Episode 003 -- Blazers Edge Community Podcast
The third edition of the "Blazer Laser" is has hit store shelves the Internet. People are going nuts over this product podcast. Get yours before it's gone.
We've got SandbergOnSports in the house today, along with Norsktroll, calling in from Germany.
Today, we reminisce on the season that was and do a little looking forward to the future (interpretation: I try to figure out how to trade half our team + our 5 draft picks to get Ricky Rubio).
Direct stream of the show can be found by clicking here.
If you want to subscribe via iTunes, click Advanced on the top bar, then hit Subscribe To Podcast. You can then paste in this URL:
http://feeds2.feedburner.com/becommunity (this should work for any podcast catcher...let me know if it doesn't)
I also submitted our podcast to iTunes, so if the above directions don't work, try searching for "Blazers Edge" or "Blazer Laser." You should then see our podcast.
Again, I'll mention that this is a community podcast, so we want as many users involved as possible. Hit me up via email (in my profile) or Twitter (@prezofdeath) if you want to be on. The best is if you let me know what days/time frames you're generally available from so I can figure out when the best recording times are for people. Also, if you have specific topic(s) you want to talk about, you can note that too.
Ok, have fun! Feel free to comment, critique, discuss, and disagree in the comments. Would definitely like to hear some evaluations of the team, best memories, most painful memories, and things this team can look forward to in the future.
PS--apologies if the audio quality isn't super. I went out and got a new mic but I didn't have the chance to get that going quite yet, and Norsk was obviously calling from overseas, so it wasn't perfect. I'm still looking for ways to get our quality higher.

I haven't started listening, but it can't be worse than me
I’m getting a bit tired here after midnight, and I know I don’t have the deep radio voice plus no experience how to set my input on Skype for that. But well, hope we could provide some coherent thoughts and I can come back as a guest analyst some time :)
Needs commercials: Enter your coupon code Bedge2 for 5% off merchandise at the Blazers.com store
I wasn’t sure about the cussing policy and assumed we should keep to BE standards
I'm pretty sure we got the word "Lakers" in there at least once or twice, didn't we?
Goodbye Deke. The NBA will miss Mt. Mutombo.
Great to hear Norsktroll's voice
to match with his posts (we already knew what Sandberg’s voice sounded like from last week).
Good insight on Batum by Sandberg – ‘he never looked scared having to guard Kobe or Artest or….’
Very nice to get Norsktroll’s perspective on the European League – ‘nobody who could help the Blazers’ . And Pekovic is the next Darko?
to echo what tominrehab said, it would be great to have you on the show Storyteller

Now that the seasons over...
I find myself with a lot of free time. So much time that I don’t know what to do with it right now. Its funny how much time I’ve devoted to this team…reading, visiting be, watching on tv, and going to the RG. Its kinda nice to have free time again, but I’m sure I’ll pick up a quick summer hobby before next season starts.
I got 6 years of playoff blue balls going on, and I'm ready to release. GO BLAZERS. ~Mortimer
yea, same here
spend time with the family now I guess….
Here is my Playoff mode signature, that I thought up myself: "Just Do It".
The next evolution of Bedgecast
As a final segment, I suggest we do like a rapid fire word association for each of the guests.
I got 6 years of playoff blue balls going on, and I'm ready to release. GO BLAZERS. ~Mortimer
we should make it more like Around the Horn or PTI
get some debate going… Crossfire style, except without the political hacks.
I would love to do an Around the Horn type thing on occasion
I’m still looking into ways to get sound effects and mute buttons and all that.
Goodbye Deke. The NBA will miss Mt. Mutombo.
I actually did get a haircut and started spiking my hair a few weeks ago
but I don’t use 3 tubes of gel per day like Tony does.
acta est fabula plaudite -- Thanks for a great season.
good stuff
i love the euro scouting by norsk that should be a reoccuring segment.
also prez is sounds like a vet already with his hosting skills
"Howard, he know me" Rudy
he is a natural
he sounded really comfortable leading the discussion in ep 1.

That is so crazy
One, that we have a BE podcast, and that Norsktroll can call in from Germany to be part of it.
You guys sound totally official.
And Norsk’s voice is totally Euro-Dave.
If you listen closely you can hear my Tweetdeck
do a nice job of interrupting Sandberg.
Goodbye Deke. The NBA will miss Mt. Mutombo.
I can't believe you guys were so lukewarm on Hinrich
Folks, did you watch the Celtics/Bulls series? Kirk’s defense was remarkable. We’re talking about a huge upgrade on defense; not a small upgrade, a huge upgrade. He also is quicker and brings more to the table in terms of mid-range offense.
Hinrich would be a major upgrade over Blake.
that's why I wanted you to be on the show ;-p
but I guess Giants are more important than the Blazers….
hahahahahha
Goodbye Deke. The NBA will miss Mt. Mutombo.
ha, maybe next week, around the same time
Interesting that you discussed Calderon. While a healthy Calderon is better offensively than Hinrich, I’m not sure he’s a defensive upgrade over Blake. Hinrich might be a better fit.
Kirk Hinrich would be an immensely better fit than Jose Calderon, who's both laterally slow ...
and physically weak on defense. Calderon is utterly atrocious defensively, for it’s as if he got stuck with the utterly horrendous combination of Steve Blake’s inability to stop quicker point guards from driving and Luke Ridnour’s difficulty with fighting through screens.
At this point in time, my opinion of folks who don’t recognize how good Hinrich is as an all-around player lack an appreciation and/or understanding regarding the importance of perimeter defense.
That’s a sad thing, too, especially after the Trail Blazers employed a bad defender (i.e., Blake) and an overall mediocre defender (i.e., Sergio Rodriguez) — as well as a hilariously abysmal defender (i.e., Jerryd Bayless), who’s exceptionally overaggressive concerning on-ball matchups, unable to clog the passing lanes or effectively close out his man due to his laughably tiny wingspan, and an epic failure when it comes to fighting through screens — thus, there’s plain and simply no excuse for some folks’ obtuse ignorance around here with respects to Hinrich’s greatness on defense.
I've said it before and I'll say it again
I haven’t watched a TON of bulls games, so I am completely, 100% guilty of looking at his stats and making my judgement off those. And obviously, stats don’t show quality defense.
I would love to see Kirk in our system, but I’m curious as to what it’d take to get him.
Goodbye Deke. The NBA will miss Mt. Mutombo.
over at BlogaBull
they mentioned trading Hinrich to Portland for Steve and Travis.
Hinrich’s defense in the series was incredible. He guarded Allen, Pierce, and Rondo at different junctures.
draft dejuan blair
so you're KP..do you pull the trigger?
yes or no and how easy of a decision is it?
acta est fabula plaudite -- Thanks for a great season.
sadly, i would have to say yes...Hinrich would be a huge upgrade for our team defense
…the PG position is the frontline of the defense, without it, it makes everyone worry too much about collapsing the paint…hence, all the fouls, etc…
i take that trade BUT not sure about his hefty contract
Go Blazers!!!!!!!!!! Wooooooooooot Wooooooooooooot!!!!!!!!!
Mmmk
It is definitely not an easy decision. Trading two players that are central parts of team chemistry is never easy. But…
Travis is one of four Blazers who had a negative +/. Over the course of a season, +/- can be pretty telling. The fact that Batum is one of the better +/- SFs in the league and Outlaw is a negative is important.
-Currently, Portland is one of the best offensive teams in the league and a mediocre defensive team. Roy and Aldridge, though not great defenders, are obviously part of our rotation. The only positions, then, to add defense are at the 1, 3, and 5. A team with two offensive-minded players as part of the core needs defense at the other three positions.
-Travis isn’t the greatest stylistic fit. He’s a tweener who doesn’t excel at guarding either position, and he’d be a better fit in a fast-paced system which could minimize his weaknesses and maximize his strengths.
-Steve is great, but he has physical limitations on the defensive end. He is fantastic, and has really gotten the most out of his talent. We simply need a defensive stopper at point guard.
-The roster has to be consolidated at some point, plain and simple. Martell, Nic, Travis, Rudy, and Brandon will all lay claim to some minutes at the 3 next year. Plain and simple, we need to have less players fighting for these minutes. Out of the three SFs, Travis is probably the weakest defensively, due to Martell and Nic being above-average defenders.
-If we were to make the Blake/Hinrich deal, we could draft a masher at the backup 4 (think DeJuan Blair) and have a legitimate ten man rotation as follows:
Hinrich/Bayless/Sergio
Roy/Rudy
Webster/Batum
LMA/(Blair/Patterson)
Oden/Przybilla
That’s a solid, solid, solid lineup.
-Kirk Hinrich is one of the best defensive point guards in the league, and also has a great concept of team defense. He’s big, can shoot, and pretty much is the exact model of what Nate wants in a point guard. He’s also regarded as an enforcer type, always there to fight for his teammates, like Joel does.
I love Travis and I love Steve…. but we need defense at the point and rebounding at the backup 4.
draft dejuan blair
ya i REALLY like that deal
the only downside is it makes too much sense to actually happen. U would kill 3 birds with one stone on that one: fixes the logjam at sf, adds more perimeter defense, and improves our rotation at the pg position(cause i think sergio is gone this summer anyways). The price is irrelevant cause kp has said before that if allen wants someone money is no an issue at all.
"Howard, he know me" Rudy
As long as the trade is made before 7/1/2009, then yes is my answer.
Travis Outlaw and Steve Blake’s salaries for next season are completely non-guaranteed if they’re waived before 6/30/2009, so the Chicago Bulls could cut them both and thereby have enough cap space to re-sign free-agent Ben Gordon without going over the luxury tax.
Does it make sense to change....
….Steve for Sergio? I would rather do that trade i think (I don’t know if it works money-wise). Personel-wise I would prefer to keep Steve…..but I think I am on board for Capt. Kirk
"You're welcome friend
I love you."
- Tom "Dragline" inHawaii
yes
we may be giving up a lot in that trade for him, but…we get a PG that fills a glaring weakness. we can replace bench scoring a lot more easily than we can with a solid starting defensive pg.

cant forget he was frustrating rondo so much
that he lost his cool. rondo…one of the quickest guards in the league as well.

I love this stuff. You all sound great.
Norsk, you speak English as well as you write it. I know that’s not always the case when it’s a second language. How many languages do you speak so fluently? SOS, you’re very articulate. These podcasts just get better. I hope you keep it up during the off season. Thanks guys. Maybe the next step will be taking calls or answering emails during the show.

3M will return !!
He will give the Blazers the physical athletic force at the SF
with range. He and Batuuuum will be a great combo of O & D.
Both will develop to give us two of the best SF’s in the league.
Martell would be more physically able to body up to bullies like
Ron Ron /Battier. Batuuuuuum will continue to improve and refine
his shot and drive. Eventually we will have two SF’s committed to
being D stoppers !! (Get well Martell )
P.S. – Sergio & Outlaw – BYE
It's GO time !
sergio.. is pretty much gone.
bring over kirk for FA, he would be perfect in a Blazer Uni.
"Awesome! Totally awesome! All right, Hamilton!"
its funny how vocal
people are at getting rid of our bench players. sure they frustrate the hell out of me too, but it seems like people would be thoroughly happy seeing them go when we had one of the deepest benches in the league. sergio as an individual player was not great, and trout was not that great, but that unit as a whole was extremely effective and fun as hell to watch.

i figure we got 54 wins and we sure ain't going backwards next year
so i’m happy no matter w hat

agreed
a lot of people seem to overlook the fact that we are young…even if we don’t make any roster moves it is fair to assume that we will improve as a team and players will improve exponentially from this year to next.

I absolutely hear that
sitting on our hands, we would get better. It would be really sad to see Trout go… but this is the last offseason we have to make big moves. After this, it’s pretty boring offseasons from here on out.
draft dejuan blair
i'd be sad to see anyone go
hell even channing frye has a place in my heart for this team. As much as I rag on Trout, I’d miss complaining about his BBIQ here or saying Nate sucks for trusting him so much. I’d rather have him as a whipping boy than Jack or anyone else.
