Blazers should play more fast paced

Star-divide

The Blazers should play to their strengths in the second unit. I dont like the idea of trying to change Jerryd into the point guard of the future by making him a true pass first point guard.

I think that we should run more in the scond team becuase thats what our bench does best. Jerryd could lead the team with the fast paced offense and Rudy would excel while getting open shoots due to Jerryd penetrating. Outlaw and Rudy on the wings with Bayless getting to the rim would be great. Oden would get more open looks and might play a little better than he did in the half court offense.

I then think we should get a PF who could run with the second unit and make us more dangerous with his abilty in the fast paced offense. I have stated before that i like the idea of Siging Pops Mensah Bonsu to play in that unit but being the 11th or 12th man off the bench. I have thought about Chris Wilcox or maybe Antonio Mcdyess but i have decided that i think we should trade for Boris Diaw. Maybe mid second round we could draft Josh Hytvelt from Gonzaga or Jeff Pendergraph from Arizona State. Who both and known as workhorses and both can shoot and bang down low. Maybe even bring over Joel Freeland. Who knows

Boris Diaw has the potential to be great in the fast paced offense we should run. Yes he has a big contract but i would like the idea of trading our 1st round draft pick and sergio and maybe a sign and trade with Channing Frye for him. Diaw can shoot well and could also fill in for L.A. in the starting lineup if he needs too. He is coming off 2 bad years in a row and could come at a cheaper price then he usually would have.

We obvioulsy need a starting point guard but i dont think we should get it throught he draft in Ricky Rubio or Brandon Jennings. I dont even think we should go for Andre Miller or Jason Kidd. I think that we should trade Blake and our early second round pick to Indiana for T.J. Ford. I like Ford alot and mock drafts have the Pacers taking Eric Maynor so maybe T.J. is on the trading block. I think that we have a better chance of getting Ford then we would of getting Hinrich or somebody like that. Indiana only has 2 picks with the 13th and 52nd so they could possibly like the idea of having another draft pick to possibly make more deals. I say once we get rid of Sergio we can bring over Petteri Koponen to be our 3rd point guard.

PG: Ford, Bayless, Koponen

 SG: Roy, Rudy, Webster

SF: Batum, Outlaw

PF:  L.A., Diaw, Draft pick {Hytvelt, Pendergraph} maybe Joel Freeland

C: Pryzbilla, Oden

I think TJ Ford is there for the taking

If we want him… Might not be a bad pickup actually as a 3rd or 4th option for a PG at the right price.

TJ Ford refused to be the 2nd option.

I doubt he wants less than five minutes a game as a 3rd or 4th option

by Jerb on May 14, 2009 7:52 PM PDT up reply actions

I think he meant something else

I think he meant as a 3rd or 4th option for us at point guard. Probably with Andre Miller and Kirk Hinrich ahead of TJ Ford. I think we could get Ford and he is a pretty good point guard who can still improve.

He means that TJ Ford threw a hissy fit in Toronto

When Calderon outplayed him and won the starting job while TJ was out with an injury. It’s why he got traded to the Pacers. He is a little bit “me first”.

i think that can change

I think for the sake of going depp in the playoffs that he would play team ball. He really wouldnt have anybody to compete with if we traded Blake. Plus him and Lamarcus have the Texas connection going on. Might help

He had problems in Toronto w/Calderon, and in Indy w/Jack

0-2.

Why be the team that gives him the opportunity to get a 3rd strike?

He had legit competition

in toronto with calderon but come on there aint no problems in indiana. They all know up there that TJ is the better point guard. He wouldnt have any competiton here for the starting job. I think if you can explain to Jerryd that he has the run of the second team and give him playing time there wouldnt be a problem. Really nobody is perfect though. It dosent matter who they bring in. Somebodys going to have a problem with him and have something bad to say. TJ is a good point guard and its realistic to get him its not realisticto get some of the guys people are drooling over.

if Artest can change im sure TJ can

by that article im sure indiana would be happy to get rid of him. I think at least we could give him a shot and if anything get rid of him at the end of the season when he becomes a free agent. Ron Artest has become likeable and i dont see why TJ cant be the same

by quezadaz on May 14, 2009 10:51 PM PDT up reply actions

Artest cares about winning

TJ cares about himself the same way AI does. Why pick up TJ when we had Jack at a substantially reduced cost? You could make the argument that TJ is only marginally better.

Picking up Ford would go against the mantra KP set when he took over as GM. Character before talent. Artest has demonstrated that he has changed, so picking him up would be different than picking up Ford who has demonstrated that he could start fights with Jack. Ford has the luxury of shooting whatever contested shot he wants in Indy as a primary option. He won’t get that luxury here.

Character over talent only gets you so far

Imma let you think and tell me what championship teams have had no bad players on there team. No me first players. There arent alot of teams like that. We need to just teach TJ to fight with the other teams not his own. Milwaukie and Toronto he was traded becuase they already had point guards better than Ford. The last time i checked he is still in Indiana. You cant always have the players you want. Its not possible. If he dont work out we can just not resign him. We arent going to win with Blake as point guard and if we want to trade and get Rubio thats setting us up for a long term failure instead of a 1 year thing

Although I am not a fan of TJ

you can’t argue that he isn’t a winner. Everywhere he has played has one more games, and when he left they lost. This is true for Milwaukee, Toronto, and Indiana so far.

TJ is a winner. But he also has issues with being a me first player.

There's a reason why he's available.

It’s not lack of talent. He’s a d-bag.

Jarrett Jack was known as one of the most likeable guys in the locker room. Given Ford’s history and Jarrett’s reputation, I’d say Ford was probably at fault. I think JJ called him out for his selfish play. I’d pass.

I don’t think a point guard who needs to control the ball is a good fit alongside Brandon Roy and two post players (Oden and Aldridge). Not the type of point guard I’d like to see on this team.

I do love TJ’s game, just don’t think he’s a good fit here.

by NBR on May 16, 2009 12:41 AM PDT up reply actions

Love the enthusiasm.

I think Diaw would rather be more of a featured peice than an 11th or 12th man though. He’s good and has been a great fit in Charlotte. TJ (and his contract) would pretty much have to earn starter minutes to be worthwhile. Good ideas.

Diaw would be a huge part of our team

Diaw would be able to give Lamarcus a rest and bring in the second team and just let them run and tire out the other team. TJ has the Texas connerction with Lamarcus and has the ability to be a very good starter in this league. He can score and can also pass the ball so that would be what we need a good point guard who can set up the offense and also be our 3rd scorer

If there so in love with him

then why are the bobcats really interested in grabbing Rasheed Wallace and moving him to the backup role

by quezadaz on May 14, 2009 9:44 PM PDT up reply actions

A frontcourt of Emeka Okafor, Boris Diaw, and Rasheed Wallace could work well as a unit if the ...

Charlotte Bobcats swing a sign-and-trade deal this summer whereby “Sheed” is acquired for Gerald Wallace. On offense, Okafor can play the pivot down on the low block, Diaw can play power forward by manning the high-post, and Wallace can camp out at the weakside corner as a small forward; in turn, Wallace can body up man-to-man against opposing centers, Okafor can provide weakside help and contain opposing power forwards, and Diaw can defend small forwards one-on-one on the perimeter.

It’s not Diaw who Brown wanted to be dealt elsewhere this past season, but rather “Crash” Wallace. However, it’s been recently reported by Rick Bonnell of the Charlotte Observer that “Wallace needed coaching and he absorbs it from Brown with humility and attention […] understands this is his chance to grow, and Brown loves the savvy questions Wallace asks during practice.”

http://www.charlotteobserver.com/206/story/702404.html

As a result, it seems that the Bobcats main moves this off-season will be simple in nature. First and foremost, Raymond Felton will most likely be re-signed to a reasonable contract. Next, the 12th pick in the 2009 NBA Draft will possibly be used to select a defensive-minded shooting guard (e.g., Tyreke Evans) to learn under the ropes of Raja Bell for one season. Lastly, one or both of its second-round draft picks will be used on potential replacements for fatty Sean May and the aging Juwan Howard as Diaw’s backup (e.g., Taj Gibson, Jeff Pendergraph, et al.) due to Alexis Anjica being a downright bust.

by AK1984 on May 15, 2009 12:29 AM PDT up reply actions

I dont see that happening

Although you make it sound very interesting i think that they wouldnt want Sheed playing the 3. If i were the bobcats i would rather have Diaw but if they are willing to give him up i think the blazers would find a sopt of the team to give him touches. I dont think you can call Anjica a bust yet he is still young and needs to bulk up and show some more willingness to work hard and be commited which he clearly is not

by quezadaz on May 15, 2009 12:56 AM PDT up reply actions

I don't think that Rasheed Wallace will join the Charlotte Bobcats, either, since it'd take a ...

sign-and-trade to do it — which isn’t in the Detroit Pistons best interest, for that ballclub wants to clear salary cap space this off-season to reportedly sign Carlos Boozer — plus, Larry Brown has gotten along with his frontcourt of Emeka Okafor, Boris Diaw, and Gerald Wallace.

For “Sheed’s” sake, however, he should just be willing to take a reduction in salary and chase another ring by signing a one-year contract worth the mid-level exception with the San Antonio Spurs. Wallace’s immense pride and hubris might prevent him from doing that, though, so he may be out of luck and just hang it up this summer.

Which he got in the one year he played really good replacing Amare during microfracture rehab. I was really surprised the Suns found a taker for that ugly deal with Diaw attached. I don’t want it anywhere near the Blazers.

T.J. Ford might work, though he wouldn’t improve our defense. Koponen isn’t NBA ready.

We had J Jack who beat out Ford. Why get Ford now when we could have hung on to Jack and gave him a bigger role (Granted I’m very anti Jack). Ford will disrupt our chemistry and will not take a lesser role on our team.

There is a good thing about ford

We can give Ford a shot and if he dosent prove that he can led the team then just let him go because he will be a free agent next summer and we can either move Bayless to the starting position or go out and get somebody else. He wont have to take a lesser role if we can make him the starter.

Matching Salaries

I’m not a trade guru or anything…but matching salaries to acquire ford in a trade would require us to give up 2 rotation players…Frye and SF/Blake or Sergio/Cash.

If we give up Blake…then we are taking a big gamble with Ford. If he doesn’t pan out then its going to cost us some wins.

If we give up Sergio…then Ford starts and Blake comes off the bench it still doesnt solve your post about getting the 2nd unit to run more. Blake is horrible running the break. He may not have been as bad as Jack…but he is well below average.

Ford in the starting unit takes away touches from Brandon and LMA. We already have 2 main options on offense in the starting unit…we need to fill the other 3 spots with complimentary offensive players. If Greg develops as he should next season…what then? There’s no way all 4 players could get enough shots.

But that goes for anybody

If we trade and get Andre Miller and it dosent work out with him then we lose games. People want sergio and channing gone anyway so it makes sense. We need a 3rd scorer to take touches away from LMA and Brandon. Teams are starting to realize that in the 4th quarter that brandon will have the ball. They know who are shooters are and we need somebody that can get them better looks and make sure Brandon does have to have the ball the whole 4th quarter.

good article

it said that Brandon hurt them when they tried to trap him. I dont think a few high scoring games will make them rethink trapping Roy because we have all seen the shooting go cold in Portland before. Rudy can go cold and if he does then we have no serious 3 pt shooter.

by quezadaz on May 14, 2009 11:48 PM PDT up reply actions

hypothetical lineup

well in your lineup we will have no 3 point threat in the starting lineup…teams will go zone and make it tough for brandon and ford to slash or lma to work down low. with batum and pryz not being offensive threats combined with the lack of a 3 point shooter to spread the defense i’d be very skeptical of much success. we tend to have sluggish starts in the first quarter bc of batum and pryz limitations already…not having a 3pt shooter will probably make thigns worse.

Some remarks I made about Jerryd Bayless fitting in with Nate McMillan apply to T.J. Ford.
“Oh, and by the way, I’m not entirely sold that McMillan will adjust his offense to appease a gunner like Jerryd Bayless. It’s one thing when McMillan coached a dribble-drive point guard like Antonio Daniels, for he was very careful with the ball — as his assist-to-turnover ratio in 2003-2004 and 2004-2005 were both greater than 4:1 — and had a sharp-shooting backcourt partner in Ray Allen to mask his mediocre long-range shooting.”

http://www.blazersedge.com/2009/5/9/870797/buyers-sellers#15546884

Ford would be a downright terrible fit with the Portland Trail Blazers for many reasons, with his overpriced contract, inferior defense, so-so long-range shooting, small size, injury prone body, and reckless playmaking style being some of those said reasons. All in all, it’s an impractical idea.

by AK1984 on May 15, 2009 2:37 AM PDT up reply actions

Nate McMillan will continue to run his high/low zone offense; thus, if you want the Portland Trail ...

Blazers to immediately transform into some fast-paced, run-and-gun team, then it’d be in your best interest to call for McMillan’s head.

http://www.cybersportsusa.com/hooptactics/hilozone.asp

Under McMillan, the Trail Blazers are a squad that frequently runs half-court sets and rarely ever has broken plays or runs in transition. Yes, there are occasional fast breaks here and there — which was Sergio Rodriguez’s forte — but you can sure as heck bet that “Sarge” cringed during those moments.

by AK1984 on May 15, 2009 12:41 AM PDT up reply actions

They have the perfect tools for a fast paced run and gun second team

Why have somebody like rudy or bayless if you arent going to use his skill set in the fast break. I dont see Bayless doing well at all in the half court offense. They have alot of depth right now but if you take a step back and look. They are pieces to the wrong puzzle. Bayless and Rudy would excel in the fast paced offense. Im not talking like the suns but more fast paced thatn what it is. We are one of the most athletic teams in the nba but dont really show it because of our slow offense. I think thats why some people have to question is Nate really the coach we want to move forward with. After this season there is no looking back,

by quezadaz on May 15, 2009 1:03 AM PDT up reply actions

I like the fact that Nate hasn't pushed the tempo a whole lot.

By forcing the team to work in a half court set often he’s instilled some good fundamentals. I watched the Hawks in the playoffs and that team seems to have no idea how to play in the half court. Whenever they were forced to play slow, their offense stalled and it almost always seemed to result in a contested jumper. Our team knows how to play a slow paced game so teams can’t expect to slow down and hurt us.

That being said, hopefully Nate plans to work on pushing the pace so we can play better at a fast pace since it can be useful to have as a tool against some teams.

by Jerb on May 15, 2009 1:09 AM PDT up reply actions

If you want to watch fast-paced, up-tempo basketball, then I suggest checking out some ...

women’s basketball games at the University of Oregon. With Paul Westhead there running the show — with an emphasis on “running” — that sloppy brand of basketball will undeniably rear its ugly head each and every game.

http://blog.oregonlive.com/behindducksbeat/2009/03/oregon_to_name_new_womens_bask.html

Oddly, I’d also be cool with replacing Nate McMillan. I, on the other hand, desire to hire a head coach whose focus is on defense, catering the offense to the center with a heavy dose of pick-‘n’-roll, and having a fiery personality that pushes his players on a daily basis.

hmm

i dont know about what your post is about i was just thinking it’d be funny as hell if wilkens coached us and got us a 2nd title…30 years after his first one.

My post is realistic options that dont have character issues

and could help us out. that would be great. I think that if anybody could do it Wilkens would be the man to do it.

You should've seen the debacle that was Lenny Wilkens' last go-around with the ...

Seattle SuperSonics — wherein he was a total stooge for the Professional Basketball Club, LLC as vice chairman and, moreover, got canned after he was unable to handle the duties of hiring someone to run the basketball operations department by laughably naming himself to the position — which was a disgrace.

Whether it was pushing Dennis Johnson out of Seattle in 1980, drafting Danny Vranes in lieu of Orlando Woolridge with the 5th pick in the 1981 NBA Draft, being a piss-poor coach/GM during the early-’80s, coming back as an awful color commentator in 2006, and finally as an abject failure once again in the front office, Wilkens did more harm than good in Seattle after 1979.

But sometimes Nate wants them to run

Wasn’t McMillian the coach that was waving his hands and encouraging the guards to start the offense early in the shot clock, if the opportunity was there?

Sure, Brandon Roy plays at a slow pace. So when he’s on the floor (35+ out of 48 minutes) the team won’t run much, unless it has an obvious advantage. Blake is also not likely to penetrate all the way to the rim in transition. So I can see why you’d advocate a white unit running team

But I wouldn’t put it all on Nate and call him a “slow down only” coach. I’d rather add a starting point guard who can run a fast break (when it’s there) and wait and see how Brandon adjusts, before calling for Nate to be replaced with a D’Antoni-type coach. Efficient half court offense is more important in the post season than the transition game, anyway

Thats right

He did want them to start the offense early in the shot clock but i blame that on Blake for it not working. Blake isnt good at driving to the rim and i agree when you say that efficent half court offense in the playoffs is more efficent. I like the idea of having a first team with Brandon and L.A. who can play the half court and then bring a second unit with Bayless and Rudy who can run the floor. So we could have the best of both worlds.

Nate's math doesn't add up here

Fast breaks = layups and dunks. Who cares if there are turnovers thrown in there as well.
3 fast breaks = 1 layup, 1 dunk, and 1 turnover. Despite turning the ball over on 1/3 of your possessions you have an offensive efficiency of 133 points per 100 possessions. Sounds good to me.

oh, just that you make a lot of fan posts

decent content though. Seems like you think about basketball a lot. You should think about starting a blazer blog, generating regular content is one of the keys to a successful blog.
We can always use another (regularly updated) Blazers blog, I hate the ones that go months with no new content.

thanks

I thought you were trying to be rude. I try to post every day or every other day. Most of the time if nothing is happening with my other posts i will delete them and start a new post. How do i start a blazer blog??

I don't think bringing TJ Ford in is a good idea for us.

He has a very poor history with teams and teammates and no real signs that he’s maturing. If he was a player who we thought would be worth risking a cancer in the locker room then he better be one of two things: cheap or really, really good. At 9 million dollars he’s hardly cheap and he isn’t exactly a perennial all-star so he isn’t really a significant upgrade.

He is a winner though

I think he needs a good coach to go along with the winning. Where ever he has gone he hasnt really had a great coach. Nate is clearly the best coach would have played for in the NBA. I think he can clean up his act and i dont think he is a cancer yet. He could be if he does not have any discipline but i think the coaching staff with the blazers would give him the discipline that he needs

by quezadaz on May 15, 2009 5:04 PM PDT up reply actions

curious

what has he shown the the past few years that makes you think he is mature enough to clean up his act?

He hasnt played for a good coach

He hasnt played for a team that that had any discipline. A few years ago wouldnt you say the same thing about Ron Artest. You never really know a guy until you actually know the guy. Im not saying i know him but at least give him a chance to prove you wrong

by quezadaz on May 15, 2009 7:26 PM PDT up reply actions

i wouldnt have given ron artest a chance

a few years ago bc he didnt demonstrate that he could change…he has now, so i’d consider it. why not let ford prove that he can change before we take a chance?

The past 2 years provide sufficient evidence that Travis is not a 3

At least on our team. He can play spot minutes there, but power forward is his forte.

by jaywalker on May 15, 2009 5:14 AM PDT reply actions

Travis is a 3.5

He’s too small at power forward. His vertical makes up for a lot of that but he gets pushed around. Can’t post up, block out or defend against a traditional pf.
