Yes!

I don’t think we’ll get Ricky, but I am ALWAYS up to watching good basketball games.

My favorite teams are the Blazers and any team that is playing the Lakers.

1-TAU
2-FCBarcelona
3-Unicaja
4-Real Madrid
5-Joventut
6-Gran Canaria
7-Pamesa
8-Iurbentia

I’ll join Rudy supporting Joventut, and if I find cheap tickets I’ll go to the 2nd game :D

I hope you can go

If you can you should write up what it was like, not just the game, but the atmosphere and other fans and such. That would be really interesting to many people.

by twggyy on May 15, 2009 7:28 AM PDT up reply actions

I've been to many Joventut games

and I was at the last Joventut-Real Madrid playoff game in ’07, the 4th of a series of 5 that Real Madrid used to tie the series.

Rudy was injured and came off the bench, and Real Madrid players were bullying Ricky all the series, as it was the first time he got to the playoffs (he was 16 if I’m not mistaken).

The atmosphere was amazing. In case you don’t know, Joventut plays at Barcelona ‘92 Olympic Stadium all their home games, and it’s a huge place where they usually open the lower level, but there were so many ticket requests that they had to open the upper ring too, with a small section surrounded by two empty sections for Real Madrid supporters to avoid confrontations. I had a Real Madrid supporter in front of me, mixed with Joventut fans, and he was shouting all the time and people around were looking for other seats to avoid throwing him down.

It was a really hard fought series…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5GwUFK9O9DA
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3f_6FnqytNc

Madrid victories were by 2, 2 and 4 points, and sadly, Rudy in game 1 and Ricky in game 4 both missed shots at the buzzer.

There aren’t as many signs as on NBA games, but there is other entertainment. Joventut, as his name in catalá means, is a youth team. It started as amateurs and then became a basketball school, and during timeouts and halftime, youth teams get on the court to play for a few minutes (usually kids aged around 9-10). Some of those kids become the Rudies and Rickies of the future :)

It’s worth watching

that sounds magnifico

thanks for your perspective. I am glad you got to attend an exciting game and I hope you get to go back this year. – Elgin

VENTURA: It's drowning. It gives you the complete sensation that you are drowning. It is no good, because you -- I'll put it to you this way, you give me a waterboard, Dick Cheney and one hour, and I'll have him confess to the Sharon Tate murders.

by 22baylor on May 15, 2009 11:49 AM PDT up reply actions

wild!

Thats interesting about Joventut. The way all the teams and clubs work over there, it’s hard for me to get the whole picture. I will have to spend some time researching European basketball.
That first video was crazy, I can’t believe how young Rubio was/is! He does seem to know how to work the crowd and refs.
Rudy sure gets knocked around a lot!
Thanks for the info and the vids!

If you have the chance to watch this game, pay some attention to Sergio Llul, another Spanish PG, from Real Madrid. He is not so highly touted as Rubio and he won’t enter this year draft, but he is also fun to watch. Very promising player.

You could have your own blog with all this great stuff.

Love the video from European basketball, something about the music, or the player, or perhaps the editing, I just really like the style. Seems like the video quality is good.
First one was great, I wonder what Gasol was saying when they showed him yelling at Rudy.
From the tiny bit I saw i am interested in seeing more of llull, and many others as well. Thanks!

by twggyy on May 15, 2009 7:44 AM PDT reply actions

You´re right about Llull, he´s an interesting prospect. I´ll add him to the list.

Nicola Mirotic is also a good prospect, but probably won´t play these games because he´s too young and it´s not easy to get playing time in Real Madrid.

"What's so interesting is that this team took on a dynamic that was very special. I don't think we as a group, in terms of management, coaches and players, realize what we did as a young team. We broke all the metrics. We broke all the molds. Our challenge is can we continue to do that. As young of a team with 54 wins, no issues off the court, phenomenal chemistry." - Kevin Pritchard

So Rubio played at the beginning

and they still were not doing well. There were seeded 4 and 5 so one might think it would be closer. I don’t know how much that means here though. Were there previews of this game written up, and did they predict a close game?

There isn’t a doubt about this. He also is the biggest creator of ball movement for DKJ. One thing he doesn’t really do, and this might be a function of being in Europe, is that he doesn’t demand the ball every time down the court.

passing

he almost turned the ball over on an inbounds play after the basket then did turn it over later in the back court. In both cases he looped the ball over head and it was kind of up for grabs. ..
— I saw a low post move… what I liked was he did not let the double team take the ball or deter him, he missed but he had an open shot…

There´s not +/- stats in ACB. Instead there is "val" (valoración), a player efficiency rating , similar to PER.

It´s a per-game rating (nor adjusted per minue), sums up all a player’s positive accomplishments and subtracts the negative accomplishments per game.

by bow4meow on May 17, 2009 7:54 AM PDT reply actions

CliffsNotes version and I only saw the second half and OT. I think Cablinasian wanted to write a summary too

Game: Gran Canaria should be in a good position to advance with the win (best of 3 in this round). They made enough unforced errors that could be avoided. Freeland saw about 19 minutes of action, and didn’t play in OT. He splits about half the minutes with other players and isn’t exactly asked to carry the team.

Offense/General: Able to draw fouls, and convert his free throws at a high rate. Pretty strong, somewhat in between Shav and Channing in built but more explosive. Looks like he would be able to add more muscle. Runs the floor well. Decent post moves and jumpshot if he gets close enough. Doesn’t set good picks. Played with what looked like a very average point guard, a good one should be able to find him better when he is in position to finish around the rim a la our Joel. Still was efficient, like he usually is.

Defense: Sometimes slow to rotate to help a beaten player. He would need to work on that or he will cause fouls. Blocked a shot nicely. Good defensive rebounder, but not dominant.

Readiness: Dani from Barcelona thinks it would be best for him if he continues in Europe and then maybe comes over in the style of Luis Scola when he is in his mid-twenties and has established himself as a top player. Would depend on what the Blazers want out of him now and if they think he could get enough playing time in the NBA + D-League to fully develop, and how much better they could train him here. I could see him as a capable 4/5 player now taking the role of Shav but ultimately could be much better. KP sounded like he wants to see him in summer league and is more inclined to bring him over now before European clubs lock him up long time. His salary would probably be about the same, maybe a little bit more in the NBA at least initially.

I took a bunch of notes for most of his 19 minutes

so I’ll do a Freeland thread tomorrow.

Bottom line, I was impressed. He’s pretty efficient, and has a lot of room to grow. He still has a lot of rough edges to his game, though.

Some comments from Real Madrid – DKV Joventud game from the the arena.

Hi guys, sorry for posting this too late; I was there in game 1 and here you have some thoughts about what I saw.

Not too much to comment about Rubio, just a few observations from the pre-game routine and something about the start of the game. During pre-game, he was hitting jumpers alongside a Lithuanian player named Simas Jasaitis. I can even think of both having a similar shot-mechanics, as incredible as it could seem, watching them together you can feel that they execute pretty similar. Of course Jasaitis is a sharpshooter, has a sweet and fast release, and Rubio is just the opposite, but I think he can learn a lot from him. As I saw, the shot-mechanics was very similar; it’s just that Rubio is not so quick releasing the ball and he has to think about it, it is not yet automated in him. Because of that, he can not use that yet in the games as it was obvious later.

This "problem" is something that I also notice at the start of the game. During the first minutes (until he got injured), I counted some 3 assists and 2 other great passes his team mates didn’t make, but he never tried to score (except one penetration). He had some chances to hit a jumper and he didn’t even try. This alone, allows the defense to float a lot and he is not so effective when he penetrates. From my standpoint, it’s crystal clear, once he is able to hit a jumper, he’ll be a monster. Unfortunately, I could not say anymore about him because of that injury. By the way, he received a warm ovation from Real Madrid fans when he letf the court to the locker-room.

About the game, it was a blow-out in the making, even with Rubio in the floor, much more when he left. Real Madrid was much better as a team; I couldn’t really highlight a single player. If you had the chance to watch the game, you probably had also notice Sergio Llull poise. He made 2 three-pointers, some assists and steals, but mainly, he managed the team like a veteran. His ceiling is not as high as Rubio, but I can tell you, Nate would love to have Sergio Llul instead of Sergio Rodriguez. I couldn’t help but think about that when I saw the intensity he plays with.

I hope you all enjoy ACB play-offs as we do!

Yeah that's a great way to put it

He had 16 pts, 7 rebounds, 6 assists, 4 steals, 6 Turnovers, and did this in 30 minutes. Oh, and DKV won. They got blown out by 30 for most of the game without him.

I think Ricky Rubio can play.

Highlights from the game

http://www.marca.com/2009/05/18/baloncesto/acb/1242678026.htm

Video is embedded on that link, and the commentator is kind of annoying, but Rubio had some amazing highlights there, including a behind the back assist from halfcourt! (it sounds weird, but makes a lot mroe sense after you watch it, haha)

Is there a way to get this back to the top of fanpost?

There are 3 games on today! I am going to try to turn one on while I work on my computer at work. Lucky Its a family owned business, and i am the family!
Animart1, are you going to try to find links to all games? Or do you have a game that is of most interest to you? A recommended game of the day perhaps! Thank you very much for all of this.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
