You Be The GM: Jerryd Bayless/Epic basketball-reference fail by Henry
The blogfather contributes the oregonlive entry for Jerryd, however, he messes up the sorting algorithm to generate his "list of similar players", which, given his rather lengthy list of criteria is fairly restrictive.

OMG!
that is quite the blunder, hehe. I can forgive the blogfather. Maybe your corrected list will show people why Bayless is not untouchable though.

God Shammgod has a funny name.
I don’t really like these criteria though. It doesn’t adjust for minutes, which is pretty big IMO for rookies and really young guys in general. Westbrook has 2500+ minutes, Bayless has 600+ minutes, and the other three had less than 200 minutes. The sample size is also just five.
I don’t think Bayless should be untouchable. He wasn’t productive in his rookie year, which is always a let down even if it doesn’t always say much about where a guy will be in his prime. However, I doubt he’d be able to fetch much return in a trade anyway since he wasn’t productive and has a tiny contract.

Also, it should be noted
that relaxing the FG% requirement to 45% adds some of those bigger, more impressive names to the list. Everything else equal but with a FG% under 45 gives you Isiah, AI, Arenas, and Marbury (who might have the MOST similar rookie season in addition to Bassy) to the list.

lol
Henry totally screwed up the low FG% criteria. Good stuff.

Henry Henry
respectfully blogfather but you cannot compare a 2nd year Telfair to a 1st year Bayless. Yes their stats are similar if you use that scenario, however you have to look at the amount of minutes that Bayless got vs Telfair 655 vs 1631. There has been much debate about players getting spot minutes and their shooting %s from those limited minutes, especially with a jumpshot.
If you look at Bayless’ #s in the 10 games where he played 20+ mins, he averaged
26.3min
46.8%fg
18%3pt
11pts
3.5ast
1.4to
2.1reb
Everything is pretty good for a rookie except his 3pt%, but it is especially difficult for a elite college player (almost 20ppg, on 45.8%FG and 40.7%3pt% against the TOUGHEST schedule, overall and D) to come onto a winning team and have to go from carrying your team to having to be expected to know when and where to pick your shot and when to pass, which he does not have right now, I will concede.
My contention is that the problem is not in his release, his elevation or anything like that but it is all in his head.
So many times you saw Bayless standing wide open at the 3pt line with Roy/LMA/Oden/Travis in the game and his man off him and you could almost see the wheels turning in his head about what to do.
“Should I shoot it?? What if I miss?? Will Joel yell at me again?? OK just dribble in to see if I can get to the rim and then pass out.”
He does not have that freedom that Mayo, Westbrook or Agustin have on a losing team to shoot, shoot, shoot until you know what a good shot is and all he has to do is get consistent minutes in Nates rotation and he will find that place next year.
No longer will there be that labored, mechanical decision making process on whether or not to shoot, pass or drive, it will be
“My mans off me, let this 3pter fly into the hole, BOOM!! and the crowd goes wild”
I do not see much difference between the role that Bayless can play vs the man we traded him for, Jack. Roy and Jack worked well together 2 years ago and Bayless had similar #s to Jack on a 36 min basis even as a rookie.
You stated in the piece that having a speedy quick PG used to be rare but now is becoming a valuable weapon. I look at our options either via the draft, or via trade and see that our best chance to get one of those type Gs is to develop Bayless. He is immensely coachable, extremely athletic, and has an insatiable drive to get better. The only thing we need to do is let him play.

yeah, you don't go from being a 40 percent 3 shooter in college to a 25 in the pros
TheTinfoil: Prez, could we please get Fatty on one of these [podcasts]?
annthefan: Fatty would be awesome! Get him on there with Timbo. Now, that's entertainment.
pualo: Nah, Timbo would just talk to himself the whole time.

When you adapt the criteria a bit, you also get players Kyle Lowrie, Jacque Vaughn and Darrell Armstrong on the list
Still not too stellar.

it was a terrible statistical season
there’s no nice way to say it.

Sure there is!
Bayless was smart enough to leave his statistical game lots of room for improvement. That way, he has a better shot at MIP next year.

Just for fun, I ran Sergio through with some of his stats...
I used the same essential setup as henry and then used assists per 36 minutes, turnovers per 36, steals per 36, and total rebounds per 36. Its a pretty nice list…
