Barrett Fires 'Em Up

Head over and read this story from Mike Barrett about how emotion sometimes does play a role in victory.  Or at least in crushing victories.

That was a great read, there was a lot of discussion on that article here and it fired up the fans. I can only imagine how much it fired up the team. I would think brandon would be the most insulted though.

LaMarvelous I don't like your sig

I mean if you look through a season for any player you can find some good lines.
What’s that? Those are all in the last 2 weeks?
Wait, what? Those are 3 of his last 4 games?
Huh? Since March LMA is averaging 20.75ppg, 9.06rpb, and a ridiculous 3.375 orpg?

Weird

You are correct...
I mean if you look through a season for any player you can find some good lines.

And if anyone wants to put lines like these for BRoy or Oden or any of the other cool players on this team, into their sig, it would not bother me in the least.

I put these lines onto my sig for much the same reason that a person puts their best accomplishments into their resume – it looks impressive! You would never put your worst screw ups into your resume now would you?

I like Mike's blog, and I really like our Mike/Mike broadcast team

despite all the Mike Haters on this blog. I have had the misfortune of hearing most of the other play by play teams, and our guys are solid.

It’s time to surprise, embarrass, then destroy Houston on Sunday. Wooot woot!

Mike and Mike “haters”. They’ve both been good friends to our community. It’s just that 8-9 people with keyboards can seem like a crowd. People who like things seldom speak up as much as people complaining about them.

They're so incredibly personable too

I’ve had the occasion many times to meet our announcers, both radio and TV, and they are the nicest people you could ever meet. Rice has a potty mouth tho when he’s off the air lol

good point, I have always enjoyed the Mikes broadcasts

I for one enjoy Mike Rice

He’s not just color comedy, he’s comic relief. It’s not like he’s unaware of his role. And I’m a homer. I want my homer commentary to be homery.

It's more than diculous. It's REdiculous

by pxilpooshr on Apr 4, 2009 5:26 PM PDT up reply actions

Nothing personally against Mike Rice,

but it is possible to have a homery analyst who understands basketball. They are not mutually exclusive. The things that come out of Mike Rice’s mouth frequently make me think he is watching an entirely different game!

by Blazin' on Apr 4, 2009 11:27 PM PDT up reply actions

on the other hand,

our radio announcers are quite good. I have taken to watching the game muted with the radio on!

by Blazin' on Apr 4, 2009 11:38 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't live near Portland anymore

so in order to see Blazer games I have to buy the NBA league pass. They usually use the home team broadcast crew so road games are typically awful. Other broadcast teams have hardly any insight for either team and last nights OKC game was no exception. Somewhere I believe in the 2nd quarter they started to go in the direction of that article, “the Blazers have some problems” but they got sidetracked by a LA dunk and never finished….lucky for them.

Keep it up Mike and Mike, you’re doing great!

by JR25 on Apr 4, 2009 1:09 PM PDT up reply actions

Some opposing announcer teams are absolutely outstanding

Last year, the Sonics had a great team. New Jersey and the LA Clippers have great announcing teams.

They’re unfortunately balanced out by New Orleans and Cleveland.

by Timmay! on Apr 4, 2009 1:11 PM PDT up reply actions

That is true

NJ I believe has Marv Albert and Mike Fratello doing their games, they are pretty good.

by JR25 on Apr 4, 2009 1:12 PM PDT up reply actions

I guess it's difficult for some announcers for bad teams

they just can’t get into the games and get excited, they would be the only person raising their voice in the arena…

In the Rose Garden, Mike and Mike can up the volume level and not stand out

by JR25 on Apr 4, 2009 1:16 PM PDT up reply actions

The Nets also have Iain Eagle and some other dude.

The Clippers’ announcers are good and I don’t mind the ones for Houston either.

I would rather listen to 2.5 hours of dental drills than Cleveland’s team.

by torsoheap on Apr 4, 2009 1:17 PM PDT up reply actions

Now that I've had LP all season, it feels like Mike and Mike are probably around the 50th percentile

I bet if we asked a non-Blazer fan, M&M would be placed in the lowest 1/3. Being fans, we ignore or miss some of their comments that would annoy non-fans.

Unfortunately there’s a LOT of homer announcers in the NBA. Some of them seem prepared, others are clearly not. Mike and Mike are typically decently prepared, but still very homer. I can’t figure out if it’s just the general style, or if teams are explicitly asking for this kind of attitude.

My personality prefers a Steve Jones type of analyst over a Mike Rice style. I like MB, but he’s certainly homeresque.

(Plus, every time there’s a home game and my wife is watching… sooner or later she’ll look up and ask, “Is that announcer drunk?”. And she’s always asking about Mike Rice.)

by Timmay! on Apr 4, 2009 1:21 PM PDT up reply actions

Red Kerr was always drunk

and he was the perfect homer color guy. I think one of the reasons I don’t like Rice is that I’m unfairly comparing him to Red Kerr, on whom I grew up.

by sagcat on Apr 4, 2009 2:38 PM PDT up reply actions

It's bad...

when you are excited about your team being 18-24 (now 25) since the beginning of the new year. I can’t say that I haven’t been there, 32 wins felt great two years ago when the expectation was much lower.

Did Jeff Green and Durant play last night? Who was the third of their big three?

Oden took out westbrook psychologically

By accidentally hitting him in the face, thereby traumatizing him. The mikes highlighted the fact that blake and aldridge made the dunders pay by taking advantage of westbrooks offensive rebounding fetish by playing the blazers’ new running and gunning/halfcourt fusion style ESoH (eight seconds or hold… … for a better shot that is). I guess it could also mean, 8 seconds or Halfcourt Offense, ESoHO? ESHO? essho sounds pretty funny.

by appel82 on Apr 4, 2009 11:32 AM PDT up reply actions

My wife was pretty hard on Westbrook

She was calling him BPW by the end of the game. The W being for Westbrook. The BP being short for the nickname of a character from the Sopranos.

Honestly, he was actually somewhat effective. He didn’t turn the ball over much, pulled down 8 rebounds etc. and I know he is better than he played on offense but it was fun in light of the article and all…

I'm pro Mike/Mike

I’ve got the league pass which broadcasts games on the home team’s local feed. I’ve heard most of the nba announcing teams, and I’d say Mike/Mike are in the upper third.

by jstamp26 on Apr 4, 2009 12:14 PM PDT reply actions

the celtics announcers are close

they have regional accents (not as flat and robot like as most) and are obvious homers yet also give the other team credit where due and the refs. the benefit of the doubt as well. Celtics announcers = Mike and Mike of the east, maybe a little better, but similar.

He despises perimeter jumpers and wants full contact karate in the paint, I think that’s probably it.

I know a lot of people complain that Mike and Mike are homers, but

in reality they are some of the most unbiased announcers on the scene. Yes, they almost always disagree right away on a call against the team that’s questionable, but if it ends up being the correct call they fess up.

I’ve heard some of the league-issued announcers (Mike and Mike are Blazers employees) be a lot more biased towards their assigned team, and no one makes a stink about that!

referenced the article too. Here’s Blake’s response.

About me not being the answer?" Blake said. “It’s the story of my life. Not going to be a good college player. Not going to start in college. Can’t win a championship. Can’t play in the NBA. Can’t start in the NBA. So, what’s new?”

'I enjoy this torture... I enjoy this a lot... I could watch this ... for hours and hours ... if not days... and never, ever get sick of it.' - Ben, 04-01-09

Blake has the wonderful quality

of being as good as his teammates allow him to be. You put him out there, give him the ball, and tell him to go win the game on his own…there’s no way. However just about anything his teammates need—any spaces they leave to fill—he fits right there. He’s not the star (or even a star) but all of his teammates who are stars or burgeoning stars are having a devil of a time outgrowning him.

Blake is a winner...

That is no small thing, and there will be some critical moments in our ascent when he really makes the difference.

by Blazin' on Apr 4, 2009 11:29 PM PDT up reply actions

Quiet as it's kept, championship teams don't resemble all-star teams; they include a few "role players"

And if a team has stars at the two, four, and five positions (as the Blazers do), the best fit at the point can very well be a role player. The reason is another little-known basketball fact: there’s only one ball!!

The only way Blake could be a BETTER fit for this Blazers squad, in my opinion, is if he were a lock-down defender. But he’s not terrible on defense, and he seems to be getting a little better.

Besides this artitcle, doesn't it seem like Portland is flying under the radar?

When the season started there were all those articles about how fun this team was going to be to watch, and now that they have exceeded expectations, no one seems to notice. It is probably a good thing.

How about SCENARIO, Bill?

If Portland finishes in the top 4 in the West, I suspect they'll get some dark-horse predictions

Since let’s face it, everyone’s going to pick one team to come out of the West.

by Timmay! on Apr 4, 2009 1:12 PM PDT up reply actions

Bahahaha you would notice that. :)

Ok I’ll rephrase. They’ll all pick the SAME team to come out of the West, but may list Portland as a dark horse. :)

Better?

by Timmay! on Apr 4, 2009 1:23 PM PDT up reply actions

End of the Article

Bucher even says maybe he feels the way he does about the Thunder because everyone has caught onto the Blazers. People are moving on to the next big thing. Last year it was Atlanta, beginning of this year Portland, now the Thunder, Maybe next year it will be Memphis or Minnesota.

I would agree with whoever said that maybe the media has moved on but the coaches and players won’t overlook the Blazers at this point. Houston won’t take Sunday’s game lightly.

Yup

Which is unfortunately not a creative but obvious choice if the hypothesis is “Did Portland pick the wrong guy – yet again?”. With that setup to begin with, Greg did a good job in the interview. It won’t convince anybody who thought Durant will be the better player anyway.

I think I make a post comparing Martell and Danny Granger next since we could have had him too. Especially focusing on this season. “Portland could have had an All-Star. Instead, they took another injury-prone player. Will he ever be that good?”. Comparing him to CP3 and D-Will would be stupid, but I think that is fair especially if I neglect that Granger also had some ankle/foot problems.
