5/23 JD: What is your Summer Dedication
So we have discussed the dedication of our players for the game.
What is your dedication for the game during the off season?
What have you done to support the Blazers even though its the off season
Have you painted you face blazers red and black to a work picnic to show support
Have you stayed up all night after a busy day following trade scenarios
Have you traveled to Europe to do your own scouting trip to bring back to the edge.
Have you made your own draft day scenario posting it first to another site and then decided that it needed more traffic so posted a link to that site on B-EDge.
Have you gone on other team sites for the sole purpose of finding comments related to the Blazers so you could give a blazer fan perspective
Tell me your stories

I need a break in the off season
from most things blazers. I think if I rest a little I won’t get so burnt out next year and get fatigued halfway thru the season. By relaxing, I’m not reading any publications other than BE and I’ve limited my time here as well. With my free time I’ve been volunteering at OMSI.
I got 6 years of playoff blue balls going on, and I'm ready to release. GO BLAZERS. ~Mortimer

What kind of volunteer work does OMSI look for?

I knew grad students
that volunteered to man exhibits and lead tours around certain areas of OMSI..

I have scoured the web looking for information about the draft
I watched the draft lottery wearing my lucky charm hoping the right teams get in the top three, which worked out pretty well. I have scouted other playoff teams (well, I’m still paying for LPB). I will take on new projects in the summer so I have time again when the next season starts.
I plan to go to see Rudy, Ricky, Sergio and Joel in Poland if there is time on a weekend in September.

My dedication is to my own home team.
I check BEdge but try to not stay too long. (I try but sometimes the discussion is too good)
I invest more time in my family during the off season because I have to compensate for all the times that I have and willI dissappear during the Blazers season.

it's true!
I think I noted the same thing in my ‘Observations from Staples Center’ post.. it’s horrible.. my mom is still upset I couldn’t find her a simple Pau t-shirt…
that being said.. as much as I would enjoy seeing the latest “L.ker Dynasty” (that reminds me, the worst shirt ever is a Laker Dynasty shirt with West, Magic, and… Kobe.. on it.. ) ripped asunder before it even started, I am not sure adding Kobe to our mix makes it sweeter or just bitter..

I imagine Laker fans/Kobe fanboys would have that weird thing where two personalities tried to split into two separate people. I wonder if some would move half way between LA and Portland.
BS actually said Kobe should go to Chicago. Anything would be cool with me just to tick off his fans.

Shaq
Lakers Kobe will never overcome-
Magic, West, Kareem, Wilt, Mikan
that may be a bit extreme.. buut.. Kobe has definitely not secured even a top 5 spot.

The exact same players they are picking right now over him.
Now, does this mean he isn’t the second best player to ever exist or does it mean his accomplishments don’t quite measure upto others while being a Laker?
Land was created to provide a place for boats to visit.
by The Pirate on May 23, 2009 10:06 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
good question
The second is definitely true. I really don’t like giving Kobe credit for anything.. but he is a phenomenal player obviously. His accomplishments (2-3 post-shaq rings are essential) also ruin his second best player ever legacy.
But if we were to play the hypothetical new franchise draft game in basketball heaven where every player is at their prime and you have a lottery pick.. well.. I’m not saying that I would take Kobe all that high but I think a LOT of people would put Kobes ability and talent as still higher than his accomplishments and he would be very high (higher than many of those same Laker greats that he hasn’t exceeded yet) on that draft board.

Kobe is obviously an incredibly skilled basketball player.
Unreal as a SG but I find it so hard to compare positions let-alone eras of basketball.
How do you compare positions?
Is it dominance? Is Shaq more dominant as a centre than Kobe is as a guard?
Do you compare them in a one on one situation?
Do you take an identical team, and inter change the player and guess which team would be better? Even then it depends on the make-up of the team.
Then you have achievements, or how they revoloutinised the game. Mikan revoloutinsed the game, possibly more so than any other player. Kobe certainly isn’t particularly revoloutionary, people compare him to Jordan.
Achievements seems to be the easist way to compare people statistically. With points, rebounds, assists you can be convinced that something is worth more than something else, while others feel differently. Titles are universally recognised as the most important.
How? How does it work?
Land was created to provide a place for boats to visit.
by The Pirate on May 23, 2009 10:21 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
yeah it is sooo tough
because you can never “control” for the effects of the team, were Bird and Magic successful so quickly because they were great, they were on great teams, or.. obviously… both? Is Wilt better than Russell because Wilt dominated every individual statistic better even though Russell’s Celtics got the better of Wilt almost every time? Was that Celtic team amazing because it had so many HOFers or because Russell was such an amazing team player (on a team full of great team players)?
It’s nearly impossible to fully compare the abilities of two players with similar roles on the different teams.. much harder to compare the abilities of different positions.. And forget trying to compare players across eras.. no one can say that Wilt would be ____ if he were playing today or that Kobe would have accomplished ____ if he were playing back when and have any credibility. We can certainly view the athleticism in the progression of the game and make some inferences, but they are BIG leaps to make.
Teams make championships but a superstar that cannot win has two ways to think. 1. My team sucks and I need help. 2. I need to help my team become better. I don’t know that embracing number 2 guarantees championships (i.e., you need team talent and a little luck additionally), but I’m sure that embracing number 1 has never helped anyone.

It would be a meltdown
The “win at all costs” crowd combating with the “win with who we already like” crowd…
PERSONALLY, I am very much a dude who wants to win it all, but I would much much much much prefer it to be without Kobe. If we win with Kobe, then it’s “KOBE DID IT” and all that. Plus, there’s no way current-Kobe takes a backseat to B-Roy, on and off the court. And Roy wouldn’t want to take over for Kobe… though he should, on this team, and because everyone who meets and plays with Kobe hates him.
Kobe is an odd duck.
I do wanna win with OUR team, but at the same time it would be dumb of me to turn down someone who would make it loads easier to REALLY win.

There aren’t any open runs in my city (Population 360,000) and the schools are only available for badminton during non-school hours, same issue with sports halls (of which there are few).
I am so eager I have found a gym in Guadalajara with a full basketball court attached, I am signing up there and will use it as often as possible. I also plan on going to Portland for a week in the winter to catch one or two Blazers games and spend the etirety of the rest of the week playing in open runs and on outdoor courts. how long it takes me to comprehend what 500m means… seriously..
I start by thinking that a meter is a bit longer than a yard so then this gym is like somewhat further away than five football fields. errr.. no idea.. less than half of a mile? so embarrassing!

About 550 yard or 0.3 miles. I have sometimes the same problem. I was on a hiking tour in California and all the way signs through the mountain forests where in miles, and I got in the dark underestimating how long that really was.

Keep english units, or this will happen:
- Never give an inch! => Never give a centimeter
- The Longest Yard => The Longest Meter
- Missed it by a mile => Missed it by a kilometer
- Seven-footer => Two-point-four-meterer
The metric system => boredom.

thanks!
I had to google it after I finished my comment! My mental math skills are less than amazing, but mostly it is just tough to conceptualize “foreign” units of measurement. like Knowing that I weigh around 50kgs means nothing in my brain and if someone told me I needed to gain/lose some number of kgs to be healthier, my brain basically melts. or getting the price of things in $ (don’t even get me started with currency conversion) per kg or liter (I nearly died trying to comprehend the price of a gas purchase I made in Canada once)…
it is reassuring to hear that the difficulties go in both ways. I sometimes have this notion of Americans as especially ignorant on things like other languages and stuff. yah.. this is still largely true, but it is nice to see that at least my ignorance of the metric system is somewhat reciprocated on the other side of the pond…
Take it to the Hole!!

tho its now WOU. Utter joke of a college. Not sure what you are looking for Norsktroll, but its biggest claim to fame is being in an alcohol free town, although 2 minutes away is Independence, which survives on alcohol sales from WOU students. It’s also a Police training ground for impressionable militant ego-types who fancy writing tickets for any violation they can make up. They get their jollies making up for lost alcohol revenues by adminstering fines of the cheesiest variety.

I'm looking at a specialized course offered by a private organization that I might do sometime this year
And coincidentally they are somehow affiliated with that university, and that would be the way to transfer college credit out of that course and get an academic transcript if I would ever use it for something else (unlikely). It is not the main reason, and I would not be on campus. Was just wondering. Looking briefly at the Wiki and a few documents I felt that it was legit and associated with the OU system, but not the crown jewel.

Yeah, the level of violence in Audition is unfortunate. The only thing I can say in its defense is that, unlike movies like Hostel and Saw, the torture is not the point. I think it’s just a visual metaphor for the way men take it when sexual predation is turned on its head, for instance the way most guys respond to Fatal Attraction, i.e. abject horror, is pretty typical when the tables are turned, but at this point I’m starting to bore even myself so I’m going to stop typing.

Wayne Simien, 2005 first round pick, retires from pro basketball
Wow, he made some money, but shows how short pro careers can be. He won a ring with Miami, but contracted a salmonella infection at that time. And managed to somehow get a second one later. He last played in the second Spanish league. Now he wants to get into a ministry and youth basketball.
As for Miami: They got nothing out of him when trading him away for Ricky Davis (is that less than nothing?). At that time still on the draft board: David Lee, Monta Ellis, Brandon Bass, Ronny Turiaf, Von Wafer, Andray Blatche, Ryan Gomes, Marcin Gortat, CJ Miles, …

Now Trek fans can let go of their preconceived notions of what must happen, and enjoy the new universe.

But the rest of the cast was outstanding. Great choice for the role of McCoy, he captured the early part of McCoy’s surly attitude, and the reasons for it.

Just saw "Trek" yesterday.
Best film, episode, whatever of the entire genre. The only thing I didn’t like was that the plot seemed an awful lot like Nemesis where Picard battled his clone. I loved the reboot of the main characters in the new film, especially Karl Urban as McCoy.
Weird thing on a personal level: the film had me near tears several times, and I almost lost it when I was talking to my son afterward. I’ve been a Trekkie since the first episode aired back in 1966, and this film did such a great job of recreating my lost youth — too much of which I spent watching Star Trek, it seems. Or maybe I’m getting too sentimental in my old age.

06, 08, 09?
06 had traditional timeline editing features that were removed in the 08 version. 089 was more quick and dirty, Jobs said it was created by a video engineer at Apple who wanted to whip together a diving video in a few minutes without needing much precision. In the 09 version the combined both philosophies because many users were just very used to the traditional editing timeline. 09 got some nice features to quickly preview transitions and effects, and a pretty amazing image stabilization feature.
I worked a bit with 06, and then pretty much skipped 08.

And because of my position I have to be at every event. Some days I will be at the park from 9am-2am (Thirstsy Thursdays especially). I love it, but ti is a lot of work and a lot of hours. It pays off in October though, when I will be working 30 hours per week M-F at the same salary. As an ex-restaurant manager who has been working 70 hour weeks for the last eight years, this will be awesome. I haven’t had more than one day off for Christmas in nine years. Nine years! It was always, work till midnight on the 24th, drive to the parents house, enjoy the 25th, get up at 6am and drive back to work to open the restaurant on the 26th. This has always been the same on Thanksgiving and New Year’s too. This year I will have the 23rd of December through the 1st of January off, paid, without costing a sinlge vacation day. Not to mention not working nights throughout the basketball season and not allowing myself to go into the lounge, trying to duck the Blazer score until I got home to my TiVo, staying up until 5am trying not to wake the neighbors. Can’t wait!

That episode is "Fish Story"
It’s late in Season 1, so it’s not too far away in WGN’s current run.
True story: The episode was only written because the network execs said “you guys aren’t doing enough slapstick”. So the lead writer put the episode together, hated it, and used a pseudonym for the author’s credit. It went on to become the second-favorite episode of the series (after the Turkey one).
Go figure, every once in a while, the network execs are right.
The phone cop episode is the first episode of season 4, a 2-part episode called. “An Explosive Affair”. Also a personal favorite. It probably is a bunch of months away on WGN episode (since it’s 2 episodes a week, and 23 or so episodes per season, and they’re currently early in Season 1).
I can enjoy talking WKRP for hours. Sorry I missed this thread for a bit. :) Have friends over today.

Can you imagine what a story that would be in the NBA?
Also their security measures must be crappy. In a modern stadium you usually get your bags searched so you can’t bring flares and dangerous things like that inside.

That's the first thing my wife said.
When we went to Game 2, she was asked for her bag (so they could search it) three or four times by the Rose Garden staff.
She wasn’t carrying a bag.
That’s a stadium who’s taking security very seriously.

That’s the opposite of what I have experienced. I have brought so much stuff in. I bring a water bottle every game and they never see it. One time my bag wasn’t even open yet and they just glanced downward and said OK.

Many adults don't have the enzyme that breaks down lactose
So it passes into the colon undigested and ferments, causing cramps, bloating, pressure, gas etc. It’s especially true in African and Asian cultures, where they don’t eat much (if any) dairy. But even Europeans cheeseheads can have trouble digesting lactose. Personally, as much as I like cheese, I feel better if I don’t eat it, and I’ve never been able to drink milk, even when I was a kid.

by galacticlove on May 24, 2009 10:35 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
let me count the ways...
1. Modern dairy cows are fed and bred specifically with the purpose of overproducing milk; they also require extra hormones (e.g., Bovine Growth Hormone) and antibiotics.
2. Raw cow’s milk is not unnatural or unhealthy for a young calf to drink; it has all of the vitamins and fat that it will make that calf a cow. Same with people…
3. Pasteurization removes key enzymes, including lactase (which assimilates lactose), galactase (galactose), and phosphatase (calcium). Our bodies produce some of these and can be pushed to overproduce them, but the stress on the pancreas contributes to many health problems including adult onset diabetes.
4. Both the homogenization process and making milk “skim” further reduces the supposed healthiness of milk by removing the butterfat in milk that contains most of the trace minerals, fatty acids, and vitamins A & D. To make up for this, many dairy produces with add synthetic Vitamin D to the milk, which is harsh on the liver. It also replaces natural good cholesterols with the unheathy type.
5. The amount of calcium we are told that we are needed to maintain “healthy bones” is an average largely based upon the poor way calcium in milk is absorbed by our bodies. Phosphatase is necessary to breakdown the phosphorous that binds with the calcium in milk; much of the calcium you end up getting when you eat dairy products is lost in urine. All of the calcium you ever need is found in types of dark greens.
6. Each species’ milk is design to feed the young of that species and has the nutrients required for that species. When an omnivore or carnivore eats another species, it can take a lot of bad things as well as good things from that – but eating a sickly animal will still make another animal sick. Also, would there be anything natural to a herbivore eating another animal? No.. and it also wouldn’t be healthy… Likewise, omnivores (like humans) whose digestion strength is built mainly for vegetables, nuts, and insects cannot pretend that eating large quantities of cooked flesh and boiled milkproducts.
7. The Get Fit with Milk By Finals campaign likes to discuss a study that proves that drinking milk promotes weight loss and is a cure for obsesity. Lies!!!! This study proves that kids who drink three glasses of low fat milk a day gain less weight than kids who drink three glasses of sugary drinks like soda/kool aid. Great job, science, write me when that means the same thing as drinking milk is healthy.
nnoooow.. don’t you wish you’d kept quiet? ;)
also, thanks Corvid for mentioning the lactose intollerance issue. The fact that the majority of the world’s human population is essentially allergic to milk is important, too…

Seven games. I’m not sure that LeBron’s supporting cast is good enough to beat a good team. Sure, it works to use Delonte, Mo, and Varejao in the regular season, when teams can’t prepare the same way, but in a series teams can make LeBron beat them. It’s taken a superhuman effort for him to beat Orlando once in two home games.
A good team can expose Cleveland’s supporting cast and utter lack of a bench.

Yeah their bench is pretty non existent.
Wally Szczerbiak isn’t all of a sudden going to be good. I just don’t know though.
I’m not sure I am ever going to doubt LeBron’s ability to single handedly beat a team. The Nuggets don’t have anyone that can guard him. Period. When no one can guard him, he just as easily gets his teammates buckets as he does himself. Just think of the game against the Blazers….he had 34 points and 14 assists.

Next year, the Lakers will probably regress, as Kobe will be older and they might not resign Odom or Ariza.
The Nuggets are already over the tax in committed salary, without having signed Andersen, Carter, or Jones. Billups is getting up there in age also.
The Jazz will lose one of Okur, Boozer, or Milsap. They won’t improve, probably.
The Rockets are scary, but Yao’s been hurt four years in a row and Artest isn’t getting any younger.
Phoenix is dead.
New Orleans has to let some talent go for fiscal reasons.
San Antonio is ancient.

They don’t talk about software for editing. Hint: The good one won’t run on that machine
Avid’s available for Windows. I’m not convinced of how well it would run on most laptops, but it’s not my main specialty.
They don’t talk about how to get HD footage in there
Hmmm? There’s lots of ways to get HD footage on there, anywhere from the gigabit network to the firewire port.
The video card is "good? mhm". FAIL!
I can’t blame them for that. There’s no point in explaining the actual video card on the box, since it’s a lot for a thirty second commercial… It was a newer HP right? I presume it’s a mid-9000’s Geforce, which uses the G98 core for VC-1, h.264 and MPEG2 decoding on GPU.
The cars and clouds on the parking lot don’t change. Now that is video editing…
Funny enough, rumor is the commercials are edited on Macs. Of course, it doesn’t matter what computer the editing is done on, if they don’t have an experienced editor running them. I hadn’t noticed the parking lot though. I’ll enjoy that on next viewing.
My personal biggest problem with the commercials (other than the spoiled kid whose mom gets him blu-ray on his laptop), is that they’re supposed to show how current Microsoft is, but they’re not even done in HD. It makes them look immediately dated.
by Timmay! on May 23, 2009 6:59 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
It's the same in the mother and son spot
They just made them say the introduction, and then immediately filmed the closing scene where they get the money without waiting for anything to change before “going shopping”.
Of course Avid’s tools are available for Windows (though when I was in school they ran on Unix/Irix better), but you won’t have much fun letting it run on a mid-level HP machine (I assume HP is an unmentioned co-sponsor). Final Cut runs well on a MacBook Pro, e.g. “March of the Penguins” was edited on one.
The idea behind the spot is basically “yeah, artists use Windows too”
by Norsktroll on May 23, 2009 7:14 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I assume HP is an unmentioned co-sponsor
Other laptop makers are involved too… typically the commercials are filmed at Fry’s or Best Buy, and HP, Dell and Sony seem to be getting the “laptop love”. I’m more of a Lenovo guy personally.
The idea behind the spot is basically "yeah, artists use Windows too"
Absolutely. But I think it’s really for the aspiring artists (high school) who haven’t chosen their platform yet. I’m surprised they didn’t use a “college student going to film school” for the spot.
They have a long way to go to make headwind in the artistic market. And Vista won’t help. But having dealt with artists as an IT guy, it’s as much an attitude thing as a technical thing. They just prefer Apple, even with the same color correction and art tools available on Windows. I understand. An OS is often a personal comfort thing.
BTW I know how annoyed you are with Windows. :) I’m not really intending to be a pest. Just noting a bit of a middle-ground thought process, since when it comes to an OS, I use all of the above. To tell you the truth, I really don’t like the current Windows campaign (though it’s working), and I don’t appreciate the half-truths in the “Mac vs PC” Apple campaign either.
The video card was indeed a GeForce 9600. I looked it up. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a commercial (Apple or Windows, or PC maker) who specifically notes the video card model.
by Timmay! on May 23, 2009 7:25 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, I have used Windows long enough, still have it for use in corporate environments, and e.g. Photoshop ran better on it for the longest time when Mac OS 9 had a totally crappy memory management.
For this campaign I would just argue that out of the box people would get better video editing capabilities on a MacBook or MacBook Pro (including iMovie for free, and Final Cut in the entry-level version is better than e.g. Premiere Elements) no matter if it has “just” 2GB of RAM. That they fail to mention any costly additional editing software is a bit insulting in a spot that is about saving money, and the only software shown is MS Office.
by Norsktroll on May 23, 2009 7:35 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
That they fail to mention any costly additional editing software is a bit insulting in a spot that is about saving money, and the only software shown is MS Office.
Drives me nuts too. At least they didn’t try to pass of Movie Maker as an editing tool. I can do more with VideoReDo.
I wish “truth in advertising” was forced on both Microsoft and Apple. Both commercial campaigns would look significantly different.
But we’re in different places here. I’m watching the commercials purely to see if I think they’ll succeed. But you’re actively annoyed by any false statements because you prefer a different OS. I think it’s kind of like watching a game, and someone rooting for a team will see a foul, but a person not rooting for either team would say “eh. It was ok to let that one go”.
For example, Apple has stretched the truth to similar extremes in their Mac vs. PC campaign. Do those bug you? Or is it a home-team thing?
by Timmay! on May 23, 2009 7:42 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think the Get A Mac campaign is more abstract
There sure where some half-truths, but they are harder to pinpoint. Not that many products are even discussed (I remember iLife as a program suite, Time Machine, or the iMac in general).
What also helps: Hodgeman as the PC character is obviously struggling with the flaws of his OS or rather his existence, but you can argue he is more likable than Justin Long as the Mac.
My favorite spot is probably one of the very first, when they discuss viruses and the PC sneezes, freezes and crashes.

There sure where some half-truths, but they are harder to pinpoint.
The half-truths there are often striking for me. But as an IT guy, I’ve dealt with both PC’s (Windows and Linux) and Macs in need of hardware or software repair… it gives a different perspective on everything both characters say.
While the campaign is abstract, when they cover details, they do a fair job of “dancing around the truth”, similar to the PC ads.
Hodgeman as the PC character is obviously struggling with the flaws of his OS or rather his existence, but you can argue he is more likable than Justin Long as the Mac.
Hodgeman steals the entire Apple campaign. He’s just so… likeable. You just can’t dislike the guy. He’s basically himself, based on his Daily Show appearances.

She thinks it’s unrealistic for a different reason: The people in the cab (other than the driver) are at the wrong age for this song: They’re too young to know the song from their youth, and possibly too old to have heard their parents playing it (as a classic) when they were kids.

on the one hand, the nugz are just completely full of themselves idiots and to see them win would given credence to them and tarnish all that is good. however, if they win, it won’t mean much for the future of the team. This team will not stay together and success will drive it apart, not push it together. The lakers, on the other hand, would be rocked to their core if they lose but could very well improve if they win.

Man, that's exactly how I feel about both teams.
I want the Nuggets to lose just to shut them up but I also want the Lakers to lose just to see everyone freak out.
I worry that the Cavs will crush our dreams. Unless of course, LeBron goes to a different team. Then I worry about THAT team crushing our dreams.

my biggest fear
is some team can find a way to combine LBJ with another All-NBA level player..
that could be scary..

Kobe looks exhausted.
Fearthesword.com: "There is no doubt that the long layoff, combined with the ease of the first two rounds had the Cavaliers a bit tired in the 4th quarter."

I wonder if he personally trained to play in Denver.
He probably wasn’t expecting to play them, so he may not be prepped for the high altitude. Combine that with the “everything goes through me” style he’s playing, and…

I love Dahntay Jones's
fouls. Let’s just shove someone from behind and act like a tough guy afterwards clapping. When is he going to realize he isn’t any good?

If Denver wins this series
Does Billups move into a front-runner for the Hall of Fame? Or does he have more to prove?

Was he ever the best point guard in the league?

debatable, I suppose… Kidd and Nash were probably better during Billups’ prime, though.

Fisher has titles, but he never was even an All-Star

Billups was a finals MVP on a title team
Eventually, there will be a point where the voters say “once he got over injuries… everywhere Billups went, he was a leader and made teams better”. Fisher can’t claim that.
I’m saying all this, and I’m not a huge Billups fan. But he’s starting to make a claim that he’s underestimated, without attempting so.
Billups is the Scottie Pippen of Point Guards.

eh… I dunno about that. Pippen was in a different league statistically. Billups is an excellent, excellent player, but not a top 50 all-time type guy.

Pippen was underestimated for years until he was away from Jordan...
Billups was underestimated for years until he was away from the Pistons.
I’m really curious how his career develops from here.
“Pippen’s not an all-time top 50 guy if he’s not playing with Jordan” was a popular comment, but he showed his own abilities afterward.
