Let me help you...

good defensive player, doesn’t get beat by quick point guards like Blake. Can penetrate the lane, knows Oden better than his own mother, and can hit the 3 ball (40%) at age 21. Fits into our window (the next 10 years) and is a great guy.

what are the knocks on Conley?

I remember during the draft they said he might be just a little overhyped. Obviously, Memphis doesn’t get much regnition so he is not a well known player. So what are his negatives?

Outlaw, Blake and if they get stingy #24.

Chad Ford predicting Memphis taking Thabeet ahead of Rubio.

Sounds like a load, Gasol is probably better than Thabeet, but worth mentioning, anyway.

Hope Memphis doesn’t get greedy.. They might want Fernandez or Batum. I don’t think the rumored Trout deal will still be on the table.

But yeah, do what it takes to get him.

That's crazy talk

I don’t think KP goes beyond an Outlaw for Conley deal period. Outlaw, at this point, is the more valuable player.

Outlaw for Conley?

lol uh why WOULDN’T we throw in Sergio and a second rounder or two? Conley is definitely more valuable then Outlaw for his position (PG one of the rarer positions) and his ceiling.

I'll kick it off

Blake, Outlaw, Sergio, #24 for MCJ, Jaric and Darko.

Memphis clears space for Ricky along with an established PG to hold down the fort, clears two overpaid players off their books.

In an ideal world, they’d take this, but it’s possible they might want Jerryd instead of Sergio. I’m okay with including one or the other, but not both.

When i watch conley he looks better on D than Blake

He has quicker lateral movement and can stay in front of fast guards on the perimeter so they wont be able to blow by and draw fouls on Oden anymore. His D will probably also improve since he is so young and Blake is pretty much maxed out where he is now which is mediocre.

By what you're measuring...

it also says that Blake is better than Deron Williams. Conley Jr doesn’t get beat by the quicker point guards, which is our biggest issue defensively. Conley Jr fill our biggest holes at the position for the next 10 years. He can penetrate the lane, he can dish, he can shoot the three, he can defend quick point guards. He should be on the team, and thas before you mention the Oden factor, age factor, or contract factor, all of which point to this as being a great move.

Did you notice that Mike Conley Jr has by far the best

+/- on the Grizzlies starting unit. He’s a well equipped defender, especially on smaller point guards which is our biggest issue defensively.

by as11osu on May 19, 2009 6:54 PM PDT up reply actions

The argument you want to make is,

Conley is only a 2nd year player and is about as good as Blake.
He should surpass Blake soon and has good Chemistry with Oden. Also, he has shown a willingness to play defense.

The only question then, is what about Bayless? Is Conley going to be better than Bayless?

Conley is not "far better" than Blake

I think the point we’re making is that they’re about equivalent as of today. The logic is that Conley is better situated to improve.

by rmcdougall on May 20, 2009 9:33 AM PDT up reply actions

Why would you look at PER differential

to argue defensive ability? Opp PER makes much more sense. Although that is also a poor measure of individual defensive ability.

+/- is also poor (somehow CP3 was the worst defender in the league last year and one of the best this year according to +/-), and defensive win shares…. Suffice it to say I have serious doubts about a system that claims Karl Malone, Chuck Barkley, Larry Bird (!!), Bill Laimbeer, and Magic Johnson (!!!) are the best defenders in any year in the NBA.

by howlingfantods on May 19, 2009 7:42 PM PDT up reply actions

Taking on a bad contract

I made this point last week. If the Blazers want to deal Outlaw and Sergio (etc) for MCJ, they’re probably going to also need to take on either Darko or Jaric’s bad contract. Hopfeully not both. Portland can make an unbalanced deal, since they’re under the cap. If KP wants MCJ bad enough to “free Darko” then more power to him. But that deal would eat up most of the offseason capspace

by two4larue on May 19, 2009 7:03 PM PDT up reply actions

It would just turn us into one of many MLE teams.

Also, after MC Jr, what are we really looking for? A PF to play behind LMA for 12-15 minutes? Can’t we draft that guy, or get a sweetheart deal on a player looking for a Championship? It’d be nice to get Bass, but that might not even happen anyway. You got your franchise point guard within reach, time to make it happen.

by as11osu on May 19, 2009 7:10 PM PDT up reply actions

We'd have no MLE this year

you have to renounce it get the cap space. Still, finding a backup 4 in the draft isn’t hard, and it’d be more likely that we’d just use Darko to back up LA assuming this is how the deal goes down.

by Royster on May 19, 2009 7:19 PM PDT up reply actions

Frye is gone, regardless

we need to renounce his rights in order to have any cap space to begin with.

by Royster on May 19, 2009 7:25 PM PDT up reply actions

If you know this scenario is going down

you can give him a bit less than you gave Martell. I wouldn’t doubt that Memphis wouldn’t be enticed my getting Frye as well.

I show Memphis these options and give them a point value.

Steve Blake
Jerryd Bayless
Sergio Rodriguez
Martell Webster
Travis Outlaw
Channing Frye
Joel Freeland
#24, #32, #38

There has got to be a decent package in there that works for both teams.

Mike Conley Jr after they draft Rubio won’t be worth a whole lot to them, but would be worth a good deal of that bundle to us.

by as11osu on May 19, 2009 7:31 PM PDT up reply actions

renouncing Frye's bird rights doesn't mean he is gone

The Blazers could and I think should sign hin as a unrestricted free agent. I think last year performance leaves him underrated and therefore his market value will also be low making him a steal for a 3rd or 3nd tier PF (behind LA and TO).

by mrwonderfulone on May 20, 2009 1:50 AM PDT up reply actions

Why would the Blazers take that AND give up outlaw?

This is just not making sense to me. The Grizz are cheap. It’s not like Conley’s the PG of the century. Most of these deals are hideously lopsided for Memphis.

That's what it will take

a lopsided deal for Memphis. And besides Outlaw is addition by subtraction assuming Martell has game also 4 pg’s would be horrible. Outlaw in case you missed the past few seasons makes terrible decisions and absolutely wilted in the playoffs.

we're not the only ones interested in a trade...

plenty of teams would love to get their hands on a good PG or PF.

Way I see it, they could even swap #1 and 2 or even OKC could try to buy up.

LAC has the worst luck insofar as what positions the top prospects play versus their roster make up..and their PFs aren’t very moveable.

Memphis has been stockpiling guards and would probably rather like Griffin banging with Gasol on the boards with OJ & Conley and Gay.

Wouldn’t you rather, if you were memphis, have this be your starting 5?

Baron Davis is also more tradable for the Clips

They could trade down with Grizzlies, then ship Davis to Golden State.

One thing: doesn’t Rubio say “no way” to just about every team at the top, and just stay in Spain?

by matthewcc on May 19, 2009 6:24 PM PDT up reply actions

thats what i thought.

b davis is disgruntled and more easily movable. I mean he signed their to play with his bud who then jetted town. he still has value. (maybe we can get him for cheap..just throwing it out there). Meanwhile, Randolph punching a dude getting into all sorts of trouble, he isn’t tradeable. Kaman and Camby are perrenial injury risks.

And i don’t think Memphis has to include too much to make it happen either. Rubio is a damn good player and while Griffin is the consensus #1 pick, its not by a mile. Its not the jump from Durant to whoever forgetably went 3rd.

I will also say that memphis is likely NOT to trade with us.

they have other options (trading with the Clips in a year when 1/2 isn’t a HUGE difference or trading with other teams like the Lakers).

We sent “The Email”, and don’t have a bona fide starter to trade them.

For instance: Would you take Odom or Outlaw+Blake? I think Memphis would take Odom.

Please, for the love of all that is holy, please stop using the following: "Book it.", "FTW", "Epic" & "Fail".

by nima on May 19, 2009 6:24 PM PDT up reply actions

That's assuming that they think 1/2 isn't a huge difference

It’s sounding based on the workouts that Griffin is pretty much locking himself up as a clear #1 over Rubio.

Besides, Odom would require a decent salary commitment from Memphis right now, and I don’t see LA being better positioned for a title next year with Conley instead of Odom. They’d have no bench whatsoever, and a relatively unproven PG next to Kobe. Kobe only has a couple more years at the top of his game. They can’t really risk wasting any of them.

by Royster on May 19, 2009 6:28 PM PDT up reply actions

Definitely possible

but that won’t stop GMs from taking him if he looks incredible. Darko was one of the most impressive looking guys in the last 5 years in pre-draft workouts. There’s a reason he went #2.

Conley is young has the needed skillset and is friends with Oden and will give a boost in production to Oden and seal him in Portland for when he has completely recovered and is dominant in the final year of his rookie contract i.e. 2010/11 season.

I think that's why they would want another PG back.

PG is too important to not have insurance at.

Sergio is a good distributor, he’s just not going to do anything on the Blazers.

by Bskey on May 19, 2009 6:31 PM PDT up reply actions

I think they may want Bayless instead

Since he would be able to play the 1 and the 2 as needed.

Sergio’s advantage may actually be the ability to guide Rubio through the first two years. I could see Memphis taking a flyer on him for that.

by Timmay! on May 19, 2009 6:32 PM PDT up reply actions

I would be willing to give Bayless, I think.

The kid is still a mystery as to how he’ll turn out.

I would just hate to see him traded and then have him blow up the next year.

by Bskey on May 19, 2009 6:35 PM PDT up reply actions

It'd be hard to blow up playing with Rubio, Mayo and Gay all as perimeter teammates.

But Bayless, Outlaw, Blake should be enough. Maybe we get back #27 from them and can move up to take Blair at 12-13ish.

by as11osu on May 19, 2009 6:38 PM PDT up reply actions

That is a good point.

It would be interesting watching a line up of Bayless-Mayo-Gay…

by Bskey on May 19, 2009 6:40 PM PDT up reply actions

WAYY too much!

Bayless has too much potential he could easily be as good as Conley. I only rate Conley higher due to further development (thanks to orders of magnitude more Playing Time) and the Oden connection. Bayless has equal or greater potential on the defensive end. I want both and would go Blake, Sergio, Outlaw for MJC jr. and Darko if necessary.

No

I’m all for Outlaw and Sergio + picks and even taking a bad contract to have a 3rd string center in Darko but Bayless stays. We need the insurance as much as Memphis. I would even trade Blake over Bayless. We need a PG for our core it ain’t blake and it may not be Conley. I guarantee it would be Conley OR Bayless though. One of those two will be a legit starter on a contender they have the tools they just need polish and floor time. Conley to Oden alley oops (and looking for him) would be reason enough to get Conley but I want Bayless as insurance.

I'll rephrase what I DON'T want to happen but what these two dumb-nuts could make happen

I have just one big fear: Dunleavy and Wallace are two of the worst GMs

1. Trading with each other so Griffin goes to Memphis (they really need a PF) for whatever
2. Rubio to the Clippers (they rebuild around Rubio and Gordon. Makes too much sense). They don’t answer KP’s calls
2. Clippers then trade Bdizzle back to the Warriors for Maggette (which was reportedly talked about)
3. OKC picks Thabeet
4. Sacramento picks Jennings
= We are screwed with four direct competitors improving. The best we could hope for would be moving Sergio and something for a pick high enough to get Blair or a new third PG.

by Norsktroll on May 19, 2009 6:34 PM PDT reply actions

Unless Rubio absolute destroys his workouts

I think it will emerge that there’s a huge gap between him and Griffin, similar to what happened with Rose and Beasley last year. Everything I’ve read about Griffin recently is that he’s a force of nature, and it’s hard to imagine a GM passing up on that, unless Rubio looks equally as impressive, I think we might be safe from a Memphis-LAC swap.

I trust your opinion, Ho-bob-ob

Earlier in the thread I was looking for the reasons NOT to go for Conley. What do you not like about his game?

Personally, I was never high on Conley going into that 2007 draft, but he has had a few injuries and a few coaching issues (not because of attitude or anything, just what the previous coach preferred), but he undeniably ended this recent season very strong. Now, we should always be wary of guys who put up nice LOOKING numbers on a bad team, and I didn’t watch him play much personally… though I was aware of how well he was doing, and had added him to my fantasy squad. He really was putting up nice numbers across the board.

He’s 21 (very young), very athletic, short but a good reach, good handle, very quickly became a good 3 point shooter, can penetrate… all the stuff we like in young guards.

I don’t care that he is Oden’s friend (I’d prefer Oden make it on his own, and make new friends and grow past Young Man Oden and become GREG ODEN, THE MAN), and I wouldn’t want to really use that as a priority in our decision making process.

With how he ended the year, and the potential he has, I think an Outlaw for Conley deal would be a steal for us— if only to have an asset like Conley, who many teams have craved. Taking a bad contract along with it (or a solid backup big like Darko) makes it all the easier for us to do the deal.

What do you see in his game that you don’t like? I am 100% seriously asking, because I just want to know more… since it seems so likely we could be trying for him, and he is sort of an enigma to me.

Mortimer

by Mortimer on May 20, 2009 11:58 AM PDT up reply actions

Why don't you think

the Oden factor matters? Oden has been depressed in Portland and seems to have trouble making friends with his team mates. Roy and Aldridge are both aloof guys kind of like Oden. Having a friendly gregarious guy like MC jr. who happens to be Oden’s best friend and happens to have all the tools we need in a pg ( except top shelf perimiter D) seems like a no-brainer to me.

Sure if we could pry Rubio away I would go for that but I almost think the Oden connection makes Conley more valuable then another guy with identical skills. If that roots Oden in Portland and makes him play happy and loose who cares if Oden is A MAN’S MAN (I don’t think that is his personality) and who says he can’t grow into that with his buddy at his side?

Portland should try to go directly for Rubio rather then try for Conely. Trout + Blake + Bayless might work or substitute Sergio for Bayless. Also we could throw in Freeland/Frye and picks and take back Darko who would be a perfect back up 4/5 3rd string.

Remember...

…Memphis can only pay 500K of the 7 million dollar buy out. The rest will be paid by Rubio. Even though Memphis is cheap, they won’t balk at paying 500K of it.

And Rubio might be able to get his buy out number down to something more reasonable for him.

Rubio

the more I think about it, the more I think Rubio slipping because of his contract status is likely. It seems a minor thing now, but I bet it will get complicated as we approach the draft.

Even the worst (best?) case scenario he wouldn’t drop below the Knicks at #8. But just because Rubio WANTS to come out, does not mean he can. The buy out is crazy as the parties are waiting for a ruling. If the judge rules for the team, Rubio might not come out, especially for the Clippers or Grizzlies.

Stay tuned….

There is a rumor...

David Lee (Restricted Free Agent) + NY nº8 pick to get Memphis nº2 pick. Memphis get the PF they are craving for (leads the league in double-double), NY doesn’t have to pay for Lee’s contract extension (thinking in 2010) and get a PG, Ricky goes to a big market and his sponsors pay the buyout. If NY signs Lebron and Bosh next summer they become contenders, and Memphis get this lineup: Conley – Mayo – Gay – Lee – Gasol.

It could work

And they can’t afford to pay for more hoping for a huge free agent signing in 2010. I had Knicks fans liking this. With KP mind tricks the GM might too. If he doesn’t, we might offer to absorb Jeffries who is a good perimeter defender but his contract runs one year too long for them.

My one reservation

if we do get conley and he struggles for a bit would Nate run back to his safety blanket Blake? Nate has issues trusting his pg’s and if conley is not immediately what he wants it could be trouble. While it is always nice to have that net there for us in Blake maybe it will hinder us from getting an exceptional point guard because they never get a chance.

Nate has issues trusting his pgs

This will be a problem for MCJ regardless if Blake is around, or not

Will Nate treat him more like PJ (tough love) and less like Hollins (more freedom to fail)? Will Conley’s confidence be shaken if he’s coached by McMillian, like Sergio (etc)

We’ll probably never know, unless a deal is made. (Personally I’d keep Blake, just in case Conley and Nate aren’t a good “match” personality-wise)

QUESTION

What is the argument AGAINST getting Conley? I get the arguments for, and they seem fine, but coming into the league he was expected to be up there with Deron and CP3. Drafted #4. An allstar. Memphis’ fans seem perfectly fine with giving him up. Why?

He’s shot a lot better than he was expected to. I don’t know his defense. I actually picked him up for my fantasy team to close the season out, once he started playing.

I don’t know enough about him besides him kinda annoying me by not passing enough to Oden in college.

Is he a great playmaker? A more pure PG? Great at penetration? Is it all injuries that have made his start slow? He was just a frosh when he came into the league, after all.

What is the argument against Conley?

Mortimer

by Mortimer on May 19, 2009 7:51 PM PDT reply actions

Now that's an excellent question

My hesitation about Conley has little to do with his skills or how well he’d fit into the Blazers from a basketballing point of view. It has to do with the whole “Greg’s best friend” hoopla and the fact that I think that’s a lousy reason (in itself) to bring him aboard. I’d love to hear from the people who are REALLY familiar with his game.

by Corvid on May 19, 2009 7:58 PM PDT up reply actions

Really?

He knows where Oden likes the ball, on the pick and roll, on the post, etc.

That is just a bonus, because he has some great PG ability as well. He has the quickness, speed & quick hands to be just as good as Chris Paul on defense in a few years. He is about the same size

I think they just like Mayo and Rubio more

That’s a very well-phrased question though. Why hasn’t he been special? He’s been fine, solid even, but not special.

His assist rate is nothing special (lower than Blake’s) and his TS% isn’t great either. I don’t really have a good answer. I like Conley though— good penetrator, willing passer, can create— why hasn’t he done more?

I don’t have the answer.

I was in favor back in November :)

http://www.blazersedge.com/2008/11/29/675128/the-potential-trade-dum-du#10322101

Strengths: Fits our core ideally at only 21. Very good friends with Oden. Playmaker who can score. Amazing handles (YouTube video of him controlling two balls like crazy). Very quick. Has improved his outside shot a lot this season from about 33% to 40% while attempting one more shot. Has improved FT% to over 80, not great but decent. Low turnover percentage for a point guard around 15% (Sergio and Nash are 10% higher) while being more aggressive than Blake who has a similar number.

Weaknesses: 6’1’’, but has very good vertical (runs in the family) so he is decent at contesting shots. Still learning how to play good team defense, Lowry was clearly the better defender. Not good at playing the passing lanes for steals. Could still benefit from improving his jump shot so defenses respect him more. Durability is a bit of a concern.

As discussed above it could be Rubio who becomes available if there are open questions regarding his buyout. But if the two GMs don’t screw up, either one could become available. Reportedly the Bucks even wanted to trade Sessions and Alexander for him at some time.

One is 21 and the other is 28

One is also a lot more athletic, thus higher potential. More room to grow. Better penetrator.

He is definitely intriguing, especially if we’re able to get him for not-much…

I just wish we’d seen “more” from him, as a key guy on a bad team (and the chances for numbers and production such a scenario gives you as the PG). He ended the year strong, though (which is why I picked him up for my fantasy team). They are promising numbers from a 21 year old PG, for sure.

I do not know his defense, so I hesitate to get real excited about it. Him being Oden’s best friend is not a selling point to me; lotsa guys got the same agent but they aren’t one of the player’s FATHER. I’d also rather Oden is more open and friend-like with other members of the core, and not just with the one friend— but who knows, it may not be like that at all.

There are probably better players out there, but not the combo of salary relief and young talent that we could offer, probably. I don’t see the trade happening unless we take Jaric and Darko’s contracts off their hands, and probably giving up Bayless, also.

Then, they’d get two young guys they like (assuming they like Jerryd), over $10 million in savings from our cap exception and not having to pay Marko’s last year, and a steady vet to play alongside Rubio and Mayo to hold down the fort. Taken in whole, that’s a pretty enticing deal for a team struggling to break even. Plus, if Heisley wants to make a big splash in 2010, they’ll have an extra $7 million in space without Jaric on the books.

If they do draft Rubio that PG position gets awfully crowded

Right now they have Mike Conley playing the majority of his minutes at PG, with Mayo starting at SG. But they use Mayo a lot like how the Blazers use Roy, specifically they put him in at PG toward the end of a game.

If Memphis does draft Ricky then someone’s minutes are going to go down and out of that group I think going to be Conely. And instead of having a guy you drafted at #4 riding pine, why not trade him for a PF or even another SF that will play. The moment Ricky Rubio’s name gets announced to Memphis, Conley’s value will drop.

But, we’re all undervaluing Trout in this scenario. He’s a solid player at a CHEAP price. We’ve heard so much about saving money, and it just seems like everyone forgot all about those considerations. I think we’re in the best position to offer a combo of talent per dollar.

I like conley

but I don’t remember any serious CP3 comparisons. I remember a general surprise at his selection. Not shock, for sure, but more that he was taken #4 when he was estimated in the 6-10 range.

Conley could be good, though. I think he’s on balance an exciting option for the Blazers. He can hit the 3 at a good clip (40%), he’s fast, he’s a pass-first guy. But he’s smaller than our guys who already can’t fight through screens, and I think the Oden connection is a negative. The potential problems with one of our players dad’s being the agent for two of our top players seems unnecessarily big.

I remember him being expected to go #4 for a long time

Right after Horford, who most said woulda’ been a #1 pick many years.

Some even said he’d challenge for ROY. He got hurt though, so I don’t hold that against him.

Many more expected him to be an instant impact PG, in line (or at least a step below) what CP3 and Deron did for their teams (this is before CP3 became a God at the PG spot). A future allstar.

It could be a combo of Ivaroni not liking him, and injuries… I dunno.

He just didn’t set the league on fire till the end of this last season, and his team’s fans seem okay losing him.

He didn’t help them win many games until recently, and given the expectations, the disappointment fizzled their opinions. It’s like when your girlfriend promises to rub your back, and you get all excited, so you sit down, take your shirt off, get the oil out, turn the phone off and ….. wait while she talks to her friend about how annoying their other best friend is….. until you’re about ready to go to sleep and she gets off the phone but makes you wait until she’s done whining about whining and then finally gets around to rubbing your back for five minutes because she’s too tired. It’s kind of like that. It’s still a back rub (good PG), but the point at which it showed up dropped the excitement enjoyment level.

We might not have to give Bayless up to get Conley Jr...

This could get pretty ridiculous….

It’s not your money, its Paul Allen’s. And we’re not going to be seeing room under the salary cap for another 10+ years, so no reason to worry about it from a team building standpoint either. I’ll take Conley Jr and Oden even though they come with Conley Sr. Doesn’t bother me any, and unless you’re a fan of Paul Allen’s bank account it shouldn’t effect you as a Blazer fan either.

I'm not convinced he'd help Greg

Sometimes it’s not healthy to give the star everything he wants. Yes, Greg has had a lot of success with Conley, but I get the feeling he’d have a lot of success with me running the point. That doesn’t make me a good point guard.

I also don’t want Greg to think that he can ask for whatever he wants and the team delivers. I know that’s not very likely, he has great character and integrity. It just seems a bit nepotistic.

Absolutely!

If there is even a 5% chance (I believe this is more like 75%) that Conley would lead to a happier more comfortable and confident Oden you pull the trigger on that trade as long as you don’t blow up the core of Oden, Roy, LMA, Batum, Pryzbilla, Rudy. Anyone and everyone else is on the table.

yeah

of all the potential Blazers, I’m the most conflicted about Conley, and the most interested. The other guy is Sessions, but his outside shooting scares me off.

I’m impressed by some of his statistical improvements, and of his talent. I think in the right situation he could get better. Maybe in a more controlled (AND efficient) offense like the Blazers he’d really thrive.I am concerned about giving up too much, but maybe the Grizz will sell cheap. Also, i do not like the Oden connection when these two young men are trying to find their own way.

by matthewcc on May 19, 2009 8:19 PM PDT up reply actions

The Oden connection has far more positives than it does negatives...

especially after seeing Oden last year. Getting Conley Jr, and Oden’s love for the game back, would probably go hand in hand. Not that he can’t find it without MC Jr, but it’d be easier with. Now just add in the part where Conley Jr is exactly what we need at the point guard position and it should be a bit of a no-brainer.

okc should ship #3 and green to LAC for #1

a starting line up of sefolsha, westbrook, durant, bg and kristic is pretty good. clips could build around gordon, green, thornton (bleh) and rubio/thabeet. And put davis, zbo, camby kaman on the block.

for the blazers, ship cash for rubio’s buy-out plus segio, outlaw and our #1 for conley. I would even do bayless, our #1, frye (sign and trade) and cash for conley. Conley shoots 3s well, defends quicks guards, decent passer, great change of pace from blake.

Rubio has to pay his own buyout. Teams can only give 500k towards it.

The bigger question mark around him would be if he says “nah, I’ll stay in Spain for another year or two and fulfill my contract” if he doesn’t like the team he would go to. But economically he should come over soon, so his second and third deal come earlier. It’s a risk, but it could pay of for him.

The Clippers and the Sonics swap the #1 and the #3.
The Blazers send Freeland to Memphis and Koponen to whoever wants him.

Reasons to make this trade:
Clippers – they already have players at the 1 and 4, so decide they don’t want Griffin or Rubio (keep in mind that it’s the Clippers, doing the smart thing and taking BPA doesn’t apply for them). They move down in the draft but get three promising , young, cheap players as well as whoever they pick at #3.

Sonics – they get local boy Griffin at #1 as well as a starting 5. They roll out with: Westbrook, Sefolosha, Durant, Griffin, Kaman. Not too shabby. They pick up Jaric’s contract for the trouble, though they get rid of Collison, who is no longer needed, in the process.

Memphis – they get Outlaw, lose Jaric’s contract, and pick up some front court help in Krstic, as well as a prospect PF in Freeland. I still think that if any team said no, it’d be them. Maybe the Blazers send them a 2010 first rounder.

Blazers – they get Conley for reasons already discussed, and get a backup PF and insurance against an injury to Oden or Prz in Collison. The problem is that this leaves the Blazers with only one SF and still 3 PG (including Bayless). Sign Childress to the MLE? Or maybe Rudy as the backup 3, Bayless the backup 2.

Here’s the draft history of the Clippers. Here’s a different one on Wikipedia, so you can look at the player details with one click.

1. Which draft pick was the most successful?
2. Which was the most successful while actually playing for the Clippers?
3. Which one was most derailed by injuries? (There’s an obvious choice, but a few other good ones)
4. Was any of their picks actually a GOOD pick?
5. What was their worst pick?

I’ll go for it:

1. Lamar Odom.
2. Chris Kaman? Benoit Benjamin? I’m not sure.
3. Danny Manning over Shaun Livingston
4. Does not compute.
5. It’s hard to get past the Kandi man.

Would put Portland as the top contender in terms of trading with Memphis. Rubio/Rudy/Gasol, along with Mayo & Gay is a scary offensive unit.

This is dangerous waters, what I am talking about. So we have to get value in return. If we did send Rudy, some advantages include: Not having to give them Bayless & Not having to give our first round pick.

Rudy and Batum have to be off the table (and along with Joel), to go with Roy/LMA/Oden for Conley. Bayless off the bench and Blake would need to be traded or waived to prevent the McMillan security blanket effect. said he wants to let the cake bake and that our team’s window opens in two years. When it comes to personell decisions and long term vs. short term, KP always chooses long term. That team would be so insanely talented they could go to the Finals next year. I’m not saying they will I’m saying with that line up the talent is pouring out of our ears. Blake did us no favors in the playoffs and neither did Outlaw. You have vets in Roy, Rudy (spanish league), and Przybilla.

When I got Ben’s tweet, I immediately screamed “I WANT CONLEY!”

He’s a young point guard who had serious growing pains at first, who adjust to the game and averaged 15-6 post all-star break.

Go get him, KP.

The Blazers desperately need a point guard. Conley will be a very good one.

But who am I to argue with progress. They clearly need Outlaw and we’ll do the trade, straight up, no questions asked.

A few things

Conley: Physical tools wise, he is not far off of Chris Paul in terms of hand & foot quickness, dribble skills & speed.

Playing with OJ Mayo, he knows what it is like to play next to at least good NBA SG. I see him as a good fit next to Roy. Conley has a low usage rate & with his 3pt skills already further along then anyone expected, he can fill the role Blake does. With potential for much more.

Although Mayo, like Roy, CAN play PG

doesn’t mean you want him to. With Rubio, Mayo and Bayless you’re set at the PG and SG spots for all 96 minutes. Gay has you pretty set at SF, throw in Outlaw at the 3 for leftover minutes and the rest at the 4 and you’re doing a lot better than you did this year.

by as11osu on May 19, 2009 10:07 PM PDT up reply actions

Mayo can guard PG's, but I don't think he can be the primary ballhandler

In Mayo’s one year at USC, a few friends and I coined the “Mayo” stat: It’s when a player gets the rebound and no one else touches the ball before it is shot, excluding coast-to-coast dunks/layups.

OJ had at least two in every game.

Trading with Memphis for Mike Conely!

Memphis will pick up Ricky Rubio. Or, Hopefully they will so that Mike Conely becomes an asset for them to leverage…

I say Portland sends Travis Outlaw, Sergio Rodriguez, Steve Blake and Portland’s #24 Pick (and Maybe #55 and #46) to Memphis in exchange for Mike Conely Jr and Darko Milicic’s contract. It works out on RealGM.com Trade Checker, so CBA should jive… Here is what the rosters would look like after the draft and trade….

Memphis:
PG Ricky Rubio®, Sergio Rodriguez
SG OJ Mayo, Steve Blake
SF Rudy Gay, Damion James®
PF Travis Outlaw, Hakeem Warrick, Darrell Arthur
FC Marc Gasol, Hamed Haddaii, BJ Mullens®

Portland:
PG Mike Conely Jr, Jerryd Bayless
SG Brandon Roy, Rudy Fernandez

I just can't see Memphis drafting a PG...

…then trading their other PG for two more PG’s.

I don’t expect them to want both Blake and Sergio. At least with Bayless and Sergio, they’d have someone else who could conceivably play the 2 in time.

More likely though, they’d want Outlaw, one of the PG’s, and something else. Not sure what else we’d give up.

Possibly just $3M + taking on a bad contract would be enough. Memphis isn’t purely about winning.

I've talked to a lot of Rockets fans since the playoffs

I’m in a GM league on a different board, and let me tell you, Outlaw got noticed in the playoffs. He sure did. And the Rockets more than anyone now know to stay away.

I still like Leon Powe. Especially if he comes at an injury discount price. He doesn’t rely to heavily on his athleticism. With him and Przybilla on that second unit we’d have one of the best offensive and one of the best defensive rebounders on the court at the same time. With our second unit being filled with 3 point specialists I’m all for having a great offensive rebounder at that spot. After Blair and a couple others Powe is certainly in the top 10, if not the top 5.

In my opinion you keep our nucleus of 6 (Roy, LMA, Oden, Rudy, Batum, Przybilla) and you offer them a 3-4 player/pick package while taking back a bad contract. So long as you come out of the deal 2 deep at every position (backup PF will come via draft or FA) you’re set.

I think Hinrich's a great fit

He gives us 3-4 years of excellent play, meanwhile we can keep Bayless as his backup, and hope he develops into a capable NBA point by the time Hinrich is no longer a starting caliber PG. If Bayless beats Hinrich out during that time, fine.

I think Conley clearly has more to offer in the rest of his career than Hinrich, but I still like the idea of getting Kirk on the Blazers.

by jksnake99 on May 20, 2009 2:35 PM PDT up reply actions

It would be an inferior move.

Conley Jr is at Hinrich’s level right now and is getting better. Remember when we tried to get Harris? That’s where Conley Jr is in his development right now. He’s ready to go off. He’d be a perfect fit on this team in every regard. He also fits our window. We don’t have to wish and hope and prey that at some point Bayless gets it. If it happens great, but having MC Jr already playing our future wouldn’t rely on that possibility.

the ultimate wild card

The thing about Wallace is that from day one I’ve heard that he’s in love with Rubio. It seems he’s going to have a shot to get him, which will require Conley Jr moving. It also probably will require someone like Steve Blake to help them make the transition. We have that part they’ll need. They’ve always liked Outlaw, we’ve got that part as well. After that it’ll just be a matter of whetting their lips a bit. Offing bad contracts, giving them picks, possibly one final puzzle piece.

I’m sure KP will have his ear. The funny part at this point is that signing Miles might end up coming back to haunt him. Imagine all that extra space we’d have to take all their bad contracts if they hadn’t made that signing. We could have taken Jaric, Milicic and Buckner off their hands. Anyways… too much sense. KP is able to talk GM’s into making moves that make no sense happen, imagine when he has logic behind him in addition to that silver tongue of his.

The Crystal Ball

1. The Clippers pick Blake Griffin.

Unfortunately, since he’s not terrible it means he gets injured, breaking something major or blowing out his knee within 3 years. Sorry Blake, it’s a Clippers thing.

2. Memphis picks Rubio, but trades him to someone else.

Mostly because his contract situation is sticky and remains so through draft day. The someone else is not us, Wallace didn’t care for us before the letter, and that didn’t help.

3. We try to move up in the draft to get a viable long-term point guard.

Sergio and Frye (S&T) are available, Outlaw maybe, Blake not. I think if we’re able to swing something it’s with an eastern conference team. No one in the west wants to help us, even if it would mean helping themselves.

While it’d be nice to land Conley for our loose change, I’d put the odds at 20:1 against.

His buyout is pretty substantial, and Rubio has to pay it himself. I think I even read its in the 7 million dollar range.

there is a big dispute, because he’s only making 80K a year. They will appeal the government and try to claim that a 7 million buyout is excessive for an 80K per year job… rumor is Joventut may just decrease the buyout to avoid the bad publicity.

That's my wonderment as well

WHY do they supposedly want Outlaw, when they got Warrick and Gay, both very Outlaw-esque for better or worse?

I mean, if they really crave to get their team-holes filled with some Trout, that’s cool with me, we’ll take a young PG and some bad deals (Jaric, keep your too-close-together-eyes over there please), and call it a day.

We’ll even wipe our hands clean, like we did some actual work.

Gay is very athletic and CAPABLE of being a lot of things

But, thus far, he has shown no effort for defense (yeah, he could learn it, but he doesn’t even seem to try), takes too many bad shots and doesn’t fully utilize his athleticism, and generally gives poor effort for a leader of a team.

Trout has bad lateral quickness, which hurts him on defense, I agree. Gay is DEFINITELY a better player than Trout, but he isn’t worth what it would take to get him and he is overrated by a lot of fans who think he’s on the verge of being a star.

Gay seems like a guy who was gifted all the tools to be an awesome player, but never put it together because of effort.

At one time Chris Wallace likened or at least tried to liken his team to the Suns

that’s why they went after Conley Jr in the first place. A fast guy that makes great decisions on his feet. They probably envisioned Outlaw as the PF who could shoot the 3 ball Marion style, and be a havoc on offense, as he has been versus opposing 4’s.

I’m not sure based on what I’ve seen from the team as a whole that even realize that defense plays a role in who wins and who loses. Gay is one of the worst defenders in the league, and he shouldn’t be. Mayo was a great defender before getting there, and he doesn’t seem to play much D anymore either.

Anyways, Rubio is even more quintessential to that style of game, which is why Wallace loves him so much. If he still likes Outlaw which is still likely, and he sees something in Webster or Blake or Bayless, this thing can happen.

Conley Jr is that something great

a franchise point guard. I doubt we’d have to give them that much. It’s possible they’d like Channing Frye. The way I see it, they’ll be picking from these options.

Jerryd Bayless
Travis Outlaw
Steve Blake
Martell Webster
Sergio Rodriguez
Channing Frye
#24, #32, #38, #55, #56
7 Million in Cap Space

They can pick 3-5 things depending on value. The way I see it, getting Conley Jr without giving up one of your 6 best players is money in the bank. As long as we have enough parts left to finish out our PF backup spot, we should be A okay.

I don't think you know who you're talking about

Conley Jr didn’t constantly have the ball in his hands. Mayo took control of the ball early and often. Also, Conley Jr played pretty decently versus us this year. His splits versus us were 12 points per game with 6 assists and 4 rebounds on average. He shot 45% from the floor against us and 55% from 3.

Collison is the guy you'd have to take at #24

No way does he fall past all those playoff teams looking for contributors right away picking 25-30. I think scoring Collison at #24 is pretty money. The point guard position is stacked this year. Should help keep Conley Jr’s price down for us because everyone should be able to get one in the draft, meaning we get the exact one we want at a price we can afford.

I would try to keep Blake

As a playoff team who expects to make the 2nd round and beyond, we need a solid, dependable, veteran presence to give us something we can expect night in and night out at the PG spot.

I’d rather have Blakey as the backup, if Conley can beat him out.

Finding a good backup vet PG who isn’t a journeyman for a reason is kinda tough, but they exist. None pop into my head that is as good as Blake, though.

Morty

by Mortimer on May 20, 2009 12:04 AM PDT up reply actions

Are you talking about the Anthony Johnson variety?

Because I’d be all for someone like him coming aboard. I also think a guy like Darren Collison would be fine. Although he would be a rookie, he’s an excellent big game defender that can shoot from distance, plays smart and is happy not being the focal point of a team. I think he’s pretty much a quicker version of Anthony Johnson actually. the key is someone that plays really good defense, not necessarily a vet IMO.

by as11osu on May 20, 2009 12:08 AM PDT up reply actions

I just don't trust any rookie, really

On the defensive end, at least.

There is too much to learn, and we got so many young players still developing, I am much more in favor of a Blake type over a guy who may become better than Blake in 3 years as the backup.

I don’t think we can afford a rookie PG to back up Conley, when Conley himself is still going to be learning the league and how to be a PG. Anthony Johnson is fine too, but I’d rather have Blake.

I don’t think a deal with Memphis would hinge on Blake, since he would hardly play for them and while they “need” vet guidance, they need to develop their youth more and they won’t be worrying about winning. A team like us is different, and will play Blake over development.

And if Conley is as good as most think, he will beat out Blake. Nate doesn’t play favorites like that, he usually starts the right guy OR who we need to develop. Oden over Joel, is one example, and so is how quickly he made Blake the starter over Jack, who most felt like was a personal favorite of Nate.

Blake knows WHAT to do on defense

He just isn’t capable of it all, athletically. He’s not a bad defender though.

Just very prone to be abused by very quick PGs. As a backup, this isn’t a problem, and his veteran guile will give any young buck trouble in practice.

I would be confused if they did start Blake over develop Rubio

Though who knows…

But, I would imagine that development is priority #1, and not winning, for a team like Memphis, and I would agree with doing that. I’d expect them to just play Rubio, Gay, Mayo, Gasol as many minutes as they can and not expect much wins but a lot of experience gained.

Blake is a guy that playoff teams want, but probably not a developing, young team. They would take him if they had to, but I wouldn’t think they’d seek him out.

Blake means a lot more to a team like us, than to a team like Memphis, even if he made their team better… being actually better isn’t what they want, unless it comes from their core. A few more wins at this stage just costs them ping pong balls next lottery.

I would hope Conley can become our guy who can defend PGs

You can count on Blake not to make out n’ out defensive mistakes, like Bayless or Sergio would, because of their inexperience, and any young project PG would make a load of mistakes and we wouldn’t have the patience to develop him.

Blake will be 30, but he’ll have more than a few years left in him as a backup, barring injury. He won’t need to be an elite defender if Conley can defend PGs. He just has to be able to take care of the ball, hit open shots, get us in our offense… all that he does now— but in less minutes and against the 2nd unit.

After Blake, I imagine we’ll just get another veteran PG, over developing another young one. If Conley is the franchise PG, I mean. We’ll likely always have a solid, veteran, DEPENDABLE backup PG.

Anthony Johnsons and Steve Blakes, not Taurean Greens and Sergios. Guys who play the same game every night, even if a great game from Sergio can be better every once in a while.

OT on Bayless

I think he probably has a great future, but one thing that scares me about him from an “investment” perspective is short arms and small hands.

My analogy would be Daunte Culpepper playing QB for the Vikings. The guy was great but he had no handle because he had small hands even though he was 6-5 or whatever and 265 lbs. He fumbled all the time.

When I’ve watched Bayless’ ball handling it has frequently looked a little shaky and I attribute it to this. Hopefully he’ll be Chancey Rex though – for Portland.

If Blake is your backup

I’d still want a Darren Collison type defender sitting there at #3 on the depth chart.

You don’t want Blake getting abused in there by (if it were the Rockets again) Lowry, or whomever else’s point guard you throw in there (Farmar etc). Most teams have legit and quick backup point guards. Give me Collison as a just in case option, because I have just as much trouble watching Blake in there getting destroyed as I would watching an occasional bonehead play by a rook.

by as11osu on May 20, 2009 12:38 AM PDT up reply actions

I'd always be fine with a 3rd string project

I just don’t imagine they’d play much, and if Blake is being destroyed by a quick backup PG, the damage will be minimized greatly as long as Conley is a good defender.

Most backup PGs aren’t very good, and Blake would rate pretty highly. His problems with quick PGs would be greatly reduced if Conley is playing most of the minutes against them, and Blake’s other plusses would usually negate the problem with quickness.

We didn’t lose many games because of it, and I don’t expect many 2nd unit PGs to beat us either.

I am totally fine with a Collison type, someone who can become a great defender off the bench.

…I remember Steve’s playoff performance in Denver as being similar to this year with Portland.

At one point this year, M&M mentioned that Steve asked to no longer shoot technical FT’s. Brandon and Rudy took the task over. (It was hinted the Orlando game left him shaken)

That’s disconcerting. Usually, you don’t want a player who asks not to take shots. At least not as a starter or a clutch player.

But at least it showed he knew his limitations.

Goodness, I would hope Conley is a bit better than Sergio

Sergio would not get major minutes for any team in the league… if we expect Conley to be a franchise PG, he can beat out a solid vet.

Blake would be a Joel-esque, best-back-up-at-his-position type player.

What happened to Sergio, is that he isn’t very good at basketball, or at being a PG. He is good at passing. Conley is more than that.

If they fell to 17th in pace, Hollins had to have slowed it down.

It is surprising they played so slow though, with a team that young and the athletes they got. Who they think they are, the Blazers?!?!

I bet a possession only counts as a possession of all 5 players make it all the way and back down court

Marc Gasol only crossed halfcourt 6 times a game, giving the Grizzlettes 6 possessions a game, making them 29th in pace, just one possession faster than our 5 possessions a game.

it is a bit surprising with them

they are significantly more athletic than we are.

by jksnake99 on May 20, 2009 1:10 AM PDT up reply actions

I dunno

Gay a little more athletic than LMA, but LMA is purty athletic in his way.

Roy is more athletic than Mayo.

Joel is pretty athletic for a 7+ white stiff, and so is Gasol, but I’d give the edge to Joel as far as mobility and leaping goes.

Outlaw and Warrick are pretty even.

Conley and Lowry beat Blake, obviously.

Batum, Bayless, very athletic.

I’d say for how athletic we are, we play too slow, but the results are tough to argue against. I think we should speed up quite a bit though. Will give LMA an extra rebound or two, and make him a DOUBLE DOUBLE man without him actually improving!

Memphis is more raw than us, but I don’t think they’re as athletic in their starters or their backups… and their backups really weigh them down in the athleticality race.

by Mortimer on May 20, 2009 1:17 AM PDT up reply actions

the way I see it, we have 4 players with very above average athleticism-- Bayless, Batum, Outlaw, Aldridge

I guess you have to put Roy in there also, but I hesitate to do so since he rarely displays his athleticism. Bayless barely played and Batum didn’t play more than 20 mpg.

The Grizz have Conley, Mayo, Gay, Warrick who all play major minutes and are very athletic. Arthur and Darko are pretty athletic also.

I guess I shouldn’t say they are significantly more athletic than we are, but I do think they are more athletic. I constantly raise my eyebrows a bit when people describe the Blazers as a “very athletic” team. In my book, Portland is about average athletically by NBA standards. If Bayless starts playing major minutes and Oden returns to Ohio State form, I might change my mind.

by jksnake99 on May 20, 2009 1:23 AM PDT up reply actions

Whatta ya think of Darko as a backup PF/C?

I’ve loved the idea for a while and think he’d be perfect in that sort of scenario, because of his rebounding, shot blocking, and toughness.

He’d probably annoy a lot of teammates because he’s a hot head, but I don’t mind.

by Mortimer on May 20, 2009 1:29 AM PDT up reply actions

Darko is still way young

He could have a rebirth similar or better than Joel did with the Blazers.

Joel was almost out of the league when we signed him… Darko isn’t worth the #2 pick in such a historic draft, but he’s certainly good at what he does as a role player.

He ain’t Kwame, dats for sure.

Joel will be on the wrong side of 30 soon, plus having a 3rd guy who can play both big man positions as well as many starters would be a great luxury.

I just wouldn’t count Darko as taking a bad contract, but I’d be happy if Memphis would.

Plus, he is number 31, which is my lucky number.

Conley

Did much better when Hollins trusted him to call the plays himself, rather then having to look over at the bench. Like Blake with Nate.

But from what I have heard he is comfortable with either. I know they ran a lot of half court sets at Ohio State. He may be a positive for our team on the fast break, seeing as Brandon does not like to run it very much at all.

Does Nate prefer to play above the rim with Alley Oops, rather then fast break? Seemed to give Rudy & Sergio some good freedom in that regard. I know he had first hand experience, watching Payton & Kemp. At NCState, he was a year off from the famous alley oop game, he could have seen it though. Anyone know if McMillan was throwing oops back in college?

The package for Conley...

It sure seems to me that this thread is all about what we want to give up for Conley. Of course we would give up Outlaw (failed at sf and not what we want at pf but maybe he’ll work on your roster) and Bayless (lots of potential and not much actual success on the court) to get Conley who showed signs of being a solid franchise pg when given the reins in the 2nd half of last season. And we can make a case that Memphis may end up accepting that offer…

BUT it’s not what they are gonna come asking for. If the plan is to draft Rubio to pair with Gasol, they are gonna come asking for Rudy. But they already have Mayo!!! Well, we already have Roy and we value Rudy pretty highly.

If I’m Memphis and you refuse to include your backup sg in a package to get my starting pg… I tell you to go pound sand.

by 52therim on May 20, 2009 1:10 AM PDT reply actions

I think an added thing in our favor

Is our willingness to eat dirty nasty contracts that others won’t eat, especially in this economic climate.

We’d go into the talks with Rudy off the table, and if they can’t get past it, they’re paying Jaric until 2020.

by Mortimer on May 20, 2009 1:14 AM PDT up reply actions

I'd give up Rudy for Conley

I like Rudy but I’m not as sold on him as most Blazers fans. Yeah, he is great off-ball and from the three (especially as a “rookie”) but I’d give him up for Conley.

That still leaves a very lopsided roster to deal with. If it works, I’d rather send them Outlaw/Frye/Sergio(ad picks?) for Conley/Darko. Not sure it the numbers work but Memphis gets some size, contract flexibility, and another Spainard.

by jksnake99 on May 20, 2009 1:16 AM PDT up reply actions

I think you are right

but I so badly don’t want to go into next season without an upgrade at pg. It might make sense to make a deal that is somewhat unfair based on talent, but still improves the team.

by 52therim on May 20, 2009 1:22 AM PDT up reply actions

We need a PG upgrade

But Rudy is too special and versatile a talent to trade away, except for a surefire piece.

I don’t even think he should be a rookie in quotes, since he’s only 24, which used to be a normal rookie age. The adjustment from Euro to NBA player is even tougher for a dude like him, who went from being one of the most athletic guys in the league to one of the least athletic at his position. That’s tough to do, and adjust to the size, strength, and length.

He had experience and veteran guile, but in many ways he had to undergo a tougher adjustment period than normal, American rookies do.

by Mortimer on May 20, 2009 1:20 AM PDT up reply actions

Hmm, I dunno! I guess it just depends

Both Rudy and Batum seem to have better fundamentals than many similar players their age, except for Rudy’s bad dribbling.

They seem more aware of how to play team basketball, which makes them more capable of coming into a new team and fitting in right away.

Hard to ignore the fundamentals and high-level professional experience of Euroleague

I’m not sure most 4-year rookies really bring that much extra defense to the table in the first few years.

Odds are a star Euroleague player has experience with a clutch role on championship runs as well. Much less likely for a 4-year NCAA player, the majority never get near the finals.

by Timmay! on May 20, 2009 1:33 AM PDT up reply actions

a big time program makes four conferance tournys

and four big dance appearances. But I think its a tough call. The thing about the euro league players is we are getting the cream of the crop while everyone that plays D1 ball that is any good at least takes a shot at the draft

by svlittle on May 20, 2009 1:38 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, but there are a lot of big conference players who never get past the sweet 16 in 4 years

But you’re right, that’s a tough call in its own way.

You’re correct that we only get the best Euro players right now, and we basically get everyone from D1. That’s one of the reasons I lean toward a Euro player. A lot of the weeding will have been done before anyone declares for a draft.

In reality, if you’ve got a 4-year big-conf player and a 4-year well-regarded Euro, you go with your scouting report. If that comes out equal, you go with your need. If they’re both the same, I’d go with the Euro, because I’d expect better fundamentals.

Totally a judgment call of course.

by Timmay! on May 20, 2009 1:42 AM PDT up reply actions

I appreciate him going the the NBA rookie curve

and I probably used the quotations frivolously. And it may be all because I get tired of the Rudy can do no wrong theme that is prevalent. Don’t be me wrong – I like him a lot – but we need a real PG more than anything else.

The Rudy for Conley trade doesn’t work straight up anyway due to salaries. We’d have to kick more in which would just make it more lopsided.

Rudy has real flaws

But the general things that go against most rookies (adapting to NBA athletes) is tougher on him, who didn’t grow up playing against other elite NBA athletes.

He certainly isn’t perfect and I’m sure many of us way overrate him. I remember people here saying he’d be better than Roy, even.

He can’t dribble like a SG, can’t get his own shot (he could in Spain, but can’t here, which removes a big part of his game), and is small. But, his off the ball game and passing ability, not to mention his great shooting, will always be needed on a team like ours.

but literally, Conley would be it. You don’t let go of Rudy for Conley Jr, they’re both at about the same level. You can tempt Memphis with 3 or 4 players plus cap space plus a pick, and improve our team by getting an additional B+ player for a bunch of B- guys. That is essentially the goal of this offseason. Get a B+ player at our greatest position of need (PG), without giving up one of our nucleus of 6 (Roy, Aldridge, Oden, Rudy, Batum, Przybilla).

Hinrich only fits about 2 years of our window

He’s going to be 29 by the playoffs next year and he’s not going to be that defender a lot of people think of, especially against the quicker point guards in this league. While Conley Jr isn’t as solid a defender, he specializes versus that type of point guard because of how quick he is. He’s also a much better offensive player than Hinrich is and can penetrate and dish at a much higher level than Hinrich can. Oh ya… he’s also 7 years younger with a better contract, is tight with GO which can only help him and fits almost perfectly into our offense. He even would allow us to play at a faster pace if we so chose. There isn’t a plotter among them after Oden would lose some pounds (Conley, Roy, Batum, Aldridge, Oden) may be the most athletic 5 in the league.

Darko wants to go to Europe.

link.

The Blazers could take him in a salary dump and then maybe negotiate a buyout. I’m not sure if I want that guy in the locker room and I bet the Grizzlies don’t either. No other team in the league could afford to take him and that seems like a huge bargaining chip for us to use. Give us Conley and we’ll take Darko.

His main attributes are grit and victorious spirit, and he explained to me that he has lost that since he played in team which is not among the best in NBA. Milicic wants to re-gain that spirit by playing in Europe. He’s still in doubt whether or not to return. Also, he’s got a wedding coming up, on May 23, and after that he’ll become a father. He wouldn’t be fully concentrated on the national team… This isn’t the first time Darko has hinted at his desire to return to Europe to play. Twice this season alone Darko has made comments to the press about wanting to return to Europe when his contract was up.

Griffin, who led the nation in double-doubles last season, could have had an up-close-and-personal look at the Clippers in April. On the same night he received the Wooden Award in Los Angeles as the college basketball player of the year, the Clippers were playing Sacramento a few miles away, fighting for better lottery odds.

The Kings lost that night. But it hardly mattered, as it turned out.

Joel Freeland is a better player than Tyler Hansbrough right now.

by jksnake99 on May 20, 2009 1:02 PM PDT up reply actions

Do we KNOW that though?

Since Freeland plays in a wacky league and we all haven’t seen much of him…

I ain’t saying you’re wrong, I’m just saying I dunno how we can realistically say that.

I like how Freeland moves, though. I haven’t watched much Hans “off my” Brough.

/m

by Mortimer on May 20, 2009 1:04 PM PDT up reply actions

Freeland is 2 inches taller, much more athletic and has an ACB PER nearly as high as Hansbrough's NCAA PER

and the ACB is a way stronger league than the NCAA. Moreover, when Tyler Hansbrough faced top competition he struggled. In their tournament game against Oklahoma, Blake Griffin dominated despite facing double teams while Hansbrough faced single coverage from Blake’s brother Taylor most of the game and was pretty much silent.

I much prefer Freeland as a backup/emergency 4/5 over Hansbrough, who’s weak rebounding numbers are artificially inflated by UNC’s fast pace.

by jksnake99 on May 20, 2009 1:10 PM PDT up reply actions

Blake Griffin is a #1 draft pick

You don’t draft a guy at the 24th pick and expect him to beat the #1 pick. I prefer Hansbrough’s competitive spirit over some guy I’ve only seen in summer league and in clips on the internet. Hansbrough has heart and is worth paying $1,120,200 for the 24th pick. Heck, you could actually have both on the roster.

All I’m saying, is that drafting Hansbrough with the 24th pick hardly seems like a huge risk or a mistake.

you mis-read part of my post

Hasnbrough couldn’t even outplay Taylor Griffin. I don’t think taking Hansbrough at #24 would be a disaster, but I think I would prefer to trade up for someone like Blair, trade out as part of a deal to get a PG, or stash a prospect in Europe who might someday be able to play a major role, instead of maybe (but maybe not) be an upgrade over Frye.

by jksnake99 on May 20, 2009 4:42 PM PDT up reply actions

by tominhawaii on May 20, 2009 11:58 PM PDT up reply actions

I think he's a fine pick at the end of the first round, I just don't see him as a guy you target and trade up for

He has shown very little improvement over his 4 years, can be defended 1v1 by NBA athletes and is not a very good rebounder once you adjust for pace (something you always have to do when evaluating UNC players). His best asset is his scoring ability and I believe that asset will be limited to a substantial degree by NBA athletes.

If KP drafts him, fine, but I wouldn’t give up anything more than a 2nd round pick to move up and get him. I think Joel Freeland can give us more next year.

The stats I use are pretty good at evaluating NBA players, but they are much less reliable when projecting translation from Europe or College to the NBA. I’d need a much better stat database to be even decent at that.

by jksnake99 on May 20, 2009 3:59 PM PDT up reply actions

Snap

I read this after my reply above. I don’t think Hansbrough is worth moving into the lottery to draft, but I could handle a move up to about 18-20. I think the Blazers would have to give up too much to move much higher than that for Hansbrough. I don’t want him that bad.

"Better to reign in hell than serve in heaven." - John Milton

by tominhawaii on May 20, 2009 4:40 PM PDT up reply actions

One reason I don’t want Hansbrough is the “big school” effect. A lot of times, the championship players have a boosted value after winning the title, making them go a few spots higher than they actually should… that’s not good value. I think Mateen Cleaves…

1. Rubio will stay in Spain unless he gets a situation he likes. Why would he come here to play in Oklahoma? To name one really bad outcome, as an example.
2. Chad Ford was high when he said OKC takes Rubio. No way, in this lifetime or the next.
3. At least one of the top three picks will be traded. Maybe all three.

Mortimer asked what Conley's weaknesses are. Here is a brief assessment from 3 Shades of Blue today
1. Mike Conley. Got one vote for most improved. Has a shaky shot (yes still, you can argue all you want otherwise). Has confidence problems. Is quick as lightning. Can make great, heady passes, even if no one on the team can make the shot after the pass. Doesn’t turn the ball over too much. Loves to dribble. Alot. In fact, the over-dribbling kills the offense. Is in a secret romantic affair with Ron Tillery and coach idiot Lionel Hollins.

Where is fatty when you need him?

Conley fanboys hyperventilating over him like 12 year old girls over the Jonas Brothers.
Conley is an OK pg so far. Not great, not bad, OK. He sucked his rookie year due to several issues (and was stuck in a 3 guard rotation), but looks to turn out decent and maybe even good.

Bayless also did not produce incredibly well his rookie year with guards in front of him. However, he produced better in college than Conley did and projects to produce better in the NBA once he finishes adjusting.

Sure, right this minute, Conley is a better NBA PG, by the end of next season, that may well not be the case. It honestly wouldn’t take much for Bayless to reach “conley levels.”

Come on people (you know who you are) Conley ain’t Chris Paul, why so gaga over mediocre production from a 2nd (3rd now) year prospect that had a bad rookie year on a bad team and then so down on a guy who had trouble getting minutes on the 5th best team in the league?

Conley is leaps and bounds closer to CP3 than Bayless as a basketball player

Also, it seems like the pot calling the kettle black with your love for Bayless (fanboy?). Conley Jr has already been what we’d need him to be here. His 16/6/4/2 stat line after the all-star break along with his 46/44/84 percentage marks which would be big steps up immediately for this team. Bayless is so far behind MC Jr on the learning curve and I’d even say the talent curve. Those things that you can’t teach like BBIQ and passing are a major plus for Conley Jr. while they’re a complete unknown for Bayless. Conley Jr unlike Bayless was actually a teams PG in college. Though he didn’t have the points anyone that watched Ohio State knows he was the catalyst behind them getting to the NC game. Bayless didn’t take his team anywhere and its not like that team didn’t have talent on it (Wise/Hill/Budinger).

by as11osu on May 20, 2009 7:15 PM PDT up reply actions

Conley was better than Bayless at college

but it´s hard to compare because Arizona was exceptionally bad and Ohio pretty good.

well, the supporting casts weren't terribly different

Obviously Greg was much better than Hill, but Budinger and Wise would probably be considered substantial upgrades over Cook and Lewis. None of the rest of either team would have been considered anything to write home about, though.
