junk drawer: athleticismness 5/18
so a few weeks ago I had a conversation with a few people on here as to what teams are athletic teams. I thought the blazers are an above average athletic team but others didn't agree with me. Then I got to thinking about what makes someone athletic and to be honest I can't come up with a definite answer to that. If I had to choose what makes someone a great athlete I would have to say number one its leaping ability, followed quickly by speed.
For instance: Travis is thought of as a great athlete because of his insane leaping ability and i can't think of another reason, but I also think Aaron brooks is a great athlete because of his speed and agility. I also think bayless is a good athlete because he got mad hops and his strength has to play into it as well
So I am posing the question what do you all think makes a great athlete?

there is no one word to describe it
it also changes depending on your size.
LMA is considered extremely athletic because he is the fastest PF in the league. Outlaw is considered extremely athletic because he has mad hops Bayless is considered extremely athletic because he is extremely quick, extremely strong, and he has mad hops. However, many people don’t think that Roy is athletic because he plays at a different pace, even though he has great hops. As you can see, the smaller you are, there are more attributes you need in order to be called “athletic”.
We also had a discussion about athleticism on OLive yesterday. One guy said that “athletic” was euphemism for “dumb”. Although I disagree with that (I think this team is both very athletic and very smart), I can’t help but notice that Roy is considered by many to be “unathletic” (even though he is quite the opposite, IMO) and he is one of the smartest players in the NBA, at least when it comes to Basketball IQ. It seems to me that the more “cerebral” you play, the less athletic you are considered to be.
Side note, I love “quotation marks,” I think they make me look smart lol

FRYE UNRESTRICTED FREE AGENT QUESTION (STORYTELLER)
Can the blazers sign Frye as a unrestricted free agent?
In other words, if the blazers do not sign Frye to a qualifying offer, thus making him a unrestricted free agent, is there anything that disqualifies the Blazers from signing him as an unrestricted free agent?
The obvious advantages to this approach are there is no cap hold space taken up while Frye seeks restricted free agent offers, the unrestricted free agent amount is not subject to the qualifying offer minimum.
This coming years economics and Frye’s dismal showing may make Frye’s market value less than the qualifying offer. On the other hand, I believe last years showing leaves Frye underrated therefore he is likely to be a steal at unrestricted market levels.
by mrwonderfulone on May 18, 2009 4:07 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Yes you can
But by not making him a qualifying offer until June 30 and thus making him an unrestricted free agent, you lose the right to match offers from other teams. In order to remove his cap hold from your salary you would also renounce the player, thus losing the right to use the Bird exception he gained to go over the cap to re-sign him. So in this case we would need to have enough cap space to fit Frye’s new salary in, or sign him to a minimum contract which is only a theoretical option. Both of which makes sense, since the team would have indicated that player isn’t all that important to keep. Otherwise you would have made him an initial offer. However he could still be included in sign and trade deals. Independent of any other issues why Frye might want to sign here or elsewhere.

I would have to say quickness/agility.
I was able to two handed dunk in high school, and college but I was not quick. I always had a hard time guarding anybody that was fast, I just couldn’t keep up with them. Just because you can jump, doesn’t translate into being a great basketball player.
I also think being able to do numerous sports well makes you a great athlete. Like Danny Ainge. He successfully played pro Basketball, and pro Baseball. He was not a jump out of the gym kind of guy either.
My favorite teams are the Blazers and any team that is playing the Lakers.

Athleticism is being able to do many different "athletic" things well
Being able to combine quickness, strength, skill, speed, hops, hand-eye-coordination is what athleticism is to me.
Side note on this topic, on ESPN.com they are (were? they haven’t posted anything new on this since March) looking at who would be the King of Playground games to see which athletes really are well rounded. This was at the time a response to the idea being kicked around by sportswriters that Michael Phelps was the greatest athlete in the world. Articles on the Playground challenge are here and here

I think I could be cool with Kidd if he was like Kidd on the Olympic team. He starts, plays five minutes and then gives way to the young guys, and then you got a fresh Jason Kidd waiting on the bench when the poo hits the fan. I doubt Kidd wants that thought. The only way he would do something like that, was if they offered him a coaching gig when he was done playing. And I still don’t think he’d do it.

I prefer research on adult stem cells and those gained e.g. from the umbilical cord, but there are indications that’s not enough for some uses. Some European countries have adopted really dumb rules, e.g. that cell lines harvested before a certain date (say 01/01/2002) can be used why later ones after the law went in effect can’t. That’s something I can’t get behind. Either a country says no for ethical reasons we don’t allow it. That is fine. They have to be aware that scientists and companies won’t work at a high level in that field there and patients might get abroad too for treatment because opinions and situations can change depending on if you are afflicted or not. But it’s a moral decision. Or they say yes and allow and fund research within accepted scientific limits, then that’s fine as well.
by Norsktroll on May 18, 2009 2:58 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Getting a black/white consensus on a sticky morals-bound subject is much easier said than done
You will almost always have some sort of compromise take place, which often leaves the end result looking totally nonsensical.
Take abortion, for example (hate to go here since I don’t want to start a debate on that issue, but is the best example I can think of). Abortion is legal in America, but at the same time it is restricted. Abortions are generally disallowed after a certain point in a fetus’ development. On the other hand, even many abortion opponents support those in case of rape and incest. State laws vary in the dis/encouragement of abortions, restrictions on doctors, condoms, medical insurance coverage, parental disclosure… it goes on and on….
So…. Roe vs. Wade came out decades ago. Is the US for or against this particular medical procedure? There is no clear answer.
In the case of stem cell research, I think every party would like to see a decisive stance taken, but it probably will not happen any time soon. It will more likely resemble a confusing fluctuating hodge-podge of political compromise.
by T$ 225 on May 18, 2009 3:29 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Oh it should and will be restricted according to definitions of what constitutes life and related issues
Including as worldly things as supply and demand and payment. Organ and blood and plasma donations have become a private business even though they are regulated. Stem cells likely will too, and you don’t want to set the wrong incentives there or create cell lines that nobody uses.
But restricting it by an artificial calendar date is really a dumb decision. I can accept that people say we are against it for ethical reasons. I can’t really accept that people say ethical standards are higher or lower depending on if it was 2000 or 2009.

haha then there was the one where he was proving that gravity and momentum and all that would prevent a bowling ball from hitting him in the face if he released the bowling ball (tied on a string to a fixed point above him) from right next to his face. The bowling ball would go away and then return and stop RIGHT by his nose and he wouldn’t even blink. Haha loved that stuff.
