Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

tony luftman

about 45 minutes from now the blazers will the rockets in what will be the biggest game of the season and in turn the biggest game since game 7 of the 03 series with dallas. about 15 minutes from now pregame coverage will start. it is these types of days that i have longed for while the blazers rebuilt from the ground up to get back to this point. so why am i not more excited? because i know before i can watch joel and yao take to center court for the opening tip, ill have to sit through the longest half hour in sports, the blazer pre game show hosted by tony luftman. every time i watch tony attempt to do his job i get angry. apparently the only requirements to be the blazers studio host were to speak english and smile constantly. i have been watching him for 2 seasons and i remained unconvinced that he truly knows anything about the game of basketball. i used to think that he along with "coach" holton were comically bad, but at this point im no longer laughing. i know that im not the only one to feel this way about what is FAR AND AWAY the biggest problem with this organization. im too dumb and lazy to do it myself, but somebody needs to make a website with the point of firing his @ss. if there is already such a website, which there should be, put up the link. were a playoff team again, we can do better than tony luftman.

Blazer’s in the playoffs. Beautiful weather and you make a post about the broadcast team. Does somebody have a case of the Monday’s?

Calm down

I don’t understand all this animosity toward Tony Luftman. His job is to look nice and wave to the camera. It’s not like he is calling the game or anything, all you have to do is press the mute button.

i wont calm down

until somebody makes a website dedicated to his demise. if thats all his job entails, why is he getting paid to do it? why not let a blazer fan do it for free each game?

I love Jerome Kersey. But...

He is horrible in the studio. He’s ok on Talking Ball. The sullen voice, the “you know”’s…

by G_dubs on Apr 5, 2009 5:24 PM PDT up reply actions

He doesn't look nice

And I’ve never seen him wave at the camera, so by your own standards he is a complete and utter failure.

To me, he seems like a nice guy and he was much better on the radio when I’ve heard him on the radio with my ears as his voice came through my radio’s speakers and my ears picked up the words he said through my radio’s speakers and my brain processed what was said and deciphered the meaning of the words Tony Luftman said on the radio that came out of my radio’s speakers and into my earhole and then, of course, my brain.

On TV, he is a giggly lil’ girl and I can’t figure out why. He needs to stop doing ‘jokes’, no more catch phrases (especially the one we ALL HATE, NO EXCEPTION), and no giggling for no damn reason.

My eyeholes agree with my earholes too.

exaggerations

biggest game of the year – we need to stop throwing this line out every other game
biggest problem with this organization – blackouts/lack of satellite deals

as far as my 2 cents with the luftman thing…sure i dont like him, and yes we can do better, but last i checked comcast was losing money as a company, and are probably losing money locally in the csn deal. we have the 3rd highest tv ratings of any nba team, yet i’m fairly confident that comcast will not turn a profit with csn for a few more years. upgrading their talent seems to be the least of their concern.

Luftman is hilariously bad.

Kersey has just proven that Holton’s not the issue.

and if your so upset about it why don’t you make the website.
You can take an online class at pcc for $80 bucks.
Or buy a book.
Also, an actual example of what makes him bad would help.

Legit beef.

You want examples? His speaking cadence is poor, his trademark “tell them what they won” is played out. It seems like he reads everything off of cards which is not OK. And honestly, he’s not a Portland guy, not a lifelong fan, and not entertaining.

i've watched them

I don’t think they are great, in fact I almost always walk away or change the channel when they are on, l just watch the game. You don’t have to watch them. All those examples have nothing to with basketball knowledge. They are just surface things. Also, they are all subjective. But I suppose that’s your right, and I wouldn’t care if he was gone.
Nima, so anyone who does not agree with you is blind or doesn’t know what they are talking about? That’s not nice, and why post things if you just want everyone to agree with you. Everyone is getting so angry around here, and instead of having discussions , just insulting people.

Somebody did a post about the worst....

Announcers and I threw Luftman to the wolves there. My point was this. The Blazers have made so many strides the last few years towards excellence. This simply isn’t one of them. He’s beyond laughable to something close to aggravating. I know he doesn’t help the team win, but he is one of the faces the Blazers choose to put out there. I’m embarrassed for him every time he’s on. I actually emailed the Blazers about him a couple weeks ago to voice this similar opinion. Obviously, I’ve received no response. Thank God for DVR’s.

...

I might be tempted to make a website about this, Luftman is seriously just horrible. Last year it was funny to see how bad he was not it’s embarrassing. He doesn’t even cover the game right or highlights of other games.

I’ve also been tempted to make a freeoden.com website about how ridiculous it is he keeps getting stupid fouls called on him and preventing him from playing when he is doing nothing different than other players. Like todays game, he came into a super physical game on both sides (We are talking about Ron Artest here) and gets a foul on Yao right away. He had 2 fouls in 3 minutes again but honestly is not doing anything different. I’m tired of it, I don’t know if the NBA or whatever is out to teach Oden a lesson and I don’t care that they call them rookie calls, it should be officiated equally.

I’ll freak out if they do it playoffs too.

Minor details

1. Seeing highlights of first half is fun
2. Might have missed part of the first half and want to see what happened
3. Shouldn’t HAVE to leave the room because of how fail the halftime show is
4. Want to see what else is going on around the NBA and see highlights from those games

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside.
