Andre Miller???
Hello Blazerheds...this is my first post. I am a lifelong Blazer fan from DC.....yes DC, if you grew up in DC in the 80s, you wouldnt be a Bullets/Wizards fan either, and I have been rollin with the Blazers since the days of Clyde
Anyway, I am somewhat surprised that Andre Millers name hasnt really floated around here very much. After the playoff loss, to a Houston team that we now see is VERY for real, Brandon really got the point across that the time is now. Yes, Oden will not be a force for another 3 years, but that shouldnt stop the team from going as far as they can.
Signing Andre Miller at starting point?? That would be vicious. Yes, you would have to pay him nicely, but I think he would rather play here than in Philly where AT BEST he will win one playoff series however long he stay there, because Philly can not beat Orlando or Cleveland regardless of any circumstances.
Now, I am not as familiar as many of you are with salary cap/tax issues, but I would package Blake/Outlaw/the first round pick for a solid big man, and attempt to sign Andre Miller, who is a free agent. Imagine the load that would take off Roy to have a PG that rarely messes up anything on the offensive or defensive side....
thoughts???

Two reasons Miller hasn't gotten much love
1) Absolutely no outside shot. Blake did a lot to help spread the floor or at least punish teams that packed it in against Brandon. Miller would not be able to do the same.
2) Age. Miller is 32 and a lot of his game is based on his quickness and ability to get to the rim. Many fear that his production and defense may decline quickly.

counter arguments.
I heart Andre.
The two reasons you give, his salary structure and his not being a part of the Oden’s championship window are the reasons cited for not signing him. Counter arguments:
1) No outside shot:
Brandon has too much responsibility on this team. His effect on the win/loss column would be even better, he would be better rested for a particular game, season and career, and therefore more effective when he needs to assert himself or focus in a different area that the team also needs (lock down defense, playing the SF position etc); if he had someone to share the load with. Andre’s tuff penetration to the hoop, while Brandon is on the court gives Brandon a non-heavy offensive load bearing role that would actually help Brandon’s game. Nate is already playing Brandon/Rudy/Blake combination at times. When the crunch of playoff time came this lineup was the one that was effective at countering the double teams. Imagine Nate having the option to play Miller/BlakeorRudy/Brandon where Miller is bearing the brunt of the offensive work(penetrating) while he is on the court and the other two are spotting up. Brandon’s three has to be respected by defensive’s as much as Blake/Rudy’s and Andre can penetrate (dare I say it) even better than Roy.
Using these 4 players in combination of three improves Portland three ways: PG play, SF play and a fresher Brandon at crunch time.
2). Age and production decline: He hasn’t declined yet, but obviously the contract would have to be structured in accordance with the risk of decline.
Since Oden, every players age has been measured by the Oden championship window. Gone are guys who’s playing time now would hamper development of players that would be here during that window.( Players like Udoka.) Bayless fits Oden’s window and could be Andre for the Blazers for many years to come and at less cost in the immediate next few years. But Brandon has thrown down the gauntlet by saying he wants to compete for the championship next year. If KP picked up Andre, it would be a major shift in direction, win now at the risk of developing (bayless in particular) for the future..
(ie let Bayless develop by not having anyone around that would detract from that who wouldn’t also be around during O’dens window).

Andre can penetrate (dare I say it) even better than Roy.
They both can penetrate just fine, but Roy is the better scorer where Miller is the better passer, once they get in the paint
I agree that they could be complimentary on the offensive end. Unfortunately, it’s the “other” end of the court that I’d be more concerned about…same thing with Kidd and Bibby, BTW. The Blazer’s perimeter defense needs to be improved, and none of these veteran FAs are the “answer” for that (Kidd “used” to be, but not anymore)
I like Miller but would he take a 4-6 million salary?
He would be a stop gap for three years but that is the time that we are going to hit our peak. The last thing I would want is be in our prime and still be looking for a number one point guard. I do think that short term he could get us to 58 to 60 wins and WCF. In addition, we need another guy that can get to the basket, we have enough guys that can hit the outside shot. Our big issue is getting inside.

miller
wants a 5 for 65.mil deal, again same guys who wanted to give r.lewis 120.mil.i seriously really wonder about you people sometimes.
I think Miller will command something exceeding $10M/yr.. PG is a premium position, after all...
Blazers dream of getting him for MLE, but that’s not gonna be his price bracket. The team will have to go choppy-choppy to get enough cap room to get him. Not sure it’s even possible.

That is my point exactly.
The guy would be a great fix for our team, but I think the money can be spent in better places. If were are going to be spending 10 million on a point guard, I would rather up the stakes and get someone a little higher on the food chain than Miller. Our “Window” opens at the start of next season and runs for about 5 to 7 years. If we took Miller now midway of our push we are in the same position. My list would be Parker, Harris, Calderon. Of course everyone would like Paul, Williams and Rose. But one of the three should be something we can get with players and cap room.
Bring back Franz Bread Cards!
I think that our window is only cracked next year.
It’ll open the year after a bit more and then be open for most of the next ten years.
Or so I hope.
Bedge or go home.
The only question is: Which team will pay him that?
The teams with cap space are:
Atlanta – Bibby
OKC – Westbrook
Memphis – Conley
Portland
And he could re-sign with Philly, the team where he skipped the exit interview. Not a giant market for a $10 million PG.

yup, it boils down to the fact i(and probly many other Bedgers) shoot the three better than Miller does. lol He is a great player but doesnt fit with in the spread the floor type offense we have.

we run a perimeter pass jump shot offense
Because our point guards are completely unable to get the ball into the key… entry passes are bad..penetration is nonexistent. With Miller our offense would be a LOT less predictable.
Who has substantial money to spend above the MLE?
Portland, Memphis, OKC, Detroit… there are issues in Philly, so that appears to be a doubtful destination. Memphis has Conley, OKC has Westbrook, and Detroit has Stuckey.
Seems like Portland is probably the only team that can offer him nine million, provided they cut Blake to make room for him.

nah
I’m not really a fan of any free agent this year.
maybe Ron Artest, maybe…

Imaginging him next to Roy
they seem to similar, like Miller is a less skilled version of roy in every way
Miller to play on the 2nd team, tutor Bayless & tag team with Blake
He would be a nice pickup for 3 years but at what price?
Miller posts up
the biggest problem with the offense is relying too much on jumpers. I wouldn’t mind a point guard that can post up or drive off the pick and roll.
draft rodrigue beaubois
Miller coexisted just fine with Iguodala
And AI’s offense is very similar to Brandon’s. The fact that Miller was able to be effective playing along side a ball dominant wing bodes well for what he’d be able to do with Brandon.

I cant believe you guys
Who do you want. You have bashed multiple ideas about TJ Ford, Chris Duhon, Steve Nash, Jason Kidd and now Andre Miller. You have turned down alot of of good talent. I think you people should look more at what he could bring to the team rather than everything thats wrong with him.
Personally i like the pick up and think he would do well with our team. He is getting up there in age but he wouldnt be the starter forever he would be good off the bench too when Bayless takes over.
"You guys"?
There are hundreds of people commenting on this site. They will not all agree on anything. Get used to it—it’s a lot like life.
Its the same peoplt that post mostly on here. You know who you are.
Im really just getting sick of the Blazers and this website
What "you people"
C’mon, we love Miller, Ford, Nash, etc… but we want to gab about it. The league is full of mid tier PG’s who cost an awful lot. If we’re going to pay through the nose we might as well get the best we can afford.
Maybe i should have stated it another way
I have heard it many times about how bad fits there and how bad those choices will be. What about trading for Udonis Haslem. He is on the trading block after the emergence of Michael Beasley. Its been reported that the heat are looking to deal him this offseason. He could be our answer at backup PF. Dont know why he would want a backup position here rather than miami but just a thought
I'm pretty sure
that Haslem is primarily a jump-shooter, if you consult the stats. He certainly looks the part of a banger, but isn’t really.
draft rodrigue beaubois
I know that
But he is the type of player that if you ask him to do something he will work his butt off until he gets it down. He is alot more of a banger than Channing and is a guy who has a great work ethic and just tires out the defense. I think he would be a nice veteran fit for us.
Haslem is making 6.5 mil for 2 more years
There will only be about 10 minutes per game available backing up LMA, unless he’s hurt for awhile
Young veteran PFs like Bass, Maxiell and Haslem just don’t seem like the right fit, to me. But if KP really wants Adonis he could probably deal Outlaw and/or Sergio for him
It seems most of our resources
would have to go after a point guard. Back PF’s a pretty plentiful just not on our roster!
andre miller has a lot of playoff experiance
and watching him run the floor with Batum and Rudy would be absolutely wonderful
I think the following about Blazers PG:
1. KP and Nate would be perfectly happy to let it ride with Blake again.
2. The ACTUALLY AVAILABLE PGs out there who seem to fit are André Miller and Kirk Heinrich.
3. Ricky Rubio in the draft is a pipe dream. The $8M buyout makes him a no-go.
4. You can’t count on being able to draft that position, especially given the Blazers’ low draft position from here on out.
5. Bayless is PG of the future and he’s already under contract.

There have been 20 posts in the past few weeks discussing Miller
Welcome, congratulations for graduating from lurker status to poster.
Most of the posts involving the point guard position discuss Miller, as do a fair number of the Rubio posts, many of the Ty Lawson posts, and nearly all of the “what’s next for the upcoming season posts”. I have a post a little further down among fanposts called Upgrading at the point guard position.
Some people think he’d be too old, too expensive, or doesn’t shoot the 3 well enough. Others think a strong defending point guard like Miller or Hinrich who can distribute the basketball would allow the Blazers to make offensive adjustments that would make them a more efficient offensive team. I am in the latter camp.
Also, some people think Jarryd Bayless is a point guard. I suspect they will be cured of this misapprehension for good during summer league this year, where he’s playing the point but having about the same results as when he played the point last summer – a disaster.
There ain't no cure for the summertime blues

Pretty sure of ourselves, are we?
I’ve been down this road before, but one more time won’t hurt. Last summer Bayless wasn’t asked to play point guard, at least not primarily. The SL team had Koponen and they wanted to take a look at him at the point, and the rest of the team was made up of stiffs and non-scorers (Batum and Steven Hill, included) Monty and the other coaches told Jerryd to just play his game and not worry about how it would look to his Blazersedge.com critics in the future. So Bayless averaged 30ppg and won the tourney MVP.
Most of us here were pretty happy with his performance, because we could see his potential and how he could eventually play alongside Roy. I saw all of the televised SL games and remember Bayless making passes to less-skilled teammates that seldom led to made baskets. How this reflects poorly upon Jerryd now is beyond me, but it seems to have created a label that has Bayless has found hard to rub off (as if he cares what we think) that he’s a “SG in a PG’s body”
Then there was the Steve Blake shoulder injury period where JB got the chance to play extended minutes. Small sample size to be sure, but he showed improvement towards the end of this stretch of games, as has been documented elsewhere. The final piece of news in support of JB came this weekend in the “Combo guards” fanpost right over there on the sidebar. As poorly as Bayless played this year, he still rated 38 on the “pure PG” scale, or the same “level” as Tony Parker.
I don’t know about you, but I’ll take my chances with Jerryd’s future as a PG in the NBA. Here’s hoping the Blazers put some scorers around him on the SL roster in 2009, so his PG play won’t be so “disastrous” this time around
I saw the combo guards post
It’s surely possible Bayless will turn out to be an NBA point guard. No one can see the future clearly. But as I wrote above, I do suspect Bayless will be unable to make this shift.
The best case scenario for us here is that he develops a skill set akin to Tony Parker. Parker was a poor shooter his first year in the NBA, at 42%/32% and averaged 4.3 assists and 2.0 turnovers in 29 minutes while starting. Bayless didn’t earned to minutes to make an apples to apples comparison, and he’s bigger, stronger, and a step slower that Parker, but both are penetrating, scoring guards who don’t get a ton of assists (Parker has not yet averaged even 7 in his career) but help (or in Bayless case theoretically could help) their teams by breaking down defenses and creating.
Unfortunately, at this early stage of his career Bayless has had difficulty finishing inside against the bigger. quicker competition at the pro level and as his outside shot hasn’t been falling to keep defenders honest, and his passing out of the paint when doubled has been quite poor. As a result, he can’t get playing time, since having him on the floor has to this point been a liability. I have doubts as to whether coach McMillan will play him unless he shows signs of those shortcomings improving, though it was clear in the second half of the season Bayless was focusing on passing out whenever he could to try and create for teammates. It’s just that he doesn’t know when to score and when to pass yet. Can he learn this skill? It’s possible.
But great point guards are great in a large part because through the course of their basketball education they’ve acquired that skill. I don’t see Bayless developing it, but I could be wrong, and I hope I am.
Really, who can say anything bad about Bayless
He’s just what, 20 or 21. He looks like an either or; either he’s in the regular rotation behind Blake, or he needs a couple more years. If he’s an or then a tough scoring guard like Terry would be great. Miller would also be a great addition. So this year KP will answer all these questions, hopefully during the draft
