Defining B-Roy's Running Mate (Poll)

Brandon Roy is totally freaking SICK at Basketball.  It is unbelievably awesome that Portland has a player could easily become one of the top 3 most marketed(able) players in all of the Association.  Let's just see what a little more team success will mean to the forming legacy of Brandon Roy.?

This fanpost is not a trade forum, I don't want to discuss WHO should be brought onto this roster to be Brandon Roy's running mate... What I do want to do is to DEFINE Brandon Roy's game, his strengths and weaknesses.  By clearly defining Roy's game, we can create the criteria in which Roy's "Running Mate" will definitely need to bring to the table if he is to work with this team.  The way I figure it, Portland needs to balance out Brandon's weak points by grabing a PG who has strengths in his top weaknesses, and then one who also possesses some of those qualities that make Roy great.

Brandon Roy Strengths:

Excellent Ball-Handling

Good NBA size

Smooth Offensive game

Gets to the free-throw line

Fantastic intangibles

Very efficient

Strong guard rebounder

Solid playmaker passer

Roy's Weaknesses or Questions:

Only an adequate on-ball Defender

Not considered freakish athletic

Rarely shoots 3’s

Doesn't run the fast break

Needs to dominate the ball to be playmaker

Mediocre speed

So I would traslate Roy's match to cover these weaknesses by having:

1. Potential to be great on-ball Defender

2. Considered freakishly athletic

3. Efficient 3-point shooter

4. Great in Transition, running the break

5. Good court movement, can slash

6. Good Speed

Those would be the base criteria for players who would be that good fit for Portland... but what made Brandon Roy such a good draft pick?  What are the elements that made Roy an instant success and a player who is a star in the league, who DOESN'T possess that "freakish" athleticism?

1. Maturity: coming into league with a complete game, upper classman

2.  Control; low turnovers high efficiency

3. Confidence of physicality: BRoy is always talking about how playing his older brother is what made him good, BRoy has confidence in his physicality against bigger stronger players.

4. Toughness: Ability to absorb contact and still be successful

5.) Desire to win

So when we are looking at prospects in the draft or players KP could sign or trade for, ask yourself these questions... How does this player do with the 6 Skills Needed list?  and Does this player have any of the Top 5 skills that helped Brandon Roy to be an instant NBA success?

What do you guys think?  How would you define Brandon Roy's game?  How do you define the NEED to HAVE's of B-Roy's future Running Mate?

Also, where do you bet that next seasons starting point guard for the Blazers comes from?  It could be from the draft, free agent, a trade, or someone Portland already has... please vote on poll and discuss on forum.

yeah, Balyess does seem to have a pretty decent fit...

it is almost like KP and Tom Penn thought about this before last draft! Man those guys are smart.

having a scream that would make people go blind would be...

totally freaking awesome!

Just by talking trash Bayless would litterally make opposing players cry blood out their eyes… Now that is game away from the ball.

One more Bayless feature

He is big (not just tall) for his position. He should also be able to muscle his way to the hoop in the same vane as Baron Davis. I really think Bayless fits as a great backcourt mate for Roy. He jsut needs to come up to speed in running the Blazers offense. To his detractor’s, Bayless offense looked bad last year largely because it looked that he looked to try and pass too much. Bayless is learning the balance between passing and looking for his shot in an aggressive fashion. Neither Blake or Sergio have an aggressive offensive game except for dishing. By the end of next year we should know whether Bayless is an answer at PG. If he doesn’t learn to mesh, he will be a great value in the trade market; but I doubt he’ll get to that point.

by NWfan on May 22, 2009 2:00 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah

people harp on his 3pt shooting and do not realize that he only took 27 shots last year. Even a stat 101 student will tell you that 27 is FAR to little a sample to be count as valid.

He also never took more than 3 in one game. He attempted a 3 in only 19/53 games, and in those games, there were only 2 with 3att, 4 with 2 atts and the other 13 games he only took 1 3pt shot.

Hussein Bolt!!! Duh.

“1. Potential to be great on-ball Defender”
The guy is lightning fast, long, and no doubt has great reaction time.

“2. Considered freakishly athletic”
Makes Bayless look bad in this department

“3. Efficient 3-point shooter”
XXXX

“4. Great in Transition, running the break”
Would dunk like nobodies business if no one was near him on a break.

“5. Good court movement, can slash”
The man has stamina, could slash as good as anyone.

“6. Good Speed”
Try best speed in the world.

In conclusion. Hussein Bolt has the same number of pluses and minuses that Bayless has. We should obviously draft him.

by Zaig on May 22, 2009 12:47 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

isn't roy actually freakishly athletic?

and isn’t that what makes him so scary because nobody expects it?

"There are a few teams you have to watch out for in the fourth quarter."
"Yeah, but Portland definitely is not one of them."

-New Orleans Hornets broadcasters at the end of the third quarter with the Hornets leading 74-59. Portland later ends up winning 97-89.

"They don't mind him shooting that shot at all. Rudy Fernandez is not that great of a 3pt shooter."

-New Orleans Hornets broadcasters right after a Rudy Fernandez missed 3pter. Rudy Fernandez finished the game with three 3pters on six attempts.

His forty inch vert seems pretty freakish to me.

Brandon is just the master of lulling you to sleep with his seeming lackadaisical walking up the court and his “I look like I’m jogging but I’m actually running” stride.

yeah I hink of him as

sneaky athletic, not freakishly.

Brandon is NOT

A good playmaker. He’s an incredible scorer that’s for sure and he plays with a ton of heart. But his biggest weaknesses are running the break, hitting cutters, making entry passes, and defending the quick guys.

He also probably gets his points the hardest way of any other ‘stars’ in the league creating everything for himself. We need a PG who can feed him and feed others for easy buckets OR Brandon needs to become a much better passer.

sucks at Brandon’s weaknesses too, terrible complement.

It would be nice if Roy was willing to get some free points

Instead of doing it on his own all the time. Someone go look up how many of Roy’s shots are made off of assists compared to Kobe/Lebron/Wade!

Not a good Playmaker?/

Only 3 SG’s averaged more assists.. I would say he is a pretty good playmaker.

I cant wait until halfway through next season when Bayless is

leading this team, knocking down 3s, breaking peoples ankles and igniting the Rose Garden crowd with his dunks.

Right now Bayless is in a secret underground lab in the middle of the Nevada desert, training, launching more 3pters than there are Lees in a Beijing phonebook.

You can complain and pout that Curry is by far the better prospect, but in the end KP will either keep Blake or grab another vet to token start, draft a PG late in the draft as the 2nd backup PG and Bayless will be installed as PG2, much like Jack was a few years ago, splitting the mins 28 to 28 with Blake/vet.

You will be sitting at home watching games cursing every time Bayless dunks as he leads us to victory after victory, pining for what JJ Redi…err Stephen Curry, would of done in his stead.

I only tell you this because that is what will happen come November and there is nothing you can do about it except to deal with it and move on.

Just like Travis, Sergio and Bayless, plus Raef were all supposed to be gone for Hinrich, Jefferson, Butler, or Wallace before February 18th, it didn’t happen, leading to the 2nd best record in the West. Do we need to improve? Yes. But if we were a team that got bounced in the first round with a mixture of aging vets and talented youth, or a vet laden team coming together for one purpose, we would need to make some changes, but we are the 2nd youngest team in the league and our two “vets” are not even 30 yet.

All we need is time. That is what I have been saying, all the major basketball writers (for what they are worth) and most importantly, what KP has stated numerous times.

Blake/Vet will start and play 25-30mpg, more in the start, slowly tapering down as Bayless figures out how to play the bulk of the PG mins. It is simple easy and is what KP will do, you can take that to the bank.

you just described Nic Batum…

I'd move Bayless this summer

We need a reliable backup point guard next year, and Bayless is a project that we can’t afford to develop. The only way to learn to be a point guard is to play point guard and the expectations for this team are now too high for us to be developing a project at that position. The door for that closed at the end of this past year. Bayless had a couple of chances to get through that door, but he wasn’t up to it. He needed to play and develop this year to become next year’s backup point guard, but he wasn’t even able to get past Sergio. We have a project center and project small forward already, and their development is more important to the success of the team. Nate can’t afford to give him minutes to develop next year and there will be no positive outcome from that. I expect we will acquire a high quality veteran point guard as a starter or backup to join Blake.

by BlazerFanSince1970 on May 23, 2009 12:14 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Wow

Oden is a project?
Batum is a project?

Bayless didn’t show enough to even be the back-up?

You should hang with Larry Brown. You are obviously not cut out to be a fan of a team full of talented young players.

The Blazers managed to win 54 while playing 3 rookies in their rotation last year. We should be able to do just fine giving Bayless 15-20 minutes of back-up minutes to see how he develops.

Trading away guys with very high potential before they have a chance to show their game is bad economics. You do not get anywhere near full value.

"expectations of this team are now TOO HIGH for us to be developing a project at that position"

This would be like telling a builder “Hey buddy, we just don’t have time for you to finish the plumbing on this house… you see, the electrical is already done so we have to move on to sheetrocking now”

I would hope that the EXPECTATIONS of this franchise for success doesn’t cloud reality like back in the old Trader Bob era. To anyone who feels that Portland’s over-achievement of a 54 win season this year symbolizes that the Blazers have “made it” or that they mustn’t have any stumbles on their road to a championship, I say take a deep breath and realize that things are on schedule and giving some of these young guys (Rudy Fernandez, Greg Oden, Nic Batum and Jerryd Bayless) some time to get more NBA grit and become Men from boys is the BEST thing we can all do. Why feel like we have to rush this now? When your team is lucky enough to win a Top draft pick and go through a few seasons of gathering and adding lots of young talent you wouldn’t want the team to get crazy and sacrifice high talent low contract players to bring in players that might help you win more for one or two season… but not for six or eight! KP has done an amazing job so far making trades…. to get SPECIFIC players. Why question it? Enjoy the ride.

54 wins was phenomenal, Brandon Roy is getting big-time rec around the league, LMA showed his longest streak of dominating play down the stretch of this past season… these two cornerstones of this franchise are both under 25. Not quite even into their physical prime’s. There is a lot of room to grow, and if that means that next season we only get 51 wins, still make the playoffs I am fine with that season as long as the players show signs of improvement/development.

Sounds to me like

Rajon Rondo. It would be amazing to have him on the team, however I dont see him as a tradable asset.

Rondo

is who I was thinking too.

Offseason:
Trade For Mike Conley Jr
Sign Antonio McDyess & Othello Hunter
Draft Kevin Seraphin/Rodrigue Beaubois(Eurostash)

by TheGreatDane17 on May 23, 2009 3:56 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Rondo's numbers...

Rajon Rondo, 6’1" 175lbs, age 23 Drafter #21 overall in 2006.

11.5 points, 8.2 assists, 5.2 rebounds, 1.8 steals, 50% FG, 31% 3ptrs in his third season. Pretty good stats.

But as a rookie, Rondo got 23 minutes per game, although he didn’t play nearly as well as a rookie (41% FG, 20%3ptrs)… I think Rondo is a good mixture of what I would want in our Blazers Point Gurad… and I really can see a player of Rondo’s quality and impact very reasonably attained by Portland.

Just who it is, and what is the cost…. that is KP to know right now.

hope Bayless can figure it out. He’s got so much talent.
