Tyrus Thomas available?
According to Alan Hahn of Newsday, the Bulls are shopping Tygger--and might offer him cheap to anyone willing to take Kirk Hinrich off their hands.
The rumor, as stated, seems to think that the Knicks have a shot at Thomas. But assuming he could get along with Nate and stay out of trouble--he'd be sweet on the Blazers bench. We haven't had a havoc-wreaking non-center since Ruben left--and I'm sure we could tolerate Captain Kirk's contract. (If the Knicks were to acquire Hinrich--I would be POd if I were Chris Duhon).
OTOH, I suspect this rumor is, like most rumors, silly.
Hat tip to the Blogfather.

He's not a banger. Athletic but not built like a tank.
The Kings have the best bench I’ve seen. There are easily 14 guys on this team good enough for every bench in the league. Now if we could only get some starters, I’d totally jizz in my pants.

Sounds like this would be a good option fixing both the PG and the backup 4 positions
What would we have to give up to get him?
by trk on May 22, 2009 1:45 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Capwise, to make it work,
we’d probably have to sign Raef to a Keith Van Horn-type deal, then throw in Travis. That probably isn’t enough player-value-wise—Chicago has shown (recently) that they won’t give away talent for nothing. Apparently, they learned a lesson in the whole Tyson Chandler / JR Smith giveaway.
Sergio would probably be a good thrown-in; as they would need a backup PG to replace Kirk—but I think that’s still not enough.

Couldn't the Blazers use cap space instead a giving Raef a new contract?

Blockbuster: Blake, Outlaw, and Fernandez for Kirk Hinrich and Tyrus Thomas
Just a wild idea to think about. I bet we could get Kirk Hinrich and Tyrus Thomas for three of our players: Blake, Outlaw, and Fernandez. I know giving up Fernandez doesn’t sound appealing right now, but that’s probably what it would take. The Bulls are going to need a starting 2-guard if Ben Gordon leaves. Furthermore, it’s unlikely that Fernandez will be content playing behind Brandon for the long-term given Rudy’s ambitions and desirable shooting skills. Not sure that Fernandez has what it takes to consistently get his shot off and defend in playoff situations anyway. Martel has as much potential to drain 3s and will probably prove to be a better, more versatile defender with his size. I think Outlaw and Blake would also fit nicely into the Bull’s system. They need to fill the backup PG spot, which Blake does solidly and Outlaw gives them scoring punch. The Bulls would probably willing to pull another big trade because their trades last season helped them upgrade significantly.
Hinrich would become our starting PG and Thomas would potentially play a multiple backup role at SF and PF. He would be much better than Outlaw at defending the PF slot and he can rebound and block better too. The departure of Fernandez would leave minutes for Martel at backup SG. In this way we could potentially find enough minutes for Martel at SG/SF, Thomas at SF/PF and Batum at SF. Batum would probably be the odd man out with the fewest minutes behind Martel and Thomas, but I think this scenario could work for at least a couple of years until Batum becomes the dominant player everyone expects. Lastly, I think we would still need insurance at backup PF, so taking a young, high energy PF like Tyler Hansbrough in the draft would make sense.
This trade would keep us young and add playoff experience at needed positions (PG, SF). It would also give us a better defensive presence at SF and PF. Overall it addresses many issues, be it at PG, SG, SF, or PF, and I think it actually increases our versatility. I’m not sure that giving up 3 players to get 2 would work out financially in this situation given the relatively small contracts of Blake, Outlaw, and Fernandez and the bigger contracts of Hinrich and Thomas. It might be nice if it did, but I’m not the one to analyze that situation. If it were possible given our salaries/cap space etc., maybe they could also throw in Tim Thomas. I like his game.
What do you think?
by MisterOden on May 23, 2009 2:21 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
No way the Blazers do that
The Blazers are giving up arguably the best player in the trade (Rudy) for relatively small upgrades at 2 positions, and they are also sacrificing their cap space to do it. If if were just Blake and Outlaw for Hinrich and Thomas that would be a reasonable deal (upgrading defensively at the expense of cap space), but add in Rudy and it just becomes horrid for the Blazers.
by trk on May 23, 2009 3:52 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
The Bulls wouldnt do it
Nobody outside of Portland knows how good Steve Blake is. Chicago would erupt in riots if they traded Thomas and Hinrich for only Blake and Outlaw. To Bulls fans they are garbage
by quezadaz on May 23, 2009 7:03 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Even if it gives them a shot at LeBron/Wade/Bosh?
Talent wise Hinrich and Thomas are a little bit better than Blake and Outlaw due to being better on defense. However, they are also paid a lot more than Blake and Outlaw. By getting rid of Hinrich and Thomas, the Bulls will save money which they could spend on other players.
The only Bulls players with guaranteed salary for 2010 are Deng, Hinrich, and Salmons. They also have some cheap team options on Rose and Noah. If they dump Hinrich, they can pick up the team options on Rose and Noah and still only have around $25 million of total salary. With that much cap space they could sign a superstar or two to pair with Rose and end up with a pretty good team.

upgrades hard to find
Parting with Rudy might not be a great idea, but being able to upgrade at PG and SF/PF is what bringing in Hinrich and Thomas would do. An upgrade over quality players like Blake and Outlaw is hard to find, but we need it to win a championship. Given starters minutes again, I think Hinrich will find his groove in Portland and show he is a more complete PG than Blake. Much like Outlaw, Thomas gives us an athlete who can play SF and PF, but he gives you defense, rebounding and intangibles you need to win playoff games. So, having the chance to upgrade at PG and SF/PF with young talent should not be underestimated.
by MisterOden on May 24, 2009 11:55 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Upgrades are nice, but
the problem is that Hinrich and Thomas aren’t very big upgrades and they would use up most of the Blazer’s cap space, severely limiting the Blazer’s ability to acquire more talent. Offensively, Blake and Outlaw are probably better than Hinrich and Thomas so the deal would really only help the Blazers on defense. Even without Rudy, this seems like the type of deal the Blazers should do if they can’t get anything better with the cap space, rather than the type of deal that they would be really enthusiastic about.

Discussed this a while ago
Thomas/Kirk for Blake/Outlaw/Pick(s)
They get rid of TT and save money on Kirk. They get a backup PG who is actually a backup PG as well as a SF/PF hybrid.
We get a PG and a true backup PF. And TT + LMA would be funny.
by Zaig on May 22, 2009 2:07 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I would take him on my team.
If only for the comical value of having both TT and LMA.
Seriously though, I’d take him.

I heard about this yesterday and thought
it might make sense for Philly to try and dump Brand on them and pick up a pg and another forward project as they are almost certainly losing Miller and Thomas would be a nice add for just about any team
I dont know why he is getting called a banger though. Garbage man and good weakside defense are more his calling cards.

He's not going to play
He’ll sit on the bench and sulk and it would be counterproductive to have him on the team.

I'd do it, if nothing else to get Kirk. And if TT didn't work out, we could just let him go, or trade him at the deadline. His perceived value is rising.
We would have to throw in another player other than Blake and Outlaw, as the salaries dont match. Blake, Outlaw, and Frye in a sign and trade would do it. Chicago would at least have to consider that one.

Memphis has Conley
and will in all probability draft Rubio.
Like Chicago with Hinrich, Memphis will hang onto Conley until Rubio requires the major minutes.
Potential vs proven? Requires NBA game-time performance before giving up an asset.
And whether THAT asset is a better fit in your system.
Rose is proving to be a better fit for Chicago, that doesn’t mean " Hinrich isn’t that good."

I don't think Thomas gets moved.
“The word on the street is the Bulls will open contract extension talks with Thomas’ agent this summer — he is eligible for an extension that would kick in for the 2010-11 season this summer — to keep him in Chicago. That’s where Thomas wants to be and that’s where the Bulls want him to be.”

Foye is coming along, Gay is really good and Reddick is coming along as well in the playoffs while still a crappy defender
But yeah, not a great draft lottery. The Blazers definitely got the best value out of that class, and arguably even the two best players.

Gay is not on par with LMA
Rudy Gay didn’t really play that well this year. At this point I would say that LMA is definitely the 2nd best player in the 2006 lottery, and his main competition for 2nd best in the 2006 draft overall comes from Rondo and Millsap.

Bargnani-not a bust
He averaged 15points 5 rebounds and is a 7 footer that can shoot 40 percent from the 3. He also averaged 1.2 blocks and this is in 31 minutes. Our beloved LaMarcus averaged 18 points 7.5 rebounds .9 blocks in 37 minutes. I would say that these two players are pretty similar; Both power forwards that would rather shoot a jumper than bang. I like LaMarcus more because he is more athletic and more of a post threat. But I think it might be going too far calling Bargnani a bust.
by NDREXLERDRIVE on May 23, 2009 4:32 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Bargnani is a poor rebounder and a terrible, terrible defender at 3-5. He actually has a negative Wages of Win score, meaning that by Berri’s estimation, they’d be better without him playing. I’m not a huge fan of Berri’s, but it’s pretty interesting.

Tyrus had some great games last season
For whatever reason, he fancies himself a jump shooter, so he takes too many jumpers, but he’s a helluva athlete and a good, active defender… but not really a smart one.
But weakside shotblocking wise, he’s like Josh Smith two seasons ago.
Tyrus suffers from tweendom and positionlessness, but if I had him on my team he’s a guy I would set free to create havoc on the defensive end— block shots, gamble for steals, just use that length and athleticism as a wild card.
He certainly is no bust and actually should become a pretty good player. I’d be surprised if the Bulls lose him, though I could see him being a big part of a nice trade. He showed plenty of value this last season.

The Josh Smith comparison sounds pretty good. Or maybe an Antawn Jamison/Tyson Chandler mix. I was thinking if we could give up Joel in a multi-player deal because I somehow thought TT was 6’11’’, but at 6’9’’ that is not an option. Great backup, but not for the C spot. I think PF will stay his position.
