Post Spurs Geek Out Thread
There are plenty of things to be excited about after the game today.
We locked up a 50 win season. How many people thought we would be a 50 win team? I know I didn't predict 50 wins.
A 3-1 road trip that includes a 35 point blow out, two come from behind (double digit deficit) wins and a solid win against a Western conference playoff team.
The Blazers finally beat the Spurs at home after 11(?) straight losses in San Antonio.
The Blazers earned the tiebreaker against the Spurs.
I know there are a lot more things we can be excited about, but that's a good start.
What are you most excited about after this great win?

Amen to that
during that sequence where we started pulling away at the beginning of the fourth, he was defending the post when Gooden moved inside, moving his feet beautifully when he got switched onto a guard in the pick-and-roll, and vacuuming up EVERY single board after snuffing out the Spurs’ offense. The announcers couldn’t say enough good things about him.

Yeah
Greg had some great minutes there in the first half. I almost started crying when he fouled Udoka on that pump fake though. Thorpe hit the nail on the head in his chat today when he said that Greg’s overeagerness to make a play is the biggest causal problem for his foul trouble right now.

All of a sudden, Spurs-Blazers looks like a dream 1st round playoff matchup
If Duncan can’t get healthy, the Spurs would be in trouble with that one. Especially without home court advantage.
When we looked at this road trip, how many thought the Spurs game—a back-to-back at the end of the trip in a building the Blazers had lost 11 straight in—would be a Blazers’ win? Of course, no Manu and a gimpy Duncan helped. But still…
I loved how the Blazers kept their cool after the Spurs jumped all over them. They realized the Spurs would tire, and sure enough: the Spurs never scored over 18 points in a subsequent quarter.
"We don't back down to nobody." --Joel Przybilla
Yes, a Spurs matchup does look very favorable
No Manu, Duncan at 75% or less, plus the confidence that comes with beating the Spurs by double digits twice in one season.
"It’s a good ol’ fashioned Rip City beat down!"
They kept their cool a lot better than I did
I was texting my brother that I was reduced to drinking in the dark and making snarky comments like, “Hey, that’s the fourth time the Spurs have had more than double our score!” while my housemates laughed at me. When we were down 18 against the Griz, I was utterly confident we were coming back. Down 19 against the Spurs? Not so much. I’m thrilled to have been proven a negative Nancy.

Ok
Portland’s remaining schedule:
LA – on a back to back, Portland on the first game back from a road trip. I say Portland has a 60% chance of victory.
@ LAC – both teams on a back to back. This game scares me. 55% chance for Portland.
OKC – 90%. Late game against a bad team. This has to be a win.
DEN – I expect Denver to have clinched the division by this point. They’ll rest their starters. 95%.
Now, if we win out, and Houston and San Antonio each lose a game, then we have the third seed.
San Antonio schedule:
Utah
@Sac
@GS – b2b
New Orleans
They’ll lose one, right?
Houston schedule:
@Sac
@GS – b2b
New Orleans
@ Dallas
They might just win out.
draft dejuan blair
I don't care
if we’re third or fourth, honestly. In the scenario you describe it means playing the Spurs either way, and that’s trouble for San Antonio.
The Michael Ruffin of BlazersEdge, cuz Amlmart said so.

Ooops
in my head them being fifth = playing us. thanks for the correction. so let’s say we’re third and the spurs are fifth. who’s most likely to be sixth these days? the hornets, the jazz, or the mavs?
The Michael Ruffin of BlazersEdge, cuz Amlmart said so.
by BlazersOrBust on Apr 8, 2009 7:06 PM PDT up reply actions
Hornets
are a game up on the Jazz, who are a game up on the Mavs.
Jazz or Hornets matchup is probable.
draft dejuan blair
so we actually want
the jazz to beat the mavs tonight, because that makes it more likely that we’ll play the jazz if we make it to the third seed?
The Michael Ruffin of BlazersEdge, cuz Amlmart said so.
by BlazersOrBust on Apr 8, 2009 7:08 PM PDT up reply actions
not me
I want the Jazz to fall to 8th so they can give the Lakers all kinds of fits in the first round. If we miracle into 3rd (highly unlikey), I don’t mind a mathup with New Orleans. Heck, I’m not nearly as afraid of Dallas if they somehow rise up to 6th as a lot of other people are. but honestly, right now I’m just pulling for Houston to take the 3 seed leaving us with a 4/5 matchup with San Antonio. homecourt or not, I like our chances
How did you guys win that?
"We scored enough points. We scored 107, they scored 105.
-Nate McMillan Postgame, 3/4/2009
if we're third
we play the Hornets, a matchup I like. We’d then face either Denver, not a scary team, or Utah in the second round. Against Utah we’d have home court.
draft dejuan blair
So the hornets
are pretty well locked into 6th?

by QuebecBlzrFan on Apr 8, 2009 7:07 PM PDT up reply actions
Houston would be in the 4-5 bracket in that scenario
so we’d face the 2-7 winner.
draft dejuan blair
if 7th seed wins they have to face the 1st seed if they win...
no?
by QuebecBlzrFan on Apr 8, 2009 7:08 PM PDT up reply actions
what are the two brackets?
1-8 2-7 and 3-6 4-5? sorry for the barrage of questions. my blazers fandom demands that I begin figuring out all the playoff permutations that’ll get us to the WCF is all.

Meeting them sooner would give them less time to work Bynum into rotation thus, giving the Blazers larger blowouts, against the lakers.

I’m not that afraid of Dallas. we didn’t bring our A game any of the 3 times we played them. Besides:
1) I’d LOVE to see Utah in the 8th slot, as I think they could give the L*kers some trouble, and
2) I wouldn’t give the Mavs much chance to win a series over Denver, so seeing them in round 2 is highly unlikely, even in the highly unlikely event we get the 3rd seed.

Who’d have thought at the start of the season that Utah, New Orleans and San Antonio would be mediocre going in to the playoffs? It may be left to us to give the Lakers a little trouble on what looks like a smooth ride to the Finals. Are Houston or Denver any real competition for LA?

then their 2nd team came in and tried to push people around….cheap shotting Greg & such . . .it didn’t intimidate anyone. We played right through them…Duncan will be sharper – - but only so much. LMA is faster and elevates higher ’ ’ I liked the respect Duncan showed for Pryz…well deserved but also classy
Joel OWNED the boards for awhile there…made it look almost too easy

Amazing that the ESPN stat geeks
Have SA 3 Hou 4 and Blazers 5 in the west when we own the tie breaker with SA and all 3 teams have the same record
SA has the tiebreaker with Houston so they are a division leader so they have the tiebreaker with us
ESPN has it right

SA has tiebreaker over Hou, who have the tiebreaker over POR + a better conference record than POR

if SA wins the division
that is the ultimate tiebreaker. Then, we are matched with Houston, who has the tiebreaker over us.
Five seed.
draft dejuan blair
Houston has a good chance of getting the tiebreaker over SA
SA has a one win advantage in division record, but they only have 1 division game left while Houston has 2. So there are 4 possibilities:
-Houston and SA both win all remaining division games. In this case it goes to the next tiebreaker(see below) and Houston wins the tiebreaker.
-Houston wins both division games while SA loses. Houston wins.
-Houston wins 1 division game while SA loses it’s division game. It goes to the next tiebreaker(see below) and Houston wins (actually NO might be able to catch up and complicate things if this happens).
-Houston wins 0 or 1 division game while SA wins its division game. SA wins the tiebreaker.
*Next tiebreaker: conference record. Houston and SA are tied in conference record, and will still be tied at the end of the year if their overall record is still tied.
*Tiebreaker after that: conference record against playoff teams. Houston has a 1-win advantage. Since Houston needs to be at least equal to SA in remaining games against western playoff teams to tie the division record, Houston will win in this category in all cases where the tiebreaker has to go this far.
Basically, if Houston can match SA’s division record (and the chances of that are should be close to 50%), Houston will be able to win the tiebreaker. If Portland, Houston, and SA all end up tied (behind LAL and Denver, but ahead of everyone else) and Houston has the tiebreaker over SA, then it will be #3 Houston, #4 Portland, #5 SA

i guess if you want to stretch the definition of the word "great"
Magneto was right
MEMO TO KP-GET BIRDZILLA!
They were great for a few years, but became worse ever since. And that Marion deal but them in the wrong direction for good
I sometimes wish we could see their financial bottom line in retrospect
Was it a matter of them really not expecting any financial advantage to making 1 or 2 more runs to the title? Or were things simply that tight?
Hopefully a book is written later.
Their owner did pay the luxury tax for a while, but after they failed to win a title he went into cost saving mode
And that is never a good prerequisite for winning a title in the current NBA.
a book about the Suns' books?
that would be awesome….not…..7 Seconds or Less was good though
Magneto was right
MEMO TO KP-GET BIRDZILLA!
i'm not a suns expert
but it seemed as if he was unhappy in his situation there and was probably going to go anyways. i think the firing of dantoni was worse than trading marion in the end. when they went back to SSOL kerr basically admitted he was wrong.

That whole sequence actually reduced my opinion of the NBA as a whole slightly
Even if it’s technically correct, as a league you should never let the “bad guys” get away with one in such a tight series. It was one of the most frustrating non-Blazer moments of the decade for me.
Suspending the Suns during the altercation was unnecessary and reeked, even if technically correct (it depended on your definition of the incident on the court).
Does anyone else think Shaq's befriending of Brandon Roy...
…and his comments about Portland’s team reflect the fact he’d like to sneak up here to piggyback on one last attempt at a title in a year or two?
I’ll enjoy the fact that Shaq is watching the playoffs the same way I’ll be: on TV.

Back in February, Shaq befriended Roy at the NBA All-Star game in Phoenix, with the Blazers star guard standing in awe that he was actually sharing a locker room and eventually the floor with someone who once hung on his bedroom wall.
thx

at the ASG
when the West was feeding Shaq during that stretch in the 3rd quarter, Roy was getting in on it and enjoying the show as much as anyone. I’ll bet it was a pretty cool experience for him.

I imagine so
I also figured that when Kobe and Shaq (among others) talked about getting the young guys some time, it likely was related to their bonding before the game.
that would be the best center 3 some in the league
I’ll just let you all picture that……….
"It’s a good ol’ fashioned Rip City beat down!"
What to do with Shaq is a major issue for them
He is too expensive for a rebuilding roster. If they want to speed things up, they need to find a team that takes him on, but nobody will give up much young talent for him. The best they could hope for is probably for something like Eddy Curry or Erick Dampier in a package. Or the owner has to bite in a really bitter apple and buy him out.
It's going to be VERY hard to move Shaq.
I think that if shaq’s contract was movable, KP would have taken Dave’s advice, traded Raef+filler for him, then flipped him next year for a better available player.
But Shaq’s contract is so enormous, it’s likely impossible to make anything good out of it, and KP never gave it a second thought.
I still contend that was the second dumbest thing I've ever read at Blazer's Edge, with fatty's ...
off-the-wall, unintelligible rant — which somehow made the main page — easily taking home the gold in that category.
I honestly think KP would have considered acquiring Shaq as a player/mentor...
… if he didn’t have that contract. The contract is an albatross. But a very nice albatross for Shaq, of course.
there's a fat joke to be made here
something about a 10 foot pole not being enough to actually get away or something……..
I’m tired so let’s just pretend I made a good joke and move on
"It’s a good ol’ fashioned Rip City beat down!"
Once again, this insane thought of Portland acquring Shaquille O'Neal has bad idea written all over it.
At any rate, I bet that O’Neal will get traded to the Dallas Mavericks this off-season — which is something I wrote an in-depth fan shot about earlier tonight — so y’all can take that forwhatever it’s worth.
Shaq in Dallas would be entertaining.
I’ll say that much. Cuban and Shaq together. It’s like Twitter’s dream.
BTW keep in mind that I meant Shaq would want to come to Portland...
..after his current contract expires, and he reconsiders on retiring.
My guess is that after Shaquille O'Neal's contract expires, he'll either retire or latch onto a ...
team that’s in win-now mode, will let him start when he’s healthy, and feed his need for attention.
I'm curious if Shaq will retire gracefully, or hang on 1 or 2 years too long.
I imagine he’s befriending people he thinks might help him later.
Think Shaq would play backup and mentor to Oden in order to get one last shot at a ring? Seriously. I think he would. (I’m not sure I’d want him, just talking out loud)
Joel Przybilla is under contract though the 2010-2011 season, so I'm inclined to stick ...
with him ‘til that point and, in the meantime, try to bring in a third-string center via either free agency (e.g., Rasho Nesterovic, Robert Swift, et al.),the 2009 NBA Draft (e.g., Cole Aldrich, A.J. Ogilvy, et al.), or the team’s $2,912,823 trade exception (e.g., Josh Boone).
I'd be incredibly disappointed if we traded Joel during his contract.
Barring an unforeseen event of course.
that's actually not a bad idea
Dallas is pretty much in win-now mode. If they can come up with enough expiring salary to send to Phoenix, and then resign Kidd, they might have a hope to make one last run built on the Dirk/Kidd/Shaq threesome.
How did you guys win that?
