Looking for help overseas - Part II: Power Forwards
Power Forward is the position where an international free agent could fit better because whoever comes is expected to come off the bench, and probably won't have a lot of playing time, so picking up some guy who can bang and provide some intensity off the bench for a fair price could be a great move.
These are the Power Forwards who are ready to contribute
Felipe Reyes, A.K.A. Gladiator, 29, 6'9", Real Madrid
ACB Stats: 28min, 16.3pt, 54.9 2pt%, 71.7 ft%, 9.4Reb (3.8Off), 1.8As, 1.3St, 0.3Bk
ACB's regular season MVP is a well established star in Europe who's never had much consideration for NBA. He's an important member of the spanish national team, with a World Championship and an Olympic silver medal, and he proves his toughness on a daily basis. Despite his size, he's a great rebounder, specially on the offensive end. He doesn't have as many offensive moves as Scola, but he's tougher and a better rebounder, and creates many of his points off his amazing offensive rebounding ability.
Way to get him: Signing him. A 3Mill/year 3 year deal, with (at least) another spanish player on the roster and the challenge of playing on the NBA could work. Also Rudy will spend the summer with him playing with the national team, he could talk him into signing.
Fran Vazquez, 26, 6'10", FC Barcelona
ACB Stats: 22min, 12pt, 70.6 2pt%, 76.9ft%, 6.6reb (2.3Off), 0.7As, 1st, 1.6bk
31.9PER, ACB's 1st in fg%, 4th in boards, 1st in bk/48min. ¿Anything else?
Way to get him: Good news and bad news. The bad ones: Orlando Magic still hold his rights, so a trade is needed. The good ones: as a 1st round pick he'd have a rookie scale salary of about 2Mill.
Marcus Haislip, 28, 6'10", Unicaja Malaga
ACB Stats: 28min, 16.5pt, 55.4 2pt%, 41.9 3pt%, 83.5 ft%, 5.2reb (1.3Off), 0.5as, 0.8st, 1.1bk.
Former lottery pick who was cutted after two years by the Bucks. Still the same athletic guy, but with a brand new offensive repertoire. It took him long to develop, but he's ready now. Reminds me of Antoine Walker.
Way to get him: After the Bucks not picking their option he signed for a season with Indiana, and now he's a free agent, so a nice offer should be enough.
Yiannis Bouroussis, 25, 6'11", Olympiakos
Combined Greece & Euroleague stats: 21min, 12pt, 65 2pt%, 33.3 3pt%, 69.3ft%, 7.2reb (2.2Off), 0.8as, 0.6st, 0.7bk
He's been flirting with the idea of playing on the NBA for a couple of years now. He still has margin to improve. Okur/Troy Murphy kind of big.
Way to get him: He's a free agent and he wants to get to the NBA. 2-3Mill/Year should be enough.
vs Cibona (with Childress's afro sights)
There are other players who could be useful, such as Tiago Splitter, who does everything excepth shooting, but his rights are held by San Antonio, Henk Norel, who some people say is the next Pau Gasol, but still has a lot to improve (draft elegible, a good late 2nd to let develop in Europe), and Milan Macvan, a crafty 6'9" PF/C who is expected to be around the first half of the second round.
More ideas?

Joel Freeland's numbers look pretty good
My sense is that those who have watched him don’t think he’s ready… but his statistics suggest he might be a decent option off the bench and at least worth a look in training camp.
i liked what i saw from reyes
in the olympics but i gotta wonder why he never got nba consideration? especially after how he played in the olympics. as far as Bouroussis(i had to copy and paste that one) we don’t need another outside shooting big(just going off the description)
"Howard, he know me" Rudy
He's the most intruiging out of this bunch
i bet he could shoot, which brings the goodness part of the buffet of goodness without the inability to rebound.
Yellow Mamba FTW!
NBA people (scouts, coaches,...) think Reye´s too small for the NBA.
Probably people remember the play in the Olympics Final when Rudy missed a three from the corner and Reyes got the rebound, passed the ball to Rudy and the Blazer shot again from the same spot and knocked it down. In that play Reyes was the meat of a sandwich which bread was made of Howard and Lebron, both very close to Reyes and both failing to get the rebound. Reyes was also the worst Scola´s nightmare when the Argentinian played in the ACB. I´m not so sure Reye´s not NBA material.

the problem with reyes is
that he’s making a lot of money in Madrid (2mil/year), plus he’s the captain of the team. And the NBA scouts have always thought that he’s a couple of inches too short to play PF/C (which is the position he usually plays in Real Madrid). Plus last year he said: “Playing in the NBA is a dream for any player. But I’ve just signed an extension with RM, I’m pretty happy and I’m not considering playing in any other place than here, where I expect to finish my BB career. I’ve come to terms with the fact that if I have not yet gone to the NBA, it’s really difficult that I go now.”
I’m with you though. I think he would be a great rotation player, ready to contribute, full of energy and hustle, has a great mid-range jumper, and a pair of cojones the size of the Rose Garden. But I just don’t think he would come on over.
Reyes
Is better than Garbajosa in many ways, and Garbo was a legitimate player for the Raptors. Size might off course be a problem, but it’s hard to say up to what extent in this case.
Ben seemed to like Milan Macvan and his soft touch in the Hoops Summit. Milan will be in the Rebook Eurocamp where the Blazers will be represented
- I don’t think the Spurs will give up Splitter unless it is in a package for Batum. They need him in 2010
- You probably watched Vazquez much more than me, but he looked completely outmatched in the Euroleague Final Four. Even David Andersen was more convincing (Hawks), and David is likely too old to ever come to the NBA and more of an Okur type. If Orlando would accept Sergio or picks for him it could be worth it, but not sure they would.
- Haislip could probably have been a rotation NBA player, I never really understood why his teams didn’t keep him to develop. He was incredibly raw, but very athletic a la Tyrus Thomas and now seems to have developed a much better offensive arsenal and better ball handling (I remember he had a comically low rating in video games for his dribbling).
- Bouroussis didn’t look 6’11’’ to me, but I liked how active he was against Pekovic and Batiste in the game against Panathinaikos with his wide body. Not sure his skills would be useful against NBA players in the post, but would be worth it for scouts to study some of his tapes or work him out. Maybe a good option for Toronto or another team that really needs a big presence under the basket? And most top Greek players in the past in the NBA seemed to get homesick real quick :)
- I have not seen Norel play enough to have my own opinion on him, but you hear good things about him.
Two long-shot options not named: French players Ludovic Vaty (whose club just was relegated to the second league in France, so he needs a new employer) and Kevin Seraphin who was in Portland for the Hoops Summit. Vaty is efficient under the basket but likely needs more seasoning to develop his repertoire and his body, if you bring him over too early you get the same problems Charlotte has with Ajinca now. Seraphin could ultimately be the more talented one, but could also benefit from staying at home for 2 more years since he is only 19.
I would expect the Blazers to bring over Freeland to summer league to take a long look at him, but in addition rather go for a US power forward in draft or free agency than an international vet or young project unless someone really convinces them.

Macvan in the Hoops Summit
was really impressive. I remember being surprised. He might have been one of the biggest factors in the world team winning.
