So who is still watching the playoffs? (with poll)

I'm a little curious as to how many of you have packed it in for the season when the Blazers went down in Game 6 at Houston... Are you still hanging in there with a secondary rooting interest? Or just casually watching? Or do you care at all now that the proverbial happy ending has been postponed?

(Yes, that was a set-up for TiH.)

I've been pretty deeply involved in the doings of The Team That Shall Not Be Named, of course. And I know that Norskie's number two pony (Dallas) is still in the race for a little while anyhow... Who is backing whom? And how do you think this thing plays out?

Now, for your entertainment, here's how things are gonna turn out. Clip and save for future reference...

Four series remaining...

EAST 1

Celtics 2 to Magic 2

Both teams have won one on the road. Boston has the home court advantage in the best-of-3 remaining, but they look highly beatable to me. They shouldn't have taken Chicago, truth be told... ORLANDO IN 6.

EAST 2

Cavs 3 to Hawks 0

This one is over. CLEVELAND. Probably in a sweep...

EASTERN CONFERENCE CHAMPION = CLEVELAND.

The home floor is too formidable and they really do have a nice team. And that big linebacker guy, too.

WEST 1

Lakers 2 to Rockets 2

With no Yao and Lakers at home 2 out of the remaining 3, it's pretty hard to see a positive outcome for the Rockets. The Lakers have not impressed in this post-season though. LAKERS IN 7.

WEST 2

Nuggets 3 to Mavs 0

The clock has struck 12 and Dallas has turned back into a pumpkin. Nuggets are the hottest team in the West at the moment. NUGGETS IN 5.

WESTERN CONFERENCE CHAMPION = DENVER.

WORLD CHAMPS = CAVS.

Let's hear your take on the playoffs below...

BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE — A POLL!

Poll

LeBron has become really annoying to me lately

All the choreographed stuff they do before games and his whining when he doesn’t get superstar calls bugs me.

i actually don't mind it

he is entertaining. he knows he’s paid to be an entertainer, so he does it.

I'm the only thing I'm afraid of.

IF he starts whining like Duncan

he’ll become my #2 most annoying player.

What are you impressions of Roy?

Personally I don't think it is about "Boring"... it is about the Blazers "Competition"

Watching the NBA helps us evaluate what our players do versus what guys on other teams can and do. Looking at box scores and comparing guys solely on the stat sheet is one thing… but it is entirely different to watch players and get a feel for their roles, minutes, efforts and impact. Afterall, IMPACT on a game is way different from just having good stats. Those Shane Battier’s, Joakim Noah’s, and Greg Oden’s who don’t have uber-impressive stat lines but have big impacts on the minutes they play in are important for Bloggers-Like-Us to be familiar with…

Afterall, pretty much all we do at this juncture of the off-season is debate and evaluate current Blazers and potential roster additions. Without watching these guys during the season and specifically in the playoffs it is impossible to be knowledgeable to partake in the ever-popular off-season roster discussions.

Whether or not you find them boring or don’t particularly like the teams playing, watching these teams lets us know about the players we have chances to get… Boston’s Glen Davis, Orlando’s Hedo Turkoglu, Hawk’s Mike Bibby, Rockets Ron Artest, Maverick Brandon Bass, Denver’s Birdman Andersen are all players who have been recently debated as being an off-season addition to our Blazers. Watch these guys play so that you can chime in with your opinion on what you see from these players.

Oh, and watching LeBron James is pretty freaking amazing. That kid has got it. LBJ is gonna be a mountain for this franchise to climb… but the good news is that it is up to the BLAZERS to keep Air Jordan alone as the best player ever by handing LBJ some finals losses and keeping him from winning every Championship series he plays in…. which Michael Jordan never lost a series when it was RING time.

by Portland Dynasty on May 11, 2009 11:36 AM PDT up reply actions

I've seen plenty of the teams still in the playoffs.

I know about all of those guys.

I just find these particular series pretty boring. I usually have them on the tv if I’m around but I don’t take time out of what I’m doing to watch them, except for the LA and Houston series.

I LOVED the Chicago and Boston series. But Orlando and Boston are making a pretty boring series.

I have been an Aaron Brooks fan for several years and this afternoon he set a career high scoring 34 points!!!

I am amazed that the Yao-less Rockets could win against the L*kers, but then I guess that is why they play the games.

I've actually been

Finding myself watching the NHL playoffs over the NBA playoffs when they’ve been on against each other (which is often.) I still pay attention, and read a bunch of the ESPN.com stories, but this year just feels too inevitable, and this round just doesn’t seem good enough in the NBA to watch night in and night out.

by usdblazerfan on May 10, 2009 11:32 PM PDT reply actions

NHL playoffs are great

I have a Canadian friend from Vancouver that I’ve been watching a lot of the games with. Hockey is easily becoming my second favorite sport to watch. If you’re gonna watch one series the Capitals-Penguins series has been pretty solid IMO

What are you impressions of Roy?

Anyone who doesn't watch hockey normally, needs to see Penguins-Capitals.

Alex Ovechkin, Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin are the three best offensive players in the NHL. Ovechkin’s the best player in the world period. He’s basically the LeBron of the NHL and some of the plays he makes are just as spectacular as what James does.

And don’t forget the sheer terror of overtime playoff hockey. Overtime in the NHL playoffs is what separates the NHL playoffs from almost every other league’s postseason. It’s great for neutral fans looking for an entertaining game. If you’re rooting for either team involved with any sort of enthusiasm, it borders on torture. But torture that you ask for more of……….cause it’s fun.

I'm only watching the Lakers/Rockets

Although I am halfway paying attention to the Magic/Celtics

I’m rooting for the Rockets foremost, with a little bit of rooting for the Magic, though I doubt either team will make it for obvious reasons. This year is clearly the Cav’s to win or lose as they choose. And they look like they are choosing to win.

I’m a HUGE fan of Battier. I love the guy. Artest is slightly behind him, and I like Brooks too. And the Houston bench can just play amazingly, can’t they? Talk about taking up the mantle, having both your centers knocked out of the playoffs and putting in the 6’6" Hayes at center and winning against the lakers? That’s…well…sigh that’s amazing.

That is 35 million sitting on the bench. Their entire team is payed 70 million total. Half of their team is gone! And they beat the lakers.

Playoffs have been mediocre

I have watched most of the games, but have been pretty lackluster about them, outside of the first round. Houston has been fun, Denver and Dallas has been lame, Dallas is really a joke. Denver is a serious contender and their fans should be proud, we need a Billups. Have watched like 5 minutes of all Cavs games, I like LeBron, but don’t really like watching one sided games. Boston Orlando, has been okay, but mostly because I hate Boston and don’t really love or hate the Magic outside of SVG, who is hilarious. With that said only serious worth a damn has been Houston and L*kers. Brooks has been rad, he is so quick, and honestly the Blazers had a tougher first round opponent than many gave credit to.

To be honest I miss San Antonio, I miss the Suns, I miss the good old days of the Bad Boys and the Knicks and the Spurs with D Rob, I don’t I miss the hard fouls and impossible moments with Jordan, even though he made me cry and despise his existence on multiple occasions.

Oh yes and you have to give Big Baby and Rondo credit, hate the C’s but really like both those guys, the rest of the team can go straight to hell, boy!

Watching somewhat, rooting for the Rockets

partially because it makes the Blazers look by association, but also because I suddenly like this Rockets team now that we’re not playing them. Instead of “I can’t believe we’re getting killed by Chris Rock” it’s “YEAH go get ’em Chris Rock! Oregon represent!” and of course Battier is great, Ron-Ron has a strange crazy person charm, Scola seems less evil and dirty due to the presence of his evil twin Sasha.

Timbo-

You picked the Nuggets over the L*kers in the WCF?

I know the L@kers aren’t exactly wowing anyone by letting the Yao/McGrady less Rockets manhandle them, but the Nuggets haven’t exactly had a murderer’s row of playoff opponents.

The Nuggets are playing well, but they were in a bracket with the 3 worst playoff teams (I think the Jazz would have had a great shot beating anyone but the L#kers): The old and injury plagued Spurs, the exhausted/injured Hornets and the Mavs who are down 0-3. The Spurs lucked into the 3rd seed (12-7 in games decided by 3 or less plus that OT win against the hornets in the finale). The top 4 in the West going into the playoffs definitely were the L$kers, Nuggets, Rockets and Blazers and it’s really too bad that we had to play Houston and then they had to play LA in the next round. I think all those teams beat any of the other 4 teams in a series and if either the Rockets or Blazers ended up in Denver’s place, I think they would have made the conference finals too.

I swear I’m not bitter about getting the 4th seed.

I've always been more of a Blazers fan than a basketball fan.

Haven’t watched a game since the Blazers got eliminated. Still follow the scores to see who won, but never actually bothering to watch. Would like the Rockets to win, but other than that, can’t really generate those feelings to care.

More interested in what happens with the draft, free agency, trades and off-season improvement for the Blazers than what the rest of the NBA is doing.

Of all the things that can be expressed in the printed word – love, hate, fear, joy – true humor is the one that is the most difficult of all. Sarcasm, for example, is an art of delicate subtlety. Yet too many people wield it as a bulldozer – loud, smelly, ugly, and destructive – and think they are being funny.

Last nights Rockets/Lakers game was amazing

though I think it might be a one time boost from losing Yao, sounds strange, but it happens.
The Orlando Boston series is pretty good, I just want to see boston lose, I think Orlando is not smart about playing match ups. Every point in the first quarter was in the paint, practically, then they end the game shooting 3’s. Orlando could have won that. Denver Dallas is just sad.
I used to live in Denver, and I grew up in Colorado, so I follow them and they look really good. Billups was the trade of the year. No one ever again would be able to trade A.I. for anyone, especially a Billups quality guy. I am really looking forward to a lakers denver WCF, just because it should be a very entertaining game.
Cleveland against whoever is so boing, clevland is just too good, its boring to watch. I’m not even sure why, but I hope they don’t win a championship. Though it would be nice for Cleveland to win one before LeBron leaves.
By the way Timbo, my wife and I have decided that if Houston beats the Lakers there is a good chance Kobe will come to the Blazers. Kind of a joke, but if they did somehow lose what do you think it would do to the team?

I’m watching as many games as I can, this is finals time for me so I’m watching way more than I should. Some observations:

—Haven’t seen a team get intimidated off the court like the Hawks in a long time. I would be embarrassed to be one of their fans. Although if I was asked to guard Lebron, I would probably fake a couple injuries.

—It’s so disappointing to see Yao get benched for the season because he tried to play through an injury. I hope T-Mac is humiliated sitting next to him. Yao’s injury also put an end to what I thought was the most impressive ball I’ve ever seen from him.

—What’s with Kobe doing post-game interviews with headphones around his neck? If his skin broke out he’d look like half the tools from my high school.

—I agree with Timbo. Denver looks tough. Although there’s no one on the roster I like to guard Kobe, I still think they could steal a series from LA. Also, Cuban is trying to give David Stern a heart attack, what with calling K-Mart’s mom a punk and shoving a cameraman.

—Boston is done. That team has a fork sticking out of it. That said, this has been the most impressive run I’ve ever seen out of a zombie team. All Boston hatred aside, there has to be some love for a team with no hope fighting as hard as they are.

Boston.

Their decline kind of surprised me. After last year, I thought they might come undone, but maybe because of chemistry…too many egos, meddling by Ainge…none of that seems to have happened. KG’s injury is too easy to point to as the cause, of course, as they revealed shades of increasing mortality this year. KG’s leadership, or motivation, while playing is probably more critical than his physical presence. I wonder what this team will look like next year, particularly if they flame out in this round.

KG's oncourt presence is being underrated.

Boston won last year with defense and rebounding. KG is the focal point for the defense and the team is an elite rebounding team with him and a middling rebounding team without him. It’s not just about his leadership or whatever. KG’s never been an elite scorer, but he’s elite in every single other aspect of the game.

Did not Boston do the oppisate of what we decided to do?

We took the long term approach. Get good young guys and build. I think when Boston lost out on a top pick the year before last they did the ultimate get good quick plan. Get top veterans, trade promising young talent. They got lucky Rondo is so good. It worked , they won a championship. Now we see the downside, one guy gets hurt, and they are done,at least as far as being a top contender. Also the guys are older so there is more chance that one will be injured, perhaps seriously, and end their run. So what do they do? How long until they can rebuild? I mean, could they have actually peaked? If so, how long do Boston fans enjoy having a great team that can’t quite get back to the top? Total instant gratification. This has all been said before, but it’s interesting to see how fragile it all is for them.

Previous years I would never miss highlights on game night and would catch any close fourth quarter at least from the conference finals forward. This year I’m paying attention and am interested, but there has been an extended cool down period this last week due to the Blazers actually being in the playoffs and the energy that went into that (combined with a trip to southern california)..

tomorrow (… tonight?) I will be at Staples rooting for no one to win! Hopefully I’ll see at least one ejection..

I don't watch much of the east crap.

Don’t like Boston (although better without KG), the superman stuff in the slam dunk contests have really turned me against D. Howard (I still believe he is overrated), and I get oh so tired of Lebron, Lebron, Lebron. I’d root for any team over the Cavs but of course they are a shoo in to win the east which is the main reason not to watch any of the games there.

The west. Oh Timbo, don’t sell out now, there is no way the Lakers will allow the Nuggets to get by them. They are much too deep and motivated.

Lakers vs. Cav’s? Hard to call. Lakers beat them twice in the regular season. But maybe I’m just letting my dislike for Lebron get in the way. In the Chicago era, I became so sick of the over-hyping by the media regarding Jordan and I find the same thing happening with King James. I won’t watch another Cavs game until the finals or the maybe the Eastern Conference finals if by some miracle Boston or Orlando is threatening to beat them.

Sure, Houston won one game without him, but Lakers should be making adjustments now AND Houston has to take another one in L.A.

Yup you can.

It’s called over-saturation. Can you imagine hearing this stuff about him for the next 10 years? Too much. That’s why I was hoping it would be a couple years still before his team started winning big.

Brandon Roy just destroyed everything in his path. There's your rational analysis -- Dave

I'm watching with interest for a couple of reasons.

I’m enjoying the series for the most part. The east has been boring except for the Celtic’s inability to win a series outright, but LeBron is worth watching anyway.

I’m looking forward to a LA vs. Denver Clash of the Creetons! One can only guess how many technicals are going to be called in that one. I think the biggest thing to come out of that series isn’t going to be a WCF champion, but rather an economic boom for the NBA’s offices due to the fines from that series alone. I’m waiting for K-Mart to do a Tyson and take a chunk out of someone’s ear.

The main thing I’m watching for is the potential competitors during the 09/10 playoffs. So far, I’m not liking what I’m seeing. We got pushed out by the physical play of the Rockets and the inexperience of most of the guys who haven’t been in a playoff series. If we have to face a team with the defensive mindset of Denver who loves to intimidate and bully I think we’re going to have a hard time competing unless our style of play is significantly different by the post-season next year.

A newt?
...I got better."
