In the blog post from NY provided by soci...
…Knicks fans who want Sergio claim to “have seen him play in the Olympics last year” and that he did a “great job in the Olympics”. Oops.

Uh...what Senor Mort means is...
…he is a tremendous talent that has been unable to find his place on the Blazer’s roster. It sure will be tough watching him turn into an all-star for whichever team trades for him but I will be happy knowing it just wouldn’t have happened here in Portland.
(Do you think they bought it?)

It’s pretty established that I don’t see a star future for Sergio, but I would take him any day of the week over Raul Lopez and twice on game days.

Maybe
Not so sure about Llull.
Rubio will be our starting PG, the question is who’ s gonna come along with him, and the 2 choosen ones will be among Sergio, Llull, Raul Lopez and maybe Cabezas.
Scariolo will probably take sergio and Raul, but i’d love to see Llull with spain, he’s the future, Raul may be the present&past, but we need to start creating a team culture within the youngsters; Claver needs to come now that Pau will likely say no, and Saul Blanco too, as Navarro isn’t coming either (btw, Blanco went to my school, he was 1 year ahead of me, and before that I played agaisnt him hehe, americans won’t probably know him, but spaniards do for sure; http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Saul-Blanco-1292/)

I don't REALLY think that way
I’m just being snippy/snarky/sarcastic about ol’ Sergio.
Did Lopez seem that bad though? He just seemed experienced and solid… not gonna have the great plays Sergio can make sometimes, but also a lot more dependable.
Fans love the unexpected, but coaches love knowing what you’re gonna get after all… I saw the pick of Lopez over Sergio as a pick for consistency’s sake. He didn’t seem too bad, though— but I’ve only seen him in the Olympics, not in regular play.
Wasn’t he a Utahian Jazzer at one point in time and space?

He spent a couple seasons there
a promising first and an injured-filled second and he came back to Spain where he doesn’t play more than 2 games a week and his knee can stand it.
He’s still a very good player, and he’s able to contribute in the NBA level as an above average bench PG, but he just doesn’t have the knees to keep it up for 82+ games a year.
Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!

Unless he plays like crap.
Total possibility.

He'll have some cool passes and nice plays
It’ll be all anyone remembers… the positives.
And oooh doggies, what if he outplays Rubio one game? Some GM out there will think he can get a Rubio-type for cheap from the Blazers, and get caught up in the hype and hysteria caused by some nice moments. It’s how GMs get in these international games.
I know it means a lot to Sergio to make the team, so I really do hope he makes it and helps out. When do they announce the rosters for the Spanish national team? Anyone know?

When you put it that way...
Imagine what would happen if a team trades a pretty good asset for Sergio. KP would like a genius once again.

The Euro mystique
Seems to have rubbed off a bit in the last few years. Besides Rubio (and the Omri guy from Israel) there aren’t a lot of international players expected to go in the first round
This is a huge departure from the last 5 years or so, where international players were seen as being more fundamentally sound and NBA-ready than NCAA underclassmen

True 'dat
But Sergio will have the benefit of already being in the NBA for 3 years, so people will think they are getting an experienced guard who has adjusted to the NBA and is still young and capable of a big game (like we hope he’ll pull off in the World Championships or whatever he’s gonna be playing for).
If he wasn’t drafted yet and not on a team, I’d agree more, but since he’s already a backup for a 54 win team, I could see him getting overrated greatly by a good tournament run.
AND THEN, people will lament that we moved him, because look how good he did! He had 8 assists in one quarter against Argentina! He’s the answer at PG!

The roster for the Spanish team
will be announced end of July, according to Scariolo (coach)
Grizzlies GM Chris Wallace: "Unless we find out that Griffin has two heads or something like that in his physical examination, it's a pretty straight-forward decision."

What's the attraction in bashing Sergio?
Everybody who’s watched him the past three years in Portland knows that he has some shortcomings. However, if you are honest you will also have to admit that he’s shown improvement . For example, his defense and shooting were improved from last year, and he was a lot steadier, overall, this year than in the past.
Sergio is still a young guy and he should continue to improve, especially since he does work very hard. Right now, he is a decent backup point guard and it is quite possible that in the future he’ll play a significant role as a regular rotation player or starter on some NBA team.
If you’ve watched Sergio split defenders and get his teammates the ball where and when they can do something with it, you will know that 8 assists in a quarter against Argentina or the US is certainly within his capability. That is nothing to laugh at.
Yes, Sergio has his faults, but so do other Blazers not named Brandon. If you think he should be traded or even waived, fine. But at least be fair in your evaluation of his play. He does some things very well, but you wouldn’t know it to read the negative stuff that’s slung around here.

I dont hate Sergio
But if he had played more minutes than Blake we would have been lucky to win 50 and his agent whining about him not being treated in a"natural manner"to the La Marca morons didnt set well with me.

My complaint is with those
who continually dump on him as if he’s the only Blazer with any faults. You often see a different group of people — although there may be some overlap — ganging up on Travis the same way.
Look, I never said it would’ve been a great idea for Sergio to start or to get more playing time than Blake. I could, but I won’t, get into the whole argument of how he might have been used better than he was.
My beef is that it seems like there are a bunch of people who just like to get down on Sergio, and who don’t give him the least little bit of credit for the things that he has done well, and who don’t seem to recognize that he (1) is an NBA player and (2) still has considerable potential to develop.
I’m not here to argue whether he should be a Blazer. I happen to like the current make up of the team and am not looking forward to anybody being traded, but I understand that most of the folks here would like to see some personnel improvements through trades or free agent signings. Fine. But please don’t pretend that Sergio is just some talentless schmuck who might be good enough someday to play in the D league. Whatever the Blazers can get by dealing him away might very well look like too little in a couple of years.

I've always said Sergio is at least a backup
My complaints regarding Sergio have less to do with Sergio (he is what he is), and more with those who blame everyone else for Sergio’s faults.
Also, I take issue with the belief that there are more minutes available for Sergio, and while Nate probably doesn’t trust him… why SHOULD he? He isn’t a good shooter nor a good defender and over dribbles a lot. He shares a backcourt with Steve Blake, Rudy, and Roy— he should be glad he’s getting 15 minutes.
And I feel like he won’t get much more, if ANY more playing time with all 30 other teams. And on those teams, he won’t be playing with a countrymen who brings out his best play in him. Nor competing with a rookie who isn’t really a PG yet for playing time.
But of course he is an NBA level talent. I criticize those who blame others for ‘holding Sergio back’, as if we should be playing him over the people in front of him.
Sergio should want to play as many minutes as he can and be in a situation he feels is good for him. I just don’t think he’s thought everything out fully by going to the press so often, and really thinking he’ll find a better situation elsewhere. He is a 15 minute a game player, if you don’t have a solid vet to go to as a backup.
For all the crap Nate gets with his Sergio dealings, I doubt there’s another coach who would deal with him differently. Even run and gunners Nelly and D’Antoni would be playing a few guys in front of Sergio— and since Sergio is a very weak shooter and still doesn’t know how to properly run the pick and roll, I’m not too sure he is a good fit for teams that play faster anyways.
There is always much too much fuss and muss for a player who just isn’t worth the worry and attention. That’s all. He inspires a devotion that I admire, however. When he is on, it is beautiful to watch.
I liken his passing to a guy who is a real high flying dunker… it’s really cool when he gets one down, but it doesn’t really do all that much. Or, a streak shooter— play him when he’s “on”, but he hurts you when he can’t get a flow. And his “on” isn’t good enough to play through the off nights (since the normal reply to that is “he needs minutes to get a flow”, which I do agree is most likely).
But, Sergio is Sergio. He’s been Sergio since he was a rookie. He has added experience and comfort to his game. Again, I really don’t see what else he or his supporters expect. 15 minutes is as good as it gets.

here is why sergio will get more minutes somewhere else as a backup
when he is ON and having a good game, then kind where he is hitting shots, pushing the tempo and dropping dimes like there is nothing to it—and he does have these games—he will get 25 minutes. Nate is one of the least flexible coaches in the NBA, but if he plays for someone who employs more of a ‘play the hot hand’ type of substitution, then he gets more minutes. an then after a few of these games, he gets more confidence, etc. etc.
also, i think Sergio will look very different on a team where the offense is full of players cutting through the lanes, and actual plays with multiple screens and off ball movement, etc instead of mainly isolations.
"We have a different style, a European style," he says adjusting his jacket for emphasis. "They know it's cool.''

I´d trade with the Blazers. They have 12 players at least whom I want to have in my team.

Am I dreaming about
Reyes being willing to play the backup 4 and what do you think he is worth in the NBA FA market?
by southern oregon on May 27, 2009 7:39 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Now it´s not easy, because Real Madrid has decided to build around him and he´s under contract until 2010, and probably Real Madrid has an option for extending the contract one more year.
I think he decided to discard the NBA because NBA scouters didn´t appreciate him. Now he can earn more money and play a bigger role in Europe.
About what he is worth, I think he´s probably a better Diogu if I have to make a comparison.
