5/16 JD - One Armed Man Edition

I love TV Land for forever and ever after today. I couldn't sleep and felt like crap, so I ended up waking up at 7:30 in the AM. Flipped through the TV Channels and found The Fugitive playing on TV Land.

Some questions for today:

Whatever happened to Tommy Lee Jones?

How in the eff is Soulja Boy famous?

Harrison Ford's jump out of the sewer, best stunt ever?

Any good homemade remedies to cure nausea/hangovers?

Does this JD have a chance to break the unbreakable?

Best stunt ever?

That one was ok but I’m not sure about best ever. That’s a tough question. I think I’ll go with one of my favorite movies ever, which also stars Harrison Ford, Raiders of the Lost Ark. I think the stunt where Indy gets thrown out the windshield, ends up clinging to the front of the speeding truck, then works his way to the back of the truck by hanging on to the undercarriage, then gets dragged along the ground from the back of the truck, climbs his way back up and then takes out the driver. That’s one of the greatest action sequences ever I think. The most exciting part of that whole section where he escapes from the Well of Souls, fights the really big Nazi, has the truck chase, and then finally rescues the ark.

fair enough

I don’t think it’s the best stunt ever, just getting other peoples’ opinions.

I think the best stunt is the one in Goldeneye in the very beginning where the stuntman ends up doing the highest bungee jump ever off that dam

I thought that the better stunt from Goldeneye

is when Bond drives the motorcycle off the cliff to catch up to the airplane.

a chance at the unbreakable

I’d have to say highly unlikely. I for one, cannot allow marginal efforts (sorry thats how I feel) to steal the glory from the enshrined one’s greatest JD ever.

Considering its a bee-you-tee-ful day, I’d guess fellow Bedgers are (or better be) doing something besides spending alot of time here. I for one need to weed my garden and flower beds, mow the lawn, saw up some gnarly oak burls, and rake up some messes outside, prepare for a BBQ and play a little lawn croquet.

I think the goal should be get these first 40 and go outside.

You also asked about that stunt. Meh. Also how does a guy bunji off a dam? Wouldn’t he hit the dam wall in a Sideshow Bob sorta way? Weird.

I do appreciate TVLand but have a few problems with them. Namely, Andy Griffith even wears thin after the 1000th time, and why won’t they buy the rights to Gilligans Island and make me happy?

Good luck getting that record. Have a day my compadres!

Tommy Lee Jones: Are you freaking kidding me guys!!! He was nominated for an Oscar for In the Valley of Elah. And for the sake of all that is holy he went on to be in one of the best movies EVAAAAAA! No Country For Old Men! Hello? That Sheriff is TLJ. He is currently filming “The Company Men”, a film that could be pretty good too.

Soulja Boy: Because mainstream rap is starting to suck again and there was little competition and he came up with one catchy tune. There should be a new genre called Pop Rap. Or maybe Autotune Rap.

Sewer jump: One of the most unrealistic stunts outside of James Bond movies

Homemade remedies: Greasy food. Counter-beer.

drink lots of water before going to sleep, if you still have a hangover on the next day eat greasy food.

by Falcao on May 16, 2009 9:05 AM PDT reply actions

bacon

I don’t miss hangovers. But I heard this report recently that bacon is the best remedy. It breaks down into and replaces the essentially fatty acids (or something) that alcohol robs the body of that produces the effect.

In the day I had two sure fire methods tho. 1> Guzzle lots of water and take a couple aspirin before crashing. 2> a fatty of da kine, coffee, and the couch.

I lived in Germany for a year and a half and

I was told the best thing to drink just before going to bed was sparkling mineral water (soda water). I did this every time I came home from the bars and no hang over. It has something to do with the carbonation. It also helps stop the room from spinning when you are lying in bed.

That if you wake up in pain from an excessive night of drinking and debaughtchery nothing really cures it better then a bloody mary and a nice big breakfast from your local greasey diner.

Norway cheated a bit by sending a singer with Russian heritage to Moscow (contest always held/produced in the country of the previous winner).

Germany (and even the UK, which was decent this year) and the other large countries have a history of ending up bad in this contest since Eastern Europe joined. I bet they wasted a 5-6 figure sum on Dita for 1 minute on stage. Maybe send Rammstein next year to have some shock value :)

Similar taste and old networks. And now the voting is really confusing. It used to be only juries, then only televoting of viewers, and now a mix.

clarification

I make this point from time to time. Lets not confuse most posts in a Junk Drawer with best ever.
Best ever was 92wastheyears for getting the least comments. How can that be?

It was so good, it blew almost everyone away. This is supported by a comment sometime ago after a Dave comment went unresponded to, in that, no comment could have added to the monumentalism of its intrinsic awsomeness.

Really, trying to get the BEST Junk Drawer ever by mashing your palm on the keyboard and tagging it today’s junk is contrary to the sportsmanlike effort the record was founded on.

To bore everyone

Spike Lee did a disservice with this puff piece, especially since Kobe isn’t going to retire for another few years. It was like MJ’s “Come Fly With Me”, hokey NBA propaganda.

I really hope one day Kobe can break his facade and posturing, sit down, and just express his thoughts in one huge book, or that he gets in touch with a real sports writer. I want to read a 400 page book talking about how he still hates Shaq, secretly enjoyed watching Jordan struggle as a Wizard, and poses as a Lakers troll on message boards.

That Steve Nash is exactly the same as Kirk Hinrich, but worse.

If Dell, Inc. wants to market its product in that way, then so be it.

If you want to boycott Dell, Inc. for marketing its product in that way, then so be it.

If I find you to be a overreactive over-the-top blowhard on occasion, then so be it.

Y’know, I totally disagreed with the decision of Dell, Inc. to fire Ben Curtis as “Steven” in its ad campaign way back in 2003 due to him getting arrested for criminal possession of marijuana, but I didn’t throw a childish hissy fit about it.

Ok in all seriousness now.

It’s all about personal preference. If there’s something about Apple that really jumps out at you (such as the aesthetics or the interface of the operating system, or the Apple-store support), that’s where the value comes in. You lose a few things too, such as the lower number of games and apps in general.

Personally, I’d get a nice laptop from Lenovo with discreet graphics and test out Windows 7 on it. But it’s definitely about how much you prefer certain areas of Apple.

If you have any questions, feel free. I’m a fairly OS-agnostic IT guy.

by Timmay! on May 16, 2009 8:06 PM PDT up reply actions

Ok, I'd love your input on this then.

I have an amount of money to spend on a laptop… say $2000. I’m not a huge gamer, but I do like to play the latest NBA 2K and a few others… you’d recommend a Lenovo?

draft rodrigue beaubois

by Cablinasian on May 16, 2009 8:27 PM PDT up reply actions

$2000 is plenty for laptops these days

On the PC side, that’ll get you a pretty high end machine with a nice video card onboard.

While I like Lenovo’s, they are pretty boring machines. Your main choices are Dell, HP, Lenovo, and Apple. Acer, Sony and Asus are also available but I don’t have hands-on experience with them

Avoid Toshiba at all costs.

What do you value in a laptop? Large or small? (it’s nice to have a big screen but they’re bulkier) What’s your main tasks you’ll use it for? I’ll pop around based on your preferences and see what ideas I can come up with. I have some time this evening.

Honestly, you could probably get a decent one for under $1,000 and use the rest of the money for other stuff. But if the money is there to be used… well, we can always get a nicer laptop. :)

by Timmay! on May 16, 2009 8:51 PM PDT up reply actions

well

the university is providing the money, and its a “use it or lose it” scenario… so I might as well live it up.

I’d probably like a 15.4ish laptop… I don’t like the bigger 17’’ models… too bulky. I don’t use it for anything spectacular, just the normal stuff. Sports game here and there, surfing the internet… the most taxing program I use is probably Maple.

It’s pretty simple… just something that will run well for a while. I probably won’t get the laptop until late summer, but I’m trying to get my research done now so that I know what to plan for.

draft rodrigue beaubois

by Cablinasian on May 16, 2009 9:06 PM PDT up reply actions

Sounds good.

If you’ve got 2,000 to spend, might as well use it.

I’ll look around and see what’s in that range right now. On the PC side, it’ll probably be loaded. Blu-ray, nice CPU, great video card.

BTW did you know EA canceled NBA Live 09 for the PC?

by Timmay! on May 16, 2009 9:10 PM PDT up reply actions

by Timmay! on May 16, 2009 9:17 PM PDT up reply actions

no problem

It’s only advantageous if you want to write notes in class. You can write on the laptop and it’ll transcribe it for you. Also useful (I believe) in art classes. If you’re a typer, it’s no biggie.

BTW does the $2,000 need to include any warranties, etc? I presume you’d want to have quick turnaround if there is a problem.

by Timmay! on May 16, 2009 9:26 PM PDT up reply actions

hmm

the tablet functionality sounds like it would be useful for the calculus-type classes… typing greek symbols and the like can be annoying.

I’d love a good warranty.. do you know of brands that have better customer service?

draft rodrigue beaubois

by Cablinasian on May 16, 2009 9:31 PM PDT up reply actions

As a rule, the businesses focused on enterprise have better warranty service

That’s Dell (Sorry Sophia) and Lenovo. Last I checked, they both have options for a technician to be onsite the next day to take care of you. It’ll cost a bit, of course. HP may also have next-day onsite.

The advantage of the Apple is that you could walk into a nearby (?) Apple store and talk to someone in person. Especially if you have AppleCare.

Almost all of these will add between 200-300 to the price. But then you’ll also be covered if you have problems.

by Timmay! on May 16, 2009 9:47 PM PDT up reply actions

Hrm. The 15-inch Macbook Pro is 1,999, without OneCare. Ouch.

There goes the whole quota, and I presume that doesn’t include Office for Mac.

Does Apple run sales? You could also look at a refurb.

BTW my wife (graduated not long ago) just looked up and said “he should go look at a tablet at best buy before he makes his call. Make sure the tablet has OneNote (MS’s writing software) installed.”

If you’re interested, it’s worth a quick look. Make sure you can try it out with a pen. The bad news: Tablets are built for long battery life, so they will not have really nice cpu’s and graphics. Typically a low-power core 2 duo, and an Intel graphics card. You could still play older games fine, and newer games at lower resolutions.

Take a look at the Dell model, and the Lenovo model.

I’ll also list a few regular laptop models shortly.

by Timmay! on May 16, 2009 10:29 PM PDT up reply actions

Here's a few models non-tablet models....

For a Lenovo, the T500 (15.4 inch screen) is likely the way to go.

Either two options on the right of the linked page would be fine. You’ll likely want to do these upgrades:

- Consider the LED backlit screen. They’re usually great.
- Upgrade to 3GB memory.
- Do the 250 or 320GB drive (your call)
- If you plan to use Clear as your ISP, consider getting the WiMAX Wifi upgrade.
- The 9 cell battery adds bulk, but is real nice.
- It’s not worth the price to upgrade to blu-ray

3 years of next-day onsite warranty is $219.

Note: This laptop will not make you look cool. But it should be reliable, fast, and play games just fine. I haven’t confirmed the numbers, but this should add up to around 2,000.

by Timmay! on May 16, 2009 10:52 PM PDT up reply actions

ok, very cool

I just went on and upgraded the machine to those specs, and it ended up costing a little under $2000…

Thanks for the help. I would not have known to look at Lenovo… it has great reviews and a great warranty.

by Cablinasian on May 16, 2009 11:11 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm typing tonight on a Lenovo x61 tablet

It’s had the occasional problem, but has been overall pretty reliable. I’m looking to upgrade to another Lenovo eventually. My model is a small 12 inch screen and great for airplanes…

Definitely not a sexy choice, but they usually do good work. It’s worth reading up on reviews though, since I haven’t personally used the T500 model.

by Timmay! on May 16, 2009 11:16 PM PDT up reply actions

I joke that I have obsessive compulsive tendencies in some areas

one of those is reading consumer reviews. No stone will go unturned.

I’d rather whatever I get be less flashy… I don’t really care how it looks, and its probably less likely to be stolen if it looks really average.

I pretty much need functionality and longevity.. from the initial rewiews, looks like this is a really good option. Thanks again.

No problem.

I’ll be around if you have any questions down the road.

by Timmay! on May 16, 2009 11:26 PM PDT up reply actions

For the Dell...

Consider the XPS M1530.

Then, under customization, consider these changes:

- The default CPU is fine, but the upgrade to the T8300 would be nice if it fits in the budget.
- Upgrade the hard drive to either the 320GB 7200rpm (faster) or 500GB 5400rpm (slightly slower but more storage space). Your choice there.
- Blu-ray is included in this model. If it’s not, you can add it. (I don’t know if it includes software to play movies)
- Upgrade video to the 8600M GT if you’d like to play newer games. (The 8400M GS would be ok for older games).
- Upgrade to the Intel Wireless-N card. The Dell one stinks.
- Anything else would be your call. Lots of other options.

I haven’t found Dell’s next-day onsite service plan pricing yet. I presume it’s in the $250 range. Dell’s site is having problems so I can’t do anything more with them tonight.

by Timmay! on May 16, 2009 11:09 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't like Dell's site... harder to navigate.

I do like that they offer the higher speed 320GB hard drive, but the price appears to be a little higher than the Lenovo for somewhat similar specs.

draft rodrigue beaubois

by Cablinasian on May 16, 2009 11:22 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah Dell's site is tough to navigate.

If the price is a bit high, consider removing the Blu-ray drive and see if it helps. The lenovo model doesn’t have one, so it might even it out.

I don't need the Blu-ray

so I pulled it out… not really much interest.

Yowch! The old Pentium 4. Worst processor of a generation.

You’re going to be blown away at any of the machines you’re looking at.

BTW you might want to check out the difference between a 14 and a 15 inch model at the store if you haven’t already. Lenovo’s T400 and T500 are similar models, except 14" and 15" screens, respectively. A lot of companies have both screen options.

If you’re going to carry it around a lot, it’s worth a quick perusal to help cement your decision. I like both, so I’ve had a hard time deciding before.

One thing to note: A lot of the laptop-makers love to release new models right before the school year. The good news? You can get the latest specs. The bad news? They often won’t be as cheap as the older models.

So it wouldn’t be surprising to see some new laptop models over the Summer.

I hate watching tape delay stuff, so I kept some crazy hours last summer. The ACB playoffs aren’t enough for me to do that again I don’t think.

I’m really interested in seeing Freeland… it’s only a few hours sleep.

I only saw the championship game

I missed most of the Olympics because we were on our honeymoon.

I watched the last game live overnight, and almost woke up the house 4 times.

I was in Idaho visiting relatives

When Rudy starting draining threes… it was so hard not to start chanting “RUDY!”

I almost jumped out of bed when he dunked it on Dwight

It was also the first game that I saw Rudy’s move, where he shuffles his feet for space, and nails a fallaway three.

That was a fun game.

that was when I jumped off the couch

I think he had Kobe on him…. four feet behind the three point line… gets his swaggerish dribble going… fades back… nails it in Kobe’s face. Oh that was nasty.

Rudy had Tayshaun Prince on him in that play.

Talking about Joel Freeland, he´s not very flashy but he´s very consistent.

Greatest movie stunt:

The list would have to include Steve McQueen somewhere. Either the motorcycle jump at the end of The Great Escape or the chase in Bullit where he reportedly did all his own driving. And don’t bring up Jackie Chan as an actor doing his own stunts…Jackie Chan is great, but he is definitely a stuntman doing his own acting rather than the other way around. Actually Steven Seagal doing any acting at all is a dangerous stunt. I usually have to turn away.

The cowards never started
The weak died along the way
Only the strong survived
They were the Trailblazers

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.

OK, that should just about wrap up the goaltending discussion.
