Congratulations to Oden for 500 points in the NBA. He is now better than...
With yesterday's game, he exactly hit this milestone (points from field goals and free throws combined). Which is less than many might have hoped for before the season (e.g. Rudy already has 755), but at least he achieved that and last year we would have been very happy about 500 points. And we all know scoring is not his main task or strength at the moment.
Greg, you now officially have a better rookie season as a scorer than those players (below some selection and not in real order, since the beginning of the three point era):
- Your friend Mike Conley Jr. (time to mock him a bit)
- Steve Blake
- Martell Webster
- Sergio Rodriguez
- Shavlik Randolph
- Joel Przybilla (thanks Dave)
- Travis Outlaw (better don't remind him of his rough start in the league)
- Jerryd Bayless (don't anger the Rex)
- Nicolas Batum (with 414 it's at least highly likely)
- Nate McMillan (how is that for bragging rights)
- Kevin Pritchard (don't mock him too much, you want that next max contract)
- John Stockton (Hall of Fame)
- Steve Nash (MVP, MVP)
- Devin Harris
- Jose Calderon
- Dennis Rodman (well, get one more point)
- Mehmet Okur
- Chris Kaman
- Joakim Noah
- Tyrus Thomas
- Eddy Curry
- Tyson Chandler
- Al Jefferson
- P.J. Brown
- Dan Majerle
- Jerome Kersey
- Kevin Duckworth
- Tracy McGrady
- Monta Ellis
- Peja Stojakovic
- Kyle Korver
- Dirk Nowitzki (MVP)
- Hedo Turkoglu
- Detlef Schrempf
- David Lee
- Theo Ratliff
- Spencer Hawes
- Anderson Varejao
- Leon Powe
- Luc Longley (MJ's center)
- Kwame Brown
- Erick Dampier
- Jamaal Magloire
- Jermaine O'Neal
- Ben Wallace
- J.J. Redick
- Derek Fisher
- Jordan Farmar
- Kurt Rambis
- Michael Phelps
- Devin Durrant
- ...
Special guest from all eras: Bill Walton. The list is very long. Congrats big fella. Big up yourself.

Amazing
Considering he missed a third of the season. And doubly amazing considering he usually only plays about 20 minutes due to foul trouble… Next year’s expectations may be very high for him… I’m thinking 15 points 12 boards and 3 blocks a game is a very attainable goal
With that dot-dot-dot at the end of the title
I was half afraid you were going to say his scoring total was now better than Joel Przybilla.
Lifetime.
—Dave
Add him to the list
I stopped at somewhere around 150 points, so initially I missed Travis and others.
He has a ways to go still before surpassing Przybilla's lifetime scoring
He has, however, surpassed Pryzbilla’s highest scoring year when he had 488 points in 2004-2005.

And how many of these guys missed the entire season
the year before after only playing one collegiate year?
Trust me Oden is going to be incredible in two seasons…
He will show something in the playoffs too…
He has always played for a title when he was in an organized season from 7th grade on, he knows how to win…

i must stop you according to some veteran BEdger!!!
if it wasn't for food, baby-making, and Blazers playoff tickets, i wouldn't be working
Thanks for the reference...
I need to look up durant though. That just doesn’t seem right… no… wait… devin durant, not kevin. You sly dog. You had me for a sec!
The goal is not to be better, the goal is to be the best.
distracted at work with interuptions
To more correctly title my above post. “Thanks for the information and links.”
The goal is not to be better, the goal is to be the best.
I <3 you Greg.
Way to make this happen…next year you can double it :)

Greg was a #1 pick in 2007, but missed his first season due to microfracture surgery. This is news, since it’s still mentioned in every other article.
His stats
Are actually really good… It seems like we put our focus on his fouls, but he’s also doing everything else in limited minutes. Almost 9 pts and 7 rbs are solid numbers.
I personally wouldn’t have noticed that unless you pointed that out. Thanks Norsktroll!
um, why is Michael Phelps on this list?
is there a basketball player named michael phelps? if so, that is hilarious and ironic.
I Blazersedge daily, nightly and ever so rightly.
points or girls?

No, just rookies
If you really narrow it down to 21 year old 7 footers, the list becomes very small. Don’t make Greg sad.
Although if you widen it to 20-21 and 6’11-7’0 it gets a bit better again.
Mhm, it's not as bad as I thought
To reverse the theory you just brought up, how many 21 year old 7 footers were better (healthier) scorers than Greg? Pau Gasol, Brad Daugherty, Benoit Benjamin, Andrew Bogut, Andrea Bargnani, Nenad Krstic, Stanley Roberts. Not many, not even if you include younger ones. If you include 22 year olds, Hakeem gets on the list.
Thanks
I was just joshing though. I don’t have a problem with someone comparing Dwight Howard’s rookie year with Oden’s if you’re just using it to make a point that Howard improved his next year and hopefully Oden will.
My personal belief is that it is only cool to compare rookies to rookies and vets by position to other vets regardless of age. I don’t care how long they’ve been in the league and I think it is foolish to project a career for anyone based on another player. We don’t know if Kevin Durant will be the next Tracy McGrady or the next Jay Williams.
This signature intentionally left blank.
Thanks Tom. Well, now I have conclusive evidence who Greg Oden will be
Judging by rookie year, points, rebounds, blocks, and minutes played: The next Robert Parish. It’s the only player on the list (unless you take out the blocks). I like that :)
Testing my new sig
Greg Oden = Robert Parish. The only other rookie with more than 500 points, 399 rebounds, and 66 blocks, but under 1400 minutes played. Since 1946.
If you loosen the criteria a bit, you can add Len Elmore, Bill Garnett, Rich Kelley, Roy Tarpley, Dwight Jones and as the only other active player Paul Millsap to the list. Also not that bad, but I just liked the short list with only one other player. Millsap and Oden are more similar than one might think if you compare height, position, draft rank, etc., but down to getting in foul trouble they are really not that different at the moment. Of course a second really healthy second would bring more clarity in which direction he develops.
Greg Oden = Robert Parish (HOF, 4x NBA champion, 9x NBA All-Star). The only other rookie with more than 500 points, 399 rebounds, and 66 blocks, but under 1400 minutes played. Since 1946.
