The 5/11 Aaron Brooks Red Suit Junk Drawer Edition

Props to Brooks for busting out the bowtie. I was impressed. He is now a viable option at point guard after that move. That sealed the deal.

I was just in Oregon for the first time this year this last weekend. I was in a wedding. It was nice weather. It was a lovely ceremony. Laurelhurst has too many hippies. that was a nice group of single statements in a row.

Maybe its just me, but I am not sold on the "ZOMG! WE HAVE TO DRAFT DEJUAN BLAIR!!!" camp. I like the kid, don't get me wrong. But I don't think moving up is somethign we have to do. If he falls to us, take him, but I don't really see the need to move up much in the draft. I would rather get a free agent to fill the backup PF role. There are some good ones out there. I have seen too many guys just like him flame out. Not to say he will but i have seen it happen.

go ahead disagree with me.. i dare you..

Looks like its from the Fonzworth Bentley line to me

Just needs a custom Rocket-logo parasol to complete it.

In the article he says Chuck Hayes tricked him into wearing it… The jacket anyway

saw an interview with battier today

talking about how he wore it earlier this season and no one was loving it, but since Brooks did it now Brooks has style. It was very funny.
Battier seems like a nice guy

sidenote: Brooks would need a burberry umbrella. thats the only kind that works for Bentley Farnsworth

by GreatOden'sRaven on May 11, 2009 1:07 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Battier seems to be the epitome of class

It seems like hes the ying to Artest’s yang, sorta balancing him out (although Artest has impressed me immensely recently). After listening to him in the huddle before the last game I was ready to go out and give up my 6 fouls against Kobe

I think its the bow tie that pulls the outfit together though. Burberry would be awesome

Sounds nice but not the epitome

The epitome of class is not someone who steals the other teams signals and spends all game staring at their bench.

That jacket is a Rockets jacket, complete with a Rockets logo on the front pocket

All the media guys for the Rockets were wearing it during round one, Bill Worrell, Clyde, and Matt Bullard, who are the local TV guys, John Paul Stevenson, the PA Announcer, and the rest of the guys that sit on the table located on the floor.

Apparently this was another act of looseness shown by the Rockets throughout the playoffs.

“I got kind of tricked a little bit,” Brooks told Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle. “We all have these red jackets. One of the players (Chuck Hayes(notes)) wrote on the board it was mandatory to wear them. I figured if I had to wear a jacket like this, I was going to go all out and make it look real ridiculous.”

Game 1 100-92 Rockets
Game 2 111-98 lakers
Game 3 108-94 lakers
Game 4 99-87 Rockets (kind of)

Series tied 2-2

Counter-question from yesterday: Why should Jordan Hill be a top 5 prospect? All his numbers are worse than Blair's

Hill 53% FG vs blair 59%. 20 points vs. 21 points per 40 minutes pace adjusted vs. 23. Comparable FT shooting. 13 vs. 18 boards (again adjusted). More blocks for Blair. Much more steals. Less turnovers. Blair 2 full years younger.

That all points towards Blair as the better prospect. But Hill is a few inches little taller and looks remotely like Chris Bosh. And thus DraftExpress, NBAdraft.net and others have him going 4?

Yes Blair could turn out to be the next Mike Sweetney, Sean May, you name your favorite guy with weight issues. That’s why he likely won’t go high in the lottery unless a team falls completely in love with him. But he could be well worth it to move up a bit and take him in the middle of the first round. If he drops 20 pounds respectively converts them into muscle, he would be unstoppable in a combo with Joel. Opposing teams could just stop trying to get rebounds :)

In 5-10 years, a lot of those GM's will be on the sidelines

The majority of NBA owners keep close tabs on what’s working. Much in the way that we’d have seen 10 Suns clones if they’d won the 2006 (or 05, 07, or 08) title, we’ll see an increasing number of moneyball-type GM’s if it continues to show success.

by GreatOden'sRaven on May 11, 2009 1:03 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Married life feels fine!

The weirdest part is saying “my wife”. Was engaged for years, so used to saying “fiancee” or “that fat whore who is sucking me dry”.

The planning for the wedding and prepping for it was the worst thing ever, but the weddin’ itself went great and the honeymoon was awesome. My ring is pretty rad, I think it looks like something that would be in the background of a cockpit in a space ship in the original Star Wars trilogy. It’s adamantium, I’m pretty sure, and forged out of a meteor that hit a volcano and foiled a kidnapping.

I’ll put pics up sometime… maybe. MAYBE.

I wore my headband for certain parts of the reception, and my toes were painted red and black. We still lost, so imagine how bad we woulda’ done if I hadn’t done ANY of it!!

The weirdest part is saying "my wife".

I’m still struggling with that one! We haven’t been married that long, but I still can’t adjust to that.

Of course, it didn’t help that the county lost our marriage license in the mail, so we finally just got it fixed. As in, earlier today, 9+ months after the wedding.

So now it’s official. :)

Apparently I was way fatter when I got married

A few months after my wedding, my ring would just fall off after I’d wash my hands at work. It’s really cold here. I had a rubber band on it like it was my boyfriend’s class ring and then just gave up and stopped wearing it. I keep thinking I’m going to get down under 180 and then get it resized but I can’t seem to get under 180.

I don’t blame Jake for not thinking much of Brooks, the whole world didn’t. It gives credence to Houston’s numbers, that they saw sumthin’ in Brooks that was more than an undersized SG.

I saw something wrong in my comments, but not too awful considering how much time has passed— I said Green and Durant were both SFs, when only Durant is. I think Green is definitely best at the PF spot, as a new agey kind of PF.

I'm a U of O fan so I've always liked Brooks

It’s kind of why I like Bayless. Brooks was quick, short, and super cocky when he started for four years at U of O. In his final year he was quick, short, and a leader. I’d rather have Bayless a year on the bench than not be able to get him this draft because he played two years of college. Two years from now Bayless will be better than Brooks is now.

I do appear to have underrated Brooks

I still don’t think he’s that good, incidentally (bit of a ballhog and doesn’t look for Yao enough— below average starting PG for sure), but for a late first round pick, he’s done quite well. I guess Darryl Morey is one of the NBA’s best GMs for a reason. Maybe if I had access to the numbers he crunches, I would have thought differently.

Overall, I’m pretty comfortable with how I’ve evaluated players on this site compared with a lot of posters but I’m sure you could find plenty of other bad predictions in my comment history.

UPDATE ON THE TRADE RUMOR: Jason Quick says the accurate trade is Zach Randolph, Dan Dickau, and Freddie Jones for Steve Francis and Channing Frye. He says he believes the deal is done but he is waiting for confirmation from Kevin Pritchard to go to print.

TRADE IS ANNOUNCED ON ESPN…Standing ovation in Knick land (obviously).

Watch out for Stephen A. Smith reaction.

There’s GOT to be another aspect to this, right? This was the best offer we could get for Zach? Here’s my theory: Commissioner Stern comes to KP a month ago and says, “We’re going to rig the first pick for you but you have to help the Knicks.” That’s the only thing I can think of right now.

American health care is messed up

I went to the emergency room in Pascagoula, Mississippi when I was on vacation, I waited three and a half hours to get in. Then they put me in a room, I waited 10 minutes, then a doctor came in and spent about 7 minutes and all he did was look in my mouth and say he was going to give me some pills for nausea and diarrhea. 10 minutes later, some lady came in and made me take two pills and gave me about six more. They gave me a couple of prescriptions the next day that I had to pay for.

My doctor bill.

Drugs/Other – $19.80
Emerg Room – $518.00
Drugs/Detail Code $241.70

Total = $779.50

I got insurance so it should cover it, I just got to pass on the bill. No way in hell my visit was worth more than $100.00, I don’t care how many degrees that doctor had who looked at my tongue.

What gets me

is that if you have surgery you get a 15% discount if you don’t have insurance (I had a son just go through this). What is that about? Why?

Brandon Roy, 'nuff said.

by johnv59 on May 11, 2009 4:43 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

It really cuts both ways

because most insurance companies have negotiated maximums on what they have to pay for different procedures, which are less (sometimes significantly so) than the regular hospital charges.

A 15% discount might just about even things out – the hospital charges an uninsured patient the full rates but gives them the discount – or it charges insured patients the lesser amount their insurance company has negotiated to pay.

Waited for 45 mins in the waiting room (he was late). Finally got called in, waited another 20 mins in the examination room. He came in, looked me over, left about 8 mins later. Charged me $358.00 for it all. It was unreal.

I have a friend who gave birth while at UC San Diego on a doctoral research project, and there were some complications

She is Swiss, and was a bit surprised when they presented her with a $50,000 bill. Some frantic phone calls home to get her insurance and the university (their hospital!) to foot that :) Unheard of in Europe, even if you have private health insurance like I do.

It just seems so outrageous

Who’s the bad guy who is getting rich off all of this? I’ve heard of doctors that don’t pay their student loans.

There has got to be a scam in all of it too. My guess is that hospitals got something going on and they help cover the cost of the uninsured by over charging the insured. Insurance companies got something going on because they’re only paying insurance on the folks that get sick. I know folks with insurance who haven’t been to the doctor in over 10 years.

Bingo. We already pay, when you add it all up, enough for good universal coverage for every one.

When you add in the deferred costs – say the cost of sending a mentally ill person to prison for ten years instead of treating him, or the cost of hideous surgeries that could have been prevented by early care – you can make a good argument that we could provide every one here good quality health care from cradle to grave for significantly less aggregate money that we are paying now, and people could still get rich providing it.

The problem is that american are all in favor of socialized bombing the shit out of brownskinned people in poor countries, but throw up in their mouths at the thought that their tax dollars might be used to give the toddler next door some anitbiotics.

I know that Sicko has a certain bias like all Michael Moore movies, but it did at least provide illustrative examples that something in the health care system is really screwed up compared to other developed nations

I like the Japanese system: Once central administration, you pay everything yourself up to about $1000, and on top of that costs are distributed via taxes so it’s about according to your income/wealth.

The system here is a bit more screwed up. Too many insurers who offer the exact same benefits. That’s not an efficient model, since every company has to pay an administration, directors, etc. And private insurers who are more efficient and offer better coverage can only insure wealthier people, and they push the limit up again and again.

I knew someone who gave birth in Germany

She had a basic C-section and was in the hospital for almost two weeks (vs. 3 days in the US). She felt pretty pampered, and even got a little stir crazy by the end. I can’t remember what the bill was — it was low — and she says that she’s going to have all of her babies in Germany.

They are also trying to move people faster out of hospitals and do more things ambulant now in most European systems

But basic coverage is still good. And about everybody has them, even if you don’t have a job. So the first question a doctor asks when you come to a hospital is usually not “do you have insurance”.

That happened to me once

I called the hospital and asked for a detailed bill, and they sent me a line-by-line listing of what they were charging me for. It went on for about 20 pages. One of the items was a $6.00 kotex pad. First of all folks, that’s a hefty markup. Second of all, just because I’m a woman you think you can sneak that onto the bill?? So I called and complained and got my six bucks taken off.

Last time I took my daughter to the doctor, they billed a 99205, which basically means the kid is on her death bed. We took her in for constipation. After writing letters to the Insurance Commissioner, Better Business Bureau, and Health Insurance company I got a personal letter from the president of the company apologizing for hosing me. Knowledge is power.

Anyway, email me if you want bill hep.

lol...

you insurance probably won’t pick up a dime of it if you’re not seeing your provider.

and they new it after about the first 5 min of you being there….. the first thing they do once they get a hold of your policy number is call/email the company your using and make sure they’re gonna get paid, they were probably told that they would get the “out of network” payments, and …well….lol….just put you on the back burner once they found out you weren’t a paying customer.

and I agree its insanity …. insurers should be required by law to do what they claim they are there for, PAY DOCTORS for healthcare…… nope not part of your plan…you’re skrewed…

did you know most people pay insurance companies to insure a kyropractor..(forgive my spelling but one of them dudes that cracks your back) ???? lol….uh…… yeah but some kinds of cancer are not covered by most insurers?…

did you also know that the average american doesnt know what a deductible is? nor a premium?

so until we all say skrew that…….. healthcare will stay insane.

I have a better idea. I"ll get me 10,000 dollars… bury it. and in the event that I ever need to go to the hospital….I’ll tell the doctor who’s bed I’d have died in…where the moneys at provided he’s able to save me he’ll get paid….right?. now if everyone did that….. lol….

He is the unanimous ROY and we’re in the WCF.

If he adds nuthin’ but being in shape and stay out of foul trouble (two of the most controllable things a player can improve on), he’s a great center. He will definitely add a lot more than just those two things.

Bottom line, he will be great.

here in Vancouver

it’s just horrible. One local realtor was trumpeting to her clients that the market was picking up, claiming that “more homes were selling now than at any point in the last year.” Of course, she neglected to mention that the homes are selling because the market is absolutely flooded with foreclosures.

yeah it's not too great...but not as bad as some areas

things are moving somewhat…the Tri Cities area is in a bit of a protected bubble for two reasons…

1) prices were already dirt cheap. developed quarter acre lots in city limits on nice property can be had for 30k…very cheap.
2) we have hanford. the nuclear site is getting billions in obama aid so that keeps us afloat. thousands of new jobs are being made out there, so it keeps housing clicking along here

Vancouver is horrid though. I have a friend down there who is co-owner of a homebuilding company and they are just getting wasted.

by Timmay! on May 12, 2009 12:31 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah

it was an area of such rapid growth in the last four years… everything got too big too soon. The interest-only loans only fueled the housing market, pushing it to absolutely unreal levels. Pop.

There are million dollar homes sitting vacant all through the Camas/Washougal area. Dozens and dozens of them. Numerous housing companies are bankrupt because they couldn’t sell their mansions. When banks tried to get rid of the homes, selling them for cheap, it was just one more blow to the housing market. It’s ridiculously hard to sell a home in Clark County. I know people who have had their home on the market since September ’07.

But you’re right, even without special skills, at least the lower levels have been do-able so far. I’m waiting until it makes me learn special moves, or else it just keeps beating me.

by Timmay! on May 12, 2009 12:20 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

well, there is that 1-2-3 meter special move thing you have

if you have 1, you can do a special steal or special spin…..i think it’s left trigger + X to do it.

if you have level 2, you press left trigger, right trigger, and B i think and it makes a crazy shot for you (3 pointer I think)…

if you have level 3 (which i never get)….you can do some kind of power dunk that automatically wins you the game or something….still haven’t figured out how to GET to level 3 yet though haha. I did it once in the story mode…they started me out at level 2 though.

Want to hear something gross?

For the past year or so, I’ve had this little nub in my left ear. If I put a finger in my ear, I could feel it in my ear canal. I would try to ignore it, except when I was sleeping, I’d dig at it with my finger. Digging at it with my finger would scratch up my ear and then I would get ear leakage. It got to be so bad that I started sleeping with cotton in my ear and keeping my fingernails short to keep from scratching my ear.

Two days ago, I was at work and my left ear was really itching so I jammed a pen in there to really get it and when I pulled out the pen it was all bloody. Then I used my finger and the little nub came out. It was opaque was shaped like a periwinkle, all bumpy, and about the size of half a grain of rice. I took it home to show my wife and it dried up and looked like a tiny pork rind so I didn’t take a photo of it. The best part is that my ear hasn’t itched since then.

I was wondering and looking for other peoples thoughts

What are the chances that the Rockets try to trade Brook’s? I mean he has got to have a fair bit of trade value. Some GM’s put a ton of stock in playoff performance. The Rockets have a better distributer in Lowry. Brook’s, while being very solid, is defenitely getting some of his points from playing against older slower PG’s (Blake and Fisher). I wonder if this is a case of dealing a guy while his stock is highest? Would the Blazers want the guy? Doesn’t seem like McMillan is too fond of combo gaurds though.

by Escrote on May 12, 2009 9:10 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

The Blazers might want him but no way the Rockets let him go

He’s probably turning into a fan favorite and he was a late draft pick so he’s cheap.

by tominhawaii on May 12, 2009 9:14 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Thats a good point but keep in mind that Blake and Fisher have been making Brooks look good.

Remember how much GM’s coveted Posey after last year? How did that work out? Obviously Brooks has way more upside than Posey but the path of combo gaurds int he NBA can be a strange one. I am just sating that GM’s might inflate Brook’s value and there might be some smoking deals out there for the Rockets. But you are probably right.

In any case, I no longer have a direct connection to the school, and I have nothing to do with their ebay posting. It’s a brand new ebay account, and I cannot guarantee anything. But everything I know about them indicates it’s legit, and kinda cool!

someone should call the school and find out if they're really doing this thing.

TheTinfoil: Prez, could we please get Fatty on one of these [podcasts]?
annthefan: Fatty would be awesome! Get him on there with Timbo. Now, that's entertainment.
pualo: Nah, Timbo would just talk to himself the whole time.

Here's what I got (from the volunteer coordinator):

“Hi Ann – It is totally legit and being done by students. I have the
email address of the student [private email deleted] She contacted the Blazers and got a ball. …

On a side note we are looking for people to donate food to the prom, at the last minute our
chef couldn’t do it So if people don’t want to buy the ball but like to bake cookies: ) let me know. "

So, go buy the ball. Or if you want to bake some cookies, send me (Section323) an email at ann8001 AT hotmail.com

Glad you reposted that

I have a soft spot in my heart for Open Meadow.

I saw that fanpost but didn't get to read it

Why would it be flagged?

"The brownies,'' Fernandez said after the game. "The brownies are good for me to make three-points.''

I think it was because it looked like a straight advertisement

A few people basically started flagging it, then posting comments like “don’t post stuff like that here!”. I had to stay out of that thread to not make snarky comments at a few folks, who were living in glass houses.

This is the first I’ve heard it’s for charity though. Glad to hear. I’ll check the auction out.

The Best John Canzano Parody Ever! (Aaron Brooks edition)

Trouble is, it was written by Canzano hisself. It starts out in typical overly-dramatic fashion:

We met in secret, more than three years ago, in a coffee shop in Eugene on a Saturday morning. Aaron Brooks had to be careful about who saw him chatting me up. He pulled up in a dark-colored SUV. He arrived alone, wore a baseball cap and drank nothing as we sat in the corner, talking about fatherhood.

And then, the two paragraphs that made me burst out laughting:

Brooks was confused, frustrated and felt his play had regressed. And so I guess he did what basketball players do at Oregon when they’re fed up with things and considering a defection.

He called me.

And no, I’m not going to provide a link.

by Corvid on May 12, 2009 11:37 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Awesome

Three years ago, Canzano probably told him “you know, not everyone can be as good as Adam Morrison. But don’t worry, you can become almost as good as Bassy Telfair”.

dang, i half-hoped you were joking

Maybe I should call him.

I don't want to mess up Timbo's post

But does anyone else not care at all about the draft this year?

It seems like it’s a pick up game and we’re all discussing who we are going to pick last.

by tominhawaii on May 12, 2009 1:36 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I'm paying much less attention this year.

I mean, don’t get me wrong, I appreciate the knowledge from everyone here who knows the draft.

But honestly, we’re going to make a few trades on draft night, get one or two young guys, and hopefully a vet or two. I can research the young guys after the draft… it’s so hard to say where we’ll pick, and whether we’ll keep our second rounders, that I may as well keep that space in the head for other memorization needs. (“May I be excused? My brain is full”)

Knowing every single player who may get chosen in positions 5-60 won’t help KP make the call… so I’ll enjoy the draft with basic knowledge of the players, and learn about the new Blazers afterward. Unlike when we have a top 5 pick, I don’t feel like I need to be rooting for a player, or a trade.

…and by that, I mean that ME knowing all those players inside and out won’t help KP. It’s highly useful for him to know all those players. :)

by Timmay! on May 12, 2009 1:52 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's what I meant

You said it way better. I like one player in the draft that is in our range and after that I don’t really expect much to happen. I think KP will go get the guy he wants that he can get. I don’t see the point in hitching my wagon to a guy or reading the profiles of pretty much anyone.

by tominhawaii on May 12, 2009 1:54 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Much like you, I wouldn't say any of this in an actual draft thread

People really enjoy the draft research and debate, even on years like this where Portland’s role will likely be very different than the last three. So more power to those folks, they’re talking about what they enjoy. But for me… I just can’t get excited about it. I know the top 10 ranked players, plus a few that might be nice in Portland (mainly as prospects), and that’s good enough for me to enjoy the draft this year.

It’s entirely possible that we could draft 4 Euro’s in the second round. I won’t feel bad if I don’t know their names and histories until after we pick them.

And of course I won’t talk about this in today’s JD either. Some doofus put a topless picture into the post.

I wanted to see if I could get the most flags on a junk drawer

I agree about the draft stuff too. KP can trade the picks for futures or trade to move up a little. It’s too much researching other folks who have a high percentage of not being on the team. Same reason I don’t care about trade talk. It’s too much stuff about guys that aren’t Blazers.

by tominhawaii on May 12, 2009 2:32 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

but...

for a lot of people it brings hope. sure its not vital now that we are poised to start winning, but that glimmer of hope is all a lot of people have. I know thats why i get excited for draft time.
not so much this year.. but i do live in LA and trust me.. no one gets more stoked for draft day than Raider fans.. its just the PRAYER that someday, somehow, someway, you might be relevant again.

Oh I totally agree… when you’re not doing well, the draft is the great hope. For years, we hung off every possibility of what could happen in the draft. Especially with KP doing the work.

I think it’s a big sign of the Blazers’ progress that I’m less concerned about the draft. We did well enough to be in the bottom 1/4 of the draft. That’s wonderful. :)

I think my lesser interest in the draft (and to keep perspective, I mean my interest in the pre-draft research portion; I’ll be watching the draft intently as it happens) is a side effect of success. If we continue to improve, I think we’ll see the draft take less and less importance among fans for a few years. KP should consider that a great thing.

indeed..

i cant wait to have a simple 20 second debate on which player we should grab at #32.

Hilarious. If you don’t want to make the jump, here is future Blazer Kirk McBreakfast

Kirk Hinrich – Bacon, Egg & Cheese Biscuit. A lot of really solid, good things in this one that blend nicely into a yummy option. Not one ingredient really stands out from the others, but all the basics are covered and overall it’s just a very comfortable choice that’s hard to go wrong with. Too bad breakfast may not be in the plans.
