Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

"Portland, Golden State, Toronto, New York and Houston are five teams we know of that are either readying or contemplating bids for Nash, with the Blazers listed first not only because of their interest in a push-the-pace veteran leader but because they could furnish Phoenix will multiple youngsters -- Jerryd Bayless and Travis Outlaw, just to name two for starters -- if the Suns decide they want to start over."

(Speaking on Kidd) "But I've been advised that Portland -- with a decent amount of cap space to burn this summer and a presumed desire to upgrade at the point with someone who can push the pace and give some veteran guidance to all that promising youth -- has to be on the list as well."

Nash

will be 36 next season I think and Kidd is right there also. Does Portland really give up on Bayless for a player with maybe 2-3 seasons left in the tank.

I think this is agent talk nothing more.

I try to help with everything," Fernandez said. "If the coach says go rebound, I go rebound. I work for the team.

""If I'm playing this game to get media and attention, I shouldn't be here," Aldridge said. "I'm here to play basketball, and do what I can do to help this team win."

His stare became blank. It was apparent he was back in that place, on the Rose Garden's logo, picking up Aaron Brooks as the crowd nervously roared.

Totally!

The article makes it seem preposturous that the Suns would think about trading him. Even saying that they want to offer him a multi-year deal….and that they couldn’t face “rebuilding” without him. Are they really looking to rebuild w/ a 36 yr old?
I’m not so sure.

I didn't mean to turn you on

lol...

I think that this is called a press release not an article.

by Escrote on May 18, 2009 3:00 PM PDT up reply actions

More likely would be Sergio + Outlaw

Although I don’t see why Nate would like the way Nash runs an offense any more than he would like how Sergio runs it. Obviously Nash is a waaay better shooter, but he’s still a high risk high reward guy and Nate seems to prefer low/low.

by Zaig on May 18, 2009 1:07 PM PDT reply actions

Too bad there isn't that many of them :-)

Especially among PGs. Westbrook, Wade, Nash, James, and Howard. Outside of Westbrook, you have 4 awesome players leading the league in turnovers. Naturally they all handle the ball more than most guys do, but still, high risk high reward.

Roy is just a godly fluke, as Blaz06Draft showed in his fanpost.

nates actions dont always match his words

2 years ago i could have recalled that nate said he’d gladly push the pace if nash was on the team…granted i think it’ll be a failed experiment, unless nate adapts.

I'd take either one of them for the next 1-2 seasons

providing the price is right. I’m ok giving up Bayless IF we land another young PG in the draft.

How did you guys win that?

Haha

Bayless + Sergio + Outlaw for Nash + Drafted PG.

Let Bayless and Sergio battle it out in Phoenix for PT!

I still think that Kirk

is the best long term solution, but I´d love to see what Nash would do here.
LMA would be an All Star, for sure.

Nash will bolt after 09-10 season (Free Agency)

D’Antoni will be calling him to work in NYC (his off season home). It’s a great idea to bring him to PDX, but it won’t last. We’d do it, but not if we have to mortgage too much of our young talent.

by kobisportsguy on May 18, 2009 1:33 PM PDT up reply actions

It's a cool rumor

It seems kind of made up to me though. I should read like this, “Portland, Golden State, Toronto, New York and Houston are five teams we know of that are either readying or contemplating bids for Nash, with the Blazers listed first, alphabetically.”

I doubt KP goes down a list of every player in the league and says “Would I trade or not trade for that guy?” KP would have to do his due diligence and “contemplate” any trade or free agent signing, with the available players. Sometimes he might only contemplate for a second, and other times, he might have to say, “I’ll get back to you.”

Half way through next season, someone is going to complain about KP turning down a deal for Nash in the off season, and it will be fueled by the speculation that will follow this rumor.

No No No!!!!

Why give up young players for a guy (albeit a veteran) who is 10+ years older than the rest of your team and on the down slide of his career with a HUGE contract??!! Neither Kidd nor Nash can defend the younger PGs in the leagues. Seriously, for that amount of money the Blazers won’t be getting much of an upgrade.

by jenstcy on May 18, 2009 1:45 PM PDT reply actions

its a huge upgrade

it may not be the perfect fit…and it may not last long, but to say that nash doesnt provide more than blake is plain wrong. nash doesn’t need to be in our long term plans to be successful. nash could run the team for a few years while bayless grows into his starter role…hell bayless could end up being a barbosa off the bench.

keep in mind i’m skeptical that this would work, but nash>blake by far.

I am firmly against either one on the Blazers. Kidd at least wouldn't require a trade.

And everything Kerr says point to Nash staying in Phoenix until at least 2010, and everything Cuban and Kidd say point to Kidd returning to Dallas.

by Norsktroll on May 18, 2009 1:49 PM PDT reply actions

That said, wasn't it Cuban who flat-out denied going after Kidd while going after Kidd?

That said, I wouldn’t be willing to pay what Kidd wants to have him here. Not that I wouldn’t mind having him here, but not at the price he would certainly cost.

Of all the things that can be expressed in the printed word – love, hate, fear, joy – true humor is the one that is the most difficult of all. Sarcasm, for example, is an art of delicate subtlety. Yet too many people wield it as a bulldozer – loud, smelly, ugly, and destructive – and think they are being funny.

by thomasikehara on May 18, 2009 1:50 PM PDT reply actions

If Bibby plays PG for Portland

It signals the team has “given up” on improving the perimeter defense

(i.e. not likely)

by two4larue on May 18, 2009 2:44 PM PDT up reply actions

Is Nash a better defender then Bibby????

Give me a break at least he has a little left in the tank.

by We-B-Dunkin on May 18, 2009 6:14 PM PDT up reply actions

Nash doesn't make sense for Portland.

I can see Kidd, though. I’m not on board with paying him $22M, though.

maybe nash would accept a bench role with the second unit

while kirk runs the starting unit.

"Yeah, but Portland definitely is not one of them."

by Escrote on May 18, 2009 3:03 PM PDT up reply actions

Or maybe...

Just maybe perhaps we could trade most of our team for these veterans.

We could get guys like Grant Hill, Steve Nash, Shaq, Richardson.

"The Edge... there is no honest way to explain it because the only people who really know where it is are the ones who have gone over. The others-the living-are those who pushed their control as far as they felt they could handle it, and then pulled back, or slowed down, or did whatever they had to when it came time to choose between Now and Later."

What does Ben Stein know about basketball?

Just kidding. As much as I like Nash and would love to see more fast breaks, why would the Blazers trade up and coming players like Bayless for him? This is not going to happen. Were building a dynasty as they say.

If you could get Kidd on a one or two year deal with your cap space

why wouldn’t you?

It seems to me that if Bayless develops it’s still a multiyear project. Getting Kidd as a FA could help his development. Not interested in a trade for vets at the end of their career.

by raoulduke on May 18, 2009 4:41 PM PDT reply actions

Why woundn't you?

Because this is the last chance the Blazers have space under the cap, they need to sign or make a lopsider trade to get player(s) that can help for years to come instead of renting a player for a year or two.

by Sungari on May 18, 2009 7:01 PM PDT up reply actions

LMA, Oden, Batum and maybe Bayless are the players that will help them for years to come

what those guys need is development. Kidd could teach Bayless how an offense is supposed to work. I’m not a big supporter of the idea of signing Kidd, but it wouldn’t bum me out.Trading for Nash would.

by raoulduke on May 18, 2009 7:33 PM PDT up reply actions

"readying or contemplating" --- "has to be on the list" (in his opinion)

Hardly sounds like we’re front runners. But I would welcome either of them for two-three years (or however long they can contribute) as long as they agree to help develop Bayless. And I’m not even anywhere near cemented in Bayless’ camp, but that could be interesting and give us a head start toward our championship. Especially if they can turn Bayless into a younger version of themselves (with a better jump-shot and mad hops) to replace them when they retire.

Somebody wake me when a local reporter with some actual Portland sources...

starts talking about trades like this. Somebody in the Phoenix front office probably said something like “These are the teams we’re targeting if we decide to trade Nash…”. And then it was taken out of context.
