Gameday Open Thread: Strange Bedfellows
Here is an open thread so you can follow and comment on the Nuggets-L*kers game tonight. It's the late game on TNT, starting at 7:30 p.m.
In one of the weirder twists of fate in this seeding battle, Portland fans would benefit from a L*ker win tonight. If Denver loses tonight our hopes for the division crown are still alive. It's one of the only nights in history where you might find us hoping that the purple and gold guys do well.
Never fear, though. The Blazers are next up for L.A. As soon as this game ends it's back to hating with a vengenace...vengeance that will hopefully be taken out in spades tomorrow evening.

I'm rooting for a meteor.
Goodbye Staples center! Erm. Not that I would want anyone to actually get hurt.
Of all the things that can be expressed in the printed word – love, hate, fear, joy – true humor is the one that is the most difficult of all. Sarcasm, for example, is an art of delicate subtlety. Yet too many people wield it as a bulldozer – loud, smelly, ugly, and destructive – and think they are being funny.

I want the 4 spot anyway
We need to avoid Dallas at all costs
The NBA: Where Amazingly Bad Officiating Happens.
I seriously doubt they will beat out Utah and NO
Dallas loses out on both tiebreakers, and would have to make up two games on NO to be the sixth seed. New Orleans will win at least one of their games against Dallas, meaning that they would only have to win one other game.

I think I am a bad fan because I cannot keep up with all the seeding, tie-breaking, winning-out, division winning scenarios....
I made flash cards to keep track, but they are only good for 24 hours.

I ALWAYS hope for the purple & gold guys to do well ('cept when they're playing Portland, who outranks them).

Also, this game doesn't actually matter, because Denver wins the division and LAL has already won the conference.
The things we have to root for:
1) Blazers to win out.
2) SAS to drop at least one more.
3) No Blazers to get hurt.
Pontiff of the Pryz for Prez Posse...
One could make the case that a DENVER win is better -- worst case scenario is Blazers v. Mavericks. If the Blazers finish in the 4, no problems...
Pontiff of the Pryz for Prez Posse...
We have tiebreak with SAS
They could take our seed if they win the division over Houston, but otherwise they have to win one MORE than PDX to pass them, since the Blazers have the tiebreak.
Right. The strategy shifted as soon as Blazers lost to Houston.

It will be New Orleans or Utah.

What about best record?
Denver’s magic # is 1, right? That’s an almost impossible task. But if the L$kers don’t have best record to play for, their studs will sit. If they (La) lose tonight, could the Cavs wrap it up before tomorrow’s game?

I’m pulling for Denver. Maybe if they have clinched second we will get to beat up on their scrubs Wednesday.
Just an FYI
People are worried about getting the third seed, because of a subsequent matchup with Dallas.
This is very, very unlikely. To pass Utah and New Orleans, both teams holding tiebreakers over Dallas, is a small likelihood.
The third seed would be against Utah or New Orleans in all probabliity.

He has mad hops, while Varejao just has mad hair :)
Of course he has flaws, but is much younger, a better scorer and a better shot blocker while being about equal in rebounding. It was pretty reasonable that the Bulls could have created a package for Amare around him. LaMarcus looks to be significantly better so the Blazers got the better end of that deal, but he is not a bad guy and thus not available.
I see your points
But still do not see that Thomas is ever going to have that basketball common sense required to improve his game.
He’s still a pup I know, but its been 3 years…I will surely retract my opnion of his mental capabilities if it eventually shows up. You will be the first I let know I was wrong.
Of course if and when that day ever actually arrives :)
The Oden Era, Day 658
Reportedly Paxson and Skiles were unimpressed that LMA was very timid when they had dinner
Now they have the guy who is “not soft”, but plays worse basketball :)
Don’t get me wrong, I never wanted to give up LaMarcus for Thomas. I probably wouldn’t even really want him on the Blazers. But he won’t be some bust in this league. He is already too skilled for that, and he does work to improve his game in the offseason (e.g. with Thorpe).
For sure we will both enjoy

Too Much Money
Blake is a bargain and you get 85% of what Capt Kirk would bring us.
The Oden Era, Day 658
Hinrich's contract is untenable, I don't think PA wants to pay luxury tax for a small upgrade at the pg spot
Besides, I like what Blake brings on the offensive end for our team and he competes defensively, he just has trouble containing ultra-quick pgs.
by trailblazersfan on Apr 9, 2009 6:09 PM PDT up reply actions
it is not a small upgrade
Hinrich is more creative, a similar shooter, and feeds the post well.
He’s a good defender as well.

Batum is showing that can be managable
More I see of the team, the more it looks like Blake can push his man into trouble for that quick PG that is our long bigs, now working as one unit down low . Thus his weaknesses are not as big. He is indeed growing with this team.

It just doesn’t make sense strategically to spend your money on him and limit yourself from making better moves. Having some cap flexibility might be huge for us this summer.

In other news word is that KP to do a sign and trade with Raef to the Cavs for Lebron as they are a small market team as well, and scientists from PA’s Vulcan group have created a time machine and are going back to 1990 and bring back Terry Porter as our PG.

As also a Mavs fan, I'm fully supporting this asinine story ;)
Dave has put a moratorium on trade talk. But in general I think Cuban has a good point (and if PA is willing to be a buyer, so could we):
“I think we’ve got the No. 1 trading asset available and that’s money,” Cuban said in a recent ESPN Radio interview in Dallas. “It’s not so much cap room. It’s are you willing to take back money from other teams, particularly in these [tough economic] times?”
PA's $>Cuban's $
if that is true we can S&T Raef for $14m. A S&T has to have a 3 year min but only the 1st year is guaranteed. Raef and our $8m cap space and throw in a resigned Frye to even out salaries and get this puppy done.
If MC can do it we can do it better.

This game [referring to tonight’s Denver game] matters to the Lakers because they have a schedule-makers loss tomorrow night. A late game, with national television time outs to drag it out, in LA then fly up to Portland for a game the next night against a good team in a great environment. There are games you look at when the schedule comes out and think there is a plot against your team. That is one of those games. So the Lakers need the win tonight.
Sounds a little defeatist for a Laker blog, doesn’t it?

I've been rooting for the Lakers against fellow Western contenders all season...
… but today I don’t much care. Denver can lock up the division at home against Sac regardless of what happens in this game or any other Blazer game.
All I want today is for the game to tire the Lakers out as much as possible.
if the nugs loose
than portland’s magic number for the division falls to 6
bayless leaves over my dead body
Oden v Bynum
There will be a glimpse of the future tomorrow night against the Lakers. Oden vs. Bynum. It may only be for a brief minute or two, but do believe that Greg Oden will be battling Bynum for years to come.
I'm conflicted in the Hou-Sac game
I’m of the opinion that Houston is the worst possible matchup for us, and them winning tonight increases the chances that they win the division, knocking the Spurs down into a 4-5 matchup with us.
On the other hand, the Rockets losing tonight would be a major help to us in our hopes of grabbing the 3 seed, and facing what could be an even better first round matchup against New Orleans.
No conflict at all for me
We have a great chance to win our four remaining games, with two against sub-.500 opposition (only lost to GS in this category with Blake healthy) and one against a division clinched Denver.
If Houston loses one game, then we’ll be at least the fourth seed. San Antonio is not likely to win out, with them having lost four of their last six and Duncan hurt.
Houston losing means three seed.
draft dejuan blair
we have a shot to win out, but I think we'll drop one, either to the Lakers or in the tricky back to back @ the Clippers
At this point, I’m not even totally convinced the Spurs aren’t a better matchup than NO though— SA really seems beatable.
On the other hand, being the 3 seed would mean a likely matchup with Denver in round 2 if we got through NO, and that feels a lot more winnable than round 2 vs. LA.
I guess Sac winning helps us, but I really don’t want to play Houston, even with homecourt.
We will beat LA tomorrow night. Also, we’ve lost to two sub-.500 teams with Blake healthy.
We have a 60% chance of winning out.
draft dejuan blair
I disagree
I’d give us about a 65% chance to win tomorrow, a 60% chance to win on a back-2-back vs. Clips, a 90% chance to beat OKC and a 75% chance to beat Denver.
Multiplying out, that would be a 26% chance of winning out. I could tweak those and go as high as ~35% but I wouldn’t go any higher than that.
I put our chances against Denver at 95%
as they will have clinched and won’t be playing for anything.
draft dejuan blair
that's a good point
I still don’t think I can give us more than a 50% chance of pulling the sweep of the LA/LA back-2-back.
no we need ho to win out and SA to fall once and we tie sa
hou has to win the division leaving sa NOT the winner and due to out tiebreak we will have HC with the 4th and they will be 5th.
"Damn the Blazers. Damn them to hell. They are working the rest of the league like a speed bag." - Bill Simmons 6/26/08
why not have Houston lose?
As long as we don’t lose, we’ll be the three seed. San Antone will lose a game.
draft dejuan blair
because we cannot have Hou and SA tie as SA has tiebreak over Hou
SA would have to lose 2 games if Hou lost 1. I suppose that either SA losing 2 or Hou winning out are pretty equal odds but who knows.
"Damn the Blazers. Damn them to hell. They are working the rest of the league like a speed bag." - Bill Simmons 6/26/08
well
if we are one game up, both of them losing one game, tiebreakers won’t matter. There won’t be a tie. We’ll be the clear three seed.

true but I want SA not hou or NO
4th and SA would be my wish

I would want New Orleans, and then Denver in the second round.
New Orleans is less scary than San Antonio. I watch almost every game they play… they are just not doing well right now.
draft dejuan blair
Better get the wins for us and the losses for the opposition now
We can still throw the game against Denver if the team feels that gives them a friendlier matchup
I'd like to know
if Hinrich isn’t what people want, what do we want in a point guard?
draft dejuan blair
my list (in order of importance)
defense
three point shooting
ability to create own shot off the dribble/penetrate
able to defer to Roy in clutch situations, playing the off-guard
bigger to match up with Williams and Billups
draft dejuan blair
PAUL!!
no Blake is fine we have Roy to handle the ball and Blake to back him up and hit 3s
Blake is 5th A/to and Roy is 21st and 26th and 29th in total A
we’re fine.
"Damn the Blazers. Damn them to hell. They are working the rest of the league like a speed bag." - Bill Simmons 6/26/08
I love the guy as a backup. It’s just that he has had bad mistakes in three or four clutch situations this year, can’t guard the good point guards we face, and can’t penetrate effectively.
Steve is a fantastic third guard. He and Hinrich could play together against a lot of second units.
draft dejuan blair
the thing is
with the new handcheck rules you either funnel your man into the post D’er or you get called for fouls like Bayless for being too aggressive.
I think these days PG D is an oxymoron with these new handcheck rules. The days of GP are gone, he would be fouled out by half if he played the way he did back then, so it’s important but not as much as earlier
"Damn the Blazers. Damn them to hell. They are working the rest of the league like a speed bag." - Bill Simmons 6/26/08
doesn't that place an even higher premium on guys that can defend?
Hinrich moves his feet incredibly well and can really play D.
draft dejuan blair
I would take in this order
1. 3 point shooting
2. defense
3. able to feed the post and set up the offense
4. run pick and roll and create shots for others

...things go well I might be showing my O face...O...O...O...you know what I'm talking about.
Blake to Hinrich
is basically Webster’s salary. He probably doesn’t have room on the roster and will have to go.
Pryz already makes good money, and Batum/Rudy still have three years of cheap contract remaining.

but in between that we have to re-sign
Roy (mass contract)
Alderidge
Outlaw
...things go well I might be showing my O face...O...O...O...you know what I'm talking about.
But we will have to pay a point guard at some point
if we want a good one.
Plus, Batum and Rudy won’t need contracts until Hinrich is off the books.
draft dejuan blair
I guess I'm holding out that Bayless might be that guy
Blake can move to the back up in 2-3 years and we can use our cap room on a bruiser pf to spell LMA and play along Oden/Pryz and to resign our big names

But until then, I would love to see a veteran like Hinrich or Miller run the point. Blake if there is no decent deal available. Just please no Bibby.

yeah
but the kid has an incredible work ethic and great athleticism. I’m willing to give him a few years to figure it out.
draft dejuan blair
How long can you wait? Apparently KP is willing to wait, hoping for some Arenas/Ellis/Parker/whatever
Here’s what I do know about Bayless. He’s the hardest worker I’ve ever seen. Not been around, not talked about, that I’ve ever seen. The kid is a tireless worker. […]
There’s so many things on Bayless’s side that it’s important to look at the long term with him.
I can wait a couple years if he shows some improvement
but sometimes a guy just doesn’t have it. Tireless work ethic doesn’t always equal massive improvement.
true
as I’ve said before, I thought the pick made a ton of sense at the time, but the early returns have been flat out abysmal.
People are really high on Westbrook. And the guy has strengths but also holes in his game like a fishnet.
Even the guys at FreeDarko who are really high on individual players called him “a cross between Wade and the Drunken Master”. I think Bayless can be on that level with playing time. The ideal guard next to Roy is hardly a pure point guard handling the ball all the time, so someone like that might work very well.
I agree with all points
Bayless has the talent to get to Westbrook’s level. Unfortunately, he fell woefully, epically short this year. A guy of his talent ought to be able to earn some minutes in place of Blake and Sergio, but he has not come close to doing so.
Nah, he's got 2 years to develop, as long as he doesn't have a nervous breakdown first...
Pontiff of the Pryz for Prez Posse...
yes, but come on now-- Beno Udrih has stretches where he looks unstoppable
Flashes don’t really tell us that much.
I agree
I’m just trying to say that Bayless was not abysmal when given time. He’s not good in spot minutes, but performed decently when playing consistently.

We don't have to decide on Bayless until it is time to extend him or his contract runs out, do we?

the sixers cant make a free throw tonight
Both teams are shooting 53% have 28 rebounds 20 assists, and have fewer than 10 turnovers and it’s a blowout! The big difference is that CHC is 19-19 from the line and sixers 11-21

this is why I think Portland is the worst matchup for LA in the playoffs
sufficient big men to give Gasol and Bynum trouble unless the refs decide to screw us
The thing with us versus the L*kers that worries me is
we don’t have many advantages against them. If you look at the position match ups we arguably might lose every single position. One of our biggest advantages is our length and athleticism and LA can match us, plus their defense is much better.

I'd be ecstatic if the Portland Trail Blazers had someone like Brook Lopez playing at power forward; ...
yet, the erratic LaMarcus Aldridge — who’s still tends to play way too soft at that spot — will have to suffice in the meantime.
I know that to be true, but he must keep this up in the long run.

But he had provable mental hiccups in the past. And my theory is that will happen to him in the NBA at least once (you might already count the last final series as not the best time of his career). And with Lamar on the roster too who is always good for bricking the first of two big free throws, that might come to haunt the Lakers in a series this year.

Andre Miller has been flying under the radar his entire career. He would be a perfect upgrade and a perfect fit for this team. Send Serg and Lafrentz to Philadelphia for this savvy vet. Blake and Miller would be interchangeable a la Pryzbilla/Oden.

Adding
a veteran FA to come in and start at PG doesn’t really seem to be KP’s MO. He’s clearly shown a bias for organic growth and he has a soft spot for Blake — didn’t want to trade him for Magloire and made picking him back up a priority. I don’t see him undercutting Blake like this for chemistry reasons.
The Michael Ruffin of BlazersEdge, cuz Amlmart said so.
by BlazersOrBust on Apr 9, 2009 8:51 PM PDT up reply actions
I think it makes sense
from a fantasy basketball perspective. But you have a team that has vastly exceeded expectations and is only scratching the surface of its potential. You don’t need to make that move to try to push the team over the top yet. Blake might very well be good enough to win a championship, but we have to get close to a championship to find that out, and adding Miller and supplanting Blake might be one step forward and two steps back. If we didn’t trade for Wallace or Carter, I don’t think we’ll sign Miller. Same rationale applies in both instances.

He's never had
all the pieces in place for a hugely successful team either. Given how much success the Blazers have had to this point, and when you consider that Martell will be coming back and Greg will most likely be getting more minutes (supplanting two current starters) I have a very difficult time envisioning that we’re going to sign Miller to introduce three new starters to a lineup that just won 50+ games and is ridiculously young to boot.

don't like the Fakers. not one little bit.
My banker Darnell at Century Bank grew up rooting for the Fakers and he just can’t get it out of his system. He says he bleeds purple and gold. I told him last time we spoke that he ought to consider switching his allegiances, being as how the Blazers are really hot and getting hotter, and being as how he lives in Oregon and all. He said nah he can’t switch, he’s a Faker fan all the way. But he respects the Blazers. And I respect Darnell because he knows a lot about hoops. When I go in there he always asks me how my practice is going and I quickly turn the conversation around to hoops. I asked him if he heard about Kobe & Vanessa’s maid suing Kobe and Vanessa for treating her like a slave and making her stick her hand in a bag of slimy garbage. He said he didn’t hear about that but it didn’t surprise him because Vanessa is kind of a snooty little dirtbag with an overinflated sense of entitlement. Actually, I said that. Darnell would never talk lilke that. He’s very polite. And I gotta hand it to him because he knows a lot about hoops. I doubt he’ll ever root for the Blazers but I guess you never know. I bet he’s watching the game right now and thinking about Birdman and his shot blocking prowess. Maybe when he sees Kobe he thinks about Vanessa’s maid and that lawsuit. They’ll likely settle out of court and let the lawyer take 35% right off the top for his semi-annual trip to the Bahamas. Life is just like that sometimes.

I'd love him to stay, he can just get a lot more $ somewhere else, while he can still play

I like frye, actually
but he has shown both this season and last (IMO) that he is ineffective in spot minutes. Playing behind Travis and LMA, that’s all he’s gonna get. I’d rather bring in somebody who will throw his weight around and get boards and putbacks a la Z-Bo before he got entitled.

I have no real good basketball argument for keeping him. I just like him, like that he eats 89 wings on East Burnside, like that he thinks Pok Pok is the greatest, like that when I was talking to my mom a couple weeks ago she said, “Guess what – I saw Channing Frye at the library again.” AGAIN!!!!

The Beast Mode Aldridge vs Pau matchup should be interesting
as will be the Bynum v Oden, Blake v Fisher, Outlaw v Odom, Rudy v Ariza, and the headliner:
Kobe v Roy
yes but
I’m talking more about player roles than matchups
Kobe and Roy are the stars, Outlaw and Odom (now at least) are the 6th men, Bynum and Oden are the young, promising centers, Pau and LMA are the 2nd scoring options and both are PFs, etc.

Blazers have an excellent record at home.
Superstar talent in Roy & the incredible hulk L-Train
Bigs that matchup well with Pau & Bynum (Gregzilla, LMA)
