Ouch-- Dwight Jaynes with some harsh words
Dwight discusses how scouts feel Portland is easy to prepare for. It almost looks like this post is written by Blazin'. Very interesting.

Dwight's trying to hedge his bet after the fact.
He’s the idiot that was calling for Houston with 2 weeks to go, saying we match up so well with them and could adjust to win. This after Houston had shown us at the very beginning of the year, right in the middle of the year, and at the very end of the year that we clearly don’t match up well with them.
SHUT YOUR FACE AND EAT CROW, DJ!!! ADMIT YOU WERE WAY WRONG AND TOTALLY BLEW IT, YOU OLD FART!!!

but the two posts linked above are spot on.

Jaynes said nothing of interest or new
Playoffs are different. Every team already knows what each team is going to do. There are no surprises or hidden tactics. The playoffs are inherently geared toward isolation play due to a slower pace and better defenses. The breakdowns in defense occur less often and the transition points don’t come as easy. Jaynes points the finger at Roy when the finger should be pointed at the roster.
Besides Roy, the Blazers roster consists of spot up jumpshooters. In the case of Outlaw, a fadeaway jumpshooter. The PGs on the team are incapable of drawing the defense and make plays. The only low-post option is LMA who doesn’t draw fouls. The Rockets played mostly straight up defense on him. They knew LMA couldn’t beat them with long 2-pointers. With a giant 7’6’’ in the paint, the Rockets forced the Blazers to shoot over the top because the PG, SF, and C positions weren’t a threat to score individually.
The Blazers big strengths in the regular season were negated by the Rockets defense. With Yao playing in the middle, the Blazers centers were not able to grab offensive rebounds. The Rockets also had great individual defense that minimized help defense on the wings. Blazers did not get good looks from the 3-point line. The Rockets closed well on our jumpshooters and forced them to dribble or take a contested jumpshot.
Overall, it was the combination of the Rocket’s defense and the Blazers roster that spelled doom for the offense. It has nothing to do with the Roy trusting his teammates.

Exactly right. Add to that the fact that we saw Roy
consistently dish to teammates (Blake especially, whichis not Aldridge Jaynes). He shared the ball to a fault during the regular season.
But, because the rest of the team couldn’t hit a perimeter shot with a hand in the face, Roy’s offense was the only viable option. Pretty simple really, I’m not sure how DJ missed that.
I’m not going to repeat everything you said, but one thing that deserves emphasis, is Houston’s D. We wouldn’t have the same problem with 28 other teams in this league, and the other would be Boston with KG.

disagree with Dwight's assessment
I think this “Roy doesn’t trust his teammates” crap is flat out wrong. How many times did he dish it to a teammate last night, only for that person to miss an open jumper? At some point he has to lose faith in his teammates (with the exception of Aldridge) for the game because of how many shots they were missing.
by cloudydays on May 1, 2009 9:53 AM PDT reply actions 1 recs
yep.
When no one hits their shots and Roy’s assists don’t accumulate, suddenly he doesn’t trust his teammates.
Even if it were the case, could you really blame him after his teammates miss shot after shot after shot?

Jaynes was saying before the playoffs
that Houston wouldn’t be that bad, and while it turns that that the Rockets beat the Blazers, I think he was right. The Blazers, (eventhough we all had dreams) were not going to go deep in the playoffs, so a good hard series against a team like Houston exposed alot of flaws the Blazers need to address. Houston showed that the Blazers do run too many iso’s, for Roy, Outlaw, LMA, etc… even though they were very successful with that type of offense in the season, in the playoffs it was exposed a little bit. I think Nate needs to add some more offensive sets, and not just some ball screens for Roy to get him free. But some true movement on offense that creates easy shots.
Nate also needs to address the defense, the Blazers play ok defense, but they need create more turnovers, and play tighter team defense. Some of that will come with these players playing together for a few more years, but new scheme’s need to be added to the defensive end to make this team more consistant during the season, and more of a threat during the playoffs.
I also agree with Jaynes about Greg, he is THE important issue this offseason, more so than upgrading the PG or SF spots, Greg needs to get at least 2 bankable post moves besides the dunk for next season. If this team can get 15ppg from Greg it will become a title contender.
My perfect line up for next year is:
Captain Kirk
Roy
Batum
LMA
Oden
This gives the Blazers all the scoring and defense they can need on the starting unit, it also gives them a playoff unit that can force other teams to adjust to them, unlike this year where the Blazers were constantly trying to adjust to their opponent. Not sure what it would take to get Kirk from the Bulls, if we don’t have enough or they continue to ask for too much, A. Miller is a UFA from Philly who could fill the same role, (he is just older, so Kirk should be the first option).
For the bench I see:
Rudy – main scorer
Bayless – Secondary scorer
Joel – Defensive backbone
Webster – 3 point specialist
A new back up 4 will also be needed as Frye will move on this year, but those are the main players. If Bayless can improve enough to run the offense while being a slasher/scorer he will make Sergio expendable.
While I love the playoffs, I know this team wasn’t going to do much accept maybe win a series and hopefull give a scare to the Lakers, now the real fun starts for me, and for KP. The offseason is here my friends, let the speculation begin!

It was exposed by Houston in the regular season as well.
The playoffs, in this respect, showed us nothing.
Not sure our D was exposed either. That’s never stopped being a concern.
Kirk doesn’t add more offense than Blake. He adds more D, which should be enough. He can get inside if he has a straight line, but so can Blake. I’d take Kirk in a heart beat and love his attitude, but he’s not night and day different than Blake.
Batum needs to add some offense to his game in a serious way. If he doesn’t, there’s no way he starts over Webster. I think it’s just been a while since we saw him, so people forget what he adds. Webster is by far a superior team defender as well. He’s much less than Batum when on the ball, but he’s not mysteriously out of position and confused with tougher concepts. Batum will learn that to be sure, but it’ll take a while. I very much doubt Batum starts next year if Webster’s hear and healthy, unless Outlaw gets traded and we need his scoring off the bench. In that case, Batum will play the quasi-starter role again.

I think he's off base with a lot of those comments....
BUT I do agree that the Portland style of play needs to be looked at just a bit. However, part of me thinks that playing the way that would be most effective for this team, might just not have been possible with so many rookies on the squad. All of these things that hurt Portland during the playoffs are fixable. This offseason will be possibly the biggest test of Nate, KP and the entire Blazers front office.
Yes! Yes! In the face!

Dwight is mod'ing the comments
I left him one asking him to eat some crow pie with dignity. It was a decent, polite message… not nasty in any way. He didn’t post it.
I have nothing nice to say about that without personally attacking him, so I’ll stop right here.

KP2 answered my question in a chat
Jacob (CA): Kevin, what’s your diagnosis for Portland’s awful offensive showing in these playoffs? Too much 1v1 play? Relying on offensive rebounding too much? Just a great job by Houston? Where does Portland go from here?
Kevin Pelton (Basketball): The thing is, the Blazers’ offense should in theory be much easier to translate into the playoffs than teams that rely on transition offense or something like that. That was the premise of a piece I wrote for Sports Northwest Magazine earlier this year. Dependence on outside shooting did make them somewhat vulnerable, but end games in the playoffs are all about 1-on-1 play (as one person remarked during Boston-Chicago Game 5, "We play a team game for six months. Then it’s all about the individuals in the playoffs."), so … . I think a lot of the credit has to go to the Rockets, who made the Blazers really like discombobulated at times in the series.
by jksnake99 on May 1, 2009 10:48 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Playoffs are more isolation oriented
Blazers don’t have enough capable individual scorers or passers to make a dent in Houston’s defense. Pelton is right on the money.

I stopped reading
after the first paragraph when he questioned their effort.
I will NEVER question this team’s effort with this roster. It is full of hard workers that have never just laid down and accepted a loss. They came back from double digit deficits this season for their effort to be brought into question.
by Roybot on May 1, 2009 11:21 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
wow that last sentence didn't make sense.
It should be “They came back from too many double digit deficits and won that their effort should never be brought into question.”

Jaynes seems to want to be that tough, wise, I've got the truth writer
which is not an uncommon approach in the business. I will give him credit that he put out a disclaimer as not seeing himself as a fan page writer and thus dispensed of the “it was a great ride” format.
Whether or not he is hypocritical I won’t judge but I don’t like his approach most of the time. As far as what he says I think there are some basic truths in there and others have said them before.
Yes, GO had a very up and down season and will need to become better if he is to help the team get better and be a featured player (and yes he could probably use a big man mentor). I think he did show flashes of how he could be a very good center even in this series.
Yes, BRoy is a great offensive player but he and the team need to develop a more team oriented approach to offense in order to be a better team. Of course all good teams need to have a player or two as the featured threat for some plays but it can’t be all the plays.
That’s all I think he said, I think he is right but he comes off as being the authority on what is wrong with the team and that this should be the sole focus right now and I think that approach lame. Jayne’s just takes the easy way of blasting the team after the fact and wants us to believe that he is just following his instincts as an ex newspaper guy.
I appreciate Dave’s approach which is to say we had a good year, let’s appreciate it and let’s analyze it more in depth soon. He said before the series that it would be tough and that some of our short comings were bound to be amplified in the series… I look forward to hear his take on where do we go from here.

DJ you’re past your prime, all you have to do is spend 5 mins listening to Talkin Ball to realize it (you condescending old man). I’d love to hear/read something fresh come from you but this fan site has already exhausted all your tired old analysis.

Then you beat me out by at least 3, This is why Dwight has gone from newspaper to radio and finally ending up on the worst sports show ever and a blog that draws 20 comments a day. He will always attack people he does not agree with or take the anti view whatever it may be just to get a rise. Enough DJ please!

I'm a little mystifyied why anyone would write a negative piece
after the season this team gave us, anyway with the long road ahead looking quite bright I think for now I will just slow down and enjoy the season that was. And really we should have a great summer waiting to see what KP does next.
Thanks guys great year! Go Blazers!

I actually agreed 100% with everything he said.
After the melt down against Houston, I’m surprised so many people think
he nuts. Portland needs to make major personal moves, and make significant changes in the style of play, otherwise we are just going to be a good team, that gets crushed in the playoffs.
