omg.

If this is true then Rubio is going to play in Portland.

Bayless and Outlaw are both better prospects than any of the guys after Griffin, Rubio, and Thabeet.

Wow. That's a stunner.

But lets not be too quick to get excited over this. There are still 5 weeks to go til the draft. A lot of discussions and dealing can go on in that time.

However, if this is true, it will all come down to whether or not Memphis tries to call their bluff. If they decide to cut their losses, Portland would have a real shot at getting Rubio. This could be a very interesting draft for Portland after all.

Sactown can't outbid us, can they?

If they are serious about him not going to OKC or Memphis then it will just be all about who can snag OKC’s #3 pick.

Teams that could use a PG:
Portland Trail Blazers
New York Knicks
Philadelphia 76ers
Atlanta Hawks
Charlotte Bobcats
Miami Heat
Minnesota Timberwolves
Los Angeles Lakers
Phoenix Suns
Sacramento Kings
Dallas Mavericks

That’s a lot of teams who could be in the running.

Unless they're willing to give up Kevin Martin, probably not.

Though trading to the 2nd for the 4th and their 1st rounder next year would be mighty tempting.

I heard from somewhere

that he wanted to play for the Knicks.

My favorite teams are the Blazers and any team that is playing the Lakers.

There you go.

Sacramento would have to trade up to get OKC’s pick. I bet Portland could outbid them, which I would actually feel bad about.

I don't see Memphis giving us the #2 without Portland trading Rudy

They’d likely want the #24 pick, Rudy, Outlaw and Bayless, and Portland would have to take back a Jaric-type deal with the pick.

The question is, would it be worth it to trade all that away just to get Rubio? That entirely depends on your evaluation of him. Obviously, I think he’s got the potential to be an instant impact in the NBA and could be a guy who’s just under the CP3-Deron tier of point guards. So I think I would probably go for it. I could understand why others would be hesitant to do so.

i only want him to see him play with rudy.

I have not seen nearly enough of the kid to decide how worth it he is...

… but I wouldn’t be shocked if some team offered an all-star level player to try and get into that slot.

Outlaw, Bayless and #24 would be OK, though.

what it is

is a guy who knows that playing in either of those cities will not make him enough money in endorsements to offset his expensive buyout.

and playing in Sacramento will?

Whos the last clipper in a commercial and he would do better playing with durant or mayo than with baron, zack or what they got in Sacramento. When the team is better the more exposure you get. That’s usually how it works right?

playtime

if he is going to actually pay to play, I guess he wants as much playtime as possible, and that is only possible in LA clips and sac, not memphis or thunders, those 2 got already solid young pgs.

by Ristlin on May 21, 2009 3:13 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Um, the clips have a star PG

and while they could easily move Baron, the Grizz could easily move Conley. In fact, it’s probably easier to move Conley. And, of all the teams not needing Rubio, I’d think OKC would be one of them.

Many people in Memphis think Conley doesn´t fit with Mayo.

It seems they tried to get rid of him before because that incompatibility. But you never know with these rumors.

.... Sacramento has the Kings, not the Clippers.

Baron and Zbo play for the Los Angeles Clippers. Kevin Martin and Jason Thompson play for the Sacto Kings.

obviously

i didnt make it clear that baron and zack play for la clips and by saying whatever they got in sac i was actually saying that know one cares because that team sux and the 1 or 2 talented players there are irrelevant because that team will suck for years.

Neither would I.

You are talking about a high prospect vs. a near all star with supposedly lots of remaining potential. It isn’t even close. Only a team going into rebuilding would think about somthing like that.

One word: window.

Unless you´re not pressed to fight next year for a title and you value more the fun he´ll provide from day one. Adding Rubio the Blazers would be the most fun team to watch in NBA history.

Just what I feared: He wants to be a Laker and replace Fisher

"Rubio doesn’t want to go to Memphis, and he especially does not want to pay money out of his own pocket with that huge buyout for the honor of doing so. Fegan [Rubio’s agent] wants him in L.A., and if he can’t have him there, he wants him in Sacramento. Definitely not Oklahoma City."

I think he meant the Clippers as the #1 pick.

If he went to the Lakers I think I might not ever watch basketball again.

Question

Why does the title of this FanShot say Rubio “will” refuse to play for Memphis but the article says

Rubio’s camp may already be sending out feelers indicating that he’s not interested in the least bit in playing in Memphis.

This all sounds like manager talk.

In the Spanish media this was out 2 days ago and they way it came out it was just the manager talking, never Rubio … so this has me thinking that its the same argument, but they just put words in Rubios mouth to blow it out of proportion.

These are all Fegans words, who is Rubios US agent (also Shawn Marions agent...)

He just wants Rubio to play in a big market for the $$$’s, I really doubt Rubio cares where he plays.

by Xavier Garcia on May 21, 2009 7:40 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

he won't probably say so in public

but I would think that he cares deeply where he ends up. There’s a big difference between playing in the Clips, Grizz or Knicks for example (thanks to that #8 + Robinson possibility some of you have been floating around).

Grizzlies GM Chris Wallace: "Unless we find out that Griffin has two heads or something like that in his physical examination, it's a pretty straight-forward decision."

by medmelon on May 21, 2009 8:11 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Dont forget the Marc Gasol connection

Having a fellow countryman in your team is a HUGE difference maker, Ricky and Marc are good friends and I cant imagine them not wanting to play together, thus making me extremely cautious about these statements.

by Xavier Garcia on May 21, 2009 8:21 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think everyone cares a lot about what city they'd play in

but there’s a big jump between wanting to play in a city, and refusing to play in another.

It’s a simple fact of life that Texas and Florida teams will always have a slight advantage with FA’s because of the lack of a state income tax, and big cities are a lot more appealing than small cities for most guys because of the greater availability of endorsement dollars and the fact that it’s a lot more entertaining to be young and rich in Miami than it is in Minneapolis or Oklahoma City.

Still, there have been only two cases in recent history that I remember a guy refusing to play for a team, based on who drafted him: Francis and Ferry, so the odds are in favor of Rubio just heading out to OKC or Memphis to play if they draft him.

by Royster on May 21, 2009 9:10 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

add K*be

Which was actually a bit more similar to the Rubio situation. He came out ahead of the draft and said he only wanted to play for the L*kers, which caused him to not be picked until #13 in a draft day trade with Charlotte, when otherwise he would certainly have gone quite a bit higher

How did you guys win that?
"We scored enough points. We scored 107, they scored 105.

by douglast on May 21, 2009 9:56 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Dang, forgot about K*be

although it’s debatable whether he would have actually refused to play for Charlotte at the time since they drafted him solely to trade him. Vancouver intended to keep Franchise at first, until he caused such a stink they had to trade him.

K*be may have gone higher, but he was also the first big time guard taken out of HS. If you look back, there were a lot of GMs who said they would have flat out refused to take a HS guard in the draft (including our very own chemistry major, Bob Whitsitt).

the language issue is part of it

Living and working in country where you dont speak the lingo is difficult even though the team provides an interpreter/tutor. Felipe Reyes said in his" I am entertaining offers"statement at least one Spanish speaker on the team is mandatory. So you have a cant trade Rudy for Rickey catch22 cause if you do then Rickey dosent want to play in Portland

I guess rubio has known he would be playing in the nba for a long time now

Or at least he must have guessed it, he should speak at least a bit of english, enought to start. In spain, despite our 3rd world educational system we have to study english during our entire school/HS life. Our english level is awfull in general, but the basics are there, and for someone who wants/needs to learn english that’s enought to start.

I don't know how much merit to give this

But if that’s actually his attitude, I hope he gets reamed out by the media as well as the league. It’s counter to the idea that lousy teams should have the chance to get better, and it stinks of being a prima donna. If you’re entering the draft, you should go play for your team. That’s that. I’d have a hard time cheering for a player that thinks he’s too good for certain teams or cities.

by dan_the_man on May 21, 2009 9:35 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

the thing is

I’m getting a bit tired of trying to explain this…
Point 1: He needs to be a top 3 to have any chance to pay his buyout.
Point 2: He needs more money to pay it, from adds and other contracts he may sign. For this to happen he needs to be the star of the team, the face of the franchise, the shirt seller.
Point 3: If he’s going to have to pay for actually play, I guess he can at least hope for a team where he could enjoy the more minutes.

Points 2 and 3 are not possible in Memphis and Oklahoma, only in LA (big market) and Sacramento (he could get to be the star of the team).

by Ristlin on May 22, 2009 1:26 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I understand all those things

And I honestly don’t care. It doesn’t address any of what I mentioned. If this draft year doesn’t look like he could get what he wants (due to financial concerns or any other factors), he should have waited.

As far as I am concerned, entering the draft says: I am excited to play for whatever NBA team is excited to have me.
Any other response doesn’t sound right to me, as I said above.
