicic to LA, they would love his expiring contract & in the mean time puts a big body on the floor, in practice against Bynum. A frontcourt of Gasol/Gasol/Andersen is championship level.

Rudy Fernandez: All time NBA leader in 3’s for a rookie. Moves so well off the ball(Good compliment to the dominant ball handlers already on the team), reminds me a lot of Manu Ginobli. Freakish ability to catch & finish alley oops(Rubio weapon) Would require a good deal on Portland’s end to pry him away though(Conley, perhaps some other assets). What would this move do to Mayo? I am willing to bet you guys could get some very nice offers around the league for him. If you can’t get Rudy from the Blazers, signing Ginobli in 2010 would be a very smart move imo.
Trevor Ariza: Free agent after this year, has played excellent in the playoffs. Not a dominant ball handler(Again, good compliment to your dominant ball handlers), Great defender, very young & his 3Pt shot is looking better, and better(.510% in the playoffs). Very unselfish. Could start at the 3 after Turkoglu is gone? At any moment he can turn put someone on a poster.

Ronny Turiaf: Exceptional low post defender & a good rebounder. Like Andersen, a good fit next to Marc Gasol. Doesn’t hurt that he knows spanish & can converse with Rubio or Gasol in their native tongue.

Jerryd Bayless: His scoring & physical brand of ball, in my eyes is a perfect compliment to Rubio’s distribution & finesse game. Would not have to worry about distributing if he is behind Rubio, allowing him to do what he does best, score. Big upside.

Paul Harris: Draft prospect from Syracuse. Lock down defender & a excellent rebounder. He would play behind Mayo, I think it would push OJ to become a better defender/rebounder through competition, which would be a huge positive. Finishes at the rim with either hand & has a very strong frame. Worth a 2nd round pick.

Victor Claver. What else to say but: Huge upside. Needs to bulk & have someone show him how to play great defense, has all the physical skills. Finishes around the rim well & shoots the 3pt at a nice rate. More spanish connection action(Rubio OOOOP). Could take over once Turkoglo is gone at the 3, in fact they are a lot alike & Claver would really benefit from having Hedo to learn from.
I hope you enjoyed & I will be sure to continue to add to it.

meh
Doing drugs and then getting better makes you a great story, but not doing drugs your whole life makes you a nobody. Got it.
Seriously, we have former drug addicts go tell kids not to do drugs.
We have teenage mothers telling kids not to have sex.
Why don’t we get former murderers to go to schools and tell kids that murder is bad?

Terrible Post
“Makes you a nobody?”
Honestly? Who said that? No one. You are assuming it. It is fantastic that some people can avoid them their entire life, some cannot. In today’s stress riddled society some turn to drugs. It is a very promising thing to see something as public as an athlete be able to kick the habit.
Drug addicts hurt themselves. Teenage mothers hurt themselves. They can recover, whether it be rehabilitation on the part of the addict, or being one of the few teenage mothers who can actually do a good job of raising a kid the right way & provide a good home.
Murderers? They kill other people, not themselves. There is a huge difference, you might want to use some discretion on such a careless post.

None of what you say changes the point
That you say he has a “great story” because he kicked a drug habit. I don’t see you mention anyone else having a “great story” even though they never gave into drugs in the first place. That makes them unimportant apparently.
Do I want my kids to model a guy who got kicked from the league, did massive drugs, and then got better. Or do I want my kids to model a guy who never did drugs and then joined the NBA. I wonder?
And if you don’t like my examples, I can give you more.
Pedophiles have given speeches to parents on how to notice sex offenders around their kids. pedophiles hurt other people. If pedophiles get to show remorse and try to help other people, we really should let everyone.
This is getting off topic, so this’ll be my last response (although I will read anything else you have to say), but it really gets old to me when someone who screws their life up and recovers is a “great story” but a guy like Webster is just another guy.
by Zaig on May 26, 2009 1:01 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Don't confuse a good thing with a great story.
It is great that people live a good life. I wish more people did. But try selling that as a story. “People are good, nothing happens.” It doesn’t make for a good plot. Stories are far more interesting when the main character has to overcome horrendous obstacles in order to succeed, whether those obstacles are external or internal. Lord of the Rings is a great story, but dang if that Frodo guy doesn’t keep getting himself into trouble by putting on that ring! But that is far more interesting than all those other hobbits who just stayed quietly in the Shire, doing the same ol’ thing every day. Did they suffer less? Sure. Were they happier? You bet. Would they be interesting to read about? Not a chance.
Is it fair that people who live good lives get no credit? Probably not. But it is a boring story. Great stories come when people overcome the toughest of difficulties.
Of all the things that can be expressed in the printed word – love, hate, fear, joy – true humor is the one that is the most difficult of all. Sarcasm, for example, is an art of delicate subtlety. Yet too many people wield it as a bulldozer – loud, smelly, ugly, and destructive – and think they are being funny.

Ugh, I'm going to break my rule here
Overcoming obstacles is one thing. Overcoming obstacles that YOU CREATE is another issue entirely.
Birdman created his own drug problem. Yes, he had a tougher life than most people growing up, but he still created his own drug problem.
Frodo is closer to this that most heroes in movies. Usually the hero is overcoming a bad guy type obstacle, where Frodo is trying to overcome the power of the ring, which in itself could be considered a super powerful drug. The difference is that Frodo had to use the ring to save his own life at one point and was also trying to destroy that ring to save the entire world.
Birdman’s story could have been a good one, ripe with overcoming challenges that were thrown his way (parents etc.), but instead he decided to develop a drug problem. Thus, his story becomes crap in my eyes.
Telfair did the same thing. He didn’t have the easiest upbringing and he looked like a good story when he worked his way into the NBA, but then he decides to get in trouble with a gun not once, but twice. Another guy who doomed himself and turned into a stereotype.
Maybe I just prefer great stories where the good guy overcomes adversity from the outside, as opposed to the good guy who tries pisses his life away for a time before making a comeback.
I say props to Birdman for getting clean and getting his life back in order, but I’m sure not going to consider him a success story over all of the people out there who had the same trouble childhood and decided never to get into the problems that Birdman did.

"I say props to Birdman for getting clean and getting his life back in order"
That is all I am saying. A lot of drug problems come from the wrong group of friends, maybe if the jocks took him in instead of shunning him in HS, he would never have touched the drugs? Who is to say.

Would Memphis do either of these deals?
Trade #1 – Travis Outlaw, #24 pick, Steve Blake(or Jerryd Bayless) and Joel Pryzbilla for Marko Jaric, Darko Millicic and the #2 pick…

We are giving up
Outlaw
Blake
Przybilla
A pick
for Rubio and 2 awful contracts. We also now have a rooke PG and a second year PG who had an awful rookie year. If you swap Blake for Bayless is gets a little less awful and I might consider it, but you’re still losing quite a bit for 1 player and some crappy contracts.
by Zaig on May 26, 2009 1:02 PM PDT up reply actions 1 recs
My one hesitation...
Is giving up Joel. Darko is a serviceable backup, but both him and Oden have proven to be (at least slightly) injury prone and Darko doesn’t rebound with nearly the same efficiency.
As for giving up Outlaw and Blake and “a pick”, I think you’d have to consider it. Rubio shoots from the perimeter, plays defense, has a connection with Rudy. He would also look to push the tempo, etc… He gets “thrown into the fire” as a Rookie (like Tony Parker) and then voila-We’ve got a real point guard of the future.
Theoretically, that scenario lends itself to…
Trade #1 – Travis Outlaw, #24 pick, Jerryd Bayless and Joel Pryzbilla for Marko Jaric, Darko Millicic and the #2 pick…
Trade #2 – Sergio and a signed-and-traded Channing Frye (at $4 mil/year) for Udonis Haslem (or a signed-and-traded Antonio McDyess)
Sign Free Agent – Mike Bibby or Andre Miller to a 2 year $6 million deal (decided based on who will actually take that contract)…

1-Absolutley not
I don’t mind trading Travis or #24. I have small reservations about Blake, because I can see him as a great back-up PG. Przybilla can help us next year, if Greg gets hurt (please not again) or has foul trouble (please not again).
Beside that, Jaric’s contract is insanely bad, and has years left. Darko can’t play, but is a $7M expiring contract. Again, no basketball value. I like Rubio, but not this deal including Przy.
2 – I’d do in a heartbeat. I imagine that MEM would want a pick or two in order to do the deal.

I would love Turk
it would open the offense up so much. Bayless could play his true scoring-PG position and Turk can play point-Forward. I always have siad this team would be awesome with a point-forward. Not only that but you can throw out crazy line-ups like: Batum, Roy, Rudy, Turk, and Oden. It would just add so much to the flexibility. I hope Batum can develope a offensive game of the same kind.
