I don't think luck has anything to do with it.

Let’s see:
1. Refs need to stop being dumb. Seriously.
2. Start making shots…no brainer
3. Stop fouling…only possible if #1 happens.
4. Beat one of the worst teams in the league.

Conley’s a pure point, and he’s making “the jump” this year. B-Rex is a stud, but he’s definitely not resembling a PG yet, and he would hope to make similar improvement next year.

His hot spot chart looks actually very solid this year

Judging from that, there are many far spottier SF shooters. He is not always Supatrout, but which coach would not like to have potential instant offense coming off his bench.

by Norsktroll on Apr 7, 2009 7:49 PM PDT up reply actions

coach of the year is tough this year

Van Gundy, Sloan, Adelman, Mike Brown, Phil Jackson and Poppovich are all so deserving. Nate deserves mention, but not above the job those guys have done.

I originally felt Sloan might get it over SVG, Brown or Adelman

Utah’s (expected) slip really removes Sloan… Adelman is long-deserving, but I just don’t think the NBA really respects what he’s done this year or in the past.

He has

the league’s reigning MVP, a bench touted as one of the best in the NBA, and a second All-Star big in Gasol manning the paint. He has a team that was favored to win the Finals last year on track to return to the Finals. In my eyes, he’s done nothing more than what he ought to have done.

Nobody except for the more optimistic posters on this site predicted a 52-54 win season and a potential top-four seed for the Blazers this year. The Blazers have greatly exceeded expectations, and for that reason Nate ought to get the nod over Phil.

Of course, SVG or Adelman deserve it over either of those guys, but still.

The Michael Ruffin of BlazersEdge, cuz Amlmart said so.

Their bench is the worst of the playoff teams in the West

Well, maybe with Bynum back that won’t be the case, but when Odom/Ariza became starters, their bench became total crap.

by Zaig on Apr 7, 2009 8:10 PM PDT up reply actions

I definitely agree

but the fact that when their starters went down, he had starter-caliber guys to plug into the starting lineup is not a hugely convincing point in Phil’s ledger in the Jackson/McMillan COY showdown.

In theory we match up pretty good with them. In practice the Spurs are probably easier to beat which sounds odd. Or the Hornets, but we would have to move up a lot and it’s unlikely.

He returned to "his home" (as he put it) in the offseason

He admitted he missed Seattle, and was thrilled with how the town reacted to his previous appearance. So he chose Seattle over Atlanta so he could come home.

One of the few really upbeat stories about the Mariners. They almost blew it and missed out on him in the process though.

Didn't think we were taking that game.

Now we’re pretty comparable to the Spurs for tomorrow. Both traveling to SA after winning a back 2 back. Didn’t catch the Spurs/Thunder game, Duncan played ~33mins and Parker played ~35. Hope it was physical and they’re tired for tomorrow. But both Roy and LMA played big minutes today. We need to steal a win tomorrow.

But Roy and LMA need to rest. I know LMA plays long mins each game but he’s most likely going to be matched up against Duncan and needs to be able to stop him. But yet again, he got 5 fouls, and found ways to stay on the court

The refs stopped calling ticky-tack fouls on him (and there were a few they could have whistled) once he had five and it was clutch time.

by Timmay! on Apr 7, 2009 9:04 PM PDT up reply actions

Loved that.

That’s happened once or twice more in previous games. Oden will rack up five fouls but start playing well down the stretch, and the officials cut him some slack. He gets less ticky tack stuff called against him when he’s playing with a bounce in his step.
