i'm so bias

when Sergio says he wants more time i’m like: well earn it!!! Learn to shoot or play defense!!!!

when Rudy says he wants more time i’m like: now there’s a guy that knows what he wants. I like his attitude.

He will get insured - and that was that.

Same with Yao, Dirk, Manu, Deng, the Team USA players …
If the player wants to play, the team can make a headstand but it won’t change it unless they want a really disgruntled player. If the player gets tired or even injured – god forbid – that is too bad, but a number of players see that as equally important to being an NBA player.

Europeans

tend to be more direct in their statements. I don’t think this is really said as a threat as it would tend to sound if an American said it.

Besides, I don’t think Portland is dumb enough to flat out tell him he can’t play for his national team.

It will be in September

With maybe a few preparation games in August (3-5). Then again maximum of 9 games in the actual tournament.

That is manageable, and he won’t have played apart from training in May, June, July.

It's funny to see NBA players ask permission to their team

In other sports like soccer, if the national team wants a player, the team has to give him away. Clubs always complain about this but they finish by sending the player to the national team.

But if Batum was allowed to be in the national team early in the season, Rudy will play too (the only thing is France isn’t qualified yet and Spain will probably go further in the tournament)

but in soccer

they have weird tournaments and competitions throughout the year.

Yellow Mamba FTW!

by northwestj on May 15, 2009 5:25 AM PDT up reply actions

but

they never get to play as many games as a nba team. The regular season is usually 38 games (20 teams), then you have the national cup/s, wich should add up to 10 games, depending on the teams performance, and then finally there are the european competitions, wich few teams get to play.
The most extreme example would be Manchester United and Barcelona this year. both of them have just won their respective leages (english and spanish, and actually both of them today), 38 games, they also won the cups I think, at least Barcelona did, and that adds 9 games up till the final. And then the European Champions League; 13 more games; 60 games, and most teams only get to play 40-42, depending on how soon do they lose at the cup competition.

You would have to ask a Spanish fan

He has to beat out Raul Lopez and Sergio Lull, who both play at home where their national coach can see them all the time.

the funny thing is

Scariolo (Spanish head coach) is also Khimki’s coach (a Russian team), so he spends quite more time in Moscow than Madrid…

I think he has a pretty good chance. He’ll probably take three PG, Calderon and Rubio will the first two. Lopez is pretty much in the mold of Calderon, with Llull being a more fast-tempo, high energy player. But he’s also pretty young, and this is the first season he’s played regularly at top level (ACB and Euroleague), so I believe Scariolo will go for Sergio for the third option, with maybe inviting Llull to the reserve list and training sessions (don’t know how the selection process is in the US, here they pick 15 first and then the final 12). Another contender for the spot could be Cabezas, so the roster choice is going to be really interesting.

In a recent interview, Scariolo said that PG is the only position where there’s a high level of competition in the Spanish team, with a lot of good players vying for the roster spots, and that he would make the choice not only based on the individual quality of the players, but also on the fit in the team as a whole.

by medmelon on May 13, 2009 1:05 AM PDT up reply actions

I agree with you.

1.- Calderon. I´m not sure wether he will resign or not. Toronto doesn´t want him playing this summer considering their bad season and Calderon´s injuries.
2.- Ricky Rubio.
3.- Sergio Rodríguez.

"They didn't know it was impossible, so they did it"

by amlmart1 on May 13, 2009 4:06 AM PDT up reply actions

I hope Sergio makes it

But I’m afraid his only chance is Calderon giving up. Calderon and Rubio will be there for sure, and Lull and Lopez just completed a good season (they both have been the only good players along with Reyes and Bullock in Real Madrid), Lull and Rubio beeing the future PGs of the spanish national team Scariollo might want to try to play them together. Raul Lopez has probably had his best season since his injury and there is allways Cabezas, a reliable PG who might (I don’t think so) play next season in the NBA.
And then off course goes Sergio, I don’t really know exactly in wich position, but I assume he has better chances than Lull and the other 2 have the same options than him.

“Why aren’t Rudy and Sergio dedicating themselves to Blazer basketball!? All this national team nonsense is taking away time they could be using to become a better NBA player instead of a FIBA player. Rudy will never be sixth man of the year with an attitude like this!”

I’m still just flabbergasted at how so many people could be upset with Greg for wanting to take some classes, as if the guy can’t train his mind and body at the same time. Yeesh.

I want to see G.O. in the off-season

- Get a giant-sized road bicycle and ride at least 20 miles a day to build stamina
- Watch lots and lots of game tape of his play as well as that of past great centers
- Work with Mo Lucas on his game – especially the whole ‘not fouling out’ thing
- Have some fun!

by DonkeyShins on May 13, 2009 8:39 AM PDT up reply actions

Oden might fall and get hurt or do what B Roy did and mess up his minuscus from all the mashing. Plus nobody wants to see Oden in spandex.

Not sure why Rudy even felt like he had to say this

But in case it needs saying, memo to Blazer managment, you cannot have Euro stars on the team and think you can tell them not to play for their national team because you will have no Euro stars pretty quick, you cant have it both ways.

There´s been a recent sad story regarding Garabajosa, who wanted to play in the last European Championship, and the Raptors, who didn´t, including some unpleasant incidents with the Spanish National Basketball Federation.

It´s been followed by more problems regarding Pau Gasol and José Calderón and their teams.

That´s why the Spanish sport media asks players about it.

On the positive side, players get a lot of experience and confidence when playing for the National Team. I expect Sergio to have a wonderful championship this summer. I hope we don´t trade him before that championship, it would be a big mistake.

Fine by me

Rudy is not like Yao where playing during the summer is going to affect him during the season.

"The brownies,'' Fernandez said after the game. "The brownies are good for me to make three-points.''

by Sabonis4Ever on May 12, 2009 7:55 PM PDT reply actions

It's Marca

It’s the worst (yet the most readed) newspaper in Spain. Their spanish nationalism is near fascism (it’s something that goes with any spanish sport announcer, sports are the only thing we can be proud of), so I would expect Rudy to have said that in a much more gentle way, he probably meant that, but not with that words…

by Ristlin on May 12, 2009 10:54 PM PDT reply actions

Agreed

I read Marca every now and again and they tend to … mislead, I guess would be the word. There is a reason everyone in Spain thinks Nate is a terrible coach even though we just won 54 games with the youngest roster in the NBA.

I’m not worried, guys play ball in the summer anyway, and it’s only a few games, many of which Spain will blow out the competition. Plus, in the Olympics, Spain ran a very deep rotation, it was almost perplexing at times. So if it’s anything like that he should be fine and plenty rested for next year.

by LOOSH on May 13, 2009 2:13 AM PDT up reply actions

Another valid point.

This would be highly comparative to last years Olympics.

by dpnim on May 13, 2009 4:15 AM PDT up reply actions

Of course the Blazers will let him play for Spain

If they don’t let Rudy play for his national team, then they will have to stop Batum from playing for France, stop Roy, Aldridge, and Oden from playing for USA, and they will have to stop Freeland and Koponen from playing for UK and Finland when/if they come to the NBA . That will make all those players unhappy, and those players might decide that they would be better off playing for a different team that was more sensitive to their needs.
