A random thought about Yao Ming and G.O.

Im sure everyone has heard, Yao is out for the playoffs with a broken foot. Man i feel bad for the Rockets. Just a few days ago they had a 1-1 tie heading back to houston, now they are down 2-1, gave home court right back to the l*kers, and lost Yao and possably the series. Losing Yao would not be such a big deal if T-mac was still healthy but with him out they simply have no one to run there offense through consistently. It just sucks for them and i feel very bad, i wanted to see them beat the stupid l*kers so badly (im sure all rocket fans did/do too) but now its not looking so good. Dont get me wrong they still have a chance but not a good chance.

Moving on to my thought on Yao and G.O. If this had been us......we would have fans chanting the name i dare not speak. Rhymes with Phooey, DUI, screwey, and Lewey. Yao has pretty much been saddled with injuries his whole career, look at the numbers. http://www.nba.com/playerfile/yao_ming/career_stats.html. His first three years he played 82-82 and 80 games respectively. Then the following three years 57-48 and 55 respectively. Now the toughest thing for me to swallow if i was a rocket fan would be that the three injury plagued years were his best production years when he was actually on the court. This year he did play 77 games which is very good but again is now down for the playoffs.

I guess my point in this whole thing is to illustrate that we do not have it as bad with G.O. He is a very young, talented, legit center. He is having his issues and i myself have probly been to impatient and critical but to my mind it seems that Oden will only get better and hopefully put the injury thing behind him. Unfortunatly for Yao he will probly never stop getting hurt for two huge reasons. The first huge reason is himself, he is huge and he plays a game that is very impactful to joints, bones, muscles, etc. when your 7'6" 340lbs that impact goes up exponetially. The second Huge reason is China, he in essence is owned by the chinese government which is truely sad. When the year is over if china has some basketball thing.....the olymics, etc. Yao literally gets forced to play in these events. I cant remeber if it was the last olympics or the last world basketball tourny but the rockets wanted to rest him fo the summer due to the fact he was coming off injury if i remember right and the Chinese over ruled them and he played.

Greg will never have to deal with either of those issues, he wants rest during the summer? Go for it big guy. He does need to cut down on some bulk IMO but not much 15 maybe 20 lbs max. He is certainly not weighing 340lbs. G.O. will become a stud in the middle for us, just have faith and patience as difficult as it maybe for alot of us, myself included.

Anyways, like i said......this was a somewhat random thought i had thanks for hearing it.

the difference is

yao is following hakeem who won 2 nba titles, also yao is internationally known and when healthy has produced.oden unfortunately is following 2 centers who was injury prone.and another who was thrown a towel in his face on national tv.also the way the blazer fans treat oden.is the reason why he’s being called bowie 3.0.until proven otherwise oden has to start manning*up beginning next season period.

If GO is "Bowie 3.0"...

then who was Bowie 2.0? Sabonis? That wouldn’t make sense—unless you think Mark Price (the guy taken after Sabas, and who was an All-Star after all) is comparable to Jordan or Durant.

(Would the Blazers have won a ring with Price at the point rather than Porter? Interesting question…)

uh? larue martin was our first oops...so shouldn't bowie be like larue 3.0?

Larue just wasn't very good

Walton and Bowie were both good players who’s careers were ruined by injury, although it’s a slap to Bill Walton’s face to mention him and Bowie in the same sentence given how much better a player he was.

Another random thought on GO and Yao.

I was listening to Cowherd on Monday. Ric Bucher was his guest in the 4th hour. They were talking about Yao and the L*kers defense. Bucher went on a tangent for a moment.
He said that G.O. gives Yao more trouble on defense than anyone in the league “including Dwight Howard.” He didn’t say anything more. I can only think that he was talking about G.O. fronting Yao. Maybe he was alluding to something else, but they didn’t go down that road. I’d like someone to ask Bucher about it. I e-mailed wheels. No response. Maybe Bucher would come on Courtside. Sorry, I’m rambling with this random thought.

Oden

Better off at a very svelte 260-265 lbs, same weight as Dwight Howard. Instead of attempting to out “big” everyone. He should not go up in weight, or I fear for his body not coping well with it. He is better off using a finesse game like we saw at Ohio State with the bevvy of hooks with either hand. His dunks will always be ferocious, perhaps even more so at 260.

Oden has missed as many games in 2 years as Yao in his whole career.

I also think Oden will get better, but I cant ignore that Oden has been injured every year since college.

And Oden, once again, is a rookie, so non-stop fast break basketball is like fast-forwarding a song while he's trying to learn the lyrics.

Talk about sample size

Look at the NBA. How may centers have not been injured in some way for 3 consecutive years? Granted, Greg’s injuries his rookie year were particularly catastrophic, but his injuries in college and this year were not. Considering that he plays a physical position in an aggressively-physical manner, this cannot be that much of a surprise.

But they become catastrophic when your in playoffs, like Yao.

Yeah besides his rookie year injury, others are not that bad, but it takes allot more time to get in shape for big men, so these smaller injuries prevented Oden from getting in game shape to be ready for playoffs.

Oden's longevity

Statistically longevity in the NBA is better for big men than for smaller guards and forwards who rely on their athleticism (a player like AI is the exception). It increases up to 6’10’’ – 6’11’’, then slightly drops for 7 footers, and drastically drops for players far above that (although the sample size of course is smaller). Also quite a number of players coming out of college and some still in the NBA probably list inaccurate heights (Hayes made himself smaller, as did some of the old timers like Jabaar and Russell. Ben Gordon makes himself bigger than he is).

Greg would fall in the group of the 7 footers (slightly below according to some reports, if you don’t measure him in shoes). Of course the elephant in the room are his legs and his microfractured knees. Recovery from that procedure is vastly different depending on size, weight bearing and rehab procedure and rest afterwards. But it has matured from the early beginning (Stockton, etc.) and could actually add years to the end of his career by creating more cartilage. Jason Kidd still plays. Amare seems fully recovered. Even Kenyon Martin looks much fresher in this season than he did a few years ago.

I would like for Greg to not gain further weight, rather convert some pounds into lean muscle or outright drop it. Then, who knows, he could have a normal ten year plus career with the occasional injuries almost all big men experience them.

For some reason the screen name "Bowie the Banger" just popped into my head.

Some lurker should so steal that and start using it regularly.

I'm the only thing I'm afraid of.

Big Z... he seems to have finally kicked the "injury prone" bug.

It is just tough for the big guys to stay healthy.

by 50backflips on May 11, 2009 9:29 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I doubt Yao didn’t want to play for China for the Olympics in Bejing. That’s worded confusingly. I don’t think anything would have kept Yao off the court in Bejing. China doesn’t “own” him.

by 50backflips on May 11, 2009 9:29 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I respecfully disagree

Houston allmost didnt draft Yao #1 overall ONLY because of the chinese government. Houston was unsure if China would let him play or if they would pull something similar to what lithuania to us us with Sabonis. Plus i cant remember speciffially when Houston wanted to rest Yao for the summer and china over-ruled Houston but that did happen. If your Living in a communist state, and your international icon trust me your woned by your government, dont believe me? Ask Sabonis.
