Questions of my own

So I just have a few questions regarding some important dates and international players.

1) By what date do we need to decide if we sign Frye, Blake, and Outlaw to extensions? If we don't how much cap space does that give us?

2) Can we bring Pettri and Freeland over this year or do we have to buy out their contracts? Is there any other internationals we own the draft rights to?

3) When can we start talking to Free Agents (date)

3) last year teams could start negotiating July 1, and sign July 8 or 9th I believe.

2) I don’t know, but I’m not sure it matter. I don’t think either guy would make it onto the roster.

1) from everything I’ve read, both Blake and Outlaw have guaranteed contracts for next year. Frye has a $4.2m qualifying option, which I’m sure the Blazers will decline. Other than that, the Blazers are on the hook for $50.5 million right now, none of it optional. They also only have 11 players under contract. The cap should be around $58 million.

You also need to add cap holds for Koponen, Freeland and their 2009 1st round pick. That’s a little over $2.5 million in cap holds unless any or all are renounced (which I don’t see happening).

Freeland

Could freeland take Fryes place? according to draftexpress he is like the 7th best international player

Anyone think Channing's option might be useful in a sign-&-trade scenario?

That contract together with TO’s and change might fetch someone interesting.

I have also wondered if the (small) stockpile of players in Europe might help restock the roster after a many-for-one trade this off-season. Anyone else seeing that?

by bamkapow on May 1, 2009 11:02 AM PDT reply actions

probably not

I don’t think anyone would want Channing for that kind of money.

More importantly, we can use our cap space (~$8m) in a salary dump move. In other words, if there is a player that makes under $8 million, they can just give him to us if they’re trying to cut costs. I am not sure if that can be paired with, say, Outlaw to get the maximum returning salary up to $12m, which would let us theoretically trade for Gerald Wallace.

I've heard Kopenen has not progressed very well

Frankly, I can’t really remember who all else we have options for

Resign Frye

As the Voice of the Portland TrailBlazers, I would love to here Antonio, Wheeler, and Frye do the play by play for a game

Answers:

1) The contracts for Travis and Blake in 2009-10 are not guaranteed if they are waived before June 30th. If they are on an NBA roster on July 1st, their 2009-10 salary is fully guaranteed. So if the Blazers want the cap savings, they must cut one or both before June 30th.

Channing Frye is not eligible for an extension. He will be a free agent on July 1st. However, if Portland makes a qualifying offer before June 30th, Frye will be a restricted free agent. If they do not make a qualifying offer, Frye will be an unrestricted free agent. Keep in mind that making a qualifying offer would put a huge cap hold on the Blazers’ team salary of nearly $9.5 million. For this reason, I don’t expect a qualifying offer to be made.

Nobody knows exactly how much cap room the Blazers will have, since the cap figure will not be set until the end of the July Moratorium (July 7th with FA signings beginning on July 8th). But my best guess? If they keep both Outlaw and Blake, a little more than $7 million. If they cut Outlaw, add $3.6 million to that figure. If they cut Blake, add $4.0 million to that figure.

2) Portland can sign either Koponen or Freeland – or both – to their rookie scale contracts this summer or can continue to allow them to play in Europe.

I don’t know how much of a buyout it would take to allow their current teams to release them so that they could play in the NBA.

According to RealGM, Portland also continues to hold the rights to Nedzad Sinanovic, Doron Sheffer, Federico Kammerichs and Marcelo Nicola.

3) Negotiations with free agents can begin on July 1st.

Freeland’s contract ends this summer. Koponen has a buyout, but not gigantic. I expect both in summer league, but only Freeland to get an offer.

Congrats to Houston. Beat LA!
Going forward Blazers have 5 draft picks, and Rockets have none :)

interesting summer league roster

Bayless and Koponen again.

Oden maybe? Batum again perhaps?

Freeland too.

There’s your starting five? – Elgin

is it possible for Batum to play with the French team

and also in summer league this year? – Elgin

Theoretically yes. France needs to qualify in August, and the European championships are mid September

I read that they don't plan on him being in SL

but since I can’t remember where, take that with a grain of salt.

Add our draft pick(s) and a few tryouts, and that's an interesting team to watch for Dave and Ben in Vegas

Very interesting indeed

I always look forward to Summer League and try to make it to as many games as possible (its a bit easier for me since I live in Las Vegas), but having some great players on the Blazer teams during the last couple of years has made it even better. I even heard an interview with Martell a couple of weeks ago in which he intimated that he might play.

Thanks for the info. on Freeland’s status.

by Storyteller on May 1, 2009 1:08 PM PDT up reply actions

It's basically now or never with him, since he will get good offers from some Euro clubs to lock him in for a few years

If they don’t bring him over this year, they won’t see him for a while. Although then they could offer him more money than the rookie scale, a slight loophole recently discussed with Tiago Splitter and the Spurs.

Congrats to Houston. Beat LA!

Just heard that summer league in Utah is cancelled. Instead only Vegas and Orlando. More competition.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
