Gameday Open Thread: Strange Bedfellows

Here is an open thread so you can follow and comment on the Nuggets-L*kers game tonight.  It's the late game on TNT, starting at 7:30 p.m.

In one of the weirder twists of fate in this seeding battle, Portland fans would benefit from a L*ker win tonight.  If Denver loses tonight our hopes for the division crown are still alive.  It's one of the only nights in history where you might find us hoping that the purple and gold guys do well.

Never fear, though.  The Blazers are next up for L.A.  As soon as this game ends it's back to hating with a vengenace...vengeance that will hopefully be taken out in spades tomorrow evening.

Goodbye Staples center! Erm. Not that I would want anyone to actually get hurt.

Of all the things that can be expressed in the printed word – love, hate, fear, joy – true humor is the one that is the most difficult of all. Sarcasm, for example, is an art of delicate subtlety. Yet too many people wield it as a bulldozer – loud, smelly, ugly, and destructive – and think they are being funny.

I seriously doubt they will beat out Utah and NO

Dallas loses out on both tiebreakers, and would have to make up two games on NO to be the sixth seed. New Orleans will win at least one of their games against Dallas, meaning that they would only have to win one other game.

Also, this game doesn't actually matter, because Denver wins the division and LAL has already won the conference.

The things we have to root for:

1) Blazers to win out.

2) SAS to drop at least one more.

3) No Blazers to get hurt.

He has mad hops, while Varejao just has mad hair :)

Of course he has flaws, but is much younger, a better scorer and a better shot blocker while being about equal in rebounding. It was pretty reasonable that the Bulls could have created a package for Amare around him. LaMarcus looks to be significantly better so the Blazers got the better end of that deal, but he is not a bad guy and thus not available.

I see your points

But still do not see that Thomas is ever going to have that basketball common sense required to improve his game.

Don’t get me wrong, I never wanted to give up LaMarcus for Thomas. I probably wouldn’t even really want him on the Blazers. But he won’t be some bust in this league. He is already too skilled for that, and he does work to improve his game in the offseason (e.g. with Thorpe).

Hinrich's contract is untenable, I don't think PA wants to pay luxury tax for a small upgrade at the pg spot

Besides, I like what Blake brings on the offensive end for our team and he competes defensively, he just has trouble containing ultra-quick pgs.

In other news word is that KP to do a sign and trade with Raef to the Cavs for Lebron as they are a small market team as well, and scientists from PA’s Vulcan group have created a time machine and are going back to 1990 and bring back Terry Porter as our PG.

Dave has put a moratorium on trade talk. But in general I think Cuban has a good point (and if PA is willing to be a buyer, so could we):

“I think we’ve got the No. 1 trading asset available and that’s money,” Cuban said in a recent ESPN Radio interview in Dallas. “It’s not so much cap room. It’s are you willing to take back money from other teams, particularly in these [tough economic] times?”

Interesting take from Forum Blue & Gold
This game [referring to tonight’s Denver game] matters to the Lakers because they have a schedule-makers loss tomorrow night. A late game, with national television time outs to drag it out, in LA then fly up to Portland for a game the next night against a good team in a great environment. There are games you look at when the schedule comes out and think there is a plot against your team. That is one of those games. So the Lakers need the win tonight.

Sounds a little defeatist for a Laker blog, doesn’t it?

I'm conflicted in the Hou-Sac game

I’m of the opinion that Houston is the worst possible matchup for us, and them winning tonight increases the chances that they win the division, knocking the Spurs down into a 4-5 matchup with us.

On the other hand, the Rockets losing tonight would be a major help to us in our hopes of grabbing the 3 seed, and facing what could be an even better first round matchup against New Orleans.

by jksnake99 on Apr 9, 2009 6:39 PM PDT reply actions

No conflict at all for me

We have a great chance to win our four remaining games, with two against sub-.500 opposition (only lost to GS in this category with Blake healthy) and one against a division clinched Denver.

If Houston loses one game, then we’ll be at least the fourth seed. San Antonio is not likely to win out, with them having lost four of their last six and Duncan hurt.

Houston losing means three seed.

At this point, I’m not even totally convinced the Spurs aren’t a better matchup than NO though— SA really seems beatable.

On the other hand, being the 3 seed would mean a likely matchup with Denver in round 2 if we got through NO, and that feels a lot more winnable than round 2 vs. LA.

I guess Sac winning helps us, but I really don’t want to play Houston, even with homecourt.

by jksnake99 on Apr 9, 2009 6:50 PM PDT up reply actions

We will beat LA tomorrow night. Also, we’ve lost to two sub-.500 teams with Blake healthy.

We have a 60% chance of winning out.

draft dejuan blair

by Cablinasian on Apr 9, 2009 6:51 PM PDT up reply actions

I disagree

I’d give us about a 65% chance to win tomorrow, a 60% chance to win on a back-2-back vs. Clips, a 90% chance to beat OKC and a 75% chance to beat Denver.

Multiplying out, that would be a 26% chance of winning out. I could tweak those and go as high as ~35% but I wouldn’t go any higher than that.

I put our chances against Denver at 95%

as they will have clinched and won’t be playing for anything.

because we cannot have Hou and SA tie as SA has tiebreak over Hou

SA would have to lose 2 games if Hou lost 1. I suppose that either SA losing 2 or Hou winning out are pretty equal odds but who knows.

I love the guy as a backup. It’s just that he has had bad mistakes in three or four clutch situations this year, can’t guard the good point guards we face, and can’t penetrate effectively.

Steve is a fantastic third guard. He and Hinrich could play together against a lot of second units.

the thing is

with the new handcheck rules you either funnel your man into the post D’er or you get called for fouls like Bayless for being too aggressive.

I think these days PG D is an oxymoron with these new handcheck rules. The days of GP are gone, he would be fouled out by half if he played the way he did back then, so it’s important but not as much as earlier

by jksnake99 on Apr 9, 2009 7:07 PM PDT up reply actions

People are really high on Westbrook. And the guy has strengths but also holes in his game like a fishnet.

Even the guys at FreeDarko who are really high on individual players called him “a cross between Wade and the Drunken Master”. I think Bayless can be on that level with playing time. The ideal guard next to Roy is hardly a pure point guard handling the ball all the time, so someone like that might work very well.

by Norsktroll on Apr 9, 2009 7:08 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree with all points

Bayless has the talent to get to Westbrook’s level. Unfortunately, he fell woefully, epically short this year. A guy of his talent ought to be able to earn some minutes in place of Blake and Sergio, but he has not come close to doing so.

It featured e.g. imaginary conversations of Qyntel Woods about his life with his magical white weed smoking horse that were hilarious. But the language was really rated R and it had very few commenters because you didn’t want to mess with the author.

Then write a “Kobe is the G.O.A.T.”, “Why Bynum is the greatest center of his generation”, “I hate Lamar Odom” post once per month. And for the rest refer to news from ESPN, SI, Yahoo, etc.

when Denver came to Portland this year, Birdman got ejected because he got t’d up for freaking out on Joel. It was the one game I’ve ever been courtside in my life. Birdman bumps Joel after the Nuggets score and is jawing at him on the way back up the court, and Joel gives him the worst/best looking of cutting disdain I’ve ever seen and offered that rejoinder. Birdman freaked and got tossed. Soooo funny.

by Norsktroll on Apr 9, 2009 8:49 PM PDT up reply actions

Adding

a veteran FA to come in and start at PG doesn’t really seem to be KP’s MO. He’s clearly shown a bias for organic growth and he has a soft spot for Blake — didn’t want to trade him for Magloire and made picking him back up a priority. I don’t see him undercutting Blake like this for chemistry reasons.

Blake the long-term backup...

Pontiff of the Pryz for Prez Posse...

by timbo on Apr 9, 2009 8:54 PM PDT up reply actions

I think it makes sense

from a fantasy basketball perspective. But you have a team that has vastly exceeded expectations and is only scratching the surface of its potential. You don’t need to make that move to try to push the team over the top yet. Blake might very well be good enough to win a championship, but we have to get close to a championship to find that out, and adding Miller and supplanting Blake might be one step forward and two steps back. If we didn’t trade for Wallace or Carter, I don’t think we’ll sign Miller. Same rationale applies in both instances.

Most PGs do

and the savvy veteran teams have good team schemes in place to deal with those jitterbugs. We’re not there yet but we will be.

KP wanted to let it ride at the trade deadline and I think he’ll take that same mentality into the offseason, ESPECIALLY if we win a round or two.

The Michael Ruffin of BlazersEdge, cuz Amlmart said so.

by BlazersOrBust on Apr 9, 2009 8:59 PM PDT up reply actions

He's never had

all the pieces in place for a hugely successful team either. Given how much success the Blazers have had to this point, and when you consider that Martell will be coming back and Greg will most likely be getting more minutes (supplanting two current starters) I have a very difficult time envisioning that we’re going to sign Miller to introduce three new starters to a lineup that just won 50+ games and is ridiculously young to boot.

My banker Darnell at Century Bank grew up rooting for the Fakers and he just can’t get it out of his system. He says he bleeds purple and gold. I told him last time we spoke that he ought to consider switching his allegiances, being as how the Blazers are really hot and getting hotter, and being as how he lives in Oregon and all. He said nah he can’t switch, he’s a Faker fan all the way. But he respects the Blazers. And I respect Darnell because he knows a lot about hoops. When I go in there he always asks me how my practice is going and I quickly turn the conversation around to hoops. I asked him if he heard about Kobe & Vanessa’s maid suing Kobe and Vanessa for treating her like a slave and making her stick her hand in a bag of slimy garbage. He said he didn’t hear about that but it didn’t surprise him because Vanessa is kind of a snooty little dirtbag with an overinflated sense of entitlement. Actually, I said that. Darnell would never talk lilke that. He’s very polite. And I gotta hand it to him because he knows a lot about hoops. I doubt he’ll ever root for the Blazers but I guess you never know. I bet he’s watching the game right now and thinking about Birdman and his shot blocking prowess. Maybe when he sees Kobe he thinks about Vanessa’s maid and that lawsuit. They’ll likely settle out of court and let the lawyer take 35% right off the top for his semi-annual trip to the Bahamas. Life is just like that sometimes.

The Beast Mode Aldridge vs Pau matchup should be interesting

Kobe v Roy

yes but

I’m talking more about player roles than matchups

Kobe and Roy are the stars, Outlaw and Odom (now at least) are the 6th men, Bynum and Oden are the young, promising centers, Pau and LMA are the 2nd scoring options and both are PFs, etc.

Blazers have an excellent record at home.

Superstar talent in Roy & the incredible hulk L-Train

Bigs that matchup well with Pau & Bynum (Gregzilla, LMA)

A better 2nd unit.

Solid wingman/role player in Batum who can focus solely on shadowing Kobe. This is the only one of two places where I think the Rockets edge us. Ron Artest & Shane Battier are good defenders.

The other spot is experience-although I dont know if experience losing repeatedly in the 1st round counts.

TNT inside the NBA

So Kenny just went through a formula that the Rockets in their championship run used as a “calming factor” to win on the road.

1. Good Coach
2. Good Bench
3. Star Bench Player
4. 2 Scoring Dominators
5. 1 Scoring Beast
6. LUCK

Not one of the highlights showed a Blazer but I think we have all of those components in some form.

Coach Nate

Defense has come to life, that looks promising. We need to get in Kobe’s grill Friday night and shut him down. Joel and Greg can take care of Pal and Andrew. Big night for Nicholas and redemption for Rudy

Jalen Rose

Says the team he thinks can give lakers trouble in playoffs is Utah. Hello, portland is going for 8 i a row at home and is a different team than a month a go, let alone when they last played in LA.

Not one ESPN, TNT or otherwise announcer has mentioned the Blazers

No surprise on that though

The Jazz?? contesting the Lakers? um, no.

I am liking Sergio's production lately.

He’s been getting to the hoop lately and breaking/clearing the defense. Turnovers are low and he’s playing with grit. Anybody else notice? I think we need him to add his part of consistency to the bench. Stepping up a bit eh?
