Bill Simmons says CP3 is available

This from Bill Simmons on page 2 today:

If Steve Nash can win two MVPs, Chris Paul can win one. Where is he playing in two seasons, though? Rumors are flying that New Orleans might gut the roster this summer and that, as crazy as this sounds, Chris Paul could be had if you can save them a boatload of money in the process.

He goes on to propose a trade with Houston in which the teams basically trade starters, except for Yao.

Seems like Portland might have the tools to save New Orleans some money.  What would you trade to bring CP3 and his future MVP award to Portland?

Brandon Roy or Greg Oden. Yes that includes LMA Rudy et al.

Agree.

ANYONE but those two I would trade for him. Do what it takes. A Back court of Paul & Roy would be so sick it should be illegal.

My favorite teams are the Blazers and any team that is playing the Lakers.

for CP3 he is tradable

Alridge might be an all star in 2010…and maybe a damn good perennial all star…but CP3 is not only a perennial all star he was a mvp candidate.

CP3 had a bum knee and was popping painkillers. I’m not surprised that he had a poor series.

Paul allen has been financially

struggling w/ the loss of his cable company and his pride. Word in Portland is they are going to gut the roster and rebuild. They could be selling Brandon Roy for money saving and the 2010 free agency market.

should I have put this in the trade drawer?

Since it was a quote from another source, and since it didn’t offer any actual trades, I thought it was appropriate to post it on its own. Sorry if I violated protocol.

To be honest, I'm on the fence

It is a real quote that will lead to trade speculation, the only problem is that Bill Simmons is the source. I take everything Chad Ford says with a grain of salt so everything Simmons says should be taken with at least two tablespoons full of salt.

Chris Paul starts his new contract this summer, which makes him a base year compensation player next season, which makes him tough to trade. There are a couple of ideas in here, though.

I can't stand watching Chris Paul

he leads the NBA in whining ability and it drives me bonkers. While the team would undoubtedly be better with him, I"d have a really hard time watching it.

So you’d basically have to throw in something like Oden, Rudy, Blake, Sergio, Outlaw, and cash for Paul/Chandler.

Would people be willing to give up Roy to get Paul?

I love Roy, he has meant a lot to the Blazers and I think he is likely to continue to improve his game. However, Chris Paul is by far the best PG in the NBA and it seems like a CP3+Rudy backcourt would be superior to a Roy+Blake backcourt.

I wouldnt do it. Doing so would contradict a ton of things that this team and KP are about. Granted I know lebron is possibly the best player and all that…but it would just cheapen it for me if lebron won a ring here when roy was responsible for our resurgence.

No

While I agree that CP is one of the best ever at his position, and that by a talent standard, it’s probably more than fair, I just don’t think it would be worth trading Roy and all that the city has vested in him, for CP.

Talent wise it'd be the right move

Culture wise… you don’t like to trade your stars unless you’re ripping the other team off. Especially not when this star is happy, brought this team back to relevance, etc.

by Zaig on May 22, 2009 3:30 PM PDT up reply actions

Simmons is smoking crack

But if this were true I’d trade anyone not named Brandon Roy and LaMarcus Aldridge to get him (well maybe LaMarcus?).

by nikolokolus on May 22, 2009 3:08 PM PDT reply actions

Hold on

Storyteller’s contract site tells me Paul is a BYC player. I don’t see how you can trade him and save the Hornets money.

Paul makes roughly 13.8 million next year, but as a BYC player his trade number is 6.9 million. We could offer a package of Rudy, Blake and Outlaw, but that’s peanuts. I guess we could also sign Raef to a 3 year deal with the last 2 years being non guaranteed and then trade him, Oden and Bayless for Chandler. I think that saves them half the value of Paul’s contract in the first year (depending on what they do with Blake and Outlaw’s non guaranteed deals) and about 15 million in the 2nd year.

They’d get Rudy, Oden and Bayless who are all young promising players with cheap contracts. They’d get Blake and Outlaw who are role players with cheap contracts who could be cut and they’d save even more.

We’d get Paul and Chandler. Hopefully Chandler can shake that toe injury and then we’d have a center combination that would hate each other and pretty much duplicate skill sets.

Paul/Sergio (if he stays, draft a pg if not)
Roy
Webster/Batum
Aldridge
Chandler/Przy

We’d still have a trade exception and the MLE to use for filling out the roster.

"It’s a good ol’ fashioned Rip City beat down!"

very true

ding ding ding

the only good reason to trade Chris Paul is if George Shinn is trying to beat Sterling as the owner most like Rachel Phelps from the movie MLB.. New Orleans will abandon the franchise, and it will move within a few years of them dumping Chris Paul for dollars…

Bill Simmons says a lot of things.

Roy is the best player in the world with the exception of Incarcerated Mike from Queensbridge .

by Nick Van Excellent on May 22, 2009 7:08 PM PDT reply actions

I like the sarcasm.

Anyhow, Bill Simmons’ rumormongering aside, the New Orleans Hornets should be able to find a better way to cut salary — such as by packaging David West with one or more overpriced players (e.g., James Posey, Morris Peterson, et al.) — instead of trading Chris Paul, who’s its franchise cornerstone.

Even if the stingy George Shinn is in full cost-cutting mode, he’d be stupid to instruct GM Jeff Bower to put Paul the market. Regardless of whether or not Shinn wants to keep the Hornets in New Orleans, relocate the franchise to a mid-level market with that has a state-of-the-art multi-pupose facility — such as Kansas City’s Sprint Center — or sell the team to an out-of-town billionaire (e.g., Oracle CEO Larry Ellison of San Jose), he’d be foolish to devalue the franchise by trading Paul.

by AK1984 on May 22, 2009 9:19 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah,

there’s just no way. Losing CP3 would cost them more money than it would save.

I called this like three weeks ago and everyone made fun of me http://www.blazersedge.com/2009/4/30/861092/now-that-the-post-season-is-over#15094507

everyone said that CP3 was not on the board and they would trade anyone but him but I think at this point they are just looking to salvage the franchise and move it in a few years. CP3 will be in a Blazer uni next season. KP loves him, CP3 loves BRoy it is a match made in heaven, we have the financial capabilities to make it work and we will
