Question- is 3 the small forward?
Ok, I don't know a lot about basketball, I'll admit, did not play, have been a fan for 4 years. This morning on MSP a guy came on, KP2 I think? Thurs morning. He said we need to work on the point, and small forward positions. For the small forward position he mentioned Paul Milsap and Brandon Bass. I thought they were Power forwards, which I though was the 4 position. I also thought that the Small Forward was the 3 position. It seems there has been other discussions here where there is confusion about that. So am I wrong? Whats up? Thank You

The two mentioned players are clearly no small forwards. Bass can play it in stretches, but it's rare
I didn’t hear it, but KP2 would have that wrong. Maybe he meant that they are small/undersized for the power forward position.

Thanks OSUBlazerfan and Norsktroll.
Thats what I thought. It just seemed that in recent discussions of who will go, who will stay, and who will play where, there has been some confusion of what the positions are. I was just surprised to hear that on the radio and thought I might have it wrong. Perhaps he misspoke.
I realize that
one of the things I’ve wondered about is that a lot of people talk about Martel backing up roy at the two. Did he play at the two sometimes last year? Also some talk about Rudy being part of the jam at the 3. I don’t see rudy playing the 3.
His 'natural' position is SF
But he did play the 2 sometimes last season. When Rudy and Roy are in the game, Roy guards the other team’s 3, but Rudy stands in the corner like Nate wants our 3s to do.

I think that's correct
Most draft sites had him as a SG first and SF second. But SF should be his position going forward at least on the Blazers with his wing scoring. And he is barely quick enough to guard the fast SFs, much less SGs.

He's a lot stronger now than when we drafted him
so it makes sense he would have played at the 2 at first. It made it so sad because he was in such good shape to start the year, but its weird to think what would have happened if we never saw Batum start. We might never have known his potential!
When Rudy Fernandez and Brandon Roy do play together Fernandez is the weakside cornerman ...
and Brandon Roy is the ballside wing, so you’re 100% correct on that account. In essence, Fernandez is the 3 on offense and the 2 on defense; conversely, Roy is the 2 on offense and the 3 on defense.
perhaps the positions
will become less meaningful as time goes on. Or they are mostly used for drawing up plays.
Ok, so I looked some stuff up, the numbered positions are needed when you need to differentiate each player for a play, and to define roles. Using “wings” and “post” kind of gives you more freedom, or makes the players more interchangeable. I couldn’t find “cornerman” but it’s self explanitory. I know Nate likes a guy to stand in the corner to receive an outlet pass for a 3, it does sound a little bit boring for the player though.
Thanks for the info.
Martell was drafted as a SG / 2
That was before we got Roy and he moved to the 3 to get playing time last year (07-08).
Rudy is really a 2 as well, but because of Roy tends to go down in the corners and play more of a 3 spot at times when there is a PG in the game.
put a body on 'em
Martell doesn't have the dribbles to be a 2 on a regular basis.
His handle is the weak point of his offensive game. He’ll often get out of control or disoriented trying to get to the cup off the dribble. He’s got a long way to go with that before he’s a legitimate shooting guard.
He’s got athleticism, a great shot, explosiveness, ability to move well w/out the ball (evidenced by this year’s preseason), and is a decent rebounder and improved defender. Plus he’s got enough meat on the bone to play the 3. Rudy doesn’t.
Thank you, I couldn't remember
I like Pelton and of course he would know stuff like that. I don’t read the Tribune so I don’t know Kerry Eggers, but he sounded ill informed.
twggyy, you're correct
Perhaps you should be on the morning show. :)
that would just be sad
but thank you! I would vote for a cast of, Norsktroll for that knowledge and foreign accent, AK1984, also knowledgeable and to add some controversy that a good show would have to have, and Sophia, so all the Players would want to come by and be interviewed by her! I joke.
There should be a Blazersedge Cable access show! I’m not sure, but I don’t think it even takes much money to start one of those. It would be cool to see everyone. Also we could get press passes, and the prizes for contest could be that you get to use one and interview some players or go in locker room or something.
The commentator on the tube is wrong.
The small forward position is being held down just fine. We currently have 3 quality players at that spot. The backup 4 could use an upgrade. Maybe a point, though people are too hard on Blake.
This day and age "3" is the 3rd guard.

Yeah, huh?
Guys who are more interchangeable with a 4 than a 2 are becoming increasingly rare. I can think of a few who are: Shawn Marion, Josh Smith, Rashard Lewis. And 3s who rely on back-to-the-basket play are a dying breed.
