Jason Kidd wins Western Conf. Player of Week LMA Snubbed!

So they announced the Western Conference player of the week.  Somehow they overlooked Lamarcus for Jason Kidd.  If you are confused I am with you. But look at Kidd's amazing stats for that week!

http://www.nba.com/2009/news/04/06/players.of.the.week/

Jason Kidd, Dallas Mavericks

March 31 @ Minnesota:
Collected eight points and 13 assists in a 108-88 win over the Timberwolves.

April 1 vs. Miami: Tallied 11 assists, three points and four rebounds in a 98-96 win over the Heat.

April 3 @ Memphis: Scored nine points and added 10 assists and five rebounds in a 107-102 loss to the Grizzlies.

April 5 vs. Phoenix: Netted 19 points to go along with a season-high 20 assists, and added four rebounds in a 140-116 win over the Suns.

Compare that to LMA

March 31st Vs Utah 26 points 5 Rebounds

April 3rd @ OKC 35 points 18 Rebounds

April 5th @ HOU 22 points 9 Rebounds

The other players nominated were Cleveland's LeBron James, Denver's J.R. Smith, Indiana's Danny Granger, Memphis' Mike Conley and Rudy Gay, Miami's Dwyane Wade, Portland's LaMarcus Aldridge and Toronto's Chris Bosh.

So really he was competing with J.R. Smith, Mike Conley and Rudy Gay.

So who should have been Western Confrerence Player of the week?

54 assists is impressive

But 39 points and 18 rebounds aren’t good at all.

I’m guessing that LMA only playing 3 games hurt him, that and Kidd’s 20 assists just looks really cool.

Does seem like 28/11 is better than 10/14 though.

by Zaig on Apr 7, 2009 10:35 AM PDT reply actions

I understand

Assists are cool but there has been a lot of discussion on what even counts as an assist lately, and the standards for what counts aren’t even set.

That being said Aldridge had point totals of 26,35 and 22 Kidd had 8,11,9,18.

Granted Kidd had more assists but I would give the nod to someone scoring over assists.

I hope I can get a bunch of championships, like 15. " - Greg Oden

I agreed with you.

My final line was 28/11 is better than 10/14. Either way, the 4 games vs 3 games and the “omg 20 assists” hype is why Kidd won.

I personally would have held his season averages against him in the rebounding category, but what do I know!

by Zaig on Apr 7, 2009 10:57 AM PDT up reply actions

both those lines are heavily context dependent

Not to go all egghead on you again, but in order to truly determine which was more impressive, its really important to look at what pace those games were played at, look at how efficiently the points were obtained, etc.

Ok pace adjusted what do those two players look like for the last week?

unfortunately, I don't know of a site that tracks weekly pace adjusted stats

given the Blazers slow pace, though, its reasonable to assume that pace-adjusting would make LMA’s week look even better.

by jksnake99 on Apr 7, 2009 11:09 AM PDT up reply actions

It would just make Kidd's 20 assist game look that much more impressive

yeah, he was playing the suns, but they had 81 points at the half, and he got those 20 assists in only 30 minutes of game time, and it’s not like LA’s big game was against the Cavs or anything.

Nah

Player of the week is just a fun little piece of nonsense. I’m all for advanced stats, but not for something like player of the week. That basically comes down to “Who dominated and who had pretty box scores.”

This was a lifetime achievement award

Kidd passed Magic Johnson on the list of career assist-ers.

LaMarcus picked a bad week to make his PotW bid. – Elgin

Agreed, and it was fair.

Kidd was phenomenal. LMA has many many many weeks, including this one, to get his due recognition.

I heart taxes.

yup

LMA had the technically better week, but you have to give props to J-Kidd on his monumental achievement.

LMA: 35 points, 18 rebounds against "OKC." Beaste!

He also became
  1. on the all time assist list. Which helps a lot. I voted for Kidd in the poll because of all the assists. Double digit assists 4 games in a row is impressive, and 20 in one game is really really impressive. If LMA’s 3 games had all been impressive double doubles, then he might have had a better chance of winning

Kidd has never had less than 9 assists in a game though

Might as well give him an award for breathing, he gets big assist numbers every day. He’s an assist whore.

I’d rather love a man who saves his assists for only me, and not pass it out all over town like a hussy.

Man, if only we was on ABC

That 19/20 game was on ABC and made such a big deal over, so really he got the award for one good game since the rest of his games this week are standard games for Kidd.

Honestly, I know LMA was playing well but I didn’t think it was Player of the Week worthy, so I didn’t even care that much when he didn’t get it— until I saw the other candidates, and that Kidd’s weak ass week won it. What the hell! LMA’s big play when we needed a surge and so many expected us to wilt under the pressure (we’re really young, you see, and even good young players just go cry in the corner under playoff pressure) and the way he did it— directly responding to all of our criticisms about not going inside and not rebounding enough…

Well, only we would notice that though, since we’re losers. His numbers look nice to the laymen too though, but our games weren’t getting as much attention as the Mavs and Suns battling for their playoff lives.

I really don’t mind, because I wanna see LMA keep it up before we start giving him awards. Just annoying when Kidd didn’t do anything special. Oh, besides pass Magic Johnson on the alltime assists list or whatever.

THAT’s what this is really about, dammit! Well, 18 rebounds is the new record for alltime soft PFs, and I don’t see ANYONE talking about that. Why does the media hate us?!?!

rec!

He does seem to play on another level when he is angry.

My favorite teams are the Blazers and any team that is playing the Lakers.
