Who is your least favorite sports announcer?

I was thinking of posting a "rah-rah," "go Blazers" type post and in the mean time was reading others' fan posts. I was going along happy as a lark when i read someone's comment about Charles Barkley and instantly got mad thinking about all the stupid @ss things he has said not only about our team but just about any time he opens his mouth. I personally dislike Stephen A. Smith also just because he is anoying with all the yelling, its like he is trying to be the African American N.B.A. version of Dickie V. Not gonna happen Stephen and by the way, WE CAN ALL HEAR YOU JUST FINE!!! No need to yell buddy. :)

Back to Chuck, ugh...I loved him as a player allthough he was extremely cocky then also, i still liked his play style and allways respected his play everytime he torched us as a phoenix sun. I know this post is quite a bit on the angry/diragatory(sp?) side and i dont mean to offend anyone by what i have said i just honestly think Chuck is unprofessional with his bias and needs to learn to try and atleast hide that bias. Wasnt he wanting to run for alabama governor? Hahahaha, if he cant hide his bias about other basketball teams how does he expect to hide his bias to voters about what ever it is that he hates. Well thats my Charles Barkley rant, thanks for reading and giving feedback. I know there should be some kind of poll but there are just to many sports casters out there to list that people hate so just write in your own guy.

I'm trying to track down the "Joe Buck calls classic sporting events" sound clip

If anyone knows it, link it up here. His “call” of the 1980 US Hockey Team is great.

Joe Buck doesn’t do basketball… but he’s still the worst announcer out there.

is an idiot. Everything he talks about some how comes back around to what he did in the NBA. And those aren’t even his real ears! He had bionic ones put on just to hear his own voice better.

Reggie Miller

He’s wrong about everything, which is really crazy considering how much basketball he’s played.

He said he thinks Tyrus Thomas could literally average ten blocks a game. When the other announcers questioned if that was even humanly possible Miller was unrelenting, insisting it was indeed possible.

That would equal about 820 blocks a season. Right now the record for most blocks in a single season is held by Mark Eaton at 456. Tyrus just needs to double that and he’ll be gold.

Barkley is washed up but at least they don’t let him call games most of the time.

Tony Luftman

I’m not sure he qualifies as a sports announcer, but every time this clown graces my halftime show, I want to stab him with a fork over and over. “Tell me what I won, Michael…”

An idiot award.

Seriously, I don’t know where he came from, but I wish he’d go back to doing his over-expressed kindergarten teacher routine somewhere else. Ricey/Wheeler/Harvey are all irritating in their own right, but Luftman and Holton are as bad as it gets.

I am embarrassed for these guys. If people from the rest of the country were to see these two corkscrews, they wouldn’t be as nice as I am.

The Blazers are doing so many things with excellence right now. The team, the coach, the community involvement, the GM, the list goes on. But…why, when the broadcast crew is what people see, are they letting these two chuckleheads represent the franchise to the public. It’s so annoying.

More Mike Rice. More Rebecca Harlow. More good decision making from Blazers brass.

Heribert Fassbender

You don’t know him, but I had to bear him when I lived in Germany in about his final two years before retirement. Despite massive experience reporting from multiple Olympic games and world championships (soccer, track and field, others), he had acquired no competency in the covered sports whatsoever. But was known to happily summarize what had happened (or not) way too early. His voice was pretty weird. And his comments were often bland, repetitive, chauvinistic and whiny. I remember an Olympics cycling race in Sidney where he kept complaining endlessly that it was too warm and his monitor was facing the sun and thus he couldn’t distinguish the riders. I don’t care, do something about it and don’t mention it. He also came up with quotes like:

  • “Well, he was scheduled for substitution anyway” when a player got severely injured
  • “That was a pretty weak turnover” and “good pass, unfortunately much too long”
  • “Don’t turn off the game yet. It can come worse”
  • “The score is 1 – 1, but it could have been the other way around”
  • Going Shakespeare: “Toulouse or not to lose, this is the question”
  • “Germany wins through a goal by…uhm…well…” and couldn’t come up with the name
  • “Rivaldo is awesome. Rivaldo has such great technique. Oh, that’s not Rivaldo”

During the world championships 2002 I (and apparently many others) complained about him to the broadcasting TV station, and got an e-mail back that included statements like “We can’t replace him since he is [management position] and thus has a right to choose his own broadcasts that he extensively uses. Your critique is surely justified, but we see little chances to make an exchange during this tournament. We are sorry that we can’t give you better news.” So they knew very well internally how horrible he was.

But in the US, Jon Barry and Kenny Smith (Rudy’s dunk contest anyone) and Timbo’s friend Dickie V who can’t stop raving about Duke are starting to come close for basketball. Sam Rosen and Joe Buck and the rest of Fox for NFL.

Emmitt Smith

Has anyone ever heard him analyze the NFL? This is a real quote he said when talking about a running back: “He’s the kind of back that makes plays with his legs…” Oh wow that is some in-depth observation there.

by dblieberman on Apr 4, 2009 10:12 AM PDT reply actions

wow I'm sorry I don't mean to be antagonisic but...

have watched Football for years and when I hear that quote I interpret it thusly.
He means that this particular back can extend a play by using his legs to evade the defense and find seams, or run faster. This in contrast to RB/HBs like Bettis who used his body. So that is actually in my mind useful. The basketball comparison would be an announcer saying that a player makes plays with his dribbling/ballhandlein/passing… like isiah thomas, and more recently Nash

by SamGoody on Apr 4, 2009 11:03 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah I kinda assumed that too

but his choice of words was still a little hilarious. A better announcer could have elaborated, where as he let his statement end there.

by dblieberman on Apr 4, 2009 5:25 PM PDT up reply actions

Does anyone take Charles Barkley seriously?

I find it hard to believe that anyone watches him to hear anything insightful about a game. He is there for comic relief, which has gone downhill in my opinion, and nothing else.

the fact that utah dosen't have a solid leader

perhaps is why they are so bad on the road? paraphrasing what he said about utah.

i’d say that’s a pretty good assumption, seeing as jerry sloan teams are historically a bunch of robots passing and cutting to basket, commies of basketball? No, but close. Deron Williams could be that guy, in a different system perhaps?

In that kind of system injuries don’t hurt you as much as your coach always yelling at you. Because you are just a soldier in a faceless army, you’re always replaceable. I seriously think sloan is an amazing coach, but he never seems to fully trust his players, all of his guys seem to play tight, on a short leash. Someone correct me if i’m way off the mark, but barkely’s comment unwrapped an even larger metaphysical, philosophical, maybe even psychological question one should ask about sloan’s style of coaching, which is? Maybe Charles was just buzzed.

by appel82 on Apr 4, 2009 12:34 PM PDT up reply actions

That seems like a bit

of a canned answer. It is a fairly typical and ambiguous thing to say about teams that are struggling but talented. Your taking it from the starting point and thinking about it is probably worlds farther than most sports announcers take things after they say “the lack leadership”. So to me that is not a great example of a nugget of wisdom.

Life is exhausting when you are this stupid.

I’m riled up enough when watching or listening to the Blazers that I don’t need a crazy bipolar play by play guy alternately freaking out or moaning and groaning for 3 hours. Calm down and call the game already!

I completely stopped listening to the Blazers on the radio a couple years ago. With the advent of DVR’s I no longer need to listen to him when I’m on the road; just pop in a CD and catch the game at home later.

I can’t even listen to the games on the radio anymore, as he’s just so far over the top. It’s not enjoyable at all. If he was an announcer for any other team, we’d all be calling him the ultimate homer. I don’t think anybody can argue that he’s just that… it’s just easier to swallow because he’s on our side.

I enjoy Mike Barrett much more, just because he seems to have a modicum of balance. Not that you can’t tell who he wants to win, but he just keeps it under wraps a little better.

it just depends on my mood, maybe a nice blend for color commentators would be ideal. All commentators are guilty of this which really irks me:
Telling a lame-ass story or going on a stupid tangent while an exciting steal/fastbreak is going on.

You can come back to your story during a break in the game, just do your damn job. I think more stand up comics/actors that know sports should broadcast if they want broadcasters to riff instead of just calling the damn game, sans dennis miller.

Jeff Van Gundy when he does Rockets games

He’s either praising their new coach and trying not to act bitter about being fired and defending even legit criticisms of Yao (like him being injury prone) and before T Mac got hurt he’d spend half the time praising him and putting him on any top player list. When I’m watching a game I like to know about what’s going on and about the teams, but when he does Rockets games it’s like listening to someone talk about their ex. They’re either awkwardly nostalgic or passive aggressively talking about how great their new guy is and you’re happy their doing better. When he does other games he can be funny and is one of the few national announcers who points out ref mistakes. I just wish they’d make a rule he can’t do Rocket’s go far in the playoffs and it’s the only game espn has.
