5/15/2009 JD- History of the Mohawk

The Houston Rockets have inspired me to write of the history of the Mohawk.

In America.. the popularized version of the Mohawk started with :

Cheyenne_20medicine_20man_medium

via www.freewebs.com

....The Mohawk Tribe get their name from Mohowa or  "man eaters" . They were around untill the Dutch and French  showed up .. and well the rest is American History 101.

The Clonycavan Man, a 2000-year-old male bog body found near Dublin, Ireland, was found to be wearing a Mohawk, held together with plant oil and pine resin imported from southwestern France or Spain.[1] The Mohawk, which can also be known as "Moonhawk" in some countries, is often thought to have been worn by the Mahican and Mohawk tribes, but the name may be a misnomer; it is believed that the Wyandot were the first Native American tribe to wear the hairstyle, but early French explorers mistook them for the Mohawk tribe[citation needed]. Many other accounts of Native American cultures however claim that 'In times of war, Mohawk men shaved their heads except for a scalplock or a crest down the center of their head—the hairstyle known as a roach or a "Mohawk." [2] During World War II, members of the Allied Airborne soldiers (specifically the 101st Airborne Division - the "Screaming Eagles") shaved their hair into Mohawks.[3]

(wikipedia.com)

Punk 'movement' in the 1980's popularized this hairstyle and today several renditions of the original due are the fauxhawk and eurohawk (lol).

my fave is the mul-hawk

i visited my in-laws in no-cal and one of their neighbors kids was a hawk short in the front and got longer as it went to the back. and the best part was the kid had natural flaming orange hair. first time the kid came in to the room I snorted trying to stifle a laugh.

In England they call it a "Mohican"

I’m not sure what they call it elsewhere.

I had a mohawk before, several years ago, when I had a meeting about a project I didn’t think I would hired for, but I wanted to stand out. So, I shaved myself a mohawk and dyed it green. Nothing came of it, but I don’t think it hurt anything.

There’s no pictures of it, so it’s like it never happened.

im making sure he never turns into a high volume jump shooter and is a lock down defender because

he has a longer than average wingspan for a 4 year old and he can jump really high.

He is also tall. I think he’ll probably be about 6’5 or 6’6 so he’s prime SG material in this sense.

What i am doing to prepare him for the 5-6 year old YMCA league in the winter is practicing his lateral moves on the perimeter and his quickness along the baseline. This will enable him to block every shot and get every rebound :)

I think we can go to the championship next season.

for your own sanity, don't coach 5-6 year olds

the games are fun because the kids are having fun, but invariably one will just pick up the ball and run around the court with it, playing keep-away, and eventually the game will just devolve into a rugby scrum where you are following a massed group of children around the court. The ball pops out toward the hoop, occasionally.

i would say

neither romance novels nor porn are really “dirty”. I think women read these books b/c

1. easy to read
2. they are pure fantasy
3. the image of a tall dark handsome super virile male riding off into the sunset on a horse w/ no shirt on so she princess can see his rippling pectorals is something a woman can summon during.. um.. (whisper voice) sex

It is the best, meester man!!

It has as much caffiene as Mt. Dew, and isn’t gross. And it uses Splenda, which my wife ain’t allergic too (regular artificial sweeteners, like in Diet Pepsi, make her throat close).

I don’t like coffee’s taste.

Pepsi One is pretty good in a pinch.

It’s just not the same though. Though I did stop inhaling it a few years back to keep from taking the fast track to diabetes.

I agree, coffee is just something I’ve never acquired a taste for. Just like beer, which I’ll only drink occasionally.

No, she can have Splenda

And she can eat the hobo as long as they didn’t eat a sizeable amount of other artificial sweeteners.

Since most sugar free products use stuff she can’t eat, yeah, she usually stays away from diabetic hobos. Luckily, there’s a strong correllation between diabetes and not wanting to be living on the streets away from medicine, so it doesn’t come up often.

When it does come up, hoo boy… :-(

Heroin tainted blood is a delicacy in our world

So what we do, I taste test it, and if it isn’t accompanied by that sweet, sweet heroin taste (it’s instantly recognizable), I stop her from munching down if she isn’t in full eating frenzy already.

Ya know, we have a system, and it might not be the best, but it works.

She’s not too worried that the big 3-0 is on the way for her. I’m sure it won’t last that long though. The peace will undoubtedly be broken by anger and certain spousal violence when she starts hitting me to get out her frustration…..

……that and I’ll be able to say she’s in her 30’s when I’m not cause she’s six weeks older than me. That’ll be fun.

My face sucks...

…your FACE.

BURNAGE.

I went to a party last night for work and a 20-ish girl was hitting on me (how could she not), and someone mentions I just got married and the girl makes a big deal out of it, and wants to see a picture of my wife, so I show her, and she goes “How old is she? She looks so young!”.

And I say “she just turned 29” and she goes “OH MY GOD, 29? She looks much too young to be 29. Look at this!”.

So I asked her what 29 looks like, because it was a weird reaction. My wife looks like normal for a 20-sumthin’, she doesn’t look like a kid. No one can be attractive and 29 at the same time, according to a 20 year old girl.

Does your kid have the gap in the tooth? I dunno what it is with Noah, I just hate his face…

I saw footage of him as a kid, and you’re like “aww that’s a cute kid”, and then he grew up looking exactly the same and as a 20-something man it looks gross.

If he wasn't already so good as a rookie, I'd say you have a point.

But it’s not like he was only ok as a rookie. He was outstanding as a rookie and based on that starting point, his six year progression actually seems very plausible.

Also there can be facial structure changes for people even past 18. A lot of people who are taller don’t stop growing until they’re 21 or 22. It’s a bit different from someone in his mid-30’s all of the sudden growing 4 hat sizes.

1st ballot HoF even

Which makes it all the more annoying he so BLATANTLY juiced, when he was already a multiple MVP.

The way I see it, some NBA players are probably juicing, though until someone is caught or more rumors start popping up, it’s not a good use of time to wonder who it is. Matt Geiger got caught, and aside from him I can’t think of anyone.

There are real true athletic freaks in this world, and adding dozens of pounds of muscle over a few years isn’t something unheard of for certain genetic types. I am someone who CAN add 20lbs of muscle over 5 months if I focused on it, and I’m not an elite athlete. So when people question if that is possible, I say “yes it is, for certain people”. Plus, NBA players so often start their careers so young and while their bodies are still developing and growing… so big changes in their body should be expected early in their careers.

BUT, it is such a big problem in other sports with much more stringent testing, I can’t imagine people aren’t doing it in the NBA. Until someone gets caught or rumors start becoming convincing (we don’t even get unconvincing rumors yet, it’s just almost totally quiet), I won’t really worry about it.

In the NBA

I think its more about recovery… basketball is an impact sport in terms of motion of the human body, and 82 games is a lot of wear and tear. That’s why most players don’t play into their later 30’s (unless you count grandpa Mutumbo who I think is 95) Steroids biggest edge is that you can recover quicker and workout more. That’s an advantage in the L

True, and I think people are doing it

I just dunno who, and I do think it’s possible for a “Lebron” physical specimen to exist… but steroid could be a part of it.

I know a lot of people who use different steroids, HGH, all that junk, and many actors do as well. A ton of people in the entertainment industry worldwide using steroids to burn fat, look young, etc, so it’s pretty ubiquitous.

NBA players, at least a good amount, HAVE to be using. Like I said, I just dunno who, and I don’t wanna play the guessing game till more concrete evidence come out. Even if it’s only hearsay, as long as it comes from those close to the situation.

Looking at the Nuggets trainer, who is clearly roided out, you can see it finding its way into player’s bodies.

If for no other reason than to show other NBA teams that you value those 2nd round picks so you don’t get lowball trade offers for them. And you never know what you might find in a workout. True. They would get someone good, especially if they team him up with Hoiberg on the personnel side I think that could work.

He would be one of the first guys to figure out the loopholes in the new CBA in 2011. And the Wolves figure to have some cap space and quite a few picks in the next 2 years that they need to use wisely.

Problem for us is that he is in on our general plans what to do in this draft.

No defense, no defense, and no position

Love and Jefferson can’t be on the same team and ever go anywhere as teammates. They might become decent with Jefferson as the center, but never do well against a real team— with those three as the core.

They need to decide whether they like Jefferson or Love as the PF, and move from there. Both are undersized and bad defenders, which is never a good combo to build around.

Foye is okay, he isn’t bad and can score, but he’s an undersized SG who can’t guard PGs. That too, is not something to build around.

They will at least have a few drafts to change things around.

It's a better core than Miles/Z-Bo/Telfair

But still, only Jefferson is a star (or going to be), and still he’s heavily flawed as a main player.

With a few drafts, some Penn cap wizardry, they could be right back in line.

As long as we don’t lose KP, though, we can lose Penn.

Penn is a mastermind of the CBA.

I’m sure his lessons will be remembered by others on our staff. Still, he will be missed.

Reportedly that's what Randy Pfund (Miami) and Dennis Lindsey (Spurs) did

Penn is very ambitious according to a post by Ben on Hoopus. He would be more about getting the entry with the GM job title than a big salary and a total change. He also is used to the collaborative approach of decision making with everyone giving their input, which seems to be how the Wolves owner operates. And he doesn’t want to fire a ton of people who are still under contract but re-use them at least a year or two.

I watched the trailer to the Spike Lee Kobe film again. It looks a bit better than a clip they would show at halftime

And I know how the game ended that was documented :)
I suppose Simmons would rip that thing to shreds if ESPN’s editors didn’t beg him not to mention it.

There is a discussion on RealGM about Nate Robinson

I know Morti has some strong opinions on him. What matters would be what Roy thinks of his former teammate :)

Funny thing is, I looked up a bit of his history, and he e.g. has a better FG% and TS% than Blake not just under D’Antoni but over his career despite obviously being about 10% worse than him from outside. He gets 4x as many free throw attempts. At 24 he has more points in his few years than Blake over his career. Passing is not stellar but okay both in the open and the half court floor. He is laterally quick enough to stay with the best point guards, problem is he can’t contest many shots even if in perfect position due to being 5’8’’. I think if he was 6’3’’ he would be one of the top PGs in the league. But since he is not and Nate so far wasn’t really a friend of small point guards, is there any merit to that if he would be cheap from NY (they are likely to not match offers above $4 million I would assume). Don’t know if he could replace Blake or just Sergio, and what B-Rex would think about this.

eh.

He would have to pledge to really commit on defense and be willing to be a fourth option. Not sure his ego is a good match for the team.
